CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Out of curiosity, have you beaten Sonic Generations?
Nope never been big into sonic games.

But just the sudden shift from here's 5 guys to OH MY GOD your entire screen is filled and your dead in 10 seconds if you try and fight so you have to kite the mobs and run all the way back to the friendly dwarf camp and let them fight while you hide, only to realize they infinitely re spawn until you can push past them and destroy the portals..only problem is to push past them is literally gaining a inch, a hour as you kill them take a few steps more show up and repeat. :wall: like I said it is the moment you can really tell Drakensang:The Dark Eye was made in Europe not to mention the lack of any difficulty option or any cheat code that doesn't even finding a "Trainer program" there is just no way to scale back the fight or try and make it easier other than youtube the 10 second ending >.
I'm just gonna say this about Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition...
I got over 113 hours sunk into that game, according to Steam.

I think that gives you an idea of what I think about FO:NV - Ultimate...
Hours played doesn't necessarily mean hours enjoyed. I have 150+ hours in Oblivion, but I still would not rate the game very highly.
oh, i should probably add about hack/slash/loot... a far superior game, in my opinion, that successfully accomplishes short mission based dungeon crawling, with randomized maps, distinctly different dungeons, and distinctly different classes is Desktop Dungeons.

Desktop Dungeons is absolutely amazing, and each class requires distinctly different gameplay, etc. Highly recommended. The first version is free, but they've spent a ton of time making an extremely polished pay version (pre-ordering buys you into the closed beta).

Probably my favorite new entry into the rogue-like genre in years.
http://www.desktopdungeons.net/

you can download an really early version for free, and it's awesome... but the beta version, and eventual release, has a ton more content. balancing, bug fixes, massively improved visuals, far more dungeons, puzzle levels, more classes, spells, and a 'meta' game overtop everything.

it's a very different take on rogue-likes... almost like speed-rogue. But once you get used to it, and start trying to beat every level with every class, and unlocking new elements, you realize it's far far deeper than it appears.

play the free version, and then you'll be happy to support/pre-order.

I've spent 13 hours in Hack/Slash/Loot. It's much more enjoyable after you unlock the Amazon character class, who starts with a Holy Damage bow that gains health or stats every hit at the start.

Is it worth $3.49 though? I wouldn't pay that much for it.
Hours played doesn't necessarily mean hours enjoyed. I have 150+ hours in Oblivion, but I still would not rate the game very highly.
If you spend that long with something you don't enjoy, that honestly sounds like a you problem.

Gotcha - thanks Jester.

I'm trying to find a solution so I can quickly switch from playing my games on my laptop and my desktop. Those games that have Steam Cloud, of course, work great.

It's the others that aren't as easy to deal with.

I don't mind actually installing the game on both machines, it's just the save game aspects...

Would steammover make that easy?

Thanks
Let me clarify - I think I also confused myself on the above post.
I use SteamMover a couple of ways.

I have a NAS\media server that is wired to internet and it has Steam installed. I use it to download the games in order to store the games. I do not play the games from here. Instead, I use SteamMover to move what games I want to play to my laptops secondary hard drive (1TB) that I mention below.

I use my gaming laptop for playing the games. It has a 120GB SSD and a 1TB mechanical hard drive in place of the CD/DVD caddy as my secondary drive. Steam is installed on my SSD and I use SteamMover to symbolic/junction link the individual game folders in my C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common to the D:\Games\Steam on my 1TB hard drive on my laptop. Most of my games are played from the mechanical 1TB hard drive. Some games have extremely long load times so I select those games individually and move the games to the SSD to be run from there. This was really helpful for games like Dirt3, Fallout 3, Crusader Kings II, etc.

SteamMover is a great tool and it is really easy to use/learn. It makes it easy for me to organize the 500+ games I have on Steam and I don't have to keep re-downloading games when I want to play one. I download it once and move the data to the appropriate area.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask me any other questions you might have!

I didnt really feel like using a 3rd party tool to move my steam games from my SSD to a larger drive. I just create symlinks and run most games that way. All the drive I/O intensive games are on my SSD, unless I have taken a break from them. Then i just move them and create symlink (The Witcher, i'm looking at you).
I agree with this if you are talking about a smaller collection. My thing is I would rather code a tool or use someone else's tool that does it in mass for a large collection due to speed and I am too lazy to manually create the links for each individual game. Not to mention, most people probably don't know the difference between symlink/hard links/junction/etc. nor do they want to learn. At this risk of insulting myself - SteamMover is just a quick tool for dummies so to speak. You click a couple times and that is it.
I still prefer doing it manually or using explorer extensions. But conceptually, Hard Links/Junctions are the best thing ever for maintaining a good HDD.
Totally agree - SteamMover is just fast and nasty and user friendly.
I wish less people would use steam mover and just get Link Shell Extension if they want ease and simplicity. With Link Shell Extension, everything is drop and drop as if you are making shortcuts and it adds overlay icons to show all the different forms of linking.
Very nice - Link Shell Extension looks like a really nice tool moving forward. Question: Will LSE move the data to the appropriate point as you drop your links? This is what I like about SteamMover - it moves the data at the same time of creating the link. Hopefully LSE does something similiar.
Interesting, I've never had a problem with it, then again I've never restored a backup from one. I've always made them and then just create ISOs of the backed up files to store and use a virtual drive if I ever need to restore. I only started doing this because of how pissed I was that some HL2 content wasn't present on disc. Guess I'll avoid making them for every game like I've been doing each time I uninstall/complete one (which is almost never )
Go try restore a couple and get back to me. The only backups that occasionally restored correctly were some that were not split between folders in any way. It seems like no matter what you do, Steam will split the larger games into folders. I tried to force the larger games into a single backup folder and those would not restore either. I would be happy to hear they fixed this due to the need of compression.
This is exactly what I've said and have been saying. People need to stop using stuff like steam mover and do the links themselves.
Like I said - not everyone wants to learns how to do things like this on the computer. Not to mention that I work in IT and just get tired of doing things over and over again. I really enjoy creating batch/scripts/tools/etc. that I code one time and just click and go. It's even better when you find a tool that someone else created and now you don't have to wast time creating yourself (LSE/SteamMover/etc.)
all this talk about folders and directories reminded me of how much i hate that theres no standard folder to contain game saves. I hate that every game decides to put its stupid saves in a different directory. my documents folder is filled with publisher/developer name folders. sometimes the saves are stored in the system32 folder. sometimes theyre in the actual game folder. I wouldnt mind if all games had cloud save support, but they dont. I dont see why its so hard for devs to just acknowledge a single folder as the place to store all saves. My Documents/My Games/"enter publisher name here"
Totally agree! After learning about Link Shell Extension from EarthBoundX5, I'm thinking seriously of combining all my save files into one central folder and using LSE to link where needed for the games. Make the central DropBox or something similar and now you have a poor boys cloud save for all your games and they are always baked up.

I was not aware that you were speaking of game saves primarily. SteamMover would not be a good fit for this because it is locked to master and alternate folder so to speak. As mentioned earlier, save game folders are not all contained in one folder. They can be in random places. Link Shell Extension sounds like a better fit to me. Create a folder on Dropbox to house all your game save folders and use LSE to create the correct links to the folder on Dropbox for both your laptop and desktop. Now you have cloud save and all your game saves are backed up!

Makes me wonder if in-store price will be the same. I know literally nothing about Impulse from GameStop, so anyone care to comment on this thought?

Fallout New Vegas activates on Steam so you shouldn't have to deal with the client.

Not sure if this is what you are asking, but here is the basic idea of how to use LSE. Move the file/folder you want somewhere else, then right-click drag the file/folder back where it was (as if making a shortcut) and just use the LSE menu to set up whatever type of link you want (in the case of a folder for steam, use a junction). I can explain if I worded that strangely. Basically LSE is just a shell menu for mklink commands (whereas Steam Mover is a GUI of that tailored to ONLY junctions to my understanding).
Go try restore a couple and get back to me. The only backups that occasionally restored correctly were some that were not split between folders in any way. ...have you used it recently? The backup routine lets you select size of backup "folders" (which represent each separate disc/iso). You cannot just manually put them in a single folder, as you have to think about it like I said in my (); you wouldn't just take RAGE for example and copy all the files off the 3 discs into a single disc/folder and expect it to work.

I hope to god not, but you weren't using the backup utility on a FAT32 drive...were ya? Cause that would explain it the split folders, lol.

??? I was asking about in store prices matching Impulse, lol; because I want a physical copy.

Mods. That's all. The vanilla game is not that enjoyable, but after heavy modding, it becomes much better.

I'm a little annoyed that steamgifts is now so inundated with SR3 DLC giveaways because it's now harder to see what actual games are up for giveaways. #firstworldproblems

i have no idea, unfortunately. since it's a promised unique class for the special edition, my guess is that will always be unique.

i'm pretty sure they're planning on giving out steam keys when/if it gets up on steam. i remember reading something about it, at least... i think it was more 'we'd like to and we will if we can', not a 'we absolutely promise to', though.

install the greasemonkey add-on, you can filter anything out of the list by clicking ignore, or the checkboxes at the top. 1 click and you never see those dlc's again.

Am I living through groundhog day or did you say this exact same thing previously?

Anyway, I liked it. It wasn't the most amazing game ever but it's decent for what it is and no one else makes games like it anymore for those of us who prefer to play on a larger than 4 inch screen.

Really considering New Vegas again. Before I do is there a single websites most gamers refer to for modding tutorial and downloads? Tried google...but don't know which site is trustworthy.

That will get you started. the reason your finding it hard to find New Vegas mods specifically is that people are porting all the FallOut 3 mods over into it. It's being treated as an expansion rather than a full new game by the modding community, basically.

Well, true - point taken.

So then, I will say I have loved:
Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate; Fallout 3; Morrowind + expansions; Oblivion + expansions + DLC's; and Skyrim.

:)

So is this Hack Slash Loot game worth it, or is it something that will probably find its way into an indie bundle one of these days? It looks amusing, but for $3?

Thanks, I guess I take a look what mods can do. So does it mean I can use NMC FO3 texture mod for New Vegas; I'm guessing that this mod wouldn't work cause in game item/setting differs a lot from each other. Nvm, found a texture pack for New Vegas.

Did; only saw a couple people say that they put around 15 hours into it and were tired of it. Couldn't find what price it's been before or whether or not it's been or will likely be in an indie bundle.

If I wanna ask a question, I'll ask it bud. I don't need your permission to do so. If you don't wanna answer though, that's cool.

On topic though, has it hit 75% off before?

As someone who modded for ES games (eons ago, but still) and wrote readmes I think I can say that most modders generally are pretty good about writing understandable instructions for installing their mods.

I don't think there's really going to be one catch all tutorial for all mods and all circumstances. Just read the readme. That's what they are there for and why the modders wrote them.

I'm not meaning at all to be a smartass here and I fully realize the whole world of modding is a huge rabbithole to go down that can be intimidating to those unfamiliar. Still, you'd be surprised how many times I got questions from people about things I covered in the readme.

If there's a specific thing you're still having problems with or not getting I would say then try browsing the mods subforum for that particular game on the bethsoft forums and if you still can't find the answer then post there asking for help.

Jesus horsefucking Christ. There were more than a couple responses, there's several Steam price tracking websites, and there's an omegathread on SPUF that lists practically every game that's been in every indie bundle on the first page—at least the bundles that have Steam titles.

Your post was annoyingly redundant.

You didn't read very thoroughly, then. It was discussed that the game was part of Indie Royale's April Fools Bundle.

By itself, though, I have no recollection of it ever being a daily deal before, and since I already owned it I didn't take note of its price during the summer sale.

Instead of flipping out and whining like a little girl, you could say things nicely you know. I wasn't aware of the SPUF thread, and since it's common to throw out simple questions that are on topic about current deals, it wasn't a big deal to ask if the game had hit a lower price before. Take a chill pill and learn some manners.

Thanks for the link to the SPUF thread though; you could have been helpful without being rude about it.

This thread moves at the speed of light, so I did look over some of the recent pages, but I don't always have the time to read each and every post in full detail, especially seeing as there have been some very deep, wordy subjects being discussed over the last few pages.

I missed that bit about the bundle though, so thanks for pointing it out to me. That's the reason I asked a very quick, simple question, and you helped me out. Thank you.

People complain about redundant questions because they flood the thread, when they sit there swearing and flipping out and dirtying up the thread even worse. Pretty awesome.
Really considering New Vegas again. Before I do is there a single websites most gamers refer to for modding tutorial and downloads? Tried google...but don't know which site is trustworthy.
This is where you want to go (for NV mods). http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/

On the main page there are some videos. Go to the guys Youtube page, Gopher is his name. Watch some of the New Vegas Mod Clinics. I would recommend starting at NV Mod Clinics 1-5 or ones that interest you.

He has also done tons of videos for Skyrim Mods.

Anyway you can PM me to, I can help a bit.

Sorry, was looking for a specific site that would help me out as a beginner in modding.
I guess I should've quoted, that was directed at Idiot asking about HSL and not you.

So I thought i'd ask here as many people seme to have played Saints Row 3rd here. Did anyone else have random freezing in this game? So far in the past like 9 hours the game will like randomly end up, "Not Responding" which is more than annoying as it always seems to happen right at the end of a mission and because the checkpoints aren't real saves I have to replay the same level over >.
i have no idea, unfortunately. since it's a promised unique class for the special edition, my guess is that will always be unique.

i'm pretty sure they're planning on giving out steam keys when/if it gets up on steam. i remember reading something about it, at least... i think it was more 'we'd like to and we will if we can', not a 'we absolutely promise to', though.
Do they have forums or where do they say this stuff? Really want to check it out, been playing for more than an hr but would definitely like more info before deciding which dip to take.

Nvm... found them :p

Thanks as always for your thoughtful input. My primary concern is downloading some mod that will just break and/or being malicious file itself. However, all the points are valid and I'll read the readme files thoroughly.^^

walkonshadows earlier mentioned that site, and I have slowly been checking out mods/tutorials. I just glanced through the Mod Clinic video on 'Redesigned 2' which seem interesting, and 'load order' which just confused me even more (lol).

I kinda guessed that after going over the past pages, but better be safe than sorry. I felt like the question I asked has been asked at least once during the initial Steam Summer Sale so it did felt kinda redundant. Simply, I'm too lazy to use the search feature^^

All in all I think I'm out another $10.20. People dedicate a lot of hours to make interesting mods; some of the authors should really consider sending a resume in to Bethesda.

Hero Academy which comes out on August 8 looks really interesting. Did you guys hear about Roflnauts in Awesomenauts? Seems like a little added feature for the PC version, however, it seems to run a bit slow for what it is.

To anybody who's on the fence about HSL, buy it if you like compulsive gaming with little or no reward to it. You'll click click click for hours on end with no real feeling of success even when you DO beat a level. Hooray!

Off-topic, I met a crazyman in Hollywood today who convinced me that Obama and Romney are IN CAHOOTS. Oh you guys :D

Oh, neat! I just checked my beta install, and the game unfortunately doesn't seem to be there. Someone with the full version tell us how it is?

Regarding Hack, Slash, Loot I think most people would agree that you're better off buying Dungeon of Dreadmore...
I believe Dungeon of Dreadmore have recently went on sale so you might wait.

I loved the first Political Machine but the new one with the ugly as hell bobbleheads turned me off. Seeing it for cheap on Steam made me smile until I heard it lost the historical presidents AND the campaign mode. Campaign mode was cheesy as hell in the first one, the final battles against Lincoln or Washington were ridiculous. They had 20+ stamina and loads of money. It was like Civ on the hardest difficulty.

Each election is kinda the same anyway but decent mechanics

I hope I wasn't too harsh. I get being cautious but I don't think mods themselves can house anything malicious because (almost) none of them are exes. They could potentially cause trouble for one of your saves so always keep backups before you try new mods.

Texture mods are the least likely to cause any issues though since you are basically swapping one image for another.

The load order thing can get complicated sometimes when you have a lot of mods, but BOSS automates it and makes it really easy for you. You shouldn't have to worry about that yet if you are just using a texture mod or have only a few mods, but once you start getting many you may want to look into it.

People dedicate a lot of hours to make interesting mods; some of the authors should really consider sending a resume in to Bethesda.

I think they do get ideas from modders. I notice with the Elder Scrolls sometimes features that are modded in one game will show up as official features of the main game in the next game in the series (ie window lights and chimneys mod from Oblivion, while it's a feature of vanilla Skyrim).

well, you found the forums but i'll also mention they blog every week or so, the 'news' tab. it's actually quite interesting from a game development perspective and i check up on it fairly often. some of the things they talk about require knowledge of the beta ("we tweaked xyz this week") but if you have a sense of the game you'll pick up on the jist of it.

since you've been playing, i'm sure just quick looks at the screenshots of the current build show how much work they've down overhauling it. really impressive, especially since i love even the free super alpha version.

I played the ios version one time. Wasn't a huge fan. Maybe it's just because I sucked and got my ass handed to me since there was no real tutorial level or way to play it against AI. You just had to dive right in against someone. I at least need to be given the chance to practice before being put against someone else.
