CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I'm convinced that the only difference in this year's sale with the flash and community votes is that deals that would have otherwise ran the length of the sale are withheld and turned into temporary flash deals for the sake of excitement.

So instead of having some games on sale for 50 to 75% off for the entire sale, they have cut that back to 20 to 40% and then they put them on a flash to make you "excited" at the temporary price drop.

Anyone think that portal 2/l4d2/alan wake/new vegas might come on sale again? Didn't pull the trigger the first time and now I am regretting it

Weakest day so far I think. I'm slightly torn on GTA IV Complete, but not really. I think Limbo is the most worthwhile thing up right now. Regardless of the token naysayer, it's a very interesting and unique little game for the price.

Then again, it was just in a HIB.
So many opportunities to win Railworks 3: Train Simulator 2012 over at steamgifts (that is if anyone actually wins).
Yeah, that's just people who want Contributor status because it's the best bang for your buck. Buy a 90% off game or bundle and post it on Steamgifts, get credit for 10x what you paid in contributor status.

Since Steamgifts, outside of the CAG group giveaways, hasn't really given me much, I don't feel it's worth it to spend any money to be allowed to enter those "exclusive" giveaways. Plus with so many contributors nowadays, your odds aren't that much better.
I still have not used my ps3 controller to play certain games on my pc but I am going to try it when I get home tonight. Do I need to go to a website to download the drivers or will my computer automatically download the drivers for me (I am using windows 7)? I see on youtube that show different websites that offer drivers to download.
Unfortunately if you just plug your PS3 controller into your PC it will not recognize it. Microsoft has reserved those rights for its Xbox controller :) You'll have to use a third-party software and driver system to get it to recognize the controller. DS3_tool and MotionInJoy are the two most popular and the ones I used.

It worked pretty well but it never really felt like a satisfying experience. It was like driving a crappy car with a Mercedes body put over the top. Sometimes the controller had difficulties syncing with the dongle and my PC, and once in awhile the controller's response felt a bit sluggish. Just a few milliseconds off. I tried it with the official DualShock 3 controller and two third-party ones (Nyko Raven and DreamGear Shadowforce) and had the same results. It also felt somewhat burdensome to boot a program, sync my controller, calibrate it if the setting didn't save or didn't load, and *then* play the game. First world problems, right?

In the end I ended up buying a Razr Naga Tournament Edition controller. It's been a joy to use and I've found myself using it on games I normally would use a mouse and keyboard (Saints Row: The Third for example).

Just my experiences.
Good lord look at all that DLC!!! Does anything actually come with the vanilla version of the game at all?
It comes with a passion for trains. If you get the GOTY edition you also get a genuine fondness for accuracy in simulation.

I am pretty sure they will, since they have been reusing games that have gone on sale over and over. I missed the Dead Island and Borderlands GOTY so I think they'll be on sale again.
Anyone think that portal 2/l4d2/alan wake/new vegas might come on sale again? Didn't pull the trigger the first time and now I am regretting it
Portal 2 is doubtful, it was already a daily.. L4D2 and New Vegas might make it as a daily, and Alan Wake might as well, but I think it was discounted twice already.

No, I think the flash sales are meant to replace the encore day. With games going on sale in flashes, you have multiple chances to buy a game at the discount price. Obviously this will work more like a bunch of mini encore days the farther we get into the sale and we see more repeats from past daily deals. But even games that were flashes on day one (like Mafia II or Deus EX HR) will seem like encores when thy appear as a daily sometime later in this sale.
Vote for KRATER! That is all.
Don't you dare tell me what to fucking do.

Just kidding, I already did. :p
San Andreas has a real problem with controllers because they don't allow you to remap the d-pad. It's permanently set to character movement. Remappers like Xpadder can't change this. There is a workaround/mod where you obtain the version 1.0 of the game and use a utility called SACC to reconfigure it, I think I got it to work once but it's a real pain in the ass.
Hmmm that is disappointing to hear. Guess that's another $7.50 saved though. Thanks for the input.

I was originally going to pass on GTA complete, but after having someone from the UK to help me get it for $8 I couldn't resist it.
Vote for KRATER! That is all.
I really want it to win. I just hope Sanctum (which I already have) doesn't have more exposure and awareness among voters. Eye shouldn't be a worry.
MotioninJoy

They can be a bit finicky but they do emulate 360 pads if need be.

Finicky =
1. Installing them in a way in which they stick and continue to work through reboots can be tricky.
2. If you haven't de-synced the controller then it'll turn on the PS3 when you connect/disconnect. (I think it's just one of those but I forget which...on connection I think)

Long-story-short, they eventually pushed me to just buy a wired 360 pad for $30. (D-pad still sucks donkey dong)
Personally, I really didn't like the DS3 Tool from Motioninjoy - software connects to server to download the drivers, have to stay online to use it, and online ads so the creator gets money. I know there are now offline versions (fan made), but still I never liked it. I'm currently using a PS2 controller with like a 10yr old Super Dual Box Pro adapter, which is now beginning to die.

I too am being pushed to just buy a wired 360 controller, but $30 is lot and not in my budget right now thanks for the Steam sale.

Anyhow, yay new thread! I really wished I got on that price mistake when the Stronghold Complete collection was 91% off this morning.

From the Faerie Solitaire Everyone Wins A Copy giveaway I got a copy of Fairie Solitaire.

From Hal's CAG Group Only giveaway I got Rush.

The only thing I've won in like 7 months of regular giveaways was a copy of Secret of the Magic Crystals the other day. Wanted the game so I was very happy, but the prize to winning ratio just doesn't seem to justify me giving things away for the sake of it.

Now giving away an awesome Train vs. Zombies DLC to promote the purchase of Railworks 3? I'll do that any day.

Anyone in the UK who would be willing to assist with the regional pricing of GTA Complete? Please send me a pm if you are.

Unless I've lost my mind, Steam has put all of their daily deals on sale during the final day in the past. It's possible that they could do it again.

Regarding the Securom talk earlier, it appears the revoke limit for Arkham City is only 2 according to steam forum users. I've already revoked mine twice, damn.
Unless I've lost my mind, Steam has put all of their daily deals on sale during the final day in the past. It's possible that they could do it again.
You have lost your mind. Steam usually has a recap day at the end of the sale with the most popular dailies, but far from all of them. That is not a guarantee either especially with the different format this year.

Can anyone talk me down from getting the Grand Theft Auto Complete Pack? It LOOKS like too good of a deal to pass on, and I only own Vice City for the original XBox. Anyone care to intervene?

how did you get it for $7.50?
Got GTA IV: Complete Edition for 7.50

Already have it for 360 but want to use those nice looking mods for it. Plus never played any of the expansions.

Will try this with a PS3 controller when I get home.
I never knew that Sega Saturn controller was so highly prized. I actually had a Saturn ages ago but I think it's long since gone. I'm sure it got dumped or sold or whatever when my parents sold their old house a few years back.

As for what controllers I use, I actually don't own any consoles currently (not counting the Onlive one) but I bought a wireless 360 controller for PC gaming and a PS3 controller for Android. Those seem to work pretty well for me in most cases. Not really a big fan of futzing with motionjoy or xpadder or any of that so if something doesn't have controller support I usually just deal with KB&M.

I kind of think they may be testing to see what comes up as more popular since they're obviously still discounting the losers anyway, but maybe I'm just reading too much into things.

I think you're right that it's a whole strategy tactic to make people feel excited on these time limited deals and give them an illusion they had a choice in a deal when the reality is they are all going on sale sooner or later.

I know they hired an economist a little bit ago (who wrote a huge assed blog with charts and graphs and formulas about the economy of TF2 hats. Seriously) so it does seem like they are mixing it up and going for some more psychological selling tactics.

I hope they don't get rid of the encore day. I usually get anything I really want first go round but I just like the comfort of knowing that most of the big high profile deals will be back on the last day anyhow.

Oh and re: Steamgifts

Yeah pretty much you have a better chance to get struck by lightning than win unless you enter really small pool giveaways like the CAG ones, but with all the people asking to get into that group lately, even those giveaways will probably start seeing a larger pool eventually.

I'd enter some of the Penny Arcade giveaways but I haven't posted there in ages and they get really bitchy about lurkers entering their giveaways.

That's a sweet score on Secret of the Magic Crystals.

I've probably entered around 100 giveaways since the SS started with no luck. Seems like the odds are pretty poor.

I seriously doubt they'll get rid of encore. There's no evidence, and Valve tends to stick to a predictable pattern here. Seems like every sale people are doubting it.

Totally random, but assuming it doesn't go any lower I remembered I wanted to finally pick up the Freedom Force bundle: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1662/

I will help you out with that my friend.
If you do not buy it you will hate yourself for not doing it. If you do buy it you will play it at least once when you should be getting pussy. Me personally, I am 35. I am at the point in my life where I would rather not hate myself so i can sleep at night and dream about pussy I could have gotten.

Statistically speaking, your odds of winning a public giveaway are approximately 0.26%, which is approximately 1 in 400. YMMV

I bought a USB Saturn controller back around the launch of Street Fighter 4 cause everyone was saying that's the best pad for fighters. It was pretty good I'd say. Just sitting in a drawer now, I realized after buying SF4 that I'm just not into fighting games anymore. They might still sell those on eBay.
Hey guys I put up a SteamGifts giveaway for CAGs for Limbo.

Sweet, entered! Thanks!

I'm trying to decide if I should get GTA IV Complete or not. I got the vanilla version for Xbox 360 when it first came out, but I never got around to finishing it. Plus this version comes with both of the DLC for only $7.49. Hmm... Good thing I have 30+ hours to decide.
how did you get it for $7.50?
It's currently on sale for $7.49: http://store.steampowered.com/app/901583

I need to find better things to do with my time:

To whom it may concern:
I am writing because in my experience, Layernet has the best and most premier selection of simulator games on the market. Your selection and variety is simply amazing. Unfortunately, I prefer to purchase my games on Steam, a digital game download service (please see store.steampowered.com). I have noticed none of your games are available on Steam for purchase :(

In particular, I am every interested in Bungee Jump Simulator. I've always thought bungee jumping sounded quite exciting and have always wanted to know what it is like to do so. Unfortunately, it is quite a risky activity and I am quite risk averse. Some might make fun of my risk avoidance, but it has allowed me to reach the ripe old age of 30 in one piece! Simulators are the perfect way for me to experience all of life's excitement without risking my good health. I am very excited to experience bungee jumping through your game, Bungee Jumping Simulator. I would prefer to purchase it through the Steam service as Steam allows me to access all my games conveniently and per their terms of service. I already own a Railworks Simulator game from another company and am considering a Shipping Simulator game and an Agricultural Simulator game if my blood pressure can stand that much excitement! You have other great simulators such as a Mining simulator, Woodcutting simulator, and many vehicle simulators. I would love to be able to purchase those from Steam if possible.

Please let me know if you have any plans of making your catalog available on Steam, I would greatly appreciate it! Otherwise, I will be forced to purchase it from another service and well, that's a risky decision I am not prepared to make just yet!

According to my records, I managed to snag it for $1.87 in the Summer 2010 sale. Not saying it necessarily will get that low again, but it has been in the past. So if you're not going to play it RIGHT NOW, might be worth waiting. (OTOH, it's only $1.87 you're saving, but that's almost the cost of Coconut Queen!)

@ Fox. You are too much.

PS - I would also buy them.

An excellent point. Wait on it and then grab FF and Coconut Queen.

You're Welcome.

So UK buyers can get the entire GTA pack (all the games) for $7-$8? I guess it's doubtful now with everyone asking, but I'd love to get some help there if anyone overseas would offer! PM me please. :D

I remember trying to fiddle around trying to connect my PS3 controller a while back. Although it was on my decently old build, so that was most likely the cause of all the hassle. I stumbled upon a Logitech one for free a while back, and it really suits whatever need I have for one nowadays. As long as it has a D-pad, analog stick, and a comfortable button lay-out, it works for me! Even resembles a PS2 controller.

Xpadder, although old and probably not up to par with any programs anymore did the trick with a lot button-mapping issues I had. It basically just remaps the controller to keyboard buttons to avoid other issues. Is that still a good program to use nowadays?

And to http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/member.php?u=261202Warreni,

Thanks for the info about TW2 and GOG! Had no idea about that.
how did you get it for $7.50?
I'm guessing they are having it gifted from another territory? If it were $7.50 in America I'd bite but I'm not sure I'm willing to go through all the trouble of finding someone to trade with then negotiating the terms... If someone in the UK wants to be nice and just trade me the bundle for something valued at $7.50 then let me know, my Steam handle is Rcerboss.

Same. I'd be in at that price.

Very sad today...Ticket to ride or its DLC is not discounted, and i own the other games in todays bundle

I realize it was released recently (5/12) but I figured some discount would take place since its bundled.

Its a great buy if you didnt have the other games...basically getting them for free heh
Same. I'd be in at that price.
Add me to that too. If anyone is interested in trading I'll buy $7.50 worth of games and trade for the GTA complete pack.
