Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I really can't complain so far, I've gotten 15 coal and 5 coupons (one of them being the Bethesda 50%, that I was able to trade for Bastion and another game to be determined.)

I could have done much worse.

I got super lucky, a couple games in I found an arcade and rolled with the slot machine which gave me a dollar and immediately unlocked Cain :p. It's decent fun so far, farthest I keep getting is the last map before the final boss. An update to make the random generation more fair would improve it immensely as it can be frustrating getting no keys or no bombs on a level forcing you to leave behind a lot of goodies.

If Binding of Isaac achievements are not registering:
Program files X86>steamapps>common>the binding of isaac>
delete flashachievements.exe and replace it with this user created file.

load up your game and all the achievements you have gotten so far should pop all at once. Apparently the current flashachievements file that downloads from steam is broken.

If you don't want to try that save file from earlier posts because it will unlock most of the achievements, you can try using cheats to increase your luck and make it faster to clear levels while looking for devil rooms.
I've got quite a few things this year. This has been awesome! Also the gundemonium collection is on sale for $4.99. I haven't seen this advertised anywhere.
We're all hoping for the Gundemonium Collection to get a deal of the day price since each of the three games has a winter achievement.

I've gotten tired of this sale....20+ achievements, a couple crap coupons and about 15 pieces of coal. Most of the coupons are for crap I already own, or for things that are virtually untradeable.
Quick question: Gamersgate has Deus Ex DLC for cheap, are they handing out Steam Keys for it? Interested in buying some.
I think Amazon matched that price.

Deus Ex I think is Steamworks only so any place you buy it will cough up a Steem key

That's correct and Deus Ex: HR and the DLC are definitely Steamworks. I bought both on Amazon and registered them on Steam just fine.

yeah, I agree

I went to download Shogun 2 on Steam and the game is 20GB  it does not include any of the DLC by the way I'm just downloading the base game

I am getting pretty good download speeds though time remaining is 6+ hours, I'll let it download overnight and play it tomorrow morning

I bought Xotic and hopefully you haven't already. I'm optimistic that my bad purchase can be chalked up as taking one for the team. I figured that since I'm a huge FPS fan it'd be hard not to eek out just a little bit of fun from the title.

It's technically sound - looks great. Unfortunately, it really ends up just feeling like a FPS trainer. Everything is timed, combos are counted, levels are designed around jumping and movement. Doing well grants you experience to upgrade abilities and weapons, which you can then carry over to the next mission. There are also multiple gametypes for each level.

I know, I know, it still doesn't sound too bad, right?

It's just really dull. The things you shoot at are mostly colored orbs and a handful of weird little semi-human guys that fire at you slowly and dumbly. There's really no compelling plot to keep you moving forward and shooting at dots just doesn't feel especially rewarding.

Unless you're just trying to, I dunno... benchmark your first person shooter skills or something, I don't think most people would get much enjoyment out of the game. I'm a fan of the genre and I can't see myself playing it again. I'll just go play an actual FPS game that features non-generic weapons, enemies, and objectives if I want to "get better" or just enjoy that type of game. I can honestly say that I regret the purchase.
I got the save file working but no achievements are coming through. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to do anything once I'm in the game?
Naw, I started getting bombarded with achievements as soon as I launched the game.

Can anyone confirm if any of the Beat.Trip games' winter achievements will count toward a reward? Without getting into too much detail, I really don't like either of these games much and would rather not spend more time with them if these achievements aren't going to pay off for me.

There are 20 games left with cheevos and a Steam Guard cheevo. So I would be assuming that unless they change up the 6 cheevos to 7-8 a day, there is a chance they might not be cheevos (each game of the gundemonium collection has one so they might just keep it to one game). Then again the bit trip beat one takes about 20 mins if you need to beat the first level or 2 mins if you done the first level.

The runner one depending on the achievement will vary.

Swords of the Stars seems like a great 4x game. Though thats exactly what I thought when I bought sins of a solar empire. Been great fun playing with ai because no one exists online...
Anyone know how the multiplayer is?

You can unlock the Braid achievement in less than a minute. Go into options, turn difficult to Perfect, and miss the first gold bar you can miss on stage 1-1. Bam, done.

The Amnesia achievement can first be completed on level 1-4, so it'll take about 6 minutes to do depending on how good you are. Play on normal and make it to the extra stage. About halfway into the extra stage, there's a hill with fire that leads to some platforms. Don't jump on the platforms, and you'll inevitably run into a spider and get the achievement.

P.S.: I know they are saying it can be done on 1-6 first, but it's actually 1-4. You just have to be good enough to duck under the jutting rocks at the beginning. Really easy IMO.
It almost makes me angry getting the tough cheevos (I'm looking at you, AaaAAHAHhhh) when all I get is lousy coal. 19 coal! NINETEEN! And 4 stupid coupons:

-50% Valve
-50% Rockstar Games
-25% 2K Games
-50% The Witcher 1
-10% Deep Silver (Valve is taking the piss)

At least most of the games are fun, but still. 23 objectives and no games? Lame!
It could be worse. You could have 31 coal, 6 worthless coupons and won two cheap games you already owned (Revenge of the Titans and The Ship).
O well. Any chance Driver: San Francisco or Swords of the Stars Lord of Winter will go on sale?
Swords of the Stars Lord of Winter is a daily deal right now

That's really good info. For what it's worth, I did get the Everyone.Played Braid (Beat.Trip Runner) and Jingle.Bells (Beat.Trip Beat) cheevos. I'm just not going to bother playing more to get any more. I can see why people like these games but there's a precision that's required which I no longer seem to have. In the case of Runner there's that jarring failure and rewind of the entire level that jolts me every time. To be fair, levels are quite short so far in Runner (I made it to 1-8 with no major problems) so rewinding isn't awful but it's also not my cup of tea overall.

Sorry, didn't want to make this a "why I don't like game X" post but maybe I will have saved some people the trouble if this is both not their kind of game and if the cheevos aren't even valid for the promotion.

Yep, got the Braid achievement first and you're right; very easy.

For some reason I am sucking at level 1-4 and can't even get past the second or third steps of gold pieces (I'm currently on level 1-8 or 1-9). I think it's one of those things where I'm anticipating things too much now so my memorized timing is mixing with my reactionary timing. Maybe I'll try that again tomorrow then.

Anyway, thanks for the great tips and encouragement!
Public Service Announcement: Avoid Sword of the Stars 2. The game is buggy and unfinished and people are lucky if they're able to finish a game without crashing. It is almost literally completely unplayable and it baffles me why it would be a daily deal. Woah. I was thinkin' about grabbing it, but I'll wait.

I have finally made it through the tutorial in Champions Online. If anyone still has presents they have to give, look me up as Fabio in the city. I'm trying to get to level 6 so I can fly.

Concerning the Bit.Trip Runner achievements in particular, I've never seen people work so hard for coupons and virtual coal. Personally, I wasn't too thrilled with Bit.Trip Runner, due mostly to its choppy framerate. (I have a more than capable machine, for those that are wondering.)

Only two and a half hours before the next crossover.

I haven't had any problems whatsoever with framerate in Bit.Trip Runner.
I haven't had any problems whatsoever with framerate in Bit.Trip Runner.
There are some setups that do not play nice with Bit.Trip Runner whatsoever. I know I can't go more than 10-15 mins without BSODing because it does not play nice with the sound card. I could workaround it, however I don't really desire playing it that much since I got it in an indie bundle.

I picked up the Two Tribes pack (Edge, Rush, Toki Tori) as it was cheap and I haven't bought all that much, so I thought I'd try

utopianmachine was not exaggerating when she said the Edge achievement was a bit, erm, "out of the way". How the hell people found those switches is beyond me :???:

p.s. I've just discovered this smiley and feel the need to use it RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW :-({|=. It's now on my New Year's Resolution List to use as much as possible.

Even though I've gotten mostly coupons from the coal crafting. We're complaining about free things here.

Got 50% Bioshock 2, 50% multiwinia, and The Polynomial (already owned). And some other crappy coupons have shown up in my inventory.

But chances are someone else has a cheap game they got free. So check the steam trade thread, traded The Polynomial for E.Y.E. And maybe once the coupons go live and the sale is over, those who missed out will either appreciate a gift of a coupon or will gladly trade/buy them. Again, they're free, unless you are actually buying games just to get the coal. Actually winning something from doing an achievement is sort of fun I've found, even if you have to spend 30 min figuring out why The Binding of Isaac achievements aren't unlocking and fix it.

Also is everyone expecting the last day to just be repeat sales of past days? Don't they always do that?

Thank you for thinking of me, but I don't own Edge. Hence I haven't done the achievement nor even know what it is. :D

If I may, I'd like to ask what your specs are. I've tried everything with my setup, including setting VSync and additional Buffering options in the nVidia Control Panel. Nothing can penetrate Bit.Trip Runner's defenses; It refuses to adopt a playable framerate.

It works great on my laptop, but it has the standard Intel i3 video. Haven't tried on my desktop, generally I keep the indie/low requirement games on my laptop and save the desktop for the big, bright, pretty titles. I may load it up out of curiosity, now. :)

I expect new dailies today (Fri) and tomorrow (Sat), a recap day Sunday, and then the sale ends noon Pacific Monday (Jan 2). I base this off the bottom of the Objectives page showing calendar date images for the 30th and 31th.

I can only imagine the TPS (threads per second) carnage on the Steam forums trading area come Sunday. I currently have 14 coal; gonna craft that and whatever left over I earn these next two days goes towards the raffle. It's no longer worth trying to trade such a small amount.

I was originally planning on holding on to my coal for the drawing.... but with people getting several hundred coal in their accounts through various methods... the chances are even worse now than the already astronomical number that I was before.

I should have enough coal to craft 6 times by the end of the sale. So far sitting at 36 coal, 9 worthless coupons and my one game win Hydrophobia. Cheap game right now but at least something that I didnt already have on Steam.

Hoping that the Witcher 2 pops back up during the recap sale. I passed on it the first time as I did not realize that it had built in 360 controller support. Makes a difference when playing in the living room or bedroom.

Just bought Lost Planet 2. What motivates me to buy these awful, awful games? What is my problem? I barely avoided buying Duke, Hard Reset, and EYE this sale.

Hard Reset is a good game.Old School , challenging and fun.Duke sucks and Eye doesnt looks so good either.

Btw New Sales are coming,

Might and Magic Games and Civ Games so far.

It was rough around the edges, but it's definitely not "awful, awful"
Concerning the Bit.Trip Runner achievements in particular, I've never seen people work so hard for coupons and virtual coal. Personally, I wasn't too thrilled with Bit.Trip Runner, due mostly to its choppy framerate. (I have a more than capable machine, for those that are wondering.)

Only two and a half hours before the next crossover.
That's so weird that the game gives you and others a poor framerate. I wonder what the cause is. Good luck getting it to work properly, but I agree that these Bit.Trip games aren't worth the achievements. This is coming from a guy who likes unique music games (Vib Ribbon, Parappa, Rhythm Heaven, etc.).

If there's a recap it will be tomorrow. Since coupons are eligible starting this Monday, the sale will end this Sunday (as in, the last daily deals start tomorrow).

I always assumed it when it said new deals through Jan 1st, I included Sunday. Plus if the coupons start on Monday, it won't be until the update on Monday at 1 PM EST.
Thank you for thinking of me, but I don't own Edge. Hence I haven't done the achievement nor even know what it is. :D
So who in god's name was it?

Whoever, wherever, you are, well observed.
