CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
Well, you're right, somebody outside of our "realm" isnt likely to go "gotta catch 'em all" but they are going to get whatever fill they can possibly want. And thats awesome.

And who's to say they DON"T acquire at least MOST of it at some time or another? Think about some of the hardcore here and how they collect specific genres etc. If you're into trains and it's the best game in town, youre whole spending is likely to go towards it.

I bet Ill spend at least a grand this year on gaming (I'm tempted to say during this sale but more likely between this and the winter sale) As I have various tastes, its all over the map. But if I didn't, bring on the 1890 Steamer Steel Continental Express baby!

And a service called "steam" just has to carry the top Train sim in the land. It just has to.
I'm a zombie nut, so honestly were it not for the Trains vs. Zombies DLC I would be laughing with the rest of the "cool" kids. (I mean we're all vidya game nerds so how cool can we really be?)

To be honest though experiencing these odd games is starting to be a pretty entertaining past time for me. I mean the memories I have from Revelations 2012 and Secret of the Magic Crystals will probably leave a longer lasting effect than the latest Red Faction or the 1000 Everyday Genius puzzles I am soon to complete.
Coconut Queen is in the Friends Bought section of my Steam store page. Oh you guys...
The premise is lol-worthy and a bit cringe-worthy, but it's actually not that bad of a game in a Big Fish sort of way. I'm almost sorry to admit that because I wanted it to be a bigger trainwreck, but they did seem to actually put some effort into. It has a story and voice acting!
(Maybe I missed it before but...)

I just saw that the Indie Action Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2574) and Indie Puzzle Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2573) are 75% off.

True they will probably end up in one of the various bundles, but for the price it's about the same.
Damn, those are cheap though Meridian 4 stuff does keep popping up in the non-Steam indie bundles. Debating...
Yeah, it's only a joke because of the DLC. People have it in their head that you need to spend $2000+ to get the full game, but as Motoki already said, almost nobody has all the DLC. Most people pick and choose a couple of DLC of stuff that they're interested in and then stop.
Personally, the more I look into it, the more badass it seems. I mean, people get nutty for stadiums being "correct" on sports games and such. RailSim has full LINES correct (yes, I know the in between stations are probably generic but 16-20 stations, even modestly represented is still pretty damn cool.
Had I less backlog or more interest in sims, I would roll at least $100 worth. (probably going best bang for the buck) So, I'd be in for 10% which I would think makes me more than casual.
I think more people should consider a purchase if only to help get over the "must have all the DLC or else I have NOTHING" syndrome (I do not suffer from this so apologies if I seem harsh)
and most importantly, the ladies.;)
Well as the "Sterotypical" train collecter in the media is a old grandpa apparently the trick is to get married and then after 10 years of good marriage take over the sewing room, and slowly the rest of the house with trains; after you know she's stuck with you for life anyways. :cold:
Wow.. Sanctum. Wasn't expecting that.. didn't realize it was popular, like, at all.
Well apparently it's only 3-5% more popular than the others.

I see that orcs must die 2 has a -10% off the pre-order. I have the original on XBLA and loved it, but now with all the games Im backlogging thanks to the summer sale I'm thinking it might go on sale not too long after it is released. Agree or disagree? I haven't noticed how often the original goes on sale.

I keep praying for Kingdoms of Amalur every new community vote, flash deal, daily deal. So far I have been crushed. I'll even take 50% off.
The new community vote deal better include Jade Empire, or all hope is lost!
This. It's in my wishlist and awaiting further discount.
Ugh. Steam voters let me down. Well hopefully we see Krater pop up as a flash or daily soon.
Considering that another Fatshark game (Hamilton's) has been in an indie bundle Krater may even end up in one of those, but probably not for quite some time.

Anyway, I think anytime these votes have 30% vs 60% pretty much 60% is guaranteed to win. I mean maybe if you did Skyrim @ 50% off (for the 800th time) vs Bad Rats @ 90% off then you'd get the smaller discount to win, but short of that it's just the greater % off that gets the votes.

No you should be harsh. People need to get the hell out of this mode of thinking. I need to get the hell out of this mode of thinking. I've seen people pass up good games on excellent deals over feeling like there's too much dlc or that it ruins the deal to have to get it all when a lot of times the dlc is really trivial horse armor-esque crap.
Now it all makes sense. anarchyoblivion must've added $2,000 to his Steam wallet to purchase all of the Railworks DLC.
But he put too much - it's only around a thousand today!

The only consolation for Sanctum's win, is that we may yet see the exact same deal on Krater as a flash deal. Or daily deal.

Sanctum's on sale again, yeah! /sarcasm

I was just about to buy the Double Fine Bundle when I noticed I already had Psychonauts. Must've gotten that during the winter sale. I've already played through Costume Quest and although I loved it, it was a bit repetitive so I don't think I'll wanna replay it anytime soon. Stacking, I only had minimal interest in, so I was really only purchasing the bundle because it was a good deal. Guess I'll pass now.

It will definitely be on sale during the winter sale, but it's anyone's guess if it'll be a midweek or weekend deal before then.

Well, it is the best game of the three. Granted, it's been on sale a lot, but if people don't really care about (or don't like) the other games, why not vote for the game that's actually pretty good?

I beg to differ. Krater looked like the best game of the three to me.
The new community vote deal better include Jade Empire, or all hope is lost!
If Jade Empire get a community vote, it'll be put up for 75% against 90% off Skyrim and 88% off MW3. Point is, it'll probably lose if it's put up, unfortunately.

Oh yeah I forgot that Sanctum is the best game of the three. Silly me for having a different opinion on that one!

Stronghold 3 is #8 on today's top seller list. Ugh. I'm crying for you people. Do you hear me? Crying!

In all seriousness among my rapidly approaching 1k games library this is probably the purchase I regret the most. Well Stronghold 3 tied with A Game of Thrones Genesis. Both are flaming turds. And I don't mean Bad Rats Horrid Henry so bad it's funny to joke about them flaming turds, I just mean shitty, shoddily thrown together buggy, dated awful, awful games.

I rarely go on negatively about games this much but if you are considering Stronghold 3 please I beg of you re-consider. Donate to charity, buy Bad Rats instead. Yes, I'm serious.

Though I'd love to jump in on the Batman Pack...I already have Batman: AA GOTY. I'll just wait until Batman: AC GOTY arrives and goes on sale. Perhaps during the Winter Sale.

Trying to tone down my impulse buys and keep purchases $5 or less from now on.

I was hoping they'd put the Stronghold collection on sale, rather than the Stronghold 3. Never got around to picking up the Stronghold collection when it was on sale earlier.

Anyone know if all best buys sell steam cards? I think I saw someone said they purchased one at best buy, but I'm not 100%. They aren't online, and I'm trying to use a best buy gift card to buy it. I just built a pc (switched over from a macbook) and the amazon sale earlier this month combined with this steam sale have destroyed my wallet (seems to be the trend around here). My backlog seems to be growing every day, I cant wait till this sale is over.

Pretty sure it's only gamestop

So the choo choo train game has now become the biggest, easiest, and cheapest way to inflate your contributor standing on steamgifts today. Good Lord, I even entered a couple of the giveaways just cuz.....

Gamestop sells them in either $20 or $50 sets.

Best Buy does not.

Can anyone recommend Sanctum? It's a good price at least, and I don't have it...

Edit: Also thoughts on Shoot Many Robots?

No fooling, I totally am. If I didn't have so much to backlog already from this sale I would drop $100 worth without question. There's a response from RWs in the steam forum that was so eloquent even though it was directed at Steam trolls, I gained mad respect for them as a community.
I vote with my dollars. I will vote this winter sale. You can quote me on that.
I get it but at the same time I don't. If you LOVE a property, I can see wanting everything. But often, the tack ons end up ruining the experience you had in the first place. Some, like Walking Dead, can walk that highwire very well and I think LEND themselves (by their concepts) to more adventures. Others are so perfectly formed in their singularity, any additions are actually subtractions.
The trouble is, you never can know which it's going to be and with packs and deals and just the sheer fear of "if I love it Im gonna pay double in the long run", you make decisions you wouldn't normally make. In this day and age, this sort of thing isn't so hard to track. Look back at the end of the year and see if you really did spend double or if you bought a lot of DLC just to hedge against having to pay more for it later.
And avoiding a game because you can't collect all the DLC is a level of insanity I can't comprehend. Try it, if you love it, happily buy the rest (I think we all have games we'd pay double/triple for just to have more of). I'm going to try Railworks. If its transcendent, I will gladly pay 1k for more of the experience (likely in stages, as to make sure Ive not exhausted of it yet)

Collecting anything, as a rule, is usually counterproductive. It's literally chasing the dragon you can never catch.

It's a solid 1st person tower defense game. There really isn't any story and no personality from the main character, but it makes up for that with gameplay. I believe you can play coop with others as well.
So the choo choo train game has now become the biggest, easiest, and cheapest way to inflate your contributor standing on steamgifts today. Good Lord, I even entered a couple of the giveaways just cuz.....
Yeah, this might be the only reason I would regret purchasing myself since my chances today on steam of winning it seem might high...lol
What else do they have to fill the void? Models? A grown man with $1k worth of train models (and likely a "train room" to match) has a certain sadness to it. $1k simulator hidden on a hard drive, easier to keep to yourself.
Why would you hide it? I would hide a My Little Pony obsession over a train obsession any day of the week. With a train obsession, you're in good company with Walt Disney, Mandy Patinkin and Ward Kimball.

Keep an eye out for Amazon sales. They will probably have it on sale again sooner or later.

I suspect the older Stronghold games didn't get a 'franchise sale' because they are owned by different publishers right now than the newer one.

Dungeon Defenders 75% off is the new flash deal. All the DLC is marked down too, so now the question is whats worth picking up out of the dlc?
That's not to say that the DLC is cheap, I still think it's expensive outside of the odd sale. It's just that almost nobody spends $1k+ on it.
I only buy passenger-focused and/or USA routes that are on sale. I tend not to care about specific locomotives so I don't buy those.

As far as a game goes, it's a simulation that sometimes get into transatlantic flight territory on Microsoft Flight Simulator, but there is some challenge in performing the correct stopping patterns and switching freight quickly in the yards.
