CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Just wanted to report back. saint's row 3rd is awesome.
Very much agreed. It's everything I hoped for and more.
This. I know this is a few pages but I'm a bit of an audio/videophile and my PC is actually what I call a HTGPC (Home Theater Gaming PC). I researched this issue a lot a few years ago. The problem is optical and coaxial cables only can carry a 2.0 PCM Signal. When you get 5.1 over those cables you are actually getting an encoded stream of data over the line rather than straight audio. Most game output in LPCM because historically people had analog output on each of their sets of speakers (which some may argue on a high end soundcard may give you better quality than the digital connections). In order to get 5.1 audio you need yo have something encode the linear channels into a single stream. There are a few apps that do it but the one that most people know is Dolby Digital Live like Motoki mentioned. I know the higher end creative cards have this and a few others just make sure it has that if you are looking for 5.1 over optical. The reason you get 5.1 audio off of movies/blu-ray/etc is because they are either pre-encoded with the digital encoding or the app you are using to play has a converter built in.

If you have a choice the best way to get audio on a PC now is over HDMI. this way you can get 7.1 LPCM and it isnt compressed like with DD/DTS and you aren't using processor power to encode it like with DD Live.
Thanks, I had been looking into this a lot over the past few weeks and knew some of that already. But it is good to have such a succinct confirmation. :)
Unfortunately I don't have HDMI on my computer at all - and I am trying to keep costs down for many reasons atm. So I am just looking for a cheap sound card band-aid :)
Really long story short, I just moved in with my GF and now have a small 8x10 man-cave. I didn't have room in here for both analog computer speakers and 5.1 HT speakers. Oh and my receiver doesn't have analog 5.1 inputs so it's either coax or optical.

The one Motoki liked to looks like it would be good for me, but I am reluctant to order it from amazon right now simply because the seller "just launched" and it's a customer return. I know amazon will take care of any problems, but I'd rather not deal with it at the moment. Unfortunately that is the only one I can find in stock right now on the whole damn internet that isn't a ridiculous price. So, I am hoping another shows up on amazon from a different vendor.
I actually have HDMI both out from my PC via the video card (it supports audio out too, in theory) and on the receiver since it's a fairly new model. The problem is I find that the support for HDMI audio out from the NVIDIA drivers and so forth is really flakey, at least in my experience. I run the video out via HMDI and then still just run the audio from optical and that works well for me.

I realize it's encoding and decoding and hence doing some extra work and potentially causing loss of audio quality but I can honestly say I've not noticed any frame rate drops or lesser quality audio at all. It runs fine for me with optical and sounds fine plus I've just had less problems with it.

I'm not saying people shouldn't try out HDMI if they have that option on their various hardware. By all means go ahead and try it out. HDMI and in particular HDMI audio out from a PC is still a fairly recent thing though and I don't think it's always all that well supported yet.

I'll probably try it again down the road the next time I upgrade my hardware. I don't know, maybe it's just a particular flakiness of my current combination of hardware. *shrug*
I'd been out of the PC gaming arena for a bit (last major PC game I played was Age of Conan a little after launch) and am currently just attempting to make do with my current hardware for the most part. I successfully overclocked my Core2 Duo 2.13ghz to 2.8ghz (may go for more soon) and the NVIDIA GTX 275 seems to be doing alright with Saint's Row 3 so it's mainly the surround sound I am missing. I'd come to really like having it on consoles and the lack of it on PC is a bit jarring.

So I purchased Morrowind during the summer sale. Installed game and the graphics overhaul patch. Wow what a world of difference it makes. The 10-year-old game looks fantastic. Unfortunately, my ATI Radeon HD 7000 series graphics card causes a lot of the foliage to flicker... enough to ruin the experience for me. Not sure if it is a drivers thing or a lack of compatibility with Direct X9, but I was really bummed.
SR TT is awesome fun. It's even more fun with friends. We should get a CAG Night together.
Agreed. No one I know has the game currently and I have no plans on putting it down anytime soon.
I've come to the conclusion you have unlimited funds.
No, just a way too high credit limit. :hot:

Anyway, I did get a sort of deal on that receiver from Newegg, but it still wasn't what I would call cheap even with the sale. :whistle2:|
IMO, GFWL is barely noticeable. It automatically starts with the game, and it usually finishes signing in before the load screens are finished. I don't see why it's such a problem.
It's barely noticeable... when it works.

Planescape: Torment and BG series were amazing gems, back in their days. :D
Still are, of course.

If you don't mind fussing with a rebate, Fry's has it for $45 with a $20 rebate.

It's kind of an obscure card these days unfortunately. I think most people just use onboard audio and the few that don't probably just go with stuff from Creative Labs which usually isn't cheap and I'm not sure exactly which of their models support Dolby Digital Live anyhow.
And for those that don't want to read the whole list and just want the real dirt, 38 copies of Coconut Queen. :p
Why the number 38?

Not a sale but, according to the registry, Wanderlust: Rebirth is launching soon on Steam including a 4-pack. It's a retro arcade/action RPG with up to four-player co-op. Trailer below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEtD37QefEI

Should be $10, cheaper in a 4-pack, I'm sure.

You know you're a CAG when you scroll through your game list on Steam and forgot that you bought something...

WORSE when you try to buy said game on sale and you already own it...

WORST when you feel bad that you cannot take advantage of the deal...

You there yet, Motoki? XD I know I am!

And to everyone enjoying SRTT for the first time, I am jealous. That game was a riot!

Did.. did you just find that? Or did you have that linked or something?
I really have been looking... lol. Thanks!

Edit: Bah! $15 or shipping and no store pickup within 100 miles. :/ (not that I would drive 100 miles to get out of paying $15 shipping.. I was just curious). Amazon really has spoiled me with Prime.

MysteryD - yup I keep talking it up.. really enjoying it so far.
I guess it's a fair enough point for the whole multiplayer thing. For me being someone not really interested in multiplayer getting a game I want ported to the PC is like being told someone is going to buy me lunch and then being told it is GFWL is like being handed a shit sandwich.

For me personally I would rather have no multiplayer and no GFWL but I recognize a lot of people would scream bloody murder if they did that.

Probably the ideal situation given the circumstances is to use GFWL as an optional login for multiplayer but not as a DRM per say and not force people to use it if they aren't doing the multiplayer.

Maybe that is even what they are doing because the whole thing about Greenman and Gamersgate listing it as both GFWL and Steamworks sounds very odd to me.

*Edit: So apparently the community manager at Greenmangaming said this:

http://forums.greenmangaming.com/topic/2389/?page=1#post-23604

That does make it sound like the GFWL is optional and just for multiplayer only, in which case I could certainly live with that. I just wish Bandai/From Software themselves were more clear on this point because it does effect buying decisions.
When G4WL is attached, it really isn't optional.
Even if you ain't signed online into G4WL, G4WL is still a damn toolbar on auto-hide and runs along w/ your game.
You hit the home key and it brings it up (or down).

I am semi there. I mean with indie games I have no clue which ones I have and don't have . It's bad enough when every game either has Alien, Zombie or Dead in the title, lol. Now for retail games and bigger releases I think I am good there.
Hm kind of like this sequel to World of Warcraft? :whee:

I present to you for Game of the Year consideration.

So, finished Syberia and now I'll need to get the sequel to finish the damn story. Not the greatest adventure game in the world, but it mostly does the job.
Agreed.
I finished the Main Quest for SR:TT today - and it's AWESOME.

Been playing Darkness 2, since finishing SR:TT.
3 hours into that - and yes, that's good so far, too.
I am still working on it but oh man I am loving it.

It makes it 100x better that I made my character look just like Hitler and gave him a female Russian voice. I sat here for an hour with multiple reference photos to make sure it looked spot on.

But yeah the game is WAYYYY better than I was expecting.

I noticed it on Desura a while back. Seems to be fairly well regarded there. It's got an 8.9 rating.

Of course being on Desura also sort of makes it a candidate for an Indie Royale at some point.

No particular reason. I wasn't really counting how many I gifted until after the sale was over.

I just stumbled on it. And yes shipping does really kill a lot of deals. I've got Amazon Prime too and then got on in the Shopkick free year for Newegg as well. It spoils you.

I can't really find too many other places that have that card at anything close to a reasonable price. Even eBay isn't turning up that much.
I am having major buyer's remorse with Trials II 2nd Edition.
Yeah, I think a friend told me it wasn't as good as Trials HD. Did Trials II come out before the Xbox game? That's how the game looks to me.

Has anyone played the game Trauma? I just finished the flash-based game online, and it left me seriously confused. I usually like games like this and really tried to get into the story, but even though I spent my time soaking it all in and went through most of the alternate endings, I still don't understand the game at all. Does anyone have an explanation of the story? It's an interesting concept, but I don't see why anyone would buy the game on Steam when you can just play it for free on the dev's website. I get that developers should be supported, especially on unique projects like these, but it was just... I can't even explain it it's so weird. I don't want to plain out call it bad, but I'm just as clueless about the storynow as I was before I played the game.

For the price difference, just get any you don't have and then more if anyone else wants em. And fyi, I actually opened A Stroke of Fate, looked really interesting but I was just opening it to get to the main menu to check any settings I could change...and the intro was unskippable and ridiculously long. Don't run the game till you are ready to play!

I passed on that bundle since Wanderlust was the only game I was interested in. I'm glad I did now that it's coming to Steam, would prefer to have it on there. But now I have to wonder when/if it'll come to Indie Royale.

I didn't look real hard into understanding Trauma. It's about a girl wandering back to reality from a car accident and also about her trying to be ready to leave the hospital and return to the world. She revisits ideas from college days, childhood, and explores more metaphysiscal ideas. It's not a straightforward journey but a vision of a conscious struggle with the subconscious. I enjoyed it.
