CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Really?
I noticed it on Desura a while back. Seems to be fairly well regarded there. It's got an 8.9 rating.

Of course being on Desura also sort of makes it a candidate for an Indie Royale at some point.
Thanks for the heads up on this game, Motoki. As a fan of all good co-op games, this looks like something to keep an eye on. I do hope they offer that 4-pack option.

I may end up being an early adopter on this one.

I've got Planescape Torment in my backlog. Picked it up from gog. Gaaa' need more time to play games.

That was impressive.

Not talking about keys.

I'm talking about tradable games that were cheaper in their area during the Summer Sale, in case you're assuming I'm talking about Russians with the key farming.

I've never used Reddit before and I found their trading board through Google, just wondering if there's another board I'm missing.
I finally won in a giveaway! Yay! Now I'm also constantly checking my groups page for new entries! You guys should check yours! Maybe something will be ending soon. Hehe!
Heh, I'm going away for the weekend and figured I might as well dump all my points into give aways. They'll be regenerated by the time I come back and maybe I'll get lucky.

Valve has recently started to crack down on people using cheaper out of region prices to purchase games, including account locks that remove your ability to trade or purchase games. These aren't limited to the seller but can include the buyers as well.

If you're looking for ways to pick games up for cheap, do it on your own at your own risk. Especially when you're reselling here for profits and potentially risking the accounts of others as well.

Valve is cracking down on people using VPNs to fool Steam into thinking the user is from Russia (or wherever), so they can redeem region-locked Steam Keys.

They're not cracking down on Steam tradable titles, as they're "region-free".

A few hundred pages back, someone was saying something about gamers from other regions having lower Steam sales prices - tradable copies. I forget which game, but someone said to check Reddit for more.

Am I crazy? I'm trying to play Batman. It's asking for Windows Live ID and password. I type my Xbox login stuff - email and pass. And it doesn't accept it? I just logged onto Xbox.com using that info. The heck?

I do a lot of trading on Steam and can tell you that they've very recently extended the reach on what they consider unacceptable behavior from friends and contacts who have had their accounts locked.

Does you password contain any special characters? IIRC Xbox logins accept these but the Windows Live side does not for some inane reason.
Amazon has run a couple sales this year with DA:O Ultimate + DA2 bundled for $10. Another such sale may yet come along.
Yeah, this didn't activate on Steam though. I'd been waiting for DA:O to go -75% for ages (har). It didn't drop below 50% last winter or last summer, IIRC. I almost gave up hope this year. Glad I finally picked it up.

Sure, trade you for a floorplan + security codes to Fort Knox.

I don't see how it would or could pertain to Steam tradable copies. Valve's issue was people using VPNs / Proxies to fool Steam into thinking they were from Russia and redeeming out-of-region keys. You can't redeem a key into a tradable copy.

I had the same problem with another GFWL title.

You have to delete some type of folder or file tucked away in the GFWL folders on your computer.

I've you've played a GFWL title in the past and changed your password somewhere between then and now, then you gotta delete the folder or file.

You'll have to Google the problem and do some detective work - I don't remember what it was. Took me a few minutes to find online.

I was wondering how everyone feels about Darksiders?

I played it for a good while, in fact I'm on the last dungeon, but I just have no interest in beating it. I had a blast the first half of the game, but second half got progressively less and less rewarding. I hate getting to the very end of a game and not beating it, but I feel like I'm 2 hours away, at least, and I just lost all interest in it. Surprised I even got this far. Its just repetitive.

That being said, I can't wait for Darksiders 2. Darksiders shows that the game is solid (nothing amazing), but it has huge potential with a good sequel. Like Assassin's Creed, the first one was solid, second game was amazing.

Any thoughts on whether Darksiders is worth finishing?

If you think Valve can't track every trade/gift and find trends of users who are consistently sending from low price regions to high price regions, well, it's your account.
You've got to be friggin kidding. :wall:
I wish I was. Read about someone having the exact same issue as you on another forum and they found this to be the issue.

Edit: His fix involved resetting his password, so it may be the out of sync password issue mentioned above as well. No mention on his end if there were any password changes in between.

Double edit: After being unable to find the original thread and checking Google, these are both known, legitimate issues. Another reason we all should hate GFWL.

Why do you keep arguing this? Go to reddit or Google search or whatever.

The trading system is meant to be able to trade or gift a game here or there with friends. It is very clearly not meant for people to mass buy up keys and then sell them at a discount to intentionally circumvent regional pricing.
You've got to be friggin kidding. :wall:
A lot of places have issues with passwords, it's pretty damned ridiculous. I've had to choose short passwords and passwords without numbers/symbols/etc on a multitude of occasions. It's worse when you signup and you can put in special characters or a certain amount of characters, but then when you try to sign in for the first time those special characters aren't recognized or they put a limit on the amount of characters you can enter in the password box. I have a strong amount of ire for databases/websites/programs that do this because I have to deal with hundreds of passwords regularly.

Wow. Did you even read my posts? #-o

If it is a Steam tradable copy, that means it was purchased directly from the Steam store. In other words: Not a region-locked Steam key.

I made it very clear that I wasn't talking about KEYS numerous times.

Sorry if it offends you that I heard about a game IN THE STEAM STORE being cheaper in another region and wanted to look into it. Please forgive me!

Haha, I felt the same way. Darksiders started off with a lot of promise, but I got really bored of it by the end. Either way, I do think it's worth finishing, as I enjoyed the ending (don't expect some crazy revelation or anything, but it was a neat moment in a comic-book sorta way). I figure since I already invested so many hours into it, I might as well finish it, as I think it may tie into the 2nd game (not sure since the sequel supposedly exists concurrently with the first).

I think I just got annoyed of the game during the times where I had to pick up angel cannons and perform some faux-third person shooting with wonky controls. So frustrating
Double edit: After being unable to find the original thread and checking Google, these are both known, legitimate issues. Another reason we all should hate GFWL.
I changed my password to something altogether different than my original and no longer have special characters. GFWL took it. It's just ridiculous I had to go through all this. Talk about a crappy first impression of GFWL. No wonder I read you folks bad-mouthing it all the time. I've sure joined that party.

I guess what bugs me more about this situation is that we're talking about systems that should be complimentary -- GFWL and Xbox Live.

I had a good time with Darksiders. I thought it showed tons of potential and was a very good sleeper hit that year. It is still a game I will recommend to most of my gamer friends (especially those that are keen on Zelda and God of War type games). However, the game did have its flaws. It has seemingly no replay value and I remember thinking that the game could be so much more than it actually was. With that being said, I would highly recommend it to most people because I really want Darksiders II to do well. Some of my favorite games of the last few years have been published by THQ (Saints Row: The Third, Red Faction: Guerrilla) and I would like for them to continue making games of this caliber.

But to answer your question on whether or not it is worth finishing, I'm not sure I can. Like most games of this generation, I remember the last hour or two of the game being a little underwhelming. It was a lot more of the "go here. Fight this guy. Go there. Final Boss" ending that had little reward in the end. I would even venture to say that the final boss wasn't even that difficult of a boss and that some of the earlier bosses were a little more difficult (just finished my second playthrough of Batman: Arkham Asylum last night and this statement also rings true). In fact, I'm even struggling to remember the final boss. However, I do think it is worth finishing. At the very least, it sets up the story for a sequel during the final cinematic. But, if you're done with the game, I would just YouTube that cinematic.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: For those that are interested in the game, GreenManGaming has it on sale for $4.98 right now and it is Steam game. For anyone on the fence, the game is really worth it for that price.

Yeah, agreed. GFWL and Xbox Live really should work together seamlessly. I mean, it's basic common sense...

That stuff has pissed me off before, too. I had a similar issue with my password a while ago. Glad you figured it out though.

And you don't think the person selling it to you bought other copies of the same game? I kind of doubt those Russians have just one key they are sitting around waiting to sell. Maybe some are but most are probably buying multiples to sell.

It wouldn't surprise me if Valve has a way to check for suspicious behavior, ie someone in Russia is buying up 50 copies of Arma II or Skyrim in a short time period etc.

Because someone is selling one copy to you doesn't mean they aren't selling 100 other ones to other people.

Anyway bottom line is if you were supposed to get that price legitimately in your region it would be available to you at that price.

Do people get away with this sort of thing all the time? Yes? Have I heard of people getting caught from doing it? Yes. Even region free.

If some guy in Russia is buying up a bulk quantity of copies of hot selling games and then selling them off, even if it's region free, they're not supposed to be circumventing the regional pricing like that on that sort of scale and they might get caught which means Valve might come back to the people who bought from them too.

Even if it's a small chance it's not worth it to me to potentially lose access to the rest of my collection or at minimum just have money on a deal wasted.

As far as I am concerned this sort of thing is a grey area and I'd really rather this sort of thing be taken to the shadier corners of the internet like Reddit. :p

I played a lot of it when I got it from that 5 dollars daily deal some months ago, I was pretty close to the end (I stopped sometime after Eden), but I can't get myself to finish it. I have a problem with the backtracking to collect the items, I find it way too confusing and I spend too much time trying to find them so I just gave up. I do think it's a good game though, and a bargain at 5 dollars (or 4 with the GMG coupon).

At $3.99, it does sound tempting. Even at the sub-$5 price, however, I still find myself a bit unenthusiastic about the title.

Perhaps if the sequel proves to be a well-executed experience, then I'll go back and grab this game. (At the very least, the original Darksiders will hit $5 sometime in the future.)

1C and Meridian4 have been dumping their games into Gala and Groupees bundles for a while now. Oh, and StrategyFirst, too. I guess it must be making them some serious money, but it makes for pretty boring bundles.

It's called arbitrage, nothing really wrong about it, but I'd bet somewhere in the steam ToS it probably forbids it.
