Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Tempted by the force unleashed games, and $5 a piece certainly is my buying point. Anyone have any opinions on them? I know the second one was supposed to be sub par compared to the first.
Managed to pick up the indie royale bundle when it dropped down to $2.99 an hour ago and I'm already starting to regret buying it.

At least I got it for the minimum. I'd regret it even worse if I'd pre-ordered.
I can't imagine preordering these things. What a gamble.
Battle: Los Angeles
Red Bull X-Fighters
Puzzle Chronicles
Yard Sale Hidden Treasures: Sunnyville
SAW
Silent Hill Homecoming
and BioZone
are all 33% off for some reason. They all seem like really random choices for a sale.
They are leaked early X-mas sales. If you visit the pages you'll see holiday sale, and it ends Jan 2.

The first one was fun, especially after getting more powerful later in the game, as a force powers + physics + dynamic animation system toybox. It wasn't great as a game and it satisfied me enough that I had no interest in the sequel, especially with the subpar reviews.

If messing around as a Jedi sounds fun for $5, it's probably worth it. If you want to play a fun game as a Jedi you're better off with the Jedi Knight games. Of course it's been years since I've played those, so they may not hold up.

I usually like things people hated because I don't judge video games when I play them as much as the critics do.
This is why I liked supposedly bad games like Spider-Man Web of Shadows.

I never was a Star Wars fan, but I never hated them. I just didn't find the theme interesting.
However, Star Wars Force Unleashed was a pretty fun game. There were a couple of time where it was frustrating due to bad checkpoints, but others were fine. The game was overall very much enjoyable.

I haven't played the second one so I can't comment on that yet.

Ah, I see that. So are we thinking next week for the sale to start?

I don't think they're leaks necessarily. Perhaps Konami's sale just started earlier.

My understanding was there was a bonus in preordering.
Dungeons of Dredmore has updated for me, and it looks like it's getting DLC.

Good to know, I was wondering when this would drop. Was playing a ton last night. When my character died last night I thought I'd wait to play again until after the update drops, so it's good to know I can go straight at it after my last final this afternoon.
My understanding was there was a bonus in preordering.
Yup. If you pre-order for $4 you get the bonus. If you want the bonus after it launches you need to pay $10.

I was hoping on killing floor for the FPS. I'm embarrassed to even add Dino d-day to my steam game list. I thought the chiptune album was cute, so what the heck.

I really don't see the issue with pre-ordering. It's $1 more than if you get lucky to get it when the bundle starts. Sure it's a bit of a gamble, but we are talking about $1 here. Personally I love this pre-order bonus made it worth the price alone. The only game that remotely interests me is Blackwell Eets may be fun. Overall 4 games for a buck a piece and an awesome xmas cd well worth the pre-order if you ask me but to each his own.

I preordered for the chiptune album. I listened to some of it from it site and determined it was worth to me the $3 it sells for by itself. For a dollar more, I was guaranteed an adventure series and whatever else was included.
I don't think they're leaks necessarily. Perhaps Konami's sale just started earlier.
Would be weird considering Konami is a terrible PC publisher that tends to barely partcipate in sales to be the type of company to do that, especially when the sales appeared in the middle of the night.
Eh, I don't think I'm going to get this Indie Royale bundle. Dino D-Day is garbage, not interested in Eets, and Blackwell just doesn't seem as interesting as alllll the other adventure games I want to play/have.
Same here.

$4 for Blackwell Trilogy alone is worth it. I dug the hell out of Gemini Rue and I love these types of games.

Everything else to me is just a bonus, including the chiptune album. For $1/game well worth the "gamble".
I believe SPAZ got some Winter Achievements; it's a pretty good indicator that it'll be discounted as it has a high chance of being part of whatever scavenger hunt / game Valve has planned.

SPAZ also got a Demo on Steam. It's only a 100 MB d/l to try the demo. Nice. I'm betting we see 75% off for one day on SPAZ this coming sale.
Ah, great to know.

I've seen some $35ish copies on eBay, and a few games have been unloading codes in the low $40's. I may bite closer to Christmas, but I wish my 360 copy from Goozex would come so my husband could see the game and tell if he would like it. 5th in line there...
If you're shopping for Skyrim on ebay, make sure before you buy that the seller isn't selling you a Steam account with the game already activated. Some people call this a "used" copy. There's a lot of this going on for Civilization V, too.

The Steam license does not allow for the transfer of games between accounts (except for the new trading of un-activated games), nor for the sale or lending of an account to another person. Although it's unlikely you'll get banned for this, you may not like the hassle of having to use a different Steam account to play the game. It's won't be a part of your regular library.

If it's a legitimate activation code that hasn't been used before, ask the seller where they obtained it. You should know what you're getting in to. Many people got hosed by the DIRT 3 fiasco of 1.7 million stolen codes. Valve didn't shut down the accounts of anyone who used those keys, but they did remove the game from their Steam accounts. Many people paid 2nd-hand for their codes, thinking they were getting a code legitimately distributed by the AMD promotion. Whoops.

(End of public service announcement. Now back to your regularly scheduled game discussion and sale anticipation!)
Indie Royale Xmas Bundle is up

Steam Games are:

Blackwell Trilogy (not previously available on Steam)
Eets
Dino D-Day
...and that's the last time anyone pre-orders from this bundle. What a load of junk!

If you think this bundle is junk you have awful taste
If you think this bundle is junk you have awful taste
I guess I have bad taste too then, because this bundle is the biggest piece of crap since Origin.

Blackwell games are good. Same company as Gemini Rue. Dino D-day is pretty crap. Though I kind of admire the Dino-D day guys are still updating their awful little game. I'd have paid in the 5 buck range for a single Blackwell game on Steam, so Eets and Oil thingy are just an extra to try out later.

Actually, I really, really liked Eets - I was playing it at work during my lunch break, and it's a very addictive little puzzler, much in the same style as something like "Lemmings", "Humans" or "Fury of the Furries".

In other words, don't write it off as something you'll never play - it's actually a lot of fun once you get into it.

I'm also on the fence about the "Star Wars" title - I think my steam backlog might just be a little too deep to add yet another game I'll probably never even load up.
I guess I have bad taste too then, because this bundle is the biggest piece of crap since Origin.
So don't buy it. I however, am quite pleased with it.
If you think this bundle is junk you have awful taste
Well it seems like many here say junk, I think junk, iv had 2 or 3 people on steam list message me today complaining about it......and meanwhile you dislike the Narrator in Bastion which everyone seems to love....so what were you saying about bad taste?

I'm always baffled by the people who come forth in this thread and can't seem to tell the difference between junk and products that are well made (or at least competent) that just don't suit their tastes. Not every daily deal or indie bundle is tailored to you. When they aren't, it doesn't make them junk.

If a game is broken or offers so little that even the audience its for dislikes it, then it's probably junk. At least 3/4 of these games are not that.

Yeah but Dino D-Day appears to fit that junk mold to a T, at least by what I've seen from the reviews, including that pretty lengthy WTF one.

Still, I'm planning to get this bundle.

I've heard that as well, but there are 3 more games in the bundle that have all been well received by the people who bought and played them before they were bundled up. That's why I said 3/4. I also haven't played Dino D-Day. It would be unfair of me to try and label something that I haven't even tried as junk.

Only game out of the bundle for me that was a dupe was Eets, as I had it on XBLA ages ago.

Dino D Day is quirky. I probably wont play it much at all but it gave me an hours worth of "wtf nazi dinosaurs" laughs earlier today.

Didn't expect so much blowback from my "junk" comment. To clarify:

This is the weakest bundle I've seen yet, of the Humbles and the Royales. I think it takes incredible hubris to encourage people to pre-order, and then deliver this weak of a selection. Talk about a kick in the teeth to people who came through for you.

The games aren't all unplayable. Eets might be fun to me, especially after someone likened it to Lemmings, which I adored back in the day. (Mmmm so much pixel-y goodness!) I simply stated that I don't think people will pre-order in the future, after this weak lineup. If you're a big fan of Dino D-Day, then good for you!:applause:

Indie Royale has ALWAYS been junk (Or, as I like to call it, standard indie fare.) but I had heard good stuff about the Blackwell games. I'm glad to get them for just $3.25. I'll offload the rest of the junk elsewhere.

People who weren't interested in the last bundle's games said no one would pre-order this one after getting burned, but that clearly didn't happen. You seem to be missing the point. These games are valuable to many people, you're just not one of them. This thread is used for buying advice. Calling games that you haven't played junk just because they don't appeal to you isn't helping anyone and does a disservice to well made games.

I also said 3/4 because the Dino D-Day had a poor response. I explained that above. Feel free to read it. Instead, you pulled out the "if you like junk good for you" playground argument and then clapped for yourself. C'mon, you're better than that, right?

What is the point of Dungeon Defenders?

I've played about 10 hours and I don't understand why I'm playing it. Is the whole game about leveling up just for the sake of leveling up?

its about wasting orcs and goblins. beef your dudes up and take on harder challenges at higher difficulties.

if youre playing by yourself its not really the way to have the most fun.

Apparently not.

I didn't mean "you" you, louiedog, I meant "generic" you...

...and I think you're steering this discussion away from my inital point, which was not that the games are junk (more on that in a sec), but that this particular lineup will not have people rushing to pre-order in the future.

As you say, "Not every daily deal or indie bundle is tailored to you. When they aren't, it doesn't make them junk." And with this, I agree. But when they don't deliver games that make the masses go "ooh!" like we all used to do at the Humble bundles, I think people will be less likely to preorder in the future. A handful of CAGers will be stalwart supporters on principle, but I don't think that is indicative of the broader response. They have fewer sales with each bundle.

But I'm glad for you that they appeal to you, and that you have time for them, that you feel you got a deal and supported indie developers, and that you didn't have any overlap with games you already own. (and this time, I mean "you" louiedog, not "you" generic.)

Do you think you'll preorder the next bundle, too, if they allow?

I don't know how much the "burned" by pre-order argument holds up, when their FAQ states that they will give you a refund if you're dissatisfied with your purchase. That's more generous than most digital sale policies.
What is the point of Dungeon Defenders?

I've played about 10 hours and I don't understand why I'm playing it. Is the whole game about leveling up just for the sake of leveling up?
Yes. It's a grind game. I lost interest myself after about 5 hours.

Although I have to admit it was more fun when I teamed up with a friend, but the core game is about loot acquisition.

I've got an extra Eets key for the first one who answers these three questions correctly.

1.Who said this famous quote (famous in my mind anyway)? "Keep your damn filthy bones outta my mouth"

2.Where do they work?

3. In what department?

If you don't have to google the answer we are probably best friends.

Wow, I agree. That is very cool of them. I wish Steam would let me get my money back if I buy a game that doesn't have a demo and I don't like it.

Grabbed both force unleashed games and messed around with them a bit. For $5 a piece I'll get my moneys worth. Though the first game is a beast to download D:
