Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Oh please. The issue was not Valve. The issue was greedy customers. So many accounts were banned because people were coal farming. Blame those sad sacks that accumulated 300 coal and robbed the gift pile. Valve can't really be blamed for running out of prizes ONE DAY before the event ends when you have so many people that ripped the rest of us off by getting 10x the coal and prizes.

I personally loved the promotion and found it fun. The sale itself was bleh but that was just a product of me owning everything that was on sale that I was interested in -- other than LA Noire! So the sale ended on a great note for me. I was hoping for LA Noire at $20 and it hit 12.50, score!

I also won a few games. Revenge of the Titans, The Ship and The Ball. I wish I could have been one of the lucky guys that won a copy of Skyrim or something but there were probably only 5 copies in the pile and all of them were probably won by some coal farming clown. Which sucks but isn't Valves fault. It will be their fault if they don't prevent against it next year, though. Now that they know how sorry some people are they should know what to prevent next year.
Dude, I'm not saying there weren't major issues caused by people scamming the promotion, we all know that was the case. I'm simply saying that if they were down to only their own promotional items, it still isn't cool that some folks were ending up with 5 30% off coupons in a row. And DOTA2 betas are a Valve item the last time I checked and are also highly in demand, just pointing out that they could have handled it a bit more smoothly. Overall, yeah it was a cool promotion, even if it really was just a giant promo for their new trading system, but yeah, I got some good stuff too. It is sad that some people took it to the extreme in their need to get free stuff ... but then, we never ever see that type of behavior around here .... ;)

I wish I'd known about the running out earlier; coulda traded my coal for some dinky games I wanted. Shoulda been clued in by the coupon streaks people had today, but I just figured probability was being a bitch, as usual.

so, technically the scammers saved valve money by running out all the gifts and then having all their accounts locked and the gifts removed ... but not put back in the pile

Brilliant move by Valve. I wonder if they're able to reactivate the keys associated with the peoples accounts on the games they've purchased. Ban them for abusing their shoddy poorly thought out winter sale event....take back all the gifts and coupons they've won without returning them to the pile, then reselling the keys they stole from you by banning your account.

+1

Somebody get this man a beer.
It is on the main client... on the gift pile page, there is an annoucement in a large red box in the lower right corner.

"Please Note!
If you unlock an achievement on or after 12/31 your prize will be a free Valve game, a coupon toward a Valve game, or Holiday Coal."
My resolution is 1920x1200 and I can see all of the relevant gift box information in the client at the top - except for that "large" red box, which is hidden a few scroll-knobs down.

I don't agree with the hate for this enjoyable Objectives week, but the criticism for the way they "informed" us of the change from Gift Pile to Shit Pile seems understandable enough. I'd certainly have eight coals for the draw instead of one, had I known. Not a big deal, though.
Can anyone who has played the original Fallout games recently tell me how they hold up? I only just figured out they're 15 year old games... :p
I would say from nowadays point of view, each combat encounter can takes too long to play out. But the elaborate your-turn-their-turn combat sequence is arguably the strength and the spirit of the franchise. So if you like turn base strategy with good story, this will be a blast.

However, the graphics is old! Without applying user mod, the graphics will be pretty low resolution (pixel really didn't age too well on todays HD wide screen monitor). So really doubt whether people who are used to seeing HD polygon on PC can get pass this.

Hope this help.

(Oh, make sure to get the game from GoG.com. Their version is the best! And you can safely skip Fallout Tactics.)

Thanks for the input. After reading this and watching some gameplay videos, I think I'm going to pass. The game appears a bit glacial and uninteresting. Plus, as I'm not interested in the newer Fallout games, I'll likely not be too into their precursors.

I'm afraid if I but it, I'll play it a couple hours then never touch it again. ;)
Pretty sure that was just added recently, I don't recall seeing that earlier today
Indeed. I just refreshed the page from last night and it popped up. Was planning on spending the day playing for some achievements but don't think I'll bother now.

If anyone has a 50% Valve coupon that they don't mind giving away, please PM me. :)

...I'll give you a 33% Football Manager 2012 coupon or 50% Universe Sandbox coupon if anyone wants...

Sure glad I decided to not go out of my way with these holiday achievements by only doing a few of them for games I already owned. I could tell from the posts in this thread alone I would only be disappointed if I dedicated too much time to it.

Ended up picking up these over the course of the sale, assuming today is a recap:

Pendulo Adventure Pack
Portal 2
Total War - Shogun 2 & DLC (via Amazon)
Hydrophobia
Avadon
EYE Divine Cybermancy (boy glad i got it cheap don't really like it)
Renegade Ops (via Amazon)
Patricians & Merchants Bundle (Has Patrician 3, Darkstar One, Great Art Race)
Frozen Synapse + Soudtrack
Jamestown DLC + Soundtrack
X Superbox
Civ V GTY (via Amazon)
Bastion + Soundtrack
Sequence
Dungeon Defenders DLC
SPAZ
Magicka DLC
Dungeon Seige III DLC
Puzzle Agent 1 & 2
Heroes of Might & Magic V Pack
Hoard Complete Pack (Awesome game!)
Dungeons & Dragons Daggerdale (via trade)

Don't know of anything I want from the recap, but considering these non dailies:

Elven Legacy
Post Mortem
Hector
Scratches
Emerald City Confidential
Lost Horizon
Still Life
Still Life 2

I think I'm done with the sales. Lots of major titles were too expensive for my taste, so I looked around and picked up alot more small ones than usual. My haul this winter.

Rage
Metro2033
Dawn of War 2: Retribution + some DLC
Star Wars: KOTOR
Frozen Synapse
Dungeon Defenders
Binding of Isaac
Toki Tori
Edge
Defense Grid DLC (You Monster!)
Terraria gift for someone

Total cost: 43.78 euros

I'm probably also going to buy Sacred Gold and Capsized for 2,50 each.

I got some coupons, Day of Defeat Source, Two Worlds II and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for my achievements, so I don't regret it one bit xD

You got AC Brotherhood? Wow thats hot. Winning that must of felt good since its newish.

I won Hitman Blood Money
Valve Complete Pack
and Stalker Call of Pripyat

Traded Hitman and Valve Complete and bought this dude Fallout 3 GOTY for Skyrim.

Really fun sale/promo imo. Too bad so many people ruined it for those of us that didnt try to cheat the system.

Yeah, caused me to purchase AC1+2 though, lol. Oh well, luckily they were on sale.

i was making out like a bandit towards the beginning of these sales. of the first 5 achievements i got 3 games, Beat Hazard Complete, The Orange Box and Runaway A Road Adventure. My first coal craft got me SPAZ. after that it's been nothing but coal and coupons and coal for coupons, but i still enjoyed this whole thing.

How easy is the CS-Source achievement for someone who has never played the game but owns it? :)

Couple mins or are we talking a lot of work necessary?

Wow remind me not to trade with you :p. You run a hard bargain. You ripped that guy off for Skyrim. Do you sell cars? :). In all honesty though that is awesome.

Shoite, and all I wanted for my entire inventory was the Cthulhu Saves the World & Breath of Death VII Double Pack. (Which, by the way [and predictably enough], got no takers.)

I agree about the exploiters, though - The thought of abusing the Humble Bundle still amazes me.

I didn't know my Renegade Ops + DLC would be so interesting for trading. People bring so many offers! Too bad they're all uninteresting so far :p
Can anyone who has played the original Fallout games recently tell me how they hold up? I only just figured out they're 15 year old games... :p
It's not a matter of 'do they hold up' more so of 'do you like true, old-school, turn-based RPGs?' If you do then Fallouts 1 and 2 are classics. Note they are nothing like Fallout 3 in terms of game play, just thematically.
Gotta love CAG's. Bitching about free stuff. Yep, Valve's totally evil. I mean come on...
Hahaha, you've got a point there. (Although, "Valve is evil" is definitely a hyperbole.) I think it's more the minor frustration of putting effort into something only to get coupons that are virtually useless. (After all, what CAG would want a "25% off Valve" coupon when waiting for the next sale will probably yield much larger savings?)

I can't complain at all, though - I got Hydrophobia for free (Traded Capsized for it.) during the sale, so I'm still horribly excited.

Honestly, the guy had so many great offers I was beyond shocked he sent me a pm and asked me to add him. He did already own skyrim, Im betting he won it and didnt have many valve games. I gave him hitman as a token of good will, it wasnt even part of the deal, I just kinda felt he deserved it and its the only other thing I had.

Its sad valve ran out of third party coupons and games. But I wonder how much of a drain all these new accounts created for the sale had on things.

Know what a huuuuge highlight of Steam is for me?

I bought Skyrim on Steam for my hubby. We've spent the last hour and a half playing together. That is, I'm logged into his account in offline mode, and he's logged online. And we've been playing Skyrim at the same time.

So. Freaking. Awesome. :applause:

Well at this point unless I can find a good trade on the SPUF while watching Twilight Zone today, I'll be entering my 42 coal into the drawing.

Wish those forums wouldn't bug out every 20 mins with a database error.
Gotta love CAG's. Bitching about free stuff. Yep, Valve's totally evil. I mean come on...
At least it's not nearly as bad as SPUF (although the user base over there is probably 100000x larger so that's to be expected)

I definitely think Valve made a misstep in how they handled the promotion. All coupons or all games would've been fine, but mixing the two kicks in psychology they should've known better to avoid. If people craft a 10% coupon and their friend crafts a DOTA 2 beta invite (yes, this happened to two people I know), then the person with the coupon is going to feel pissed that, for the same time or effort, he got less than someone else. Basic psychology: we don't want to get less than what other people get, or we become unhappy with what we got, no matter what it is.

Honestly though, this sale seems really lackluster. There have been no extremely worthwhile deals as of yet. Hopefully Valve has something epic planned for the New Year but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Yeah, it's pretty funny. Some guy defending Steam on one of their forum threads said (and I'm paraphrasing): "I got five free games and from what I'm reading that was LESS than what most people got." Uh... no. Most people got none.

What I would really like to see from Steam is some program that rewards people for purchases (over a long span) and gives you free games/vouchers/whatever based on that... as opposed to a kooky stunt that favors the ubermensch Steam traders... you know, the ones with a hundred plus games, TF2 items, etc. in their inventories. I accept the fact Steam has that seedy little underbelly of crazy traders that look to buy low and sell high but I'd much prefer if their sales were more directed at the general user base and not require having to wade into that muck to get some value off of a random game you don't want, coal, or mediocre coupons.

This is my first steam sale where I didn't purchase a single game. Out of all of the games they had on sale, I either already had the games I wanted or the sale prices were too high. The only exception is LA Noire, which is at a very good price today, but I will just hold out for the console version. I cannot push myself to purchase any indie games either knowing they will probably be a part of the many indie bundles that come out every few weeks.
Looks like recap day confirmed. Seeing Serious Sam 3, Saints Row 3, Portal 2, etc. all discounted to their largest past discounts.

Shame.
I didn't expect anything different. Don't think I've purchased anything in the second week of the sale.
Honestly though, this sale seems really lackluster. There have been no extremely worthwhile deals as of yet. Hopefully Valve has something epic planned for the New Year but I'm not going to hold my breath.
I agree, while I understand I'v been buying games on steam for years now and own most that I want, it did seem like there discounts were not that great. Most stuff was the same price as the Autumn sale which wasnt that great either. It may just be in the light of Amazon putting up some killer deals, like DS3 for $4.99 as opposed to Steams $19.99.

I am happy for the people who missed Portal 2 the first time. I got it for 25 for 360 and later for 15 for PC and I could not have been more happy with those purchases. I got more fun per minute out of that game than any other game this year, and I recommend it to anyone who can physically run it.

I've had a great sale, got everything I had my eye on this year.

Deus Ex and DLC for $15,
L.A. Noire for $12.50,
Total War: Shogun 2 for free because of a trade,
and a ton of indies that have taken me by surprise.

I'll be busy for a while. Absolutely satisfied with the sale.
Holy shit you guys are hard to please.
I don't think you understand. Valve owes it to me to put every game on sale for $5 so that I can add them all to my backlog of a hundred games and never play them. I'm pretty sure it says so in the ToS.
