CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Wow I tried to do that giveaway but keys literally were gone in under 10 seconds. Weird thing Is game doesn't even look fun...Damn my CAG OCD

Yea I was way too slow, 3 times I got chance to enter name...but always redeemed. Grrr...oh well, its good for the developer to host something like this. It spreads publicity plus good will.

People he is giving these away via Humble's site. It will be in one of their bundles sooner or later along with 6 other games for a $1 minimum so you know you will be getting it.

More games have released under the HiB store that is still in beta. He was talking about pricing in that thread and I doubt he'll throw it into a bundle until he completes the additional online and level editor component he was mentioning.

“Even if I was like rich, free’s always good.” - Denny's Waitress (Breaking Bad). Plus I think it was just the general excitement, rush of winning something regardless of value. Yea, wouldn't have noticed this game otherwise and definitely considering of picking this one up down the line.

Well I didn't say it would be in a bundle tomorrow, but really are there any of us here who are running out of games to play? :p

I mean if you can get it without driving yourself nuts then go for it, but if not I wouldn't worry too much.
I got 1 Awesomenauts copy for $6.70 paypal must be sent as a gift. PM me if interested
Is that one PvP only? Or is it some sort of cooperative versus NPCs?

I just keep reminding myself that the Humble Bundle it eventually ends up in will be a crappier deal for me if I do get this game for free now. And I will still buy it anyway but grumble all the way that there were some games I owned in it and I can't separate and gift them out so it's a waste.

It can be included in HB as single game BTA average, like Bastion, or S&S HD and with the latest tendency it would be ~$7-8, a lot crappier deal than getting it for free.

re: Barkley Gaiden JRPG Jam or whatever

I keep meaning to play that game. It's way too weird not to.

Oh and I don't see Virus as a BTA game but if it does I'll get it on a Steam sale for 75% off someday if I remember. :p
Didn't know but Awesomenauts is already out. And instead of a four pack it's a three pack for possible 33% savings. Definitely a great game, since I played it on PS3. I'm really tempted.
The newest patch that hit a few days ago really ruined the game IMO.

Barkley Gaiden is much more entertaining than it has any right to be and I detest JRPGs. Still, the humor is all reference so if you have no taste for that sort of humor it will not hook you.

I love Noitu Love 2 and I will say it over and over. The developer loves a good boss fight which puts him as a man after my own heart. That said, it's weird. You click enemies to zoom toward them and pound them, but usually you need to make a quick dodge away to avoid counters, which is a double tap at your WSAD hand. It suffers from the all too common action platformer gripe that normal enemies are easier to just run around/away from to get ahead in the level than it is to actually sit and fight them. Still, I am a huge fan of this one.

The save system is schizophrenic though. I forgot how wonky it is. Remember you only get to continue if you SAVE AND QUIT after a level.

Also, not to dredge this nonsense up, but I just cannot believe people take my mindless kneejerk hatred of indie games too seriously. I find the schtick endlessly hilarious because of how absurd it is on its face. I mean, come on, INDIE games? There are maybe characteristics of them you can hate but just because indie?

Just imagine this scene for a second. A new humble bundle hits. I am sitting back at my computer, feet on the desk, smoking a cigar. I key in "$0.01", slide the sliders up to 100% Humble Tip. Taking a puff of my cigar, I pull it out, staring at the computer with a wry sneer. "Here's a humble tip for ya, kid," I call out, condescension dripping from my voice, "Make real games next time. Not indie crap." With a deep, throaty laugh, I slam my hand on the enter key, completing the purchase. Then I get up, walking away, not even playing the games, a smugly satisfied grin on my face.

I mean, that's how I think I come across, and it's hilarious and stupid all at once. I cannot fathom people taking me that seriously.

Secret Director's Cut Ending: As I leave, I turn back to the screen. The camera zooms in. "Humble Indie Bundle 14!" Panning down, past "Beat the average bonus: Retro Pixel Indie Platformer 9!" The camera settles on the dollar revenues from the sale. "$14,220,095..." Second pass, it ticks over to "$15,119,044." I snarl, shaking my fist at the ceiling, "DAMN YOU INDIE GAAAAAAMES!"

I love it to be honest with you.

I enjoy a nice "Indie Game" fro time to time myself, however there is one thing that puzzles me. If there truly was such a major desire for these games as some of the people out there would have you believe, then why are they stuck in the "Indie" genre and not considered a mainstream type of game?

No, I am not hating on Indie games here, just posing some food for thought.

Quick Question... as i mentioned before im still new to pc gaming and i dont have much games in my steam account and im debating on buying 2 indie bundles from steam.. out of the 11 indie bundle, what #s would you guys recommend i should definitely get? thanks!

Same reason Kickstarters work. Same reason EA had an EA Indie Bundle. Same reason Limbo received boatloads of filthy Microsoft lucre and support to headline their big XBLA push. Same reason the Humble Indie Bundle makes boatloads of money. It's a brand, a style. People want to buy "indie games" in a bigger way than they want to buy the actual games themselves.

This is also the same reason I think a lot of good indie games go under the radar, they don't fit that indie framing. They aren't indie enough. Were I a smarter person and I could write more good, I could describe that phenomenon in a more succinct, sexy way...

The one with Ys: Oath in Felghana in it. Probably also the one with Aaaaaaah! For The Awesome in it because that's good fun.

That said, buying bundles for single games is the height of stupidity so don't listen to me.

EDIT: Actually DO listen to me. Unless you see yourself playing these games real soon, this is NOT the be all-end all of indie bundles. Indie games get bundled, marked down, and marketed hard ALL THE TIME. If you want to shop around, you probably could do better than these bundles.

That said, looking again, Aaaah's bundle is actually a collection of good games and Trauma. Four good games and one crappy one isn't a bad investment for $10.

Shhhh! Stop pulling the curtain back! I like imagining an angry indie hating cartoon character.

Oh and none of us play those damned games. we just donate more.

My picks:

1) Includes 5 items: Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Cave Story+, EDGE, Lone Survivor, The Baconing
4) Includes 5 items: A Valley Without Wind, Atom Zombie Smasher, Blocks That Matter, Sanctum, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
9) Includes 5 items: Capsized, Jamestown, Revenge of the Titans, VVVVVV, Zeno Clash

Number 9 is a necessity if you don't own any of those games.

I can second recommendations of Jamestown, VVVVVV, Zeno Clash, Lone Survivor, and Blocks That Matter, but you're going to have to do a lot to convince me what value the other non-BTM games in Indie Bundle 4 are.

That said, Jamestown, VVVVVV, Zeno Clash, and Lone Survivor are all pay what you want indie bundle veterans so $10 is actually a lot to pick up these.

Cave Story is great but the original is freeware and Cave Story+ categorically does NOT add anything that really justifies the price. It's practically a mod of the original. If you're feeling generous, go for it. If you're feeling stingy, just get the original.

I will also recommend the Indie Bundle V with Ys and Gemini Rue in it. Audio surf is not too bad either if you just want something to sort of chill out to. Greed Corp is an okay little strategy game. Haven't played Tiny Bang yet but I own and it and need to get around to it one day.

Oh and The XSeed rep had this to say about Ys being in an Indie Bundle

Also, for the record, Ys' inclusion in the indie bundle was Valve's suggestion. And we're not arguing because, y'know, great exposure and great sales! If Falcom getting the "indie" label applied to them is the tradeoff for introducing tons of new people to a great game series... then call them indie, I say!

I was lucky enough to get a key for A Virus Named Tom, and I've installed it and played a few minutes of it (enough to gold all 4 levels of the first stage.)

Thoughts:

An interesting game. Probably one not necessarily suited for my tastes - I prefer the more cerebral puzzlers, and this one is definitely more of a "twitch" puzzler. You have a time limit that is counting down, and there are potentially enemies that are out to get you. This makes for a hectic puzzler, trying to figure out how to move the pieces while avoiding the enemies and getting the "best" time.

The pieces are (at least as far as I saw) only rotatable, but you can rotate in either direction. However, I'm not a huge fan of the rotation method. To rotate a piece, you have to move along two edges of it, and then it'll rotate in the direction you're moving. It makes for what feels like unnecessary movement, and makes it harder to conceptually line up moves, as you can't just move straight to turn a bunch of pieces. It's hard to explain, but once you play, you'll see what I mean almost immediately, I think.

Given that the game seems to be "solve the puzzle in X amount of time for gold/silver/bronze", what ends up happening is I play a stage once to figure out how it needs to be configured, play it again to get the movement down, and then play it a third or fourth time to get the time I need to get gold. It becomes (at least in these early stages) more of a repetition/memory type game than anything else, yet because of the enemies and the time, it's possible to keep missing the time mark for gold by mere seconds, causing you to have to replay it again and again. If you're semi-OCD about getting gold on these types of games (like I am, one of the reasons I generally avoid them), I can see it becoming very frustrating and not very much fun - one of the reasons I prefer games that are based on # of moves used, or something similar. (See: Everyday Genius: SquareLogic, for a great example of a game that I can play for hours.)

However, the story is amusing enough, the music is good, and it's defintely unlike any other puzzler I've seen. If it focused more on actual puzzle solving, and less on solving the puzzle in X time, I'd be happier with it. At $10 it seems a bit over priced , but not by much for a new release. I personally wouldn't have been happy to have picked it up at even the $7.50, but for $5 or less, if you think you'll enjoy the fast paced, beat-the-best-time puzzling, it'd probably be worth your monies.

I just had a very cool chat with the Head Mod at SteamGifts. I post it below for your consideration. Many of you are aware of my troubles with the site in the past few days, and the site was being discussed in detail even before that in this thread. CQ is an awesome guy. I had never met him before last night, but I agree with the sentiment spoken about him before that he is a very level headed and even tempered person. I have high hopes for the site, especially since it looks like after reading my support ticket, instead of simply penalizing the mods responsible, it seems he'll be removing them outright. That's alot or pressure and added responsibility on CQ, and so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas they wanted me to relay in my next chat with him.

Never tell your password to anyone.
cg: hey
walkonshadows: yes Sir?
cg: how's your day going?
walkonshadows: ok so far, are you about to screw it up with bad news? lol
cg: why would I have bad news?
walkonshadows: because that's usually the question people ask me before they give bad news.
cg: I thought it was 'are you sitting down?'
walkonshadows: that's for really bad news.
cg: Updated your username on steamgifts
walkonshadows: I saw that, but couldn't say thanks cause the topic was closed. but Thanks You.
cg: As for the other ticket, completely agree, the mods are a little aggressive.
cg: Partly my fault, because they are trying to manage a couple hundred thousand people, but at the same time, there's really no reason for some of those comments.
walkonshadows: But they lifted the bans (all 3 of them) early, so I can't say much. Just thought someone should see it. No hard feelings.
walkonshadows: and thankyou for looking at it to begin with, it's obvious you are busy as hell with that site.
cg: It's definitely a challenge.
cg: I think I'll be removing the moderators, and try to handle it myself until they have more tools at their disposal.
cg: Right now they get frustrated, because they have thousands and thousands of support tickets telling them to do this, and
that, while they have limited powers on the site. People point fingers, accuse them of not caring, and they lose their temper.
walkonshadows: how are you going to handle that much more load on your shoulders then?
cg: I'll try to spend another few hours a day handling support tickets.
walkonshadows: the site's only getting bigger by the day, the more automated you make it, the easier.
cg: I try to automate as much as possible.
cg: Removing giveaways, rerolling giveaways, etc, can't really be automated
cg: Allowing users to remove their own giveaways causes some problems. We'd need to setup a limit on the number they can delete, and even then, the entire delete system would need to be recoded first.
cg: There's the issue of points being distributed when giveaways are created, and then if a user spends those points and the
giveaway is removed, what happens? We send that user into the negative points? Also, people trolling, 'hey, I'm giving away
valve complete pack', and then right before it ends, they remove it.
cg: With rerolling giveaways, we can't have users constantly rerolling their winners on their won. We get the issue of 'hey, I
won that giveaway fair and square, why was it given to someone else?'
cg: *on their own
walkonshadows: couldn't checking the accounts for whether the winner posted the game to his account be automated? That would cut down on some tickets, the ones that claim winner never recieved, and you could prevent people regifting by locking out
being able to put up (relisting) a game won for 3 months or so. I had the thought that the point system should be based off of what you put up to giveaway, but I see problems with that as well.
cg: A number of games don't appear on Steam accounts, mostly DLCs. For those, we really have no way to verify if it was
redeemed. Unless of course we add them as a friend, go through the checkout process of sending them that DLC, and see if Steam
gives an error saying they already own it.
walkonshadows: This has actually been a deep discussion on CheapAssGamer since the new rules on bundle keys, would you mind if I poll them to see if anyone has better ideas, get back toy you?
walkonshadows: completley cutting out mods is going to be quite the undertaking.
cg: I follow most of the cag threads
cg: Signed up the other day, waiting for posting permissions
cg: I try to keep up with all the topics on cag, gog, reddit, giantbomb, etc
cg: Usually just lurk, and keep an eye out for suggestions and what people like/dislike
walkonshadows: I will say that after my first Steam Summer Sale, I ended up with pretty much everything I wanted, so I started
contributing more that entering giveaways. I hope the contributor system does go away, it encourages people to create more of the reason people go to the site to begin with. At the same time, there will always be people trying to take advantage and exploit.
walkonshadows: oops, meant to say "does not go away"
cg: Yep, I think we'll keep it around
cg: We'll see how the new update works out
walkonshadows: I wish you luck. Dinner's here. It's been a pleasure cq.
cg: Thanks for the feedback, enjoy your dinner
walkonshadows: chicken strip basket from DQ, no worries.
walkonshadows: :)
cg: haha, see ya
You know, I recall being interested in this game long before it made it to Steam. I had heard of it because I tried one of the creator's other works, Legend of Princess, which had major performance issues. Noitu Love 2 always struck me in an Alien Hominid kind of way, but I never ended up buying it straight from the creator. Perhaps, with the game being on Steam and offered for such a low price, it might be worth it.

So, CAG's, what do you guys have to say about the game?
Ah, I didn't know Noitu Love was by the Legend of Princess guy. I had no problem running it on a PC I bought in... 2001.

Noitu Love 2 is fun. It's like Gunstar Heroes. Seems like it would play better with a gamepad.
Pretty much, it reminds me a lot of 4chan.
Because Indie isn't a genre... It has absolutely nothing to do with the type of game being made, but more so with the people who make it and how it is funded. You can tell that they are popular based on the amount being released. If there wasn't the demand, or interest, for them then there wouldn't be nearly as many as we have now.

I feel like this question is similar to this, "Why aren't cult classics popular blockbuster films?". In case anyone was wondering this question was asked by a radio station and I did indeed face palm when they asked it.

There just seems to be a big misunderstanding of the term to be honest.

I have been lurking for the past week, but not really saying anything because I have nothing intellectual to add to the conversations heh.
This isn't about Steam so sorry if it's a little off topic, but it's about computers, and since I'm not very tech savvy, I thought someone could help. My cousin is looking for a new laptop. She doesn't play many video games on PC, but she's on it a lot for browsing the internet and LOVES to play Sims 3 (obsessed even). How would this laptop http://www.staples.com/Lenovo-Ideap...gId=-1&storeId=10001&ddkey=http:StaplesSearch handle Sims 3? Could it handle it on at least medium settings? Thanks.

Definitely an interesting read. I have more respect for the guy. I could never handle a site of that size, building it or maintaining it. I don't have patience for people something the size of that place would cause me to drink heavily or go insane. Possibly both.

thanks guys.. i was eyeing Indie #1 for lone survivor, cavestory and anomaly only and since all are steam+play but after mentioning about the freeware on cave story, i guess im passing on that now! i guess my buying #9 then! hehe!

Well Sims 3 is hardly the most taxing game out there so it may still be okay but I would personally avoid any PC where the specs indicate 'integrated graphics' (this one has "Intel Integrated HD 3000 Graphics"). Those aren't really meant for gaming. You need a separate video card for gaming ideally.

I hate to do this, because I know you mean well, but that's really a question for the PC Games & General Discussion forum. There are more than a few hardware threads already open there, both stickied, and in the main forum. In fact, I believe the current top thread is requesting help on a laptop. Might not be quite the same specs you're looking for, but I doubt they'd mind you giving them a bump while asking for your own advice in there.

However,
while I'm here and on the topic, I'm not sure it could handle Sims 3 (I have NO experience with that game or it's requirements) but if she wants to play any video games, I'd highly recommend a dedicated video card. I have an Acer 4830TG, and I've yet to find a game I can throw at it that it can't handle, including SR3 @ DX9, Deus Ex: HR at pretty good graphics, and Dawn of War II at Medium. But like I said, I have NO clue what Sims 3 needs, so it might be fine with an integrated graphics card.

300 baud rocking CompuServe, Q-Link, BIX, GEnie, and lots of BBS.

I'm apparently the grandfather of the group.
14.4 sheesh, I was rocking a 2400 baud until i talked my parents into a 28.8
I see, I'll probably look for some other deals, then. Thanks for the help!

And sorry about that, I didn't know there was a PC forum. I'll definitely post there next time.

Someone mentioned controller support for Noitu Love 2, was that a wish, or does it have controller support? It doesn't look like something easily handled by Xpadder.

I want to mention that, while I did not agree with the "updated" soundtrack, Cave Story+ does benefit from the upgraded 60 FPS. (Plus, the soundtrack can be reverted to the amazing originals.)

One thing worth noting is that Balrog says his signature "HUZZAH!" in the unofficial translation, but, in Cave Story+, he's stuck with the underwhelming "Oh Yeah!" (Considering that his original phrase was basically an exaggerated war cry, I believe the Cave Story+ translator just simply wanted to choose something that wasn't "Huzzah.") This is only a compelling point if you were a fan of the unofficial translation, I suppose, but Cave Story loyalists like to reference that line over any other.

I was going to argue for Cave Story+, but, really, I think the freeware version's more than enough. Not an amazing framerate or resolution compared to the Steam version, but at least it has all the essentials.

You know,i hadn't chimed in yet partly because all my dealings with CG from steam gifts gave been 100 percent professional and pleasant. Hes gone out of the way to help out with the dlc giveaways. Makes sense now. The mods are probably unpaid users with no intetest in the site as a business. Doesnt excuse the way they act, but does explain it.

As others have mentioned, Sims 3 will probably not run well with those specs. While Sims 3 is not taxing, GPU is very important and you will eventually experience slowdowns running under a system with minimum specs.

On a similar topic, I really hate EA and how they won't put out a 75% sale and/or GOTY edition for the Sims 3. Great game but expensive expecially if you buy all expansions and DLC.

As much as I would like controller support (which would be awesome) the game is really mouse dependent for the core game mechanics (aiming, shielding, attacking).

The 3000HD isn't very good. In short, yes, it can play Sims 3 at medium.

Look into AMD laptops if you're getting an integrated graphics card. Bought my GF an A10-4660M with an integrated HD7660G for $600, and it can play Sims 3 on the highest settings.

Take it to an appropriate thread for any more response from me.

A wish.

It's designed for KB&M, does not have native gamepad support, and the mouse controls probably wouldn't work well with an overlay.

It's just the sort of game that would play well with gamepad support, if it had it.

Considering they haven't even put the last two stuff packs out on Steam and are mum about whether the upcoming expansion will be released there I'm not getting my hopes up for much regarding the Sims and Steam these days.
