Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I'm hearing that Homefront is today's deal at 75%. No listing on Steam yet and I can't access the game's page, so maybe?
I can't load any game pages right now. Might be something bigger...

Homefront is 75% off according to the news but you can't get to the page yet and it doesn't show the new price ($7.50) when doing a search for it yet.

Killing Floor says free weekend on it but not weekend deal, maybe we will get something else for the weekend deal, at least i hope so. Because if theres one game that goes on sale as much as borderlands its killing floor. Then on another note I have to say all the DD we been getting is how i dreamed they would be when they started the whole DD thing this last year

FWIW - I paid full price for Homefront, and honestly, had a blast with it. It got bad reviews for being short - but it was fun while it lasted, and I had some good times with the multiplayer as well. Definitely worth $7.50.

Is the steam store working for anyone? I'm trying to get to the Everquest 2 and APB page but its down...
Is the steam store working for anyone? I'm trying to get to the Everquest 2 and APB page but its down...
It is down, read like 5 posts up.

Edit: Back up for me.

Homefront just isn't quite low enough yet, I have a feeling it will be 4.99 or less during the summer sale 2012 so I think I will hold off while hoping for deals on stuff I want more later on in the month.

My friend played homefront on 360 and told me it was the first time he had the urge to take out the disc from the console and smash it into pieces. Wow.
Pirates of the Black Cove is $4.99 (75% off) on D2D - it can be activated on Steam. Any thoughts?
Don't listen to reviews, it's been patched a ton
XNA is native on PC, what do you mean?
I just mean the general lack of options and customization present in many of the XNA/XBLA titles. (both Bastion and Orcs Must Die are very thin on what's tweakable on PC from a rendering standpoint)

You can basically boil it down to: "Oh hey look. It says 'Help & Options' on the main menu." It's not so much a negative as it is a tell that you are playing an XBLA-targeted game on some other platform.

Also many of them don't even have settings/config files which you can drill-down into should you want to tweak things beyond the very basic stuff which they give you access to in-game.

Many use the approach of it just works as they would with a console game but on PC that should never be the assumption due to the sheer number of possible hardware configurations.

I find it odd to have a Mature game be featured as part of the contest. To enter today's drawing, you must visit the store page for the game. However, you're honor-bound (and due to the TOS, legally bound) NOT to visit the page if you happen to be a minor. This is probably a legal conflict unless the contest details state that it isn't officially available to minors, even if only for this day.

Not that it matters to me, or even bothers me at all. Just find it interesting.
I rented the 360 version and I don't remember anything about it except that it was completely unremarkable in every way.
This was my experience. I was actually surprised at how bad the game looked (360 version, can't comment on PC). I'm not someone who plays games for graphics, and it didn't bother me, but I was expecting more because of the way THQ marketed it as a major contender. I got pretty bored with the campaign after about an hour and only finished it because I'd heard that it was short.

I haven't played MW3 yet, but from what I heard the game is always "on" and doesn't let up with thrills. This is the opposite. It's a lot of walking around and waiting for the guy in front of you to end his exposition and open the door to a new area where he'll do the same. You'll then shoot a few guys and repeat. The only part where I felt that it really picked up was the bridge at the end and even that became tiresome after about 10 minutes.

Some of the vehicles in multiplayer were fun and I don't think there were any major problems with it, but I never bothered to redeem my online pass because level 7 was high enough for me. If you already have a few CoD games since MW, Bad Company, BF3, etc. just go play those again. I don't think there's much to get out of Homefront at any price if you already have them.

Picked up Homefront on Amazon for $6.97 since I had some credit to use. Finished the game this past weekend. Except for a few frustrating parts, the campaign held my interest long enough and entertained for the asking price.

So I see Everquest II has made its way to Steam. I've never played an MMO, but this one seems interesting. But these Free-to-Play things...I'm thinking I shouldn't waste my time and just play a proper video game instead. Also, I would want to play solo, which this game does seem to support...

You can play solo

If you're looking for a good ones Runes of Magic is fun, I played it at PAX and then played it once I got home.

Like all other games they're fun to do some things in and then go onto another game.

Also Rusty Hearts and Spiral Knights are fantastic controller supported games that feature hack and slash gameplay

WoW is F2P levels 1-20, worth a shot to see if you like the MMO concept, though the game isn't exactly what it used to be.

I have enjoyed it for the most part. It reminds me of the updated version of Pirates! There is quite a bit to do and the map is fairly large. My only complaint is how childish the humor is. If they tried to make the game straight and included some humor here and there, it would be a lot more enjoyable to deal with the story. All the characters have moronic names and everything is supposed to be ha-ha funny. There are even messages in a bottle to collect, which are horribly bad pirate jokes. Every time I picked one up, the screen froze and the message popped up. I ended up turning that option off because of how bad they were. You have the ability to upgrade your ship and decide what kind of crew sails and makes land with you. Have the crew follow you can get a little tedious and in battle, trying to manage them can be a little frustrating. For the most part though, when fighting, they handle themselves pretty well. The sailing part is really pretty and on land is nice. At least until you zoom in and then you see how bad the graphics are. To be fair though, it's not a major company with unlimited resources, so they did a good job with what they had. They just released an add-on, but it's currently only available on three sites and to my knowledge, Steam is not one of them.

I Liked them on Facebook and they seem to be an active crew that talks to their customers when they need help, as well as keeping the community up-to-date on what is going on with the game.

For 5 bucks, I would recommend it if you liked Pirates!, but if you have never played Pirates!, I would seriously recommend you pick it up first. You should be able to get it really cheap during a Steam sale. I paid $1.25 last winter.

If anyone has any other questions, let me know.

huh? the D2d code is 24 chars in 4 char blocks

I doubt the game will register on steam. The steam page with compatible keys refers to retail CD keys and like stoned said, D2d code is a different format than what is specified on the steam page.

I guess it doesn't register then. It's confusing with digital retailers - some register, some don't. I purchased Homefront from D2D and it registered, but, I guess, PBC does not.

I played MW3 and that is an apt description of it.

To be honest, your description of the tedious dialogue and NPC door fetish sounds a lot like HL2:Ep2, which I just played.

Grabbed Bastion because it won't be in an indie bundle and I'm putting it at the top of my backlog queue.

Skipping Homefront because it'll be cheaper by the time I want to play it.

Tried APB on Steam Day 1 for a coupla hours and had a bit of fun, but was put off by the food pellet elements and upgrade nags. S'why I generally avoid MMOs and F2Ps.

Killing Floor is fun in a very mindless way, but I can't take it in prolonged doses. Also, best played with a group of friends.

I am so very anxious for the Winter Sale/Event. :bouncy:

Homefront is a Steamworks game, all PC copies regardless of where you get them have to register on Steam, same with all Steamworks games. A lot of other games can register on Steam as that link to the list shows. Now some of those games on the list that aren't "true" Steamworks games will use Steamworks features for the Steam version only (anything from steam cloud, leaderboards, achievements, etc)

It is an iffy situation overall I agree though. But as long as it is a true Steamworks title regardless of where you buy from it activates on Steam. Usually to find out if a game is a "true" Steamworks title you can google to find out plus many places will say it requires a third party program most the time.

There are sometimes exceptions from digital retailers. Fear 2 was a steam works game and all retail copies register on steam but later copies from other dgital retailers did not. Torchlight, trine, a few others were like this as well.

That is true, but neither of those I believe launched as Steamworks titles, I remember Torchlight adding Steamworks features in later.

The whole thing is a big ol mess in the end. Safest bet is checking with the retailer if there isn't a warning saying you need a 3rd party program.

Yeah I am not big on F2P games either. The only real F2P game I enjoy is League of Legends, simply because you don't need to spend a dime in that game to unlock anything. You can just spend money to unlock characters faster.

I can't wait for the winter sale. It's like Gabe gave us a Christmas present with the holiday sale so we can give him money for it by buying cheap games,

Hm, oblivion worth it at that price? I had it on xbox way back but never really played it as much as I should, but Skyrim has got me interested in what I may have missed lol

There's a lot of jank to it that Skyrim removed/streamlined, but there's a ton of content there. If you like Skyrim, chances are you'll like Oblivion.

Main quest is terrible though.
Hm, oblivion worth it at that price? I had it on xbox way back but never really played it as much as I should, but Skyrim has got me interested in what I may have missed lol
Playing Oblivion after Skyrim is kind of tough. The leveling with choosing a class, birthsign, major/minor skills makes it tedious. Going through Oblivion Gates becomes a huge pain in the ass.

The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood have much better main quests than Skyrim (longer, too). It's worth it just for those, IMO. The Mage's Guild is also better.

As for the DLC, the main ones are Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. I hated the former (though many liked it), enjoyed the latter. Of the other DLC, the Wizard's Tower is useful since it contains warp points to the towns (take you there instantly as opposed to fast traveling). The rest is minor, alright to have but nothing huge if you miss it.

I'll agree that the main quest in Oblivion was not great, but the side quests and the Shivering Isles expansion are great, definitely worth the price.

Not only is Oblivion an amazing experience, but you can make it so so so much more with a little (actually a lot) of modding. I had never done any PC modding before, but I picked up Oblivion GOTY deluxe last time it was on sale and then I followed everything in this guide:

http://www.somethingfornobody.com/2011/oblivion-modding-guide/

You would not believe the difference it makes. It changes probably about 10,000 things in the game for the better, including removing most or all of the crashing and bugs, making everything look better (much much much better), improving the gameplay in just about every way, and introducing so much variety and other things to make the game more interesting and believable that IMO it is a better buy than Skyrim, even if they were the same price. Of course it doesn't help that they seem to want to destroy Skyrim with each new patch.
It's a good time to own Bastion on Steam.

Stranger's Dream is coming to Bastion next week. Steam users get it free while 360 owners have to pay $1.
Ehhh, it's only a buck

Plus the narrator came back? It's like they're making sure I never get it lol

Is there a patch to take him out? I would probably be in on the next sale if that was there (or not there, depending)

One of these days I'll get around to Oblivion, which I bought last year.

As for Skyrim, I wouldn't be surprised if I get it from my friend at some point, since he works for Zenimax. Actually, I could have had it already if I owned an XBox 360, since they had an extra copy to give out.

Tempted to pick up Oblivion since I played it on the 360, but sold the 360 before the expansions came out. Although I found myself not wandering around as much as I did in Morrowind and Skyrim. Would always get over encumbered going through Oblivion Gates (levitate would have been useful in the Oblivion Gates since they got repetitive after a while).
