CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Deponia is now available on Steam and 20% off ($15.99) until August 14.

Daedalic Entertainment, once called “Lucasarts from Germany“ by the GameStar magazine, invites the players into a fantastic comedy adventure that revolves around a crazy love story of Rufus and Goal. In Deponia, the world has degenerated into a vast garbage dump, in which the crotchety Rufus ekes out his sorry existence.
Genre: Adventure, Indie

I'm so interested in this one that I'm bothering to embed the trailer!

this looks nice! ill probably wait for this to go further in sale. added to wishlist!
You sure that would work? Seems like all you can purchase at 50% is the upgrade to Dead Island GOTY, not the actual GOTY. Unless others have confirmed it to work. Maybe it is a glitch and giftin an upgrade will give the giftee the whole thing? Seems unlikely, but you never know.
I tried gifting this to a friend already and they said they had all the DLC available under their properties tabs, so I think they want people to share the game with other friends instead of having the 4-pack around. It's definitely an interesting approach, but I wish we had both. :cry:

I just bought Book of Unwritten Tales and now you show me this? :)

I keep thinking Supreme Commander is that mech game from Square. I wish that would go on sale. I wish there were more offline mech games, especially 3rd person games.

Square published Supreme Commander 2...?

If you're talking about Front Mission Evolved, I think that was around $6 at gamersgate at one point.

Motoki,

It really isn't such a big deal. I was starting to poke around for it anyways. With Dawnguard, I launched a new character.. thus NO guards speak of it until you're level 10. I was 9 :) No biggie though, it's just one of those things. But yes, it becomes absurd the amount of times they repeat it if you DON'T just go.

It's like sheesh.
Bah, it seems that Supreme Commander deal is not available to Europeans :/
I can't say for sure, but I don't think the actual codes themselves are region locked. I don't see any info indicating the game is region locked.

Since everyone who gets in on this deal gets two keys, you might be able to buy or trade one off of someone.

The codes are region free i believe. And yes, good idea, i will try to trade with someone here. Thanks :)
man, am i the only one hyped for dark souls? even though i know the port job will be miserable i can't wait to get my hands on it.... i got halfway through it last year before my 360 decided to take a crap (3rd one i owned that died) and i swore off consoles until the next gen hits. it is truly an awesome game. it's between that and ark city for my goty 2011. has ninja blade been on sale many times? i don't if i can resist buying it for full price but the cheap ass in me may prevail...
I would be if I already didn't own the PS3 Collector's Edition. I'll probably just buy the DLC on PSN. I wouldn't mind buying it again on PC, but I heard it's a bad port. Plus it really annoys me (as a hardcore fan of the series), that they released a patch that not only nerfed a lot of things, but made the game a whole lot easier.

Ninja Blade was 75% off the whole duration of the summer sale. I was going to buy it, but I already went way over my spending limit ;)
Don't forget to mention that Dark Souls is using that awesome GFWL service.
I might double dip on it and grab it for the pc, if the port is decent. I don't like GFWL mind you but I've never had any trouble with it so I could put up with it. As long as the port was decent and ran as good as the console version. I would probably be a buyer at around $20.

I've heard so many great things about Dark Souls, but have seen limited game play. I was pretty excited when they said they were going to release it for the PC, but was a bit skeptical on the GFWL. I would bite on a cheap price, but I think I'd go expensive it didn't include that feature (and obviously if it was better ported).

And I gave up on the 360 when my first one died. :/
It lasted a pretty good ~5 years though.
And my brother ended up fixing it, but the colors are all fucked up.
I just bought Book of Unwritten Tales and now you show me this? :)
I agree. Two nice-looking adventure games coming out in such short order is just a dick move.

I agree. I was really excited for it but then GFWL + Japanese man from From saying 'ohai port sucks*' = HOPES DELETED = way less I am willing to pay.

It went from a must buy day 1 to a wait and see. Unless the general consensus is that it's really amazing, I probably won't buy right away. If the opinions are mixed I'll wait for a decent sale and if the (non-rabid fanboi/girl) opinions are mostly bad I will just pass.

I've seen too many FAIL launches lately to go in blind like the Battle vs Chess or the Final Fantasy VII one.
:beer:500 Pages! And this thread was just started in the middle of the summer sale.

Not sure about pages. But, post wise it starts freaking out around 13,000 or so.
You people and your small number of posts per page. I've got this at only 200 pages:booty:
I refuse to do any spreadsheets. :nottalking: I work with spreadsheets all day long.

In a little bit of my defense though, it was from one of my earliest Steam purchases which also happened to be one of those complete whole enchilada publisher packs back when the complete packs really were the whole complete with a kajillion games right down to Gyromancer and Flora's Fruit Farm.

But yeah, too many games, not enough spreadsheets (NEVER!) I know.
Fallout Collection is tempting but still waiting for 75% off. It has to happen eventually....

What if Steam does a 75% off or better sale, sometime way down the line...? ;)

Unless I can get an incredible deal on a game upon release (think 50% or better) and the game likely will stuff lots of content upon release, I usually wait to buy the game LATER.

If there lots of DLC planned or game is from a company known to release LOTS of DLC, it's another sign that I should wait for major price-drops on base game or wait for some sort of Complete Pack.

I got crazy amounts of games, from both.
I tried getting a list going long ago, but I gave up.
I buy too much too often, to even keep up w/ it all...

I'm hyped, regardless of port quality or gfwl downsides. I've yet to play the game at all, putting it off for the hopes of a pc release. Have it pre-ordered at GMG for $32. I plan on using a 360 controller most likely, so as long as I can force AA and it doesn't crash, I'll be fine.

I can triple confirm me and Mr. Bard went halfsies on the Supreme Commander Gold and both got gold with the keys (he got SC and FA and I got SC since I already had SC).

I would say over all: wii, ps3, ps2, ds, and psp I probably have around 75 games in my retail backlog.

My retail list is mainly PC. But, yeah - it's pretty extensive.

It probably goes as far back as Thief 2: The Metal Age (from Thief: Platinum Collection - Retail Box)...

EDIT:
Some untouched and/or unfinished stuff from Retail includes:
Warcraft 3 Battlechest; WOW Battlechest; Starcraft Battlechest;
Homeworld 1 & 2;
Gal Civ 1: Ultimate;
C&C Anniversary X; C&C 3 + Kane's Wrath; C&C: Red Alert 3;
Brothers in Arms: Bound in Blood + Hell's Highway;
Civilization Chronicles Box (Civ 1 + 2 + 3 + 4);
Contract JACK;
Blur;
Split Second;
DIRT 1;
Company of Heroes + Op Fronts;
Suffering: The Tie That Binds;
Lost Planet: Colonies Edition;
DMC3: Special Edition;
Overlord 1 & 2;
SimCity 4: Gold + SimCity Societies;
Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space (AKA Season 2);
Dawn of War 1: Gold Edition;
Age of Pirates 2;
SWAT 4 + Expansion;

Bah, that ain't even tipping the iceberg here of Retail games...

A fourth of my mixed mainly 360/ps3 backlog just got sent to amazon for selling today. 84 pounds and 80 items. Part of me was sad to see it go but I'm also relieved. I'm at a point now where if it isn't on my pc and I don't stop everything to play it when i get it then it's going to the pile of shame.

If it goes 75% off for the holiday sale, I'll definitely buy it regardless of how bad the port it. I also seriously hope modders will fix Blighttown. Console versions had major framerate drops in that area and doesn't looks like it's fixed for PC. I haven't heard of any news for future DLC. I don't think From Software has done DLC before. I think the only reason there's DLC at all was because so many fans requested a PC version, so they wanted to add something special for it.

1. Porting the game to PC isn’t going as well as expected.

2. Not only will there be no high-definition PC version of Dark Souls, the frame-rate in areas like Blighttown will not be fixed.

When asked whether PC optimization will fix poor frame-rates, Uchiyama had only bad news. In order to get the game ported to PC in a reasonable amount of time, sacrifices had to be made. No fixes or optimizations to framerates will make it to the Prepare to Die edition. Bighttown will still be lag-town, even on a high-end gaming rig.

Okay, here's what you need to do. Throw Contract JACK away. If you have played NOLF2, you're set. If not, what the flying hell is wrong with you? NOLF1 and 2 are amazing.

Second, bump SWAT4 to the top of your list. It's not as hard as it might seem, and it's by Irrational Games so somehow they fill with atmosphere a game that should be dry as hell.

And, of course, Thief 2.

Everything else, eh. But these are the sorts of games you should get in before you die

As an aside, there are a number of kickstarters or similar projects I would have contributed to if the creators had simply promised Steam keys if the game makes it on there. I know there's some doubt as to whether Valve will approve certain games, but I don't see them rejecting a Pendulo game, plus with Greenlight I think a lot more games are going to be let in.
Man, I am liking Desura more and more the more I use it.

I think it could use a bit of a UI overhaul but overall I really like it. And I say this as someone who was very resistant to using another client at first. I like the idea of an optional client that you don't necessarily need to run to be able to play the games but it's there if you want them organized and updated. I also like that they are very supportive of, ahem, the I word and are not all high and mighty about not wanting to let this that or the other game in.

As much as I like Steam, sometimes their decisions baffle me. They've turned down some games that imho were quite good. Now if all of the games in their store were of the utmost quality I maybe could see it but they have quite a number of stinkers in there like Bad Rats. Once you let Bad Rats in you have no excuse for turning anyone's game down.

Speaking of which, is this off topic? Sure. Any worse than the rest of the thread? Hell no.

Want!

I mean, I don't $15 want, but I still want. I wish Desura did more sales. They are pretty chintzy about that but I guess they just let the devs do what they want instead of twisting their arm to slash prices.
I know that bad language is frowned upon at CAG but gosh darn doohickey heck Titan Quest is good. Really good.

In case someone missed the sales for it recently at Steam and/or Gamersgate, it is on sale now for $4 at THQ's site. Note that it does not activate on Steam though.
How many of those did you rebuy on Steam? ;)

You don't know him very well, do you?

Dude, I hadn't gotten past that part yet!!
Deponia is now available on Steam and 20% off ($15.99) until August 14.
Oh, they made The Whispered World. That game rarely goes on sale, though I found a physical copy at Half Price Books pretty cheaply. I left it on my wishlist long enough to see that it remained at full price through the summer sale.

My concern is that this one, which looks amazing and is now on my wishlist, may also not get any other discounts for a long while. Decisions, decisions...

Edit: Now that I look at their individual store pages, I see that this new one is self-published whereas as TWW has "Deep Silver, Viva Media" listed as publisher. Perhaps there's no cause for concern after all if lack of sales is the fault of those other companies.

I'm going to hope that the introductory 20% off is a good sign.

I got an e-mail in response to my question to Indie Gala.

I asked them why we were only allowed to use a certain number of points. I also said that I was disappointed because I have so many points and likely will not spend them because I was hoping to get free games, not discounts that matched Steam sale prices. This is the reply:

Hello Josh,

First of all, the games belong to the developers, not ours, we don't set the price as we want, and second, at the moment we're the cheapest store of this kind that will maintain this price full time, not for a week or for a month. I'm sorry we can't make it cheaper but that's the way the world goes around.

It's weird to me that an indie bundle group would charge $2 and $3 for some games that have been offered previously bundled with other games for a minimum of $1 and blame it on developers.

By the way, the Indie Gala store is down. :lol:

I agree about Desura. In fact, I like the way Desura works with Steam. It makes installing mods for games on Steam incredibly simple in a way that I would have murdered a nun for in the late 90s when Star Wars CTF, Action Quake 2, Team Fortress, etc. ruled my life. I realize that Steam Workshop may make it unnecessary in the future, but right now there's no easier way to play The Stanley Parable, Dear Esther (okay, now there is an easier, better way, but it costs money), and others.
