Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

It's Activision on Call of Duty. I would expect 10% :p

+1 on Newegg. I've always bought my parts from them on all the PCs I've built for years. Their prices are generally quite good and they've never hassled me about returns. I even had to return one motherboard twice.

The reviews there are pretty good to look through too to give you a generally idea of how those parts are working out for other people who bought them.

I like the quick responses in here haha not used to that from other threads / forums.

What I'm looking for I would say is an all purpose (gaming, multimedia, etc) machine for about $500. Already have a 2TB external which I can throw in it, and I already have an operating system.

I was really leaning toward that i5 but I'm not sure I can do that on my budget. I'm not focusing on the gaming aspect too much right now - maybe a $50-80 card that can run my steam backlog (most recent game is like borderlands, oblivion) I'd be happy playing stuff like that on medium then upgrading my card when I get more money / newer games start popping up on steam for around 5 bucks.

A big thing I want too is future expandability. I'd rather put the $$ into the mobo and CPU now and save the GPU for the future.

Id get a mobo that uses the integrated graphics of the i5. Use that for a while and then buy your GPU when you have the cash. Its not a great graphics card but its not worth spending $50 for something that is only marginally better.

I'd agree. The integrated graphics aren't great (even though they're slowly getting better every iteration), it's better to save up for a good GPU. These days the big PC titles are usually GPU bound, not CPU bound, so better to have a good graphics card. Plus while you wait to save up cash and you really hate your GPU, play games on OnLive.
My reloads were doing very little to their servers as they weren't getting a response at all. No holding page just 404s or nothing at all. I didn't need the bundle right when it came out but I already have an auto reload script ready to go with a right click so why not use it? If the page loaded I'd turn it off. It will take much more than that to crash a normal web server.
I didn't mean that you alone brought the site down. I meant that you and a hundred other people like you acting in unison brought it down. I think that's a pretty safe assumption. Well, that combined with the fact that they where wholly unprepared for the influx of traffic that they were gonna receive.

Though I was under the impression that you were doing the auto refresh every 5 seconds from the very beginning. Obviously I was wrong about that. You posted before me that you didn't start doing it until after they started having trouble. I didn't see that until after I posted. So it was just a misunderstanding.

You and hundreds like you probably still contributed to the site coming down. But I can see how you'd resort to auto refreshing after the site started experiencing problems. That's only natural.

That's great info about the PC building thread on CAG. I'm looking to finally upgrade my on-board graphics card to something more robust.

If time is not a issue, wait for the new ivy chips to come out for a price drop on the older generations. Otherwise, I agree with the others considering your budget.
Off topic, but the thread in the PC forum is kind of dead - Anyone here know a lot about building computers? I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction with my first ever build but I'm a little overwhelmed. Picked up so many dirt cheap steam games in the last couple years, figure it's about time I get a good rig that can actually run them all haha. If someone could chat me on steam or something and point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it. My name is Millertime2325. Thanks a lot :)
I also highly recommend tomshardware.com. There are some good threads on their forums about actually building:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/274745-31-step-step-guide-building
They are good about giving feedback if you post your component list.

They also frequently have articles about best gaming cpus/gpus for the money and give recommendations in each price range.

Also, as mentioned above, the newegg video was super helpful when I built my PC a couple weeks ago.

I have an AMD cpu and a 560Ti and it runs really well for me on pretty much everything, even high end new AAA games. If you don't absolutely have to have Intel you can save a bit there.

I know that in terms of benchmark numbers the Intel CPUs are beating the AMD ones, but in terms of real world performance gaming and otherwise I've been really happy with AMD.

As for the video card the 560Ti sounds a bit out of the range you were looking for but I really do believe it's the best bang for your buck right now in terms of discreet gpu cards.

Newegg is a good starting point. If they are within a few dollars of the lowest price I go there. Often times, I can find cheaper deals at Amazon for components and Microcenter if you have one nearby is almost always the best place to buy CPUs. If you don't mind placing an order from different merchants there is money to be saved. Just don't buy some parts now some in a few months some a few months after that etc. By the time you get the last parts your first parts are cheaper/outdated. Wait for deals go to sites like techbargains.com, slickdeals.com, cag, etc and I'd buy parts over 1 month tops. Its usually a good idea to start with a good case/PSU.

Don't skimp on the parts that seem less important like Case/PSU/Memory etc. They go a long way to making your system stable.

Excellent advice. Especially the PSU. I am amazed how many people skimp on that considering how vital it is.

Go with a known name that is reviewed well. The reputable PSU makers will rate their units at or even below what they can perform while the cheap no-name brands I have found will often rate above the actual output.

Also, if you are thinking of upgrading to a better video card in the future I would get a power supply rated above what you actually need for your build if it is within your budget to do so, otherwise you may need to buy a new power supply when you go to buy a new video card.

This is the site I used to make my gaming PC last year:

http://www.hardware-revolution.com/best-budget-gaming-pc-february-2012/

They also have a guide for a 600 dollar workstation. They update it regularly (currently up to date through February 2012) and give you a breakdown on each tier, upgrade options, prices, etc. I highly recommend it. Their forums are really great if you run into any problems as well.

Also I found, but this is just my opinion, that I know if I'm going to be upgrading frequently enough, I'll get a PSU that has modular cables. That way, assuming you get the same manufacture, all you have to do is replace the PSU box, and not rerun all your cabling.
Of course this only matters if you don't make a HUGE jump in PSU output.

A PSU with modular cables cost more and for someone on a tight budget, is not worth the extra cost if every dollar matters in a PC build. Though, I agree, a good PSU is a high priority for a stable PC.

For "decent" $50-80 graphics card look for a ATI 4850 or Nvidia 250 GTS and you'll have no trouble running Borderlands or Oblivion. If you're willing to spend perhaps $10-20 more you can get an ATI 6770 which will give you a little more breathing room. Newegg is great but don't hesitate to also checkout Amazon, NCIX, and Tigerdirect for prices.

Be sure to also check if you PSU meets the minimum wattage requirements and appropriate power connector.

I went with this. Huge thanks to cyborg2040 for the help with this. $470 shipped

Broadway Com Corp A3728-Series A3728-Red Glossy Black Computer Case $35
RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-630SS 630W Modular LED Power Supply $50
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor $230
ASRock H61M-VS Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $55
BIOSTAR Radeon HD 5550 VA5553NHG1 Video Card $60
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory $25

Going to pull this 160GB drive out of my old computer for windows and the 2TB drive for files. Will probably toss in an SSD down the road but for now this will work.

I'll probably also get another 4GB of ram when my budget increases, and a new graphics card eventually. I still have Skyrim and Battlefield 3 for 360, but this build looks good enough to tear through my Steam backlog. And let's be honest, that alone might last me until 2014

Thanks a ton for the help everyone, I really appreciate it. Looking forward to actually being able to play my collection on steam :)

Get a better PSU (Corsair, Antec, PC power and cooling). Trust me, a good psu makes a difference in the sense that if you psu fails, you're SOL. As I said in my last post, a modular psu makes no difference. It looks nicer inside the case and may be slightly easier to build into but you want a high quality psu than a cheap modular psu. Looking at the Reviews of the raidmax, the only positive thing I saw was that it was cheap and that it works (for now). Considering that you'll be using your PC for awhile, the PSU should not be underrated.

I would have built things differently but I think almost all of us would have had our own opinions. It looks like a good starter box either way. Particularly I would have changed the case/psu/mobo/graphics.

So you would've changed almost everything except the chip:D

Slight variations, its really about preferences. That being said, I usually have a hard time sticking to a strict budget. I would have rather seen a good case/psu/mobo and sacrificed on the CPU personally. It's easier to upgrade later.

The point is to start. The last thing I want to do is discourage someone from building because I would build differently or make them upset with their purchase. That's kind of the point of building your own PC. I'm sure he will develop his own preferences based on experience as well.

Don't bother with the 2500k if you are getting an h61 board, you can't overclock on that board so just get an i5 2500 without the k and then get a better gpu with the money saved

I'm usually suspicious of not well known brand PSUs but this one seems to have reviewed well. If it were a piece of junk I would think in coming up on 500 reviews that would show, but 4 eggs out of 5 for that many reviews is a really good rating.

I wish that they put the weight of these things on more sites. Yes, weight. It's one thing I look at when available when shopping for a PSU. The good ones are sturdy and weighty while the cheap ones weigh next to nothing and are basically a tin foil box. :p

Does your current computer meet your needs? I typically advise people to wait until you have enough money to buy all of your components at once (aside from keyboard/mouse/monitor/speakers/etc) You can start swapping out pieces in the future but you want to start with a very good base and you won't hinder yourself with a bottleneck of a single component. Lets say you buy an awesome mobo/processor but your graphics card is weak - regardless of how much money you put into that mobo/proc you are going to be held back by that graphics card so it's money that you didn't have to spend. By the time you can afford to get the video card, you could have bought the mobo/proc at a deeper discount for more savings...

Just my two cents.

Man, back when I was building my first gaming rig in 2010 the ATI HD5770 (my card) was like $180.
Damn these things go down in price quite fast, and we're already in the 7000 series! wow!

I'd recommend waiting and spending some money on a good SSD with high capacity. SanDisk is going to release some new models (which will decrease the price of the older ones)

Aaaand if you want something like a i5 (my proc, the i5 7500), then go for an AMD Phemon x4 or something like that, they're quite cheap and fast.

Tempted to pick up Killing Floor. Not yet sold on it.

The existence of coupons is making impulse Steam sale purchases difficult. Since I know that there's a coupon out there, somewhere, I feel like I'm not getting the best deal if I simply buy at the sale price, and that ends up souring me on it. Anyone else feel that way, or am I just a special kind of crazy?

I think it depends on the price/game and my own inventory. My own inventory sucks (just valve coupons) so I know if I wanted a coupon I'd have to pay for it. So in the case of Killing Floor, paying $1 for a 50% off coupon would only net me an additional dollar plus change discount.

On bigger things I definitely feel the same way.

I'm putting on my Crotchety Old Man hat to say: Jesus Horsefucking Christ, this is the Steam deals thread, not the PC building thread, which by the way isn't dead.

Okay, it's off my chest.
OT I didn't even know there are a CAG group on steam. If anyone would be so kind to send an invite my way my steam is Cyborg2040
Did you get your invite, Cyborg2040? I just searched the group and your name didn't come up. I've sent you a friend request so I can add you to the CAG group.

If it's below 75 percent sure, as a lot of sales seem to be 50-66 percent off on titles that are normally 75, so the coupons make it match or slightly beat the normal sale price. But you're talking about something 85 percent off. This is the cheapest it's ever been, coupons or not. You might get a coupon in the next day or two that'll make it even cheaper, but coupons are expiring in 3 weeks, and it won't hit this sort of price in that time frame, or even at all.

When do coupons expire? Isn't it something like early March?

I've got a few sat in my inventory which I'll have to make my mind up on pretty quickly... *gulp*

I'm just pissed Steam hasn't gotten any Sacred 2 keys back in yet. I was planning to buy it with my coupon shortly after the winter sale. Like 3 days later they said they were out of keys. No looking like they won't have any keys for the people with coupons to buy in time.

Earlier today Green Man Gaming posted on their Facebook page that they'll have a 33% voucher for Alan Wake, which will be released today there and is a Steamworks title. They have removed that post since, so maybe they changed their minds, or someone posted the information too early. Anyway, if anybody is interested in getting Alan Wake now should probably wait a bit more to see if GMG will have that discount.

No, you need to get it. It's a really, really, really fun FPS. Not a world of depth, but tons of replay value and great to play coop.

^Agreed. I'm all thumbs with FPS games and even I had fun messing around on solo mode.

Its a lot of fun even solo, the DLC is just skins so unless you want to contribute to the developer I wouldnt bother. Definitely worth 3 bucks, I mean heck a large iced coffee costs that much.

So Gamersgate is having a sale on Neverwinter Nights 2, which doesn't register on Steam but they also have the expansions on sale including Mysteries of Westgate which isn't available on Steam but will work when installed with the Steam version.

The NWN games are 66% off through the weekend which brings MoW to $3.38.

Maybe it is part of their 33% off horror titles.

33% code definitely works. I paid $23.45.

Daily Deal is Magicka at 75% off ($2.49)

$7.49 for a four pack
$6.49 for the Magicka Collection which includes all DLC

Individual DLC packs are not on sale.

Alan Wake is available and 14% off ($29.99)

Purchase by Feb 23 and get the collector's edition content free.

For what it's worth, I really liked the developer commentary and soundtrack for this game. Even if GMG has this 33% off it might be worth it to buy directly from Steam.
Magicka again? Are they going for the Guiness book of records for most discounted game ever?
At least I haven't got any free or bundle copies of it yet. I think I am up to 9 copies of world of goo.

A new piece of DLC came out today. I think they discount it every time a new piece comes out, every time there is a big sale, every time Steam has an open spot, and, in the case of Amazon, every day that ends in y.

GMG sells the CE as well (those are the extras you mentioned right?), $6 savings if you get on GMG atm. no reason to buy on steam?

Is it at least a content DLC or is it just like Wizard of Oz outfits or something?
