Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam?
um... do stores not sell the wireless receiver that plugs into your USB so you can use your 360 Wireless controllers?
Lots of places do online do (Microsoft, Amazon, etc). Official name is "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows". If you mean brick & mortar, then no idea. Personally, I use my PS3 controller + Bluetooth and third-party software to emulate a 360 controller when I need it.
it seems like the ones on Amazon are all 3rd party. Are these ok for third party? :whistle2:| I mean.. I have a $20 Amazon GC... the what's "supposed" to be official white one is $21.99, whereas the wired black is $29.99.
The one I got looks official. I think they are just repackaging them. You could always try buying straight from microsoft.

Get the wireless adapter over the wired. It's looking like Steam will have a TV interface in the near future and you may soon find yourself with a Steam computer in the living room if you don't already have one. I imagine the 360 controller will remain the standard for years. The wireless adapter also supports 4 controllers, which you own. If you ever want to play some local multiplayer it will have you covered. You may find yourself regretting a wired one.

You know what would be great? If you could craft coupons into a game, lol.. or at least have a higher rate at crafting a game than coal gives you.

Yeah downloads have been horrible the past few days. Which is weird cause for almost the first whole week of the sale I still got 1 mb + the entire time.
Do the prince of persia games support controllers?
Forgottens Sands and PoP 2008 played fine with my Logitech Dual Action. Not sure about the earlier ones.

Ugh. I am not liking the Sequence control scheme thus far. For stepmania/ITG, I usually play with dfjk controls, but the tab switching and spell casting controls are difficult to use on keyboard. I can do spasmodic difficulty 4x no problem, if not for the tab switching.

Just did the Crime Craft holiday achievement. That might just rank up with one of the worst shooters I played with my life. Having snowballs bound to f1 which you can't change only made things so much more enjoyable :bomb:.

Well hopefully I never have to play that again for any reason.

You can change it in the options menu. I rebound it to RMB.

The aiming on that game is horrendous so I am not disagreeing with your assessment that it is one of the worst shooters. However, snowballs are bound to f1 initially but you can change it. I changed it to one of my mouse buttons.

It still didn't fix the godawful aiming but at least it wasn't totally unplayable with having to use f1 to throw snowballs.

Re: the aiming

I'd have red crosshairs on enemies and throw my snowball and it'd sail five feet to the side of them. It was infuriating.
I think everything just crashed. I was browsing their forums and now they won't load at all.
This is really frustrating. Rock of Ages stalled and now won't download no matter what, so I tried to download Sequence and sure enough, that's downloading. Still at turtle pace, but downloading nonetheless.

Wow, didn't see that. I got the achievement so I could care less now. Oh well, at least it's another one off the pile.

Does anyone know how to get the Space Pirates and Zombies one easily (I checked the wiki but I never got a cookie to spawn)? It's the last one of games I own right now that I have to do.
Yeah, that I don't understand. SMB, Fate of the World, etc., I can understand. Jamestown? That took me, starting from scratch, like 30 minutes. And it was a ton of fun doing it, as well. Looking forward to (eventually) getting back to that game. (My god, the backlog... why are there so many games? WHHYYYYY?)
I can't understand people not wanting to play Fate of the World, either. I really like that game and had a blast getting the achievement. I am always trying to win the scenarios it was nice to finally get rewarded for purposely losing. :)

Jamestown was fun as well. SMB... I am not a fan.

You had me in total agreement until that last part. SMB is one of the best games I have played in years.

Onto a different train of thought..I have not heard much for impressions on the Star Wars strategy game on sale today. Anyone have any impressions?

This is just a heads up, just in case some people still have this achievement on their list. The Rusty Hearts achievement, you can skip part of what is listed on steamcheeves.com. You don't have to do both scouting missions from Elma, do the first, then go to george to join the Militia, then do the simple task.

Also, the easiest characters to do this with are the fast guy with the gauntlets and the chick with a sword. They do the most damage and can clear out sections quickly. Just spam X, A, S constantly.

I decided to give Sequence a shot, and I'm up to 8 coupons and 3 coals.

Has anyone else had trouble buying games using Paypal. I keep getting
"An unexpected error has occurred. Your purchase has not been completed.
Please contact Steam Support."

that's all I use is Paypal.... I've never had an issue besides it timing out or something and I get that error once from it.

Try it again, or stop downloading something, that might help.
Is there a CAG steam trading thread? Steam forums are all greedy idiots who want $50 games for $5 games.
Eh....it's like that everywhere. I won the Complete F.E.A.R. pack...and was offered games worth 5 dollars for it...twice.

You mean Empire at War? It's been awhile since I played it and while it might not be the deepest RTS game it was pretty cool because you had both land and space battles. Plus you can use the Death Star to blow up planets. For the $5 they are charging for it, I say it's worth it if you like Star Wars.

I was having that problem during the summer sale. It happens in the client, right? I was able to use the web and it worked fine. I think it has to do with your request timing out. If important packets are in transit for an extended period of time, the data is cut off as a precaution to avoid data theft. You can stop downloading too, like xycury said.

I love this winter sale/gift pile. I haven't won anything significant, but was able to trade a game i didnt want for the orange box. I also bought and traded a $5 game for Portal 2. I searched forums for someone with Portal 2, then offered them a game in there want list. I eventually got lucky.

That's Orange Box, Portal 2 and a bunch of coal for $5 and some of my time exploring games that were collecting dust in my library.
Good lord, people download the save file to even do the Jamestown one?
I'm showing 37 minutes of playtime, but I could've done it faster if I'd remapped my keys immediately to WASD with the arrows for the guns and done higher difficulty to get more gold so I could buy the Charge ship. If I'd "cheated", I could've saved a half-hour; I'm sure that's what's driving save file usage. Considering the coal I got for my work, I sorta wish I'd used the save file and gotten it over with.

pretty much. the only time i quickly trade anything is when i'm willing to take a loss.

I would have used a Jamestown save file if I could find one. I'm not a fan of those games, too much stress. Took me about 20 minutes to get the achievement, and it was pretty easy.

Yeah. I'm definitely not a fan of this "Steam economy" that has popped up overnight. So many lowballers and multiple-account coal hoarders making it hard to get a decent trade going. It'll probably calm down eventually but I have no doubt all the future events will be the same way.

But hey, the sales haven't been this good in a while and I can't say I'm not having fun.

Yeah, it kinda stinks....I'm trying to just get the Binding of Issac with my poor 4 pieces of coal (which people say is worth .60 a piece, and the game is 2.49) but people want like 10. It's ridiculous.

If you hold out long enough, you should be able to get your price for it, but the price of coal has dropped quite a bit. It's really frustrating. especially since I seem ONLY able to get coal for my achievements (well, with the exception of the 1 DOTA2 Beta that I got and traded away.)

Fortunately, I've managed to do pretty well with my coal, I think. Definitely can't complain about what I've walked away with this sale, but I really, REALLY preferred the Summer Sale and the Ticket Booth. That was a MUCH MUCH MUCH better prize gimmick, I think. This has just been... well, taken advantage of to an extreme by a ton of people on the steam forums. It really sucks.

I agree, stinks when people go and ruin it like they have. I wish it had been more like the summer one.

Now you tell me, after I had to do it three times with the vampire guy. It was beginning to annoy me that I was only getting C's. I had to get him to level 4 and upgrade some of his powers to get a B.

A lot of work for a piece of coal.

I wish they could have some system in place to get if not free games discounts on games you want. Like the thing for me is this sale is just so random. Yes I got fucking lucky with my crafting but then again people have gotten shittier games.

I guess I like the idea that I could get a game more than getting DLC for a game I don't care too much about. Maybe for the summer sale they could have trade x amount of item to get a coupon good for a game you want (at your choosing) that is usable at this sale.

My question is, if the value of currency decreases as the number of units in circulation increases, how are people figuring out the overall value of coal when coal amount is hidden from other people viewing your inventory? I haven't heard of Steam releasing total coal distribution figures. It seems safe to say that the value is entirely arbitrary given the unknown quantity in circulation. I could tell you that I have 57 coal already and you must offer me at least 10 coal for The Binding of Isaac, and in reality I only have 8.

Exactly, it's the Steam forum inflating it. You see threads of people saying they have over 200-300 pieces of coal, which I just don't believe. Then you have people with 80 saying they are buying coal, and because they have so much they are offering it at .50 a piece. It's ridiculous, and there is no way to tell. I just want the Binding of Issac...lol.

I sat and played Rusty Hearts for an achievement for like 45 minutes... 45 minutes of my life I will not get back. All I got was a stupid coupon for a game I can get 10x cheaper during a Steam sale.

Yeah, that game is terrible. I know people complained about the DotA clone, but in comparison it wasn't bad. It could at least be fun. I can't complain though, I got Day of Defeat with Rusty Hearts. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's a decent distraction.

I thought the game was kinda fun for the amount of time I spent playing it. Thought I probably spent more time downloading and updating the game.
I was wondering why the people in the cutscenes seemed to talk over each other though.

Yeah, it's manipulative. If I had a Voxatron Bundle key left, I would give it to you, but sadly I don't. :( You might be able to find someone in one of the two Steam trading threads here who would trade or give you one. Sounds like most members at the Steam forums are bluffing (at least for now) and you might be able to hold out long enough until they concede. But if enough members are gullible enough to actually agree to their demands, you might not get a chance. :( Good luck.

I don't think the combat was bad, but how the dungeons and such are setup are very bland. Just one just corridor that's walled off until you clear it. Also, the actual backgrounds stink.

Oh well, I appreciate the thought! And yeah, I'm going to hold off and hope someone will eventually do a trade. I tried again on the Steam forums and a guy posted after I started a thread saying I'd pay 4, saying he'd pay 5 in case someone wanted to trade with me lol.

I swear to you. The dude I traded with a few days ago had a retarded amount of games and coal. I mean it was just dumb. He basically filled the trade window over and over with games upon games upon games he had won to prove to me he wasnt lying cuz it showed his inventory as empty when inspected. Turns out you can make it private.

Basically people got themselves a ton of penny humble indie bundles and a million steam accounts and made it their job to win a ton of free games and coal.

I myself have 30+ coal and have won 4 games now with only my main account and my wifes account, which has just Zuma Deluxe on it, lol. Imagine if someone buys 20+ humble indie bundles at a penny each. It inflated the coal market where normal folks cant keep up.

I dont know why I feel like I just wrote a ton.
it seems like the ones on Amazon are all 3rd party. Are these ok for third party? :whistle2:| I mean.. I have a $20 Amazon GC... the what's "supposed" to be official white one is $21.99, whereas the wired black is $29.99.
Regarding Wireless receivers for 360 controllers - I got mine through ebay from Taiwan. Might be a rip-off but the feedback was good, so I bit. It came it totally legit packaging and has the hologram sticker. I suspect that it's not a ripoff, but instead a legit version that is intended for sale in Asia, but distributors there can make a profit selling them back into the USA, even with shipping factored in. I spent $12 for it, including shipping, and had it in 8 days.

If you buy one, from Taiwan or anywhere, make sure you go to the Microsoft website and download and install the latest driver. It wouldn't work for me with the native driver that Windows 7 installed. You can get that driver here. Once I got the correct driver from the Microsoft website, everything was smooth sailing.

There are a ton of wireless receiver knockoffs that may look legit. The official ones usually cost more.

They could've fixed that so easily so that it couldn't be exploited by making it so that your Steam account would have to exist for 30 days prior to the giftpile giveaway to be able to participate.
