CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Meh @ the daily deal today. I already have 2 out of 3 games, though, so I probably wouldn't have bought anyway, ha. I've been hoping to start Stacking soon, but it depends on how busy I get with moving this week, etc.
This isn't directed at you, just an aside about the Asian fantasy thing. In my mind it seems kind of creepy when a guy fetishes a woman just because of her race or primary status, like say because she is deaf or because she is white or blonde or anything. Attraction is a big part of finding a partner but just personally I would never want to be with someone who basically fetishes me as a person just because of one aspect.

Maybe this is just the more common thing men talk about, so it is more obvious and every man fetishizes about their own niche of women, but it has always just creeped me out when thinking about someone being with me only because they get off about one aspect of who I am.
I have to agree with your feelings on this. I'm deaf myself (as well as a woman) so I have gotten my fair share of creeps who are only into me because I'm deaf and they think they can be the "white knight in shining armor" for a "helpless" damsel such as me. Blech.
Geno, I'm siding with you on this one - I never use torrents; I believe no good comes from their usage. What I can't find through normal, legal means, I don't need.

I think posting links to such sites creates a slippery slope, but, then again, the people here are a good lot; I'm not too worried.
There are sometimes legal torrents. I have seen some sites use them basically as free mirrors without having to worry about bandwidth. I seem to recall at least one of the indie bundles doing it but can't remember which off hand.

There are also times where, yeah I will say it, I've had to resort to a crack for a game I paid for because of obnoxious DRM. Like the time I was playing Dragon Age: Origins and and EA/Bioware's servers somehow forgot that I and many others owned all the DLC (I had it from the Ultimate Edition even) and I couldn't play any of my saves because they were saved with DLC.

Now I'm not going to be a total Pollyanna here and pretend that people aren't using torrents to pirate the hell out of games, of course they are. But I don't think it's totally black and white either. Even if it's the minority, there are some legitimate and semi-legitimate uses for them. I think it's up to the individual to use their conscience and do what they feel is right.

We also need to remember that a purchase is a vote. If you like a game and want that developer to stay in business and make more like it then buying the game, even on sale, is the best way to do that.
I just want the ability to tag games with multiple categories.
Also tag multiple games at once.

Hell at this point I would settle for being able to leave messages for people when they are offline. I don't get why Steam doesn't have this. AOL had it in the 90s.

Yeah this is a feature I'd like to see added as well. Its just a little thing, but it'd be nice to have.

How about easy order management and the ability to cancel preorders through the site etc. Or the ability to adjust font sizes without going to INI files. I love steam but its interface still feels like the same steam I used back in 2003. My bucket list:

1. adjustable font sizes
2. offline messages/message history caching
3. group voice chat
4. order managment
5. better game sorting/categories/able to group multiples at once
6. ability to select multiple games at once for download/delete or to change settings to auto update, etc
7. stop the freeze every computer I have does when I redeem a key or purchase something on the store
8. let me work in the background while doing actions like verifying cache
9. easier implementation of themes (maybe use steam workshop)
10. bandwidth management options and totals for the day/week/month
11. More update options (update weekly, daily, hourly, monthly, etc)
12. Integrated steam support system.
13. standardized game invites

There are more but I'm sure instead of any of those we will get a more efficient way to trade or show off tf2 hats or to post on facebook when we buy things.

As others have stated, I would LOVE a more efficient way of managing my games. I hate having to click each game one by one to set categories, and I'd love to be able to give games multiple tags (I have a "Completed" category, but sometimes I want to keep a game in another category (such as "Co-op") because even though I beat the single player, I want to play it with others... Portal 2 is one such case.

3. group voice chat
Steam does have group voice chat, though it is not super obvious how to get it working. In the chat window, you invite someone else to join the chat and the chat changes to a group chat. Then you choose Start Voice Chat, and you can talk to everyone in the group.

I understand that viewpoint completely, and I'm not trying to attack those that use Bittorrent. (I imagine that would upset quite a few CAG's.) I'm just very much aware of how much the platform is abused by pirates. It doesn't help that this is a video game forum, and companies frequently use pirating as an excuse for not developing certain products [or not developing them well].

Thus, I'm quite cautious about the subject.

Thanks. I didn't realize that. My thing is I just want them to streamline/modernize existing features rather than adding more sharing features etc. The problem with voice chat in steam is ive pretty much avoided it because the quality was awful compared to other free alternatives like skype. There was tons of feedback/line noise/cut outs/ etc. Most of the time my friends and I just open up skype start a call and then play a game.

Weren't they cheaper during the summer sale as well? It seems like a lot of deals popping up now seem like repeats of summers deals. Like I could swear Kalypso games were in a bundle back like this past weekend sale as well during the sale.

I have to agree with your feelings on this. I'm deaf myself (as well as a woman) so I have gotten my fair share of creeps who are only into me because I'm deaf and they think they can be the "white knight in shining armor" for a "helpless" damsel such as me. Blech.
Isn't that just the worse, I am still not sure which group of men are worse the "Knights" or the guys who think because if a girl is different it means she has to be easy and be begging for any kind of attention.

Also now I wonder how many other gamers like us are on CAG, I am mute myself, I know back on Xbox I used to be in a group full of deaf gamers XDG I think they've changed their name now though.
I just want the ability to tag games with multiple categories.
Genius! I always hate how when I tag a game into the beaten category, I have to make sure I also remove the "Add to Favorite" category as well.
Personally, the game hubs thing looks pretty meh. I want stuff that benefits library management and community group stuff.
I guess game group basically saves you from clicking the forum button and opening up firefox? Really doesn't seem like a huge change either from my point of view.
The problem with both of these is that it corrupted as I was playing. As best as I can describe without spoiling anything I got up to the boss after wiping out the surrounding area, dying as I wiped out the last enemy. The boss never spawned. I went back to the main menu to reload the game and it said my save was corrupt. This is also a huge reason why we need more than just a single autosave allowed.

Several people having the same issue, including two getting it corrupted at the end (electrical is end). http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=31934984
In that case, it's pretty unfair to claim that GFWL corrupted your save. You don't know that it had anything to do with it.
Let me know how much you enjoy it, it attualy does sound kind of fun. There isn't really to many date/life sims on the PC that are good quality. plus have a 1.50 credit on GmG
It finished downloading (680MBs) I'll give first impressions in a bit.
Also if you haven't check out Magical Diary on Steam I loved that game and will soon give it another play though. Basic run down of Magical Diary is imagine a Harry Potter type world with a life/date sim with many different storylines and things you can do but only so much time to alot during each play through kind of like Persona. So each play-though you end up finding out a new story and path that you can go down, finding out things about characters you didn't know before through previous play-through.
Oh thanks for that recommend. I added it to my wishlist and I see it has a demo too (PC&Mac, whoot =). I really liked that aspect of Persona 3 FES, only negative thing I felt about the game was maximizing a dungeoning night got a bit grindy (without a way to save/resume in dungeon), then again I did push my party far past tired. That reminds me, I should pickup Persona 4 while it's still easily available new.

Humble Bundle does torrents, a great way of handling peak demand traffic. Most linux distros, LibreOffice (successor/fork of OpenOfffice), some Android ROMs. Side note: I was impressed that torrent traffic didn't lag my Path of Exile experience, unlike WoW and other online worlds. (Which was really bad because WoW uses bit torrent for patching and pre-loading, and used to run it automatically during game play.)

In the physical media days, I used to hunt down no-CD cracks all the time because my laptop didn't have an optical drive / I hate be arsed physically swap media when switching games. Heck, I remember hex-editing Dune 2 on my 386 laptop to bypass the "check the manual for ... on page 29." (At least Civ 1, the manual checks were gameplay based and a player could learn to usually answer them correctly over time.) I'm sure others here remember encoder wheel licence checks in some 80s games.

Rather different imho, it has lost that Fallout 3 green cast, and no longer looks like a supersized WinAmp 1.x/2.x knockoff.

That opinion is absurd to me. Beauty is subjective; people are attracted to different features. He obviously isn't dating people solely because they're asian; they happen to be more likely to align with what he considers attractive. Saying that that's creepy is basically claiming that it's creepy not to find everyone on earth physically attractive.

These new features would be a great topic for the Steam discussion thread, but I understand that this one gets more traffic.

I get the cynicism some have about the types of features we might see, but that update they did recently to allow custom grid pictures in your library came out of left field. That one won't have much effect on Valve's bottom line.

There are some people with unusual performance problems in SR3. It runs just fine on my early 2009 midrange (AMD X3 720BE / Nvidia GTX 260). I would suggest picking another example (or list specs).

It's kind of funny, but the Steam Mobile app is actually better in many ways for Steam usage. It has old message caches for Steam chat (also, can't you guys just leave comments on offline users' profiles if the message is not too embarrassing for the general public?), no extreme pauses when purchasing items, and it has that sweet install remotely to the computer currently connected to your account. I'm actually surprised by how much they packed into this app.

Anyway, back to deals. So I'm purchasing that Guns of Icarus Online 4-pack because it looks cool and the discount for a release title is pretty fricking massive. $8.75 compared to $32.99 shows me a company worth supporting on launch. It's riding that line so close to 75% that I can't help but buy, buy, buy. xD

Here's hoping for the sell back your games for pennies feature. I'd honestly pay a few cents to remove some of the games in my "dislike" category hehe

There is "dungeons" but really more of like a puzzle using your magic skills to find a way out of the dungeon.

The main focus is just like the story aspect from Persona but amplifed and shorter to get through. The game took me around 2-3 hours I think to get through once and there is even a skip previous text if you want your next go's to be faster. But each NPC it seems has their own backstory plus there are multiple ways each NPC's backstory can go as well depending on your actions.

Plus it has the honors of being one of the very few games that surprised me with the writing and a twist I didn't see coming at all. :D and that is for just one of the available NPC's storylines.

And I'm buying High School Dreams too... yikes.

I actually saw this game (or something that looked exactly like it) on the PSP. It was $5 though, so I couldn't convince myself it was worth it. After the 20% code on GMG it comes out to $0.99, AND its trade in value is $0.50 so... >_>

That's an interesting site! It's a less common occurrence today, but growing up, I used to get really pissed/disappointed when a game didn't have subtitles because that generally meant I wouldn't understand one damn thing about the storyline or even what I was supposed to do in the game.

One of the reasons I love Valve's games so much is that they pack their games full of subtitles - even including ambient noise (many games just have the dialogue subtitled). I really like the ambient noise subtitles because it gives me more of an idea of what kind of atmosphere I'm playing in - kind of like how hearing people can sometimes get really scared by horror movies because of all the noises going on in the background. Some people may think Valve can go a bit overboard with the subtitles, but I truly do appreciate them.

I love that site, its really well done and also they were behind this really well done article, how I found out about them myself,

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...0_-creating-games-for-a-diverse-audience.aspx

Basically talks about how everyone is really just temporarily able bodied, Due being only one accident,or illness, or even just natural age before they also have issues with current games.

Also here is another good article http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...essibility-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters.aspx this one talking about the button mashing segments of recent likes like God of War and Uncharted.
That's an interesting site! One of the worst things with the Kinect type future games as well. They totally ignore the fact that many people just can't make the gestures and voice commands they want.

This is why I didn't buy it during the summer sale. I like to keep my playtime/cost ratio to at least 1:1, and this game didn't look like it had 10 hours of playtime in it.

I don't even need to sell them back if I could just trash some of the games in my library I'd be more than happy.

Well it does, like there is no main story, The only constant between games is the short little intro and then each day of the week you choose which magic class to go to or rather to study or sleep. This is most like a old game called Princess Maker.

The actual story depends on what choice you make, For example there is at least 3+ love interests. Each one of them is a story onto themselves, each roommate you have is a different story and then there a few other npc's that are also a different story.

The easiest way to explain this if you have no idea what I am talking about yet. Imagine Game of Thrones but instead of reading all the peoples stories throughout the book/show at the start you picked one and then read though it. So each "story" can be finished in 3 hours.

Just because you finished with Jon Snow's story there is still Arya's,Sanya, and Tyrion and Daenerys to read though. and while each one shares some of the same common set-up each one has a completely different story and feel.

I wanted to weigh in here. There is a difference between having a "fetish" for categorical definitions of people and, more benignly, someone recognizing that he finds certain elements to be attractive in others and acknowledging that this is typical (but not exclusive) to certain ethnicities.

I don't think it's right to use the concepts of having a "type" and having a "fetish" interchangeably. Someone can have a type, have that be what prompts them to get to know someone in the first place, and then fall in love (or not) through getting to know the real person.
It's kind of funny, but the Steam Mobile app is actually better in many ways for Steam usage.
Much of what the steam mobile app does is available on their (unpublicized) mobile website http://store.steampowered.com/mobilestorefront/ which is really nice if you don't have one of them oh-so-trendy phones. The messaging feature however is part of the app, I think.

One of the worst things with the Kinect type future games as well. They totally ignore the fact that many people just can't make the gestures and voice commands they want.
Thanks for those articles. In a similar vein there was this piece on Slate a short while back addressing subtitling and streaming video. A lot of subtitling is strictly aimed at language translation, so it surprises me when I see [door creaks] or [footsteps echoing]. The sad thing is how advancing technology can make things less accessible; before the CD-ROM/Multimedia revolution, everything important was written. I remember other discussions of ebook DRM impeding text-to-speech tools.
I don't even need to sell them back if I could just trash some of the games in my library I'd be more than happy.
Hear hear, especially bundle stuff that I didn't want.
Here's hoping for the sell back your games for pennies feature. I'd honestly pay a few cents to remove some of the games in my "dislike" category hehe
I wish we had this feature, since GMG already has it. Problem is, it's an odd system that not every publisher exactly likes. I was reading a forum topic on GMG the other day and someone was explaining why GMG's system and DRM is so rigid and such and how it pretty much all stems from the trade-in system.

A trade-in system on Steam may be a catch 22 in some ways. For example, there would be no more offline mode. GMG's Capsule has no offline mode because it HAS to verify your games every 3 days, because if you trade a game in, it's still playable for those three days. It's an autocheck, and if it checks after the three days and sees that you traded the game in, it disables it in your account.

That's not a huge deal, but it's just added DRM to Steam, which is already a form of DRM. As it stands, Steam can be played in offline mode, which is a plus. A trade-in system would remove that feature.

It becomes quite apparent that you have backlog issues when the great motivator that finally gets you to knock a game out is the fact that the sequel is nearly upon you. I spent a day before OMD2 getting 5 skulls on everything in OMD1. I've been click click click-ing my heart out in Torchlight. Then, 2 days before Darksiders 2, I realize I never finished 1. Had to start all over, too, since I played it on 360, then sold the 360 copy when I got it on Steam. Oh well, about halfway through, give or take.

At least I won't have that problem with Borderlands2, I've beat that several times.

@idiotique It wouldn't have to work like that. That description of GMG makes it sound overly complicated. That system sounds weird.

We all would be online when we make the trade and they remove it from the account at that time. If you can only trade through the client, it would check then and you could immediately go offline.

I spent ~1 hour getting started and playing 3 in-game days. I the only reference point to something similar I have is Persona 3 FES.

High School Dreams seems to meet expectations in structure, managing activites and relationships on a Persona 3 like level of limited-time-in-a-day. Where Persona 3 is menu driven, High School dreams works more like many third person RPGs/TPSs (Third Person Socializers, duh ^_~). There are customization options for you room/clothes/hair/accessories/makeup with the intention that you pickup more choices from the mall.

The script is well written and sufficiently varied to suit a "grown-up". There is wit, sarcasm, & humor. So far the game consists of dialogs, walking around talking to people, walking around to find people, places, things, shopping, a running hidden-objects-lite minigame, some other guitar hero-lite mini games. In three in game days, I made some friends, when shopping, found things/places, had a date, had a sleepover.

The voice acting is quite enjoyable. While the graphics won't wow you, they have a bright and consistent look that suits the game. I do suspect they are 1024x768 though. No aliasing annoyances. The music sets the mood during activities.

It has a subtitles option (in well integrated dialog bubbles). I didn't catch anything that wasn't also written, but I can't be 100% sure. (Sometimes minutes can go by watching japanese dramas without realizing the subtitles aren't working.) It is also suitable for one handed play.

Minor Quibbles: The engine seems to have a little bit of random momentary pause (but not stutter). The UI isn't completely obvious (it's good, but a little experimentation is in order). For example you can navigate with keyboard or mouse. I haven't figured how to run using the mouse. The inital load time when starting/loading a game is several attention spans long (20 seconds?).

If you have any interest in High School Dreams, it's an easy recommend at $1.23 (24 hour sale), and I personally would pick it up at it's normal $5.

Ashekitty: Thanks for that review. I like that sort of genre anyway so the just about $1 price was a no brainer for me, but it's nice to know someone else thought somewhat highly of it so that I probably didn't waste a whole dollar.

On an unrelated note, for those that (like me!) that it bothers that games you add to Steam or even some Steam games don't have an image in grid view, some people over at Neogaf took it upon themselves to make their own custom images for a whole slew of games.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=477211

They even did one for the Street Cleaner Simulator.

Anyway, if you've got non Steam-games you added to Steam and would like them to have a grid view image it's probably worth a look over there.

I know you can make them yourself but I am lazy. :p

I am worse. I play the first game when the second game comes out to see if I need to get the second game on sale .

Anyway does anyone have a solid release date on T2? Forgot I had that game preordered .
