CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Yes.
Also, keep in mind - after the free 30 days, there's a $15 monthly fee if you want to stick around (like some other MMO's)

EDIT:
I remember playing through those about 8 years ago and my interest in adventure games was reignited. Glad you took the chance and picked those up. I plan on replaying them on Steam after working off some of my backlog.
Great stuff.
Still hoping one day for TLJ3.

@Motoki, It's interesting that "reverse CAGing" is considered exploitative. I mean I totally can see that, and I know people do. but, that's why I'm not giving away the extra Indie Gala codes I have through SteamGifts (even though when I first started SteamGifts I did give away some unwittingly, I bought them seperate from other CAGS before getting into any Indie Bundles). I get some people game the system, and can certainly make a case that's what I did with the Saints Row Franchise Packs, and all the Plentiful Paradox Packs I bought from Amazon.

I consider leeching up free codes and dirt cheap Indie Games (Especially since the revenue generated by the Indie Bundles in part goes to charity) to be exploitative. I looked out for really good deals on good games and put as many as I could up in an effort to raise my contributor level. However I realize that the scammers/leechers/$#@holes who paid $1 for a multiple games, stole a spreadsheet full of free codes, or created multiple accounts to benefit off the charity of others will use the exact same excuse for their actions, so I'm at a loss. All I can say is that I thought about it before taking those actions, considered the impact and the morality. I didn't find it exploitative myself to find retail games on sale at a retail outlet and then put them up for giveaways. I would also like to point out, there are several times recently that I have bought games that were on Steam as a sale and put them up. Anyway, my 2 cents.....if it's even worth that.

I wasn't super-thrilled w/ The Secret World, when I was in the Beta Weekend right before the game was released - thank God for NO NDA.
Great premise, great story-telling, great writing, great dialogue, and really good voice-acting.
Not-so-great execution on the gameplay, to say the least.
Questing in the first zombie-littered area really needed more than just "Kill X enemies", "Set X enemies on fire", "go to X locations", "Find X people", etc etc.
Combat felt floaty and not-so-hot, as well.
TSW Beta was like 30 GB in size, BTW.
This is why I'm not going to get the game. Everything about the game that isn't the baggage that comes with an MMO sounds great. The story, setting, inclusion of puzzles (even if the execution seems off) all seem really cool. If it had been a 20 hour action RPG I'd be all over it. As an MMO with that style of combat and quests I want nothing to do with it.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with buying games when they are on sale and then putting them on steamgifts either now or later.

Sometimes I get confused with the "code of ethics" we are supposed to have here.

The way I see it, if you legally purchase a game, you should be able to gift it if you want, regardless of your reasoning. I also see nothing wrong with buying a game on sale and putting it on steamgifts to raise your contribution total.

If that's important to you (and here I don't mean you specifically but anyone) I see no problems with that. :)

I agree w/ all of that. It sounds like something I'd probably be able to get down more with, if I could solo-it offline...or have the option to go solo or online w/ it (like say Diablo 2 or Borderlands).
More so than anything, w/ TSW being VERY combat-focused and "ARPG or MMO style-questing", the combat needs to look good, feel good, and be completely on-point to keep you engaged - think like Sacred 2, Diablo series, Torchlight 2 Beta, Borderlands, etc.
In the TSW Beta (not too long before the game officially launched), this just was NOT the case. I hope it has improved since then.
The problem in TSW Beta surely was NOT in the customization of your character's gear, skills, abilities; it was all in the feel and look of the combat.

EDIT:
I understand why they charge $15 per month for servers to house lots of players, but I just don't like it...MAJOR turn-off.
If TSW goes FREE-2-PLAY, I'd jump back in and give it another shot.

I disagree. Walkonshadows is a criminal, and I hereby pass a sentence of one hour a day playing Bad Rats for a term of no less than three months with no possibility of parole.

Sorry - you're behind the times - Bad Rats has a metacritic score of 9.8 now. It's a classic.

BTW - my comments were not directed at anyone specifically (on either side).

Just find it curious how people see things differently...

I reviewed this game and I must say it's a very slick, great-looking physics puzzler. TB was right on the money in that the only concern is the three hour gameplay and limited replayability. Having said that, I enjoyed the three hour (I actually went ahead and played through it a second time) journey and found that the puzzles were satisfyingly varied. It's worth 8.99 if you're a puzzle fan. If not, pick it up when it hits $5 or so. Very charming.

I'm pleased to report that Bad Rats and Coconut Queen have been ranked (I even managed a review for BR), this thread is as confusing as ever, and I ate an In-N-Out burger for the first time ever yesterday and it was A-MAY-ZING.

That being said if you were going to buy only one I would get 2 or UC depending on your aversion to GFWL. I may be selling my extra copy of UC to offset some of the cost myself.
I have Flatout: Ultimate Carnage and I enjoyed it. But I kept wanting to "takeout" the other cars during the race, I guess I am just too much a fan of the Burnout series. Flatout: UC did very well on establishing its own style, though. Burnout can feel too clean (Why do perfectly good cars choose to bump into each other?) and Flatout gives out that "redneck" kind of atmosphere. The courses aren't bad either.

I run FO: UC on a ATI 4850 + Athlon x4 620 machine @ 1680x1050, it runs perfectly.

Okay let's get something straight. I don't care what people do. Do what you want.

I'm just saying don't tell me 'Oh you guys who aren't winning anything on Steamgifts are doing it wrong because you didn't buy up a bunch of of games that have super high markups to quickly get your contributor level up to $2k'.

It's not the way I want to do things. If someone wants to that's fine, but I don't want to game the system. I want to give away what I want when I want and if doing that means I don't win as much back in return then so be it.

Better?
Sorry for late response. This was talked about before the SS. I believe Utopian ran into this problem so she could explain it much better than I can, but I believe what happened was she had an Xbox Live account which uses the same password as GFWL. But the GFWL doesn't accept numbers in the password, so if your password has numbers your locked out of GFWL. All it takes is a password change, but it's a real annoyance.

Again, I believe this is what happened, but my memory isn't what it used to be.
While I agree with this in general, my issue with it is when people view the various pay-what-you-want/can bundles as 'sales' (or, I suppose, 'pay-almost-nothing'). Bundles are meant to be a way to voluntarily support the developers to your ability, but too many people view it as 'buy them all for a penny/dollar!'. And while abuse like that will happen, and ultimately part of trusting the world is knowing that some people will disappoint you, it's still abuse and shouldn't happen.

So yea, if someone gets a bundle for the minimum, I really don't think they should be escalating the abuse even more by giving away keys for the items they already have. It wasn't a 'sale' price. It was an act of trust and goodwill from the developers - allowing people to get the games at a price they could afford, which is not necessarily the minimum.

Now, if you buy a bundle on Amazon for a fixed price as part of a true sale, the keys are yours to do with as you wish, and gifting them is a-okay in my book. But pay-what-you-want bundles are just... ethically different.
No, not exactly: I soecifically said " I looked out for really good deals on good games and put as many as I could up in an effort to raise my contributor level." but I also bought Saints Row specifically because it happened to be a game a great many BGCQ's didn't have. Which I said when I was buying them up at that time, so it's verifiable. So to answer your question directly: No I did not buy Saint's Row at close to a 10:1 ratio simply because I wanted to give that game out, I only came to know of Saints Row 3rd franchise because of the chatter in this thread, everyone thought it was a glitch, I had no interest in the game whatsoever. I started buying up the extras after everyone realized how hard it was to get rid of them, posting them in the thread and saw that our group members didn't actually own the game. I have also given 2 copies of regular Saints Row out at the same time as the Franchise Packs. I'm not saying that I didn't realize the jump my contributor status would take by continually gifting them, I didn't post a "how to" manual on Steam Gifts. I posted the stats of my account for those interested, and through it all it's pretty much a wash. I've spent as much as the retail value of what I've won. That was the ONLY intention of the post. I was actually arguing that people didn't have to spend $1,000's to win something they wanted.

I would also compare it to me hosting Indie Gala 20 pack bundles. I do so knowing that my "contributor level" here will also rise ALOT by doing so. I make no money doing it (noone paid me a single cent more than the bundle cost), but my successful trades in marketplace feedback
show that I'm a trustworthy CAG. I don't understand the point your trying to make really, and I'm trying to. In the first paragraph I make it clear that I'm posting because I've noticed I'm winning more giveaways. In the second paragraph, I give the advice for people to try to win the daily deals before purchasing themselves. in the 3rd paragraph I tell people that the point of SteamGifts isn't to try to come out ahead, and say how it has exposed me to games I wouldn't normally be exposed to (damn Motoki, you should know that, you sent me Coconut Queen). In the last paragraph I again remind people not to miss the "point" of SteamGifts.
If you got the impression of in your words "Oh you guys who aren't winning anything on Steamgifts are doing it wrong because you didn't buy up a bunch of of games that have super high markups to quickly get your contributor level up to $2k" then you've taken the entire post, and the intention behind it in a very wrong way. In conclusion, I don't really know what to say. I've taken steps that I feel prevent me from exploiting "the system" If your charging me with finding a good deal (a very good deal as it turns out) on a game and using that deal to ONLY raise my contributor level, then no I didn't. i gave out games that were the talk of the thread, even when I gave out games from the Paradox bundles, people owned one or 2 already and didn't want to pay for those games again, so I split the packs. I'm not going to say anything else about this. It's been mentioned that this thread gets off track, and it's because of conversations like this. I've learned my lesson. I won't share my opinion or post anything other than what's relevant to this thread. I'm sorry for obviously offending you on an issue you feel very strongly about, for that I apologize.

I'll throw my dog into this race if only for a trail run, But when it comes to Bundles I often throw up things onto SG not because of contribution, They even changed it so only 20% of your contribution can be from known games in indie bundles. But because I already have them and it is the easiest fair way to give everyone a equal shot.

I could just put a key up in a super special tropical place but that is kind of a first serve type deal. So really with how they fixed contribution limits on indie bundle games and known free dlc/games I am not sure what the issue people object to anymore when it comes to those.

I kinda wish that there was an option to opt out of getting contributor credit on things. I've had keys that I've gotten for free which I have thought about giving away on Steamgifts. But I eventually chose to give them away here on CAG or NeoGAF because it didn't really feel right giving away something that I got for free and the profiting to some small degree. I also knew that people might take a look at my contributions and think less of me for "gaming the system" with free stuff.

Well like I said they changed it so now you only get credit up to like 25$ dollars indie keys or 20% of your max contribution that is none indie titles. And after that you get 0% Like before the change I had almost 187$ in contribution but now after I have 125$

Awesome! Thank you!

The Steam trailer for Flatout, Ultimate Carnage sure makes it look awesome. I think I'll buy the complete pack. I have Flatout 1, but you get extra giftable copies for any games you own with this bundle.

CAG "Community" rant:
Also, this thread is becoming extremely stupid and difficult to read for a lot of people that are used to visiting it for deals. That whole "debate" about "the ethics of Steamgifts" was so horribly ill-founded and petty, I'm embarrassed for all of us. I really think some of the regulars here are making this thread way too big a part of their life.

P.S. I like reading walksonshadows posts. I bet other people do too, and it would suck if you really stopped posting.

P.P.S. Sick of hearing about the elitist BGCQ Steam group. Especially after ya'll said you weren't going to talk about it in this thread, lest you be called elitists.
I'm wondering the same thing. Every password I can recall using has numbers...
I've been using GFWL for about 2 years, and I've never had a problem with my password which has numbers in it. I even installed GFWL on my new computer last month and had to log in (with no problem I might add), so if it's recent, it's very recent. Her problem was probably different.

No

No need to become a lurker for a mere disagreement.

I personally see nothing wrong with your approach. At the end of the day SG is a business, not some charity or altruistic community. I'd say 75% of the users are lurkers and beggars who think nothing of stealing free codes and posting them just to try to get contributor status so they can try to win some free games. I mean the flood of stuff like Shadowgrounds (Summerseal), SRtT DLC, EUIII, etc. etc. just goes to show you what the majority of the community is.

I personally have no interest in building contributor status to get free games just because even $170 is too big of an investment for me. I do think there are some cool people in SG who give some cool stuff, but personally I will just give the occasional group giveaway to repay some CAG generosity. That said, I think the friendly altrustic approach is far far in the minority on the site.

Oh man, this has really gotten out of hand here.

I'm sorry that you feel that you don't wanna post here anymore. Hopefully, after a day or two, you reconsider and come back. Because (in my opinion at least) you add a lot to this board.

I kinda agree with CheapLikeAFox, there was nothing wrong with the way that you've handled your SteamGifts account. I'm not really sure why Motoki has such a problem with it.

EDIT: If I could also add, this sort of thing is one of the reasons that I have never requested membership in the BGCQ group. I just felt that something like this would pop up eventually.

Yah fuck STEAMGIFTS, if I wanted free games so badly I would just get a usenet account and put on a damn eyepatch ARGGGG. But seriously who cares, lets just hug and kith and go back to being cheap ass gamers and complaining about deals that aren't at least 75% off.

To be fair, reading Motoki's posts they aren't really very harsh or judgmental at all IMO. He's just basically saying he's fine if people want to do it this way, that's just not the way he wants to do it himself. So I think this is just some crossed wires somewhere.

So I been wondering. The thing is backloggery is fine, but I was wondering if there was a way to make an order of games that I plan on playing/keep a detailed account of.

I realized it's not that I have so many games, but I often start one and forget about it. I was wondering if I can set more of a idea/roadmap so I try to avoid that. Yeah I can use a spreadsheet but I was wondering if there is something more technological advanced, lol.

I'll agree with pretty much every point made here. We have gotten quite a bit off track several times over the last couple weeks. We should do a better job of sticking to talking about the games in here. Walkonshadows frustration is a perfect example of why, especially since we're generally a pretty friendly bunch.

I must, however, take exception to your claims of BGCQ being elitist. I'm doing my damndest to keep things fair and allow everyone in who participates around here. I might miss someone from time to time, but it isn't out of snobbery.
Is that a recent thing? My live tag password is alphanumeric and I havent had any problems.
Found it!
Am I crazy? I'm trying to play Batman. It's asking for Windows Live ID and password. I type my Xbox login stuff - email and pass. And it doesn't accept it? I just logged onto Xbox.com using that info. The heck?

Does you password contain any special characters? IIRC Xbox logins accept these but the Windows Live side does not for some inane reason.

I changed my password to something altogether different than my original and no longer have special characters. GFWL took it. It's just ridiculous I had to go through all this. Talk about a crappy first impression of GFWL. No wonder I read you folks bad-mouthing it all the time. I've sure joined that party.

I guess what bugs me more about this situation is that we're talking about systems that should be complimentary -- GFWL and Xbox Live.
My memory did fail me. It wasn't numbers it was special characters. I changed my password before I ran into this problem- mine contained special characters and numbers. I just couldn't remember which was the potential hazard.

@Eldredpe no clue, but I'll partake to fulfill my hipster quota for the day!

@Sir_Fragalot, just make a wallpaper that says if I don't play x,y,z game by so and so date, I'm a super duper d-bag. Set as desktop background, and voila constant annoying reminder every time you start up the computer =D. Technology is overrated!
Outside? But... why? You can listen to music on your computer!
This is true, but then again I kinda owe my girlfriend because she did some graphic work for me recently which if everything works out, will be helping me get more money to fuel my Steam buying .

Also to get back on track, I had a Windows Live account for at least 3 years now. Maybe 4 ish. My college switched to Windows Live for our e-mail 3-4 years ago so I used that, and I know my passwords contains letters, numbers and symbols and I have had no problems with GFWL or Windows Live with my password.

Now everything else about GFWL, yeah.... I mean I wouldn't mind GFWL if it actually worked ok, but it seems like Microsoft doesn't even bother to address that we have all these problems and we should fix them.

I suppose and Excel Spreadsheet would be as "technologically advanced" as the user is good at programming, but I believe a spreadsheet would be the best way of doing this since it allows you to easily manipulate it while also being able to maintain a local backup copy.

I know a guy from my girl's family who uses Excel Macros to maintain/update his database and website (used for a football pool). He's also created a "shopping list" spreadsheet in which he's stored many of his wife's recipes which allows her to select what she'd like to make, and it creates a shopping list for her (recipes broken down into individual components), which she can print out and bring with her to the store.

Of course, this takes times, but it's the best way to get the job done that I know of.

I recently started a spreadsheet for all of my games (title, # of games, category, serial keys, and any bonus content available for download, GOG extras for example).

The idea behind Backloggery is great, but it just isn't worth putting in the time and effort to putting all of your games on it. This is why I decided to do a spreadsheet, and this way I can include as little or an much info as I want, and even make it prettier later on if need be. ;)
