CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
When you have the developer basically saying they did jack squat to optimize it for the PC and essentially just did the bare minimum to get it on there and even had a hard time at that so don't get your hopes up, yeah not so encouraging.

The annoying thing is if it tanks because they totally half assed it they will blame it on there being no PC market for this sort of game, I know it.

*sigh*

Thanks for the heads up on that. I will keep it on my wishlist then and wait for a sale like a good CAG. :D
I agree with this, however you have to remember its a Japanese dev and most of this interview was probably translated and comes off differently than intended. Even if they were doing that the dev would have no reason to say it in such a manner. What I think we can gather from that is not to expect any gameplay changes.
so i played some Kung Fu Strike, its pretty fun and cool lil beat em up title but the levels are very closed in and small but the graphics look nice. If u like kung fu then this is pretty good
I was looking at that one, it looked pretty good so I added it to my wishlist. Glad to hear!
I know this isn't directly related to steam but if it isn't a case against getting physical boxes, I don't know what is:
After watching most of that video, I can only conclude that either a) it was staged or b) most of those people had never opened a box before in their entire lives.
RE: Dead Island GOTY. I can add it to my inventory when I buy it, with the 50 percent discount. So if people want Dead Island GOTY for 10 bucks and don't own the game, find a non-DLC owner and you should be able to get it for 10 bucks anytime, and insanely cheap during a sale. That is, provided it's intended behavior and doesn't get nuked.
I own Dead Island base with no DLC and it's showed up as $19.99 for me since it went live.
I regret buying the Dead Island DLC. I got it for free with that $5 Green Man Gaming credit. I tried to play it and it just kinda sucks. At least compared to the main game. There are no upgrades or leveling up, I didn't think that would bother me but it does.
This. Never played it but after watching it in videos and hearing people's feedback I never had the desire to buy the DLC. Even the base game is fairly lackluster unless you have friends to play it with. There are some times where you don't really need to wait for a GOTY version because, entertainment wise, you aren't really getting any value added.

The Ryder White DLC is a three hour linear jaunt with no leveling. The arena is fairly pointless as you can simply kill zombies and get items in the main game.

Not Steam related, but since when the sale was going on, alot of people were talking about some of the horror adventure games (Scratches, Still Life, etc) during the sale. Well I just saw this on raptr, seems pretty interesting (supposed to be in the style of Amnesia/Penumbra). Figured I'd share it here since its new to me, and I'm sure new to others here who it might interest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpLm8mgtRTc

...and yes, video is stupid, it's just the one that was linked on raptr.

EDIT: And how long do people usually get their gifts from steamgifts (ie, how fast are average users). I only ask because the 2 I've done, I've sent out the gift immediately; yet the one I won has been over for 22 hours and I haven't seen anything. Only thing that concerns me is the talk about phony giveaways from accounts listed as in the "Russian Federation"; of which the user who made the giveaway is from.
On a semi-related note, while I realize this is against everything that CAGs stand for, part of me also wants to pre-order Dark Souls in order to try to vote with my wallet that I want the Japanese to port more of their RPGs over to the PC.

I think perhaps CAG stands for Compulsivly Acquires Games

That would put you right on track. :D

Slender is becoming popular thanks to youtubers like Pewdiepie, Cry, etc. I personally don't like getting scared, so I'll just stick to watching people on youtube get scared.

Thanks for the link. Didn't realize it was free so DLing now. Was going to watch the video, but reading the description of the game I'd probably be spoiling the game by watching gameplay.

And I usually get my gifts pretty instantly but I think you have up to 2 days to send it.

Spent 8 hours last night on Analogue, A Hate Story. Only unlocked two of the endings (and 80% of the log files) but god... I love this "novel/game".
The story is excellent. loved the music, the graphics...
Definitely recommend it. I want more games like this one. ^^

Ya, I'd avoid watching anyways, just because the guy is kinda lame in the video.

Steamgifts site said a week I think, but that seems pretty long. Oh well, no big deal either way; just curious so I'd know other's experiences.

I really think the main issue and what other developers can learn from this is how picky and maybe even "entitled" PC users can get(Though really I guess you could say it is just most PC users expect a certain bar when it comes to games and more so ports). I mean they had no intention to even port the game over until a ton of PC users begged them and made a pettiton to port it over.

It is no surprise then that From Software having no real experience even making PC games decides to go ahead and take the easy road making a port in the truest sense of the word using GFWL just because it is the same network as the 360 version and not even optimizing the performance other than adding in content.

The sad part is now all the people who begged and asked and told them just "get Dark Souls on PC please!" have abandoned them. I know if I was From Software and this fails I would never look at or even trust PC users ever again.

I think the worst part of all of this will be that other developers will look at this release and give it as a example along with "piracy" why they wont touch the PC. :wall:
re: Krater

TBH, I didn't play it extensively. I kind of like the idea of it and the setting was quirky and fun. I didn't love the controls though but maybe that's just my own nitpicky thing.

Flowette posted some more in depth impressions but it was in the old thread and I have no idea what page it was on, sorry.

I do believe I saw I number of comments and impressions from people who played it in the Steam forum for Krater. The opinions seemed pretty mixed to me, but I do know Fatshark is continuing to work on the game so I don't think it should be considered totally finished at this point either.

re: Will Steam run on my laptop

What he said. The Steam client itself should run fine. I've tried it on a couple of laptops an even a crappy notebook computer with an Atom processor and it works fine. It's not the client you have to worry about it's the games themselves and that's going to completely vary since you could be running anything from Commander Keen or Windosill to Rage or Metro 2033.
Omg, Commander Keen, I still have that on floppy disks. I don't have a floppy drive and not sure if they're even readable.

Thought I was the only one that wanted to preorder the South Park Game. Even if I can fight my innerself from ordering it, I still have to contend with the wife because she wants it too. It'll be the first thing we've paid full price on since June 2011 (didn't know of the impending Summer Sale). Damn didn't even let Steam load up at start up because of my misplaced paranoia.

The site says the gifter has 7 days. I had trouble giving away one, because she ignored my emails and steam pm's for 3 days. Then she left a snarky message on my profile why I hadn't tried to contact her blah blah blah. Oh and thanks for the link, downloading now.

Edit, I'm now a CAG veteran. woohoo images in my signature.

Can someone who has Fable III give me a rundown on the extra DRM on the game? I saw it has both SecuROM and G4WL. I was out of PC gaming for years, and only just got back into it, so I have no experience with either. SecuROM seems fairly straight-forward (but annoying), but I'm worried about G4WL. I actually have an unresolved issue right now with my Windows Live ID, so I'm not even sure if I could play the game.

I have a question regarding these Steam giveaways:

Do people buy the codes with intent to give them away? That's incredibly kind.
I have a question regarding these Steam giveaways:

Sometimes. Other times they thought they would play them and didn't, or for a friend who didn't want it, or they are extra from a bundle, etc.

No joke :) I am DLing the update now for Payday :)

And yeah, pleasant surpise they consolidated it into the GOTY edition.

I haven't watched southpark in like 7 years, but I have fond memories of what I used to watch (it started going downhill for me. I think I can count on one hand the games I ever pre-order/paid MSRP on launch for. But once every like 3 years I get the itch to do it. This one looks like it might be fun, but it will likely tank in price soon after like all games.

Also, I own the boxed version of Ghost Master but never played it, always tempted to double dip on steam and actually get to it.
I have a question regarding these Steam giveaways:

I just got into the gifting game. I have been entering for a long long time, but just in the last two weeks I am up to 4 games won! Usually I just gift keys from bundles I won't be using to CAGs who mention they might want said game. I hosted a giveaway for Trains vs. Zombies DLC on a lark. I see myself gifting if I find a good deal and want to return the good karma out there. I've gotten a lot of free games from other CAGs just out of pure kindness so it is a great community to be a part of and giving back I think just feels good :)
I have a question regarding these Steam giveaways:

I can imagine an individual buying something on steam, leave it in inventory. A couple of months later that same game goes on sale, but now its in a bundle. None of his friends wants the game at that point, because they are either non-gamers or already bought the new bundle. So he tosses it to steam gifts so another individual can use it, rather than wasting a cd-key.

Personally, all the games I've hosted I straight out bought (besides Trine 2...thought I wanted it).

Other note, getting close to 200 giveaways I've entered and I haven't won anything yet. I can't believe CheapLikeAFox luck.

If I never played an X game, which game should I get first to try the series out? Or should I just get the Superbox? Thanks for your help!

It does require you to sign in with a Microsoft ID, yes. I suppose you could always make a new one if you are having trouble with your main one. I don't think matters which Microsoft ID it's assigned to it, it just needs to log in with one. Though do be aware that you have to hook the DLC up to a Microsoft ID so whichever one you pick it will be stuck on that one for life.

If you are really concerned I would try a fee GFWL based game first like Age of Empires Online or Microsoft Flight Simulator and see if you can log in okay with those.

The Securom in theory shouldn't give any trouble but there were some people last week reporting the keys apparently ran out and Microsoft need to give more to Valve or some such. I thankfully did not run into that problem but I'm not sure if it got resolved or not for those who did.
I agree with this, however you have to remember its a Japanese dev and most of this interview was probably translated and comes off differently than intended. I have to say I was really shocked at that Eurogamer article and the quotes they posted from that Japanese man. Japanese people usually aren't that blunt and especially for someone who is basically acting in a PR function and presumably wants to sell copies of the game it was really surprising.

Maybe it is translation and/or taking things out of context but it still surpised me. I suppose he just didn't want to get anyone's hopes up.
I really think the main issue and what other developers can learn from this is how picky and maybe even "entitled" PC users can get(Though really I guess you could say it is just most PC users expect a certain bar when it comes to games and more so ports). Okay Sophita I am going to have to 110% disagree with you here. I've seen other people express the 'Oh you're so entitled you PC gamers you! You should be lucky they made it at all' attitude and I think that's ridiculous.

They aren't a charity. They are making a product for profit. Obviously they think they can make money if they are doing it and certainly while a lot of people asked, it doesn't hurt to ask or petition but no one ever forced them to do anything.

I also don't think it's entitled or spoiled to expect a product to be made well and suited to whatever platform is being sold on. Because a product wasn't originally made for a particular platform is not an excuse to do a half assed port. If product can't be made properly to suit its particular platform then maybe it just shouldn't be made at all.

Maybe it will end up being good after all and maybe that article exaggerated a bit or gave the wrong impression. I don't know. But if it ends up being a totally half assed console port with all sorts of GFWL, frame rate and other issues then no, I am not going to feel in any way grateful for it and no one else should either.

If they don't know how to make PC games properly then maybe they should learn, hire someone who can or just not do it.

People aren't abandoning anyone. If you want to sell to a market you need to research and give them what they want. That's economics 101. If you go in blind and wing it and don't try to gauge your market segment and then your product tanks it's your own damned fault. Paying customers don't owe them support. It's our money.

Sorry but this topic just cheeses me off. :bomb:

My understanding is you can get the last x3 expansion and be fine with the game. It includes all the content from the other games but not the story missions. From what I read most prefer mods and sandbox stuff as opposed to the missions.

200? I was at around 900 when I got my first. It was shortly after I joined the Steam groups for all of the sites that I visit. I figured I'd finally increase my chances by entering smaller giveaways. Sure enough, I quickly won a gift. Of course it was a non-group giveaway with 650 entries and just dumb luck.

I'm at similar numbers 200 or so and haven't won. I've been a member a long time but TBH before I joined some smaller groups for their giveaways, it always seem a bit pointless and time consuming.

Damn it, fired up Dead Island to see if there was anything new and don't see the blueprint for the ripper weapon. When I closed it, up popped the Steam update news informing me of the Payday Mercy Hospital level. woohoo  I had a bought a copy of Ghost Master about 8 years ago at half priced books and went ahead and double dipped and purchased it on Steam also. My wife actually shrieked. :D We haven't been able to play it without it crashing since I upgraded to Win Vista and it's kind of a pain in the ass dealing with cd's.

It is no surprise then that From Software having no real experience even making PC games decides to go ahead and take the easy road making a port in the truest sense of the word using GFWL just because it is the same network as the 360 version and not even optimizing the performance other than adding in content.
As long as the performance meets console standards, I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with it. The bosses and vistas are beautiful. There are definitely framerate issues in one specific area (blighttown) which will likely persist but don't really affect anything unless you're looking for something to complain about.

As for content, I can't imagine them changing the gameplay/mechanics whatsoever. To be honest, I can't imagine playing DS without a controller of some sort. The mechanics of combat in the DS games IS the games, in a way... the way you can't use a large weapon in confined spaces without hitting a wall, various combat tactics, etc.

It's a 'console' game, but it's not really like most console games. Very hard to explain. I do hope it works well on PC, just so it gets legions of new fans.

Console-style is fine. I expect that. As long as looks mostly okay I'm fine with it. High res textures would be nice but as long as it's not totally blurry and pixelated I'll live. Anyway maybe someone will figure out how to do a texture replacement mod or something.

Now if it runs like ass on high end machines and has serious frame rate issues or if GFWL is being a real pain in the ass for people and there's no (legal) way to circumvent that then those things I would have a problem with it.

I'm not expecting a game designed for the PC but I am expecting one that runs reasonably well on the PC and isn't a pain in the ass to deal with the DRM.

Man! I'm the complete opposite! I can't handle the games I got. Maybe because I sucker punched myself with Fallout 3/NV and Morrowind/Oblivion. I'm never going to get out of my house.

If you're referencing that terrible Ruins of Myth Drannor game that I actually have a CE of, then I'd agree
Yes, that was what I was referring to.

...but the Gold Box series was one of the best CRPG series of all time (including everything). Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness are genre classics of the first order.
Never played those.
But, good to know, though. :)

But honestly I'd rather someone remade RoMD than play a South Park RPG. I guess lots of hip college kids will buy this, but I don't see a larger target audience.
What dev's would you like to remake ROMD?

If they don't know how to make PC games properly then maybe they should learn, hire someone who can or just not do it.

People aren't abandoning anyone. If you want to sell to a market you need to research and give them what they want. That's economics 101. If you go in blind and wing it and don't try to gauge your market segment and then your product tanks it's your own damned fault. Paying customers don't owe them support. It's our money.

Sorry but this topic just cheeses me off. :bomb:

I am a huge fangirl of From Soft so I am more than likely very, very, very biased into supporting their side. I agree though the main issue is they shouldn't have listened to the petitions and fans knowing they have no experience with PCs. The moment I heard they were making a port I knew this would end badly. Really the best case would have been for them to not port Dark souls at all and instead focus from the start of their next game knowing they want to do a PC release.

Though thinking about who could help them, I honestly can't think of many Japanese developers that have experience with the PC that could help them other than SEGA which may be the best option if they can shift to them as a publisher for their next game. Japan to my knowledge is very much geared towards console style gaming, more than likely why there is very little Japanese games released on PC.

I am just impressed that they are trying, and obviously no one owes them their money. However, I do feel people who constantly ask for Japanese developers to take a chance with the PC should support this effort if only to show other studios and major publishers that there is indeed a market on PC.

I mean if people can support Dear Esther and Bad Rats ;)

To my knowledge, I haven't really been keeping up with it. But that is exactly what the PC is getting a exact same performance and level that the console got but with added content for free. Which is why I said people who are now saying "Only Console level performance!? I'm pirating this now" just because it doesn't offer HD-Resolution ultra textures, allow private servers and networks and doesn't allow three monitor support and modding, are entitled if they are pirating it just because the PC release isn't clearly the best version, in performance and graphics and support.

I blame Kings Field and also the control layout on Armored Core games. =p

Can't find the post, but does anyone remember someone posting something about the developers of Payday and Valve collaborating on something a few months ago? Guess we finally know what "it" was. :)

All kidding aside. It will be areal shame if pc gamers dont try the game out at least. It is very interesting and unlike any other game. It is a perfect mix of modern game design mixed with old school difficulty and reward. If i had to compare it, I would have to say its closest to some really old school CRPGs

It was actually announced a long time ago but not sure how long that their new mission would be a prelude to L4D, etc.

Fable 3 has Securom! DAMMIT HOW DID I MISS THIS. WHY DO I KEEP MISSING THESE THINGS?!

I liked Dark Souls but I have to hide any affection I had for it because I absolutely detest the slobbering fanboys/fangirls it creates across the internet. MOST HARDCORE GAME OF ALL TIME HERALDING A NEW AGE OF GAMING IF YOU DONT BUY IT AND WORSHIP EVERY INCH OF IT YOU ARE THE CANCER KILLING GAMING AND SHOULD STICK TO CALL OF DUTY. That said? That PC port? Gonna be AWFUL. Just stick with the next Gamefly used deal on it. The DLC isn't even guaranteed quality as From is uneven as hell, even midgame. Half the levels and half the bosses in Demon Souls and Dark Souls were just so much worse than the other half.

Still, I enjoyed it for something different but had way more fun in Darkness 2 and Spec Ops The Line. Died a lot more in Spec Ops's last couple of levels than I ever did in Dark Souls. Nuts.

EDIT: And heaven help you if you want to discuss the flaws in either game. The fans will invent all new synonyms of casual to call you and lambast poor helpless Call of Duty for another ten paragraphs in their rage.
Not Steam related, but since when the sale was going on, alot of people were talking about some of the horror adventure games (Scratches, Still Life, etc) during the sale. Well I just saw this on raptr, seems pretty interesting (supposed to be in the style of Amnesia/Penumbra). Figured I'd share it here since its new to me, and I'm sure new to others here who it might interest.

...and yes, video is stupid, it's just the one that was linked on raptr.

Thanks for the link, as far as SteamGifts go, you have 7 days to send it, they have 7 days from receipt to claim it. If they don't mark it as received after 7 days from receipt, then send a ticket to support and either request a reroll (instant new winner determined) or ask for the give away to be marked as received (which is what you would choose if you sent the winner a key, so it wouldn't be redeemed before the new winner could use it).

P.S Also been playing Freedom Force what a amazing strategy game, and I am not even into comics like at all. If someone out there loves RPG's and Real-Time Pause tactics like in Baldurs Gate they should check out well worth the $10 I think the non sale price is for the pack.
:applause: Such a good game. I really need to install it again now that I have it on Steam. I foolishly got rid of my boxed copy years ago. Of course, it'll have to wait for Coconut Queen.
so i played some Kung Fu Strike, its pretty fun and cool lil beat em up title but the levels are very closed in and small but the graphics look nice. If u like kung fu then this is pretty good
You sound kind of lukewarm on it. That means it's a total winter sale target!

It seems to be pretty buggy right now. The store page says you get a 50% off loyalty discount for owners of Dead Island, but the discount isn't showing up for me either and I own only the base game as well.

Speaking of GOTY, since when was Dead Island ever Game of the Year of anything? GOTY really means nothing nowadays.

I think Game of the Year stopped mean Game of the Year a long time ago. It pretty much just means 'With all the DLC and/or expansions'* at this point.

*unless you are Civilization V and then it means with most of the DLC but not Korea or the Wonders of the Ancient World and not the God and Kings Expansion.

Wait, so event he steam version has problems with new windows? I have windows 7? Was thinking about getting it on Steam for simplicity, but if it doesn't work on Windows 7 then no need to.

Edit:

I see GOG has it too so that might be the best place to get it for modern systems?

Wow, this thread is still moving pretty dang fast.

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a relatively inexpensive soundcard that was capable of outputting 5.1 sound over optical or spidf/coax to a surround sound receiver - running windows vista.

I've been looking around and apparently this is a huge problem - wondering if anyone here has come across the issue/found a card that works.

Ya, it is also amazingly hard even on normal. I mean if I wasn't trained to fight, quicksave, fight from Jagged Alliance 2 I have no idea how I would get past some missions. Though I hear Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich fixes this a bit.

For all the Freedom Force stuff. I personally found Vs. the 3rd Reich more enjoyable albeit shorter. Overall the gameplay is the same, but the story better.

Well let's look at an example and we will call this example The Force Unleashed II. When the developers, or whoever is porting it because I can't imagine the true developers would destroy their game to that magnitude (I just... can't... help myself), do absolutely nothing in terms of not making it run just completely awful I can certainly understand why some people are upset. Not only that, but it in fact ran worse than on the console and was what a 40 GB file?

It is troubling to hear them saying they haven't optimized it because when I hear that I think, it will run terribly. Because if they didn't optimize it then they most likely didn't take into consideration the amount of various set ups PC gamers can have. Optimizing for the Xbox 360 is one thing, but optimizing it for PCs is another. We have games optimized for PCs that don't run extremely well on all PCs. Now imagine if they didn't optimize it; would it even run on any? (Example the games that may run like crap on AMD compared to great on NVIDIA).

Plus lets look at the opposite side. What if some PC developer said they were making no changes between the PC to the console port. So say the left joystick controlled and actual on screen mouse in menus (It has been done before and it is awful). Who wouldn't be upset about something like that? Are they upset because they feel entitled or because they think giving people money for doing the bare minimum whilst not asking for the bare minimum in price is absurd.

It boils down to this... why support a company that isn't willing to try. Now with that said we have no idea how well Dark Souls will be. They could say no optimization or no changes, but make it work perfectly fine on the PC. I mean they can't be any lazier than Bethesda who leaves the resizing of menus to modders because taking 5 minutes to do that is apparently far too difficult and costly. Scratch that they could, they could only allow controller support.

Well you have to understand that Game of the Year can be any game that received a Game of the Year award which can be a ton. Any reviewer or journalist can give any game that award and that game can use it. I do question whether or not they count PS3 GOTY and Xbox 360 GOTY and PC GOTY as separate Game of the Years though.

Although I did like when companies used Gold, Platinum, Battlechest, Bundle. And I hate how they love cluttering box art on PS3 Game of the Year boxes. Because it really makes the box art look great with a giant square saying "Over $35 of bonus content".

I'm guessing you are using Mobo Integrated sound. Your motherboard doesn't have coax or optical out? My dad needed an optical out and all his board has was Coax. he had some cheap receiver that only had one optical input and he just had to hook it up.

I got him this http://www.frys.com/product/5748642?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG on sale for 60$ it worked out fine. I don't know what you consider inexpensive tho.

The Steam version runs flawlessly on Win 7 and Win Vista. I don't think I could ever find a patch for it manually.
