Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Picked up the New Vegas DLC i was missing. I'm really tempted by the LA Noire but I told my brother, a newbie to the sales, to not buy anything including daily deals unless it was either 75% off or under $5. I really want to play LA Noire though and $25 doesn't seem too bad.
Hate to quote myself, but I'm still looking for some opinions.
LA Noire is a slower game. Think of it as GTA meets Adventure Title meets 50s crime drama. If you are interested in those things you can't go wrong.
It wasn't. Only $10 back during the Quakecon sale.
Hmm, just dug through my purchases and it looks like I got it as part of the "Quakecon 2011 Elder Scrolls pack". So you're right, it wasn't $5 on its own, only if you got it combined with Oblivion.
Fallout: New Vegas isn't a Games for Windows Live title, is it?
No it is steamworks. After all the complaints with fo3 Bethesda changed it and all future games I believe as well.

How many hours can I expect out of it, and how much extra content is there in the complete version?
There's going to be an Ultimate Edition for FONV supposedly Feb time. I'm willing to wait for that as well and a sale.
Same here, and NV is the only thing of interest for me today (for better or worse).

Also grabbed L.A. Noire. As long as it doesn't go 66% or 75% off next month for the winter sale I'm happy. I can't imagine they will go lower than 50% this soon.
As long as you plan to and actually get to play it now or very soon, you really shouldn't feel bad that you pay a bit more to be able to play it earlier. If you leave it in your backlog, then you might have a case to be a little peeved.

I mentioned this on GAF, if you get the three Total War complete packs separately, you actually save two cents.

Total War Mega Pack: $12.49

vs.

Empire & Napoleon Total War™ - Game of the Year Edition (Empire, Napoleon, all DLC)
$7.49
Medieval II Gold (Medieval II + Kingdoms)
$2.49
Rome: Total War™ - Complete (Rome Gold + Alexander)
$2.49
= $12.47

I don't really rate games by length so I could be off. I would guess at least 20-25. The Dlc adds 5 bonus cases (not sure if it adds the ps3 exclusive extra case and outfits) to the 20 or so in the main game. I never got around to playing them, so I can't comment on quality. I believe they are all longer in length.

Yeah my backlog on Steam is pretty massive. My goal originally was to replay every game that I've already beaten but bought on Steam anyway. That's too many. Taking that out though, that still leaves me with a PC backlog of 30+ as of right now. Decisions decisions.

It is really irritating that they never discount the dlc separately. I have napoleon and empire and the dlc even with it's 50% off is more than the pack.

So, I did a little reading on the L.A. Noire port, and I've decided not to buy it.

Apparently the tech they use for the crazy-awesome faces in the game only works up to 30 fps, so the whole game is hardcapped at 30 fps, otherwise the audio would desynch.

This isn't a complete PC version deal breaker for me, but I can definitely wait for this one to go lower.

Keep in mind this is a very cinematic game and that framerate being increased may kill some of the experience.
Keep in mind this is a very cinematic game and that framerate being increased may kill some of the experience.
I thought about that, but part of the cinematic feeling movies have is because it's a low framerate with a lot of post-process frame blending. You can't do that in real time with a game.

FYI, I have six hours logged into VVVVVV's main plot. You can certainly clear the game faster, especially if you decide to skip the optional sidequests, but I found the bonuses to be quite worth the extra time.

More to the point, the game's 2.;0 release comes with an excellent level editor, and a number of very worthwhile mods/level packs have come out in the interim. If you enjoy explorational platformers, I truly cannot recommend this game highly enough.

same situation i have, i have 200+ ps3 disc titles about 100+ unfinished. i always end up playing pc most of the time. i've been thinking to sell them and just get the steam version later on. then console exclusives only for consoles + fighting games.

with the recent skyrim problem with ps3 and better looking batman arkham city on pc, i been thinking to completely switch to steam for multiplatform games.

I'll recommend Audi Surf again. It got bumped out pretty quickly last time.

I also picked up NV DLC I had missed. Really wanting Assassins Creed 1-Brotherhood to go on sale... Witcher 2 down to $16 would be good... that's the price on Amazon right now.
Old World Blues definitely, and if you're looking for...uhh...closure to your role as the Courier, I'd get Lonesome Road as well (although its entirely linear, with the only exploring coming from finding a few scattered items). Honest Hearts opens up a large area for exploration but didn't really hook me. Dead Money was pretty annoying in my opinion, but does offer a lot in the way of stealth and environmental based puzzles.
Thanks for the reply. Ended up buying Old World Blues and Lonesome Road. I'll probably pick up the rest later.
That's strange. My husband logged onto my Steam account last night from his computer, and it seems all of my categories are gone and all games are unsorted. Major bummer. :(
This happened to me recently when I reinstalled Steam. I reorganized over a week or so. Pain in the butt. Not sure if I would do it again if it happens again.

I wholeheartedly agree. Battlefield 3 is reason enough to switch. Once you factor in the policies and "gotcha' by the balls" ways of consoles (Sony and Microsoft), PC is the way to go.

I'm ditching all my console games on this site as we speak, won't sell the consoles because of games like Gears of War, Halo, Heavy Rain and God of War Etc Etc... don't want to miss them.

Oh... and KRATOS in Mortal Kombat! :0)
Must resist....... until complete edition....... comes on Steam.....
Civ 5 complete edition (the "GOTY") is on Steam. It's $33 during the sale, and I've seen it for $29.99 at other DD sites (Amazon, I think?)

Please note that every version of Civ 5 is "on steam" - it's a Steamworks game, so Steam is required to play.:bouncy:

Also, this is not a game where I recommend waiting for a complete edition. the DLC offers very little more than what is in the base game. There's a few map packs, a few new civilizations/leaders (as if 18 isn't enough!), and a couple of gameplay modes that are intriguing. Similar stuff is available as free mods from the excellent mod community that is baked into the game.

I anticipate 75% off the DLC at some point during this sale or the Christmas sale. If you bought the base game for $7.50, and got all the DLC for 75% off during a sale, your total price would be less than $16. Hard to beat that.

Naah. We all saw it. It's just that $5 isn't a very good price for this game; it's been bundled and put on sale so many times, most people already have it. I got it for $2 several years ago.

But I'm glad you enjoy it.

Since I been a PC gamer (and had a machine to do it), I only do console games if the game is exclusive or runs better on the console. Some PC ports are shitty and I would rather a better experience on a console. I do PC for everything else because in the end, it's a better overall experience plus better sales on games.

Oh and Skyrim should be illegal to play on consoles, lol.

I'm playing Skyrim right now on the 360 for the achievement points. But games like those I always resell and buy on Steam later for the PC mods once I've gotten enough achievement points to satisfy me. I wish I could make the total jump to PC gaming, but I find it difficult to resist those stupid achievement points on games I enjoy.

Are the Skyrim achievements the same on Steam? Or is it a different set? I understand that 360 achievements and Steam achievements are tracked separately; I just wonder if they are the same across platforms.

Here is the list of cheevs on Steam.

On a glance they look the same, which I wondered about myself. So I'm assuming they are. Afraid to examine the list too closely for spoiler potential.
The upside with console games is that you can trade them for other games.
Perhaps, but a smart pc gamer will buy almost of his games for less than the cost of a rental, thus allowing him to have a permanent collection larger than if he'd had paid more and traded for console games.

Often times you can buy a console game at launch for enough of a discount that you can break even on a re-sell a couple of months later, or close to it. I've done it a few times and its usually a virtual wash.

I should probably point out that the GOTY edition is technically not the "complete" pack, as it is missing the Korea and Wonders of the Ancient World DLC packs. So if you want a truly complete Civ V package, you'll need to get the GOTY and those DLC packs. Of course, I recommend waiting for it to be a daily deal, since it hits that sweet spot of product age and current discount that makes it a very likely candidate for a 50-75% daily deal during this sale.

I asked this in a different thread, but this one seems to have a lot more activity so I'm going to repost it here.

So I purchased Civilization V from Impulse this morning (it was the first thing I've bought from them) and got the confirmation screen that said the order was processing after I completed the checkout. I still haven't gotten a confirmation email or anything with a link or key on it since then and it's been 4 or 5 hours. Is this normal with Impulse? When I log into their website they show no record of the purchase but I don't want to reorder it and wind up paying $15 for two copies. I sent an email to their customer service, but with it being Thanksgiving I'm not sure if I'll hear back in time. Also does anyone have any clue how long this deal lasts?

There seem to be some other folks having similar issues with orders in their forums: http://forums.impulsedriven.com/forum/1006

Does the game show up in your "My Games" tab in the Impulse client? (or GameStop PC Downloads App as they call it now.)

I just got the email so everything is ok. Prior to that, about half an hour ago, there was still nothing in the "My Games" tab. Kind of unnerving, especially with a deal that you don't know how long it lasts. Thanks for the help!

Glad it worked out for you. :)

They are probably just getting swamped with orders.

Some good deals today, but nothing for me. I'd complete my New Vegas DLC, but I won't be playing it for quite a while. The price on the Total War pack is super tempting, but I wouldn't play it for a long time, if ever. I want Zeno Clash, but I can wait on it.

Basically, unless the deal is under $2 per game, my backlog of unplayed games is proving to be an effective restraint. Dammit.

I'd also like to recommend VVVVVV. Picked it up last summer during the sale and it was definitely the best game I grabbed during the sale.

Got the last New Vegas DLCs. Figured they wouldn't be much cheaper than that for a long time. Thought about getting the Gun Runner's/Courier's Stash, but decided it's probably not worth it (even if it would only be an extra $1.50).

I'll throw in my recommendations for VVVVVV and Zeno Clash. Quality gaming to be had for $5ish.
If I were to get only one FO:NV DLC, what should it be?

General consensus on the internet seems to be Old World Blues.

Accurate?
Old world blues is easily the best one.

Yeah I agree. I heard some good things about this DLC. I also bought the DLC continuing the courier's story. It was $5 dollars total. It is cheap and unless you are looking for completeness, get Old World Blues. Definitely good DLC.

Count me as one of the people who sees a great deal on F:NV complete, but has got so much to do in FO3, not to mention just getting into Oblivion and having DA:O UE to get through (and you know, 200 other Steam games), that I just can't buy it yet. If it hits 75% off now, it will hit it later.

Nothing else from today really jumped out at me that I don't already have, unfortunately. That' s OK, because I haven't even gotten the chance to play the stuff I bought yesterday.
Don't blame ya. I originally had a free rental thing so I picked up Skyrim on xbox, got two cheevos after a couple hours of play but I have a gaming rig and said screw it, got it on PC and no regrets. It plays really well on PC, looks GREAT at FULL HD not upscaled. The graphics are just so much better and it's a lot easier with kb/m to do everything you need super fast. Quick saving is one of my favorites, not to mention I have it on my SSD so fast travel and going in/out of houses is a snap. The high texture mods too I can never resist.

Damn, still no multi-game packs or bundles. Getting a group of people to buy large packs of games was the only way to get them for cheaper than what they were at Christmas. =\ My money is safe so far.

You'd think they'd offer more packs to promote their new game trading system.
