Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

BOUGHT:

* Nothing at all, but Deus Ex: Human Resources from Amazon for $10

WON:

* 14 Coal and three discount coupons, most of which are worthless to me.

Second. Worst. Sale. Ever. (Only D2D's 6th Anniversary sale was lamer.)

Boy is your face going to be red when you win every game on Steam with that coal!

The odds are fantastic considering about 4 million users on Steam on any given day and all of them having 10-20 coal.

My haul:

Skyrim
Blocks That Matter
L.A. Noire Complete
The Binding Of Isaac
Half-Life Complete
Double Fine Pack
Limbo
Magicka Collection
Lara Croft Guardian of Light
Just Cause 2

...will get Batman: AC Later at around $10. I need to beat AA first! After Skyrim of course. Absurd.

I bought:

Dark Void
Dark Void Zero
Jamestown DLC
Hard Reset
Hoard
LEGO Star Wars Saga (last minute purchase)
Total: 24.56

I got 39 objectives, all the coals that were crafted got me crappy coupons. I have 4 left which will be for the Grand Prize. However I got very lucky in the beginning and got two copies of Dota 2 which were traded for 40 dollars worth of games (at the time, some were later daily deals):

Sonic Generations
Deus Ex GOTY (had never played it before, having a blast.)
EDGE
Rock of Ages

Also won The Orange Box which I traded for coal.

Got Deus Ex Human Revolution and all DLC for 16 dollars at GamersGate. Also Sniper Ghost Warrior for free at Green Man Gaming.

My backlog is so big I managed to be more rational and avoided instant purchases, like the Driver San Francisco and Rochard deals. A friend convinced me to try Fallout, but this was after the FO3 daily deal, so it'll have to wait the Summer Sale. I have a feeling both Deus Ex games will keep me busy for a long time. Not to mention I have barely touched November purchases LA Noire from Thanksgiving and Gray Matter from GG for 10 dollars. Not to mention all the indie bundle purchaes I haven't even touched yet.

My one regret: spending over 3 hours for the Champions Online achievement that was never used.
My last 4 items have been Valve coupons. Come on man, Valve, really?
Please Note!
If you unlock an achievement on or after 12/31 your prize will be a free Valve game, a coupon toward a Valve game, or Holiday Coal.

My best purchase this Christmas is not a game but a game guide.

Skyrim Collector edition hardcover 700 pages guide:drool:

What a wonderful birthday present for myself.
Try exiting out of Steam, go to 'C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\orcs must die!\installer', and reinstall both 'dxsetup.exe' and 'vcredist_x86.exe'.

A lot of times the forever looping pre-reqs will get ya. (Steam really needs to streamline that whole process but I can understand why it remains)

Steam: *psst* "Hey buddy!? Ya want some more of this DirectX? Come on man I know you want it. Just reinstall it like 50 more times dude, come on."
Thanks, I just right clicked on the game and then went to properties>local files>validate cache and it downloaded like 7 things and it worked. And why does steam make us download directx so much?

It's kind of a 2 part problem.

1) DirectX has hundreds of versions, and different devs use different versions. So while they're mostly the same, the difference between September 2009 DirectX might be missing something February 2010 DirectX has. So instead of it being backwards compatible, they just have 2 releases.

2) DirectX doesn't check for prior versions. It'll just install right on top of the old one.
So basically, someone can login in offline mode and play my games while I play them online at the same time? That sounds interesting!
Yes. My husband and I have done this numerous times. Some games won't work with this feature, but I think most do.
I like Legend of Fae and it hardly ever goes on sale. They really need to do a daily deal out of it some day because it just hasn't gotten enough promotion. It's a good game in the Puzzle Quest vein but far less cliche and with some different, unique elements, like having to work against the element of time. You can't just sit there and take all day trying to decide like you can in PQ.
Legend of Fae only came out this summer. It does seem good, but I'll wait until the next sale to get it.

And I know it's been said a ton, but all these indie bundles make me hesitant to buy indie games.
Just a heads up for people who live in this thread alone, if you have the $5 amazon credit you can grab shogun 2 for $2.50
Ugh. I've been trying to get it, but it's sold out or out of keys or something.

$1.49 - Magicka: The Stars Are Left
$20.26 - Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Rock of Ages, Bastion, Sonic Generations
$2.49 - Demolition, Inc.
$1.87 - Greed Corp
$1.99 - Patricians and Merchants (3 games)
$4.37 - E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy, Avadon
$9.98 - The Sherlock Holmes Collection (6 games), Defense Grid: The Awakening DLC: You Monster!
$3.23 - Psychonauts, Dungeons of Dredmor: Realm of the Diggle Gods

Total: $45.68 for 21 items = $2.16/item Not bad

Won: Portal (already owned), GRID, Torchlight (already owned)
I'm gonna go ahead and buy Dinner Date. I'm interested in experiencing it. For 1.25$ and its been listed as one of the most quirky games of the year.
I liked Dinner Date for the experience it was. It can easily be completed in 15 minutes or so, but it's a worthy 15 minutes.

That thing is amazing. I bought it for my husband and I've enjoyed looking through it as well. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a comprehensive, beautiful guide.

Aw wtf, seriously? I set aside some free time to try to attempt a chunk of these that I didn't get to earlier. Bummer. =/

Sheesh, from the looks of it, I'm the only one who never won anything. 30 objectives, and all I have to show for it is 29 coal and a crappy coupon. Hell, I would've been happy getting one of the TF2 hats.

Why don't you craft it? Or trade it?

Trading coal is the way to go. Maybe not at this point, but earlier in the sale you could do quite a bit with coal. Throughout the sale I got about 20 games through coal trading :)
~$10 usually

Steam Powered User Forums. It's a zoo in there, but if you trade smart, you can get a whole lot for just a little.

Total: $38.74

Did 35 achievements, won 24 coal, 3 games, and 9 coupons. Crafted coal 3 times, resulting in 1 game and 2 coupons. Fun sale!

TF2Outpost is my personal favorite.

Quite a cheap sale for me this year, only got:

Bind of Isaac
Solar 2
Sequence
Defense Grid + DLC
Dungeons of Dredmor

Hmmm... what do they all have in common? ;) All good buys, though, but if I did it again I wouldn't bother with Isaac. I spent more at Gamersgate during the Steam sale, picking up (for cheaper than Steam) Shogun II, Deus Ex: HR DLC, Orcs Must Die! + DLC, Civ V Vikings DLC, X3: Albion Prelude (OK that was 75c cheaper on Steam later), and Sanctum. It was a good year for Gamersgate, they really improved a lot, while Steam has pretty much stayed the same.

If anyone missed the other Deus Ex: Human Revolution deals, it's still under $11 at Shopto.net. I don't think Steam has ever had it cheapest. :)

It's the 2nd January here (about 8am), how do I get my bloshing vouchers to work?! I WASTED MY TIME TRYING TO GET THOSE OBJECTIVES, I'M DYING TOMORROW AND CAN ONLY USE THE VOUCHERS TODAY, STEAM YOU WASTED MY LAST HOURS ON EARTH, I'M NEVER USING YOU AGAIN etc etc.

A small sale for me as well

Magicka: The Stars Are Left
Magicka: Gamer Robes
Faerie Solitaire
Dark Void Zero
Fallout 3: GOTY
Jamestown Gunpowder DLC
Double Fine Pack

$16.96

Also picked up Renegade ops, Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate and Dragon Age II on Amazon and Empire Rome for FREE!
I got it when it first came out before the indie bundles were so numerous and frequent, but yeah I am the same way now and hold off buying indie games figuring they will make it into a bundle sooner or later. I feel really guilty about though. I've seen quite a few people say the same, that they aren't buying indie games because of the bundles and I feel like those bundles ultimately are doing more harm than good for indie developers.

There is such a thing and too much of a good thing sometimes. Maybe people will get burnt out on them and stop paying attention, like they have with Groupon. :p

I think if there were one organization putting them out and very infrequently it would be something special and a rare treat, not something you wait around for, but as it is now there's just too much of it.
Why don't you craft it? Or trade it?
Well, I was planning to craft it. I just wanted to see how much I ended up with so I could save some for the drawing. Since the Gift Pile is just down to Valve games now (most of which I own), I'm not going to bother.

And, unfortunately, that same fact has degraded the cost of coal to where it's difficult to trade it.

Hey, CAG's, I need a bit of a push - Is Bastion worth $5.09?

I avoided LA NOIRE for $12.49 in the hopes of a $7.50 or lower price in the next sale, but I imagine I'll want a game or two until then.

So I have downloaded about 12-15 games this sale season.

The two games that are my favorites are Restaurant Empire 2 and Fate of the World. Restaurant empire 2 is a great sim, you design restaurants, put together a menu, cook, then get new recipies, compete in cooking challenges, and get new restaurants. I've put in an absurb amount of time playing it this weekend.

Fate of the World is a sim where you are a UN like agency. You are supposed to help the world survive for the next 200 years. It's brutally hard and extremely interesting. I just played the 3rd scenario where everything was going pretty good had every country doing ok besides Russia, then I was running out of oil, the world economy collapsed, there was famine in a bunch of places, then I got assassinated.

I also bought all the Fallout NV DLC. Reinstalled Fallout NV, started a new character, and downloaded the top mods. Have been messing around with the new mods and my new char and haven't started any of the DLC. The nevada project mod really makes the core vegas game significantly better. The only thing I don't like is that cooking is still a huge hassel, but with food not healing you... survival seems rather useless. I wish they did something like tagging ingredients so you can quickly loot and make recipies. They have options for the mod, so maybe I could turn it off. The Willow companion mod is also great. Makes you realize how mediocre the companions are in Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and Skyrim.

Bastion ( and its soundtrack) are fantastic, I love the game and I just bought it this sale. You get around 5 to 6 hours out of the main campaign but there is a new game plus and some dlc on the horizon.
Hey, CAG's, I need a bit of a push - Is Bastion worth $5.09?
Yes. One of the best games I played last year. The only game I've ever bought the soundtrack for after playing.
Has Arkham City been patched to fix up the issues from release? Or is it still fairly buggy on PC?
They did issue a patch, and runs better with dx11 options turned on, but I still don't think it runs great with those options turned on. Runs just fine without all the extras though.

I am using a G53 with a gtx460m as my reference.
I've seen quite a few people say the same, that they aren't buying indie games because of the bundles and I feel like those bundles ultimately are doing more harm than good for indie developers.
Oh, I entirely agree. It was one thing when only the Humble Bundle was around. But with so many indie bundles in the market, I feel like it's really serving to undervalue their products.

Read your info on "Fate of the World". Sounded really cool so I went to check it out. Turns out I already own it. LOL.

I. need. help... ;)

Hey, CAG's, I need a bit of a push - Is Bastion worth $5.09?

I avoided LA NOIRE for $12.49 in the hopes of a $7.50 or lower price in the next sale, but I imagine I'll want a game or two until then.
Nope, not all all

Overhyped game that's not a bad game but it's not one of those "oh everyone must play this game" kind of games

First Steam sale?

If that refers to Bastion, then I respectfully disagree. I thought it was one of the best things I played all year.
First Steam sale?
Nope, more like 3rd or 4th Steam sale. Been around long enough to wait on all new games (except Civ V). I just like to have a huge backlog at all times.

I could have bought Skyrim on XBOX 360 when it came out for $60 + tax, or I could have bought 20 games plus DLC. My style is to pick the 20, and get Skyrim at $20 or less later on. There's no big hurry for me because I have 20 other games I can play.
