Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I think Crash Course arrived at the beginning of last month. The porting of the old maps trickled in throughout the year, starting with The Sacrifice DLC including the No Mercy campaign.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if all the maps were in fact brighter, as a result of whatever tweaks they made to the game engine. Initially I was put off by the cosmetic, atmospheric changes, but the game is so well crafted it ends up not mattering much.
I think the problem is that many of the most hyped WRPGs are ranted and ranted about and no one really sees their flaws because they are so excited about the big immersive world. A few years later when the next biggest open world experience comes out suddenly everyone can see all the last games flaws that a year or two before they ignored or down played.
Yes, this was exactly my original point about looking back at these three games. Thanks for saying it better.

BTW if you own Oblivion and like a tighter RPG (less sandboxy), check out Nehrim, which is a total conversion mod for Oblivion. It's a complete game, and a completely different game, but it requires a copy of Oblivion to run. It's a free mod. The voice-acting is German, but English subtitles are available.

For people that own Morrowind +both expansions and own Oblivion and Shivering Isles you will probably like this if you like Morrowind better but you wish it was updated to a newer engine.

http://morroblivion.com/

Morrowind ported over into the Oblivion engine.
Er, no it's not because in single-player you don't play as the special infected. You can through some console commands/cheats, but it's not the same thing as playing against human survivors.

As someone who's logged over 1000 hours in each game, my advice is that if you're going to play mainly single-player, skip L4D1. All the maps (save one survival map) have been ported over to 2. The only real reason to play the first game in multiplayer is to experience the joy of the 4-cap, which means having a team of 4 special infected that can incapacitate at the same time (i.e. hunter and smoker combinations), which doesn't happen in L4D2.
I don't think the question was in regards to the mode where you play versus human-controlled infected.

L4D is much better as a co-op game than SP. There's little to no story to speak of. Just co-op action. There's also a versus minigame sorta thing but it isn't nearly as good as just playing co-op.

Damn, great price for Dungeon Siege 3.

I highly doubt we'll see it go this low during the Winter Sale, as it would have to drop from $50 to $5, and the discounts never get that deep on retail releases.

Glad people mentioned here.

L4D2 is good game whether single player or co-op or vs. If you prefer single player go for it, there are tons of custom maps and mods you can use to make the game more enjoyable. Though the AI makes dumb decisions all the time. If you have someone at home that wants to play also you could do split screen.

Another bonus on getting Dungeon Siege 3 -- Amazon gave me a $5 credit after buying that I can use on any "Top Game of 2011," which includes a good number of other Steamworks games on sale.

You get the same bonus on Dungeon Defenders too but they don't stack.
just to add, ds3 on amazon includes a $9 credit toward kingdom of amalur and is good for a year.
To clarify, it's good until January 11, 2012, which is a month away. Still, if you were planning on buying it's a no-brainer to get DS3 now.

Thats not true, the $5 promo for best-selling 2011 games is only good until then. The $9 credit is good for one year from purchase, mine being good until December 12 2012.

edit - pasted from the confirmation email "you have earned a $9 credit toward the pre-order of "The Kingdom of Amalur" game download good until 12/11/2012"

They've given three different dates then. The page for the game says January 11, and the email says both December and November 11th. Since it says "pre-order" though I'm assuming it's supposed to be the date listed on the product page.

Yeah its a bit screwy. I hadnt noticed the november date in the email. I guess take the credit with a grain of salt. If i ever use it and theres a problem Ill contact customer support and theyll probably take care of it.

Yea. I tried to talk to support and clear it up (I'm interested in KoA but not until a few price drops) and they had no idea, said they would have someone call me "right away" about 30 minutes ago. Not worth wasting any more time on it now.
So much for Valve's hotstreak of daily deals - it's COD:MW2 for $14.99
that's depressing. was hoping for a FO3 GOTY or F:NV sale.
So much for Valve's hotstreak of daily deals - it's COD:MW2 for $14.99
Dammit, why won't this game drop more than 50%??

Bloody Activision...

Wow, what a shitty price for MW2. Then again this is Activision so I wouldn't expect anything less. Still $14.99 for a two year old game, when newer games like Dungeon Siege 3 is being offered at $5 on Amazon.

$14.99 for MW2? What a load of shit. If this makes it to the top seller list, there is something wrong with the world. This should be $4.99, or $7.49 at the very very most. Even then, it's still not a great deal, considering 2 games in the series have been released since this..

Wow, glad someone mentioned DS3! $5 jeez.

Deus Ex is also $20. Was it $25 on Steam before, or was it $20? I wonder if the winter sale will have it lower? If not, I guess I can wait til next year.

Is Kingdoms of Amalur Steamworks? Need to keep my gaming on Steam because... ... ... I don't know, I just do. Confused about their "buy it before" such and such, because I thought it wasn't out til February, but maybe they want people to pre-order.

ALSO Gothic 4 for $4 is a steal if you like RPGs. Divinity II for $12 is also excellent. Not sure if these are Steamworks. Suppose not.

OH and Risen is a great game. $8.

For $5, I would say Dungeon Siege III is worth it. It's not a bad game, just a bit generic with the world and stuff. Then again if you are interested in Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, you might want to hold off for a Steam sale on DS III just so you can purchase Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 (Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 can only be purchased in the Dungeon Siege Complete pack, you can't buy them separate).

Modern warfare 2 sale is a joke to say the least. I did pick up Dungeon Siege 3 from amazon though. At that price from what I remember of the demo, I'll get my $5 back and more.

The pricing for these Call of Duty games always make me rage. I'd like to grab one or two of them just for occasional fun, but $15 for a game that already has two successors, no thanks. Steam /CAG has taught me well.
Dungeon Siege III supports the controller, right? It seems the forums are saying it's better than KBM. 360 port and all that.
Yes, it has native support.

Hey sorry about the confusion here, the promo on Kingdom of Amalur is good until January 11th 2012 (so 1 month). The promotional credit is dropped directly into your account and will be applied at checkout.

That was totally my bad, hit "1" twice instead of once.

Hope this clears everything up.

Cheers,
Tony

Glad you like the deals, we all put quite a bit of effort into the holiday period :). Hopefully you're psyched about future deals too...did you see NBA2k12 for $9.99?

Cheers,

seriously Activision has to be burnt down with fire, they're the most greedily game company I've ever seen and they don't even have the decency to understand they FRAUD kids with these prices and every single COD release since MW2. They don't even care about customer satisfaction, they just want your MONEY. Just looking at the "community managers" they have makes me wonder how are they making so much money.
I despise them, god this is enfuriating.

lol, thats some grammar.

A CoD game, huh? No thanks :) I don't like that they ask full price for "new" games that feel more like just some DLC for MW1 every damn year. That, and they keep the price too high constantly.

You can't blame them though. It's the idiot average consumer that makes it possible. Not me, though.
Yes, it has native support.
Thanks, the game does indeed have native support.

It ran well on my machine, but I just didn't find it very interesting. The voice actors sounded dull, the storyline was dull, and the game is just stupid-dark. Everything seems hidden all over the place.

I think I'll save my $5 and just get something I'd rather have during the winter sale.
I always find the Activision hate hilarious.
Yep. Same here. I think people are spoiled. If the games really are that crappy, rip off, etc. then don't buy them. There's plenty of cheaper indie games with similar styles to support.

Truth is the games really are good, really are popular, and like it or not Activision has no real incentive to sell them cheaper than they are right now. Eventually it will drop in price when demand drops and you can buy it there.

It makes no sense to complain about full price for a game when most people aren't buying them until they hit 75 or 90% off retail. Then when it hits 75% off original retail (59.99) people want it even lower...lol...
I always find the Activision hate hilarious.
I don't know why. They make cookie cutter games that blow and never discount them. However, I don't understand why people care so much they have to go off about it on every public forum. I hate activision but I don't buy their games. A lot more effective than complaining about them because they don't owe anyone a 'good sale price' on their games.

Blizzard never discounts their stuff either but there is a lot less hate for them seeing as they release high quality games. Activision though, they have the 'Madden' of FPS War games. They release it with basic, tiny updates every year and keep the price jacked to the moon. Plus, they were the first to set the new PC game market at 59.99 -- easy to hate them for that, alone!

It's interesting that Blizzard and Valve get compared as the two PC game devs that can do no wrong, but Blizzard rarely drops their prices and Valve can't seem to help themselves from giving games away.

Kind of cool to have such different mentalities out of high quality companies.
