CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Happy to see Sim City 4 won. I picked that up along with the Stalker series. I figure I may pick up one or two more games and then bow out. I'm spending way too much money on deals lately, dammit.
Holy balls people, those Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate and Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity deals are BITCHIN'.

I have Sins on Impulse, but this price is good emough to get me to buy it on Steam.
I think I am going to wait for Rebellion to drop to buy it on Steam. I will keep my impulse copy for now.
Stalker has a grid based inventory so you need a mouse or mouse equivalent for that. Apart from that it's not a complicated game.

Thief COULD translate to controller but it would be tight to fit all that in. You would need a walk modifier, two lean directions, and two inventory directional cycles and probably two more for weapons. Then use, crouch, attack, block, holster, jump.

Hrm, it sounds like Thief could be doable.

Right Trigger = Attack
Left Trigger = Block
Right Bumper = Lean Right
Left Bumper = Lean Left
D-Pad Left/Right = Cycle Inventory
D-Pad Up/Down = Cycle Weapons
Left/Right Stick (Click) = Walk Modifier
Left/Right Stick (Click) = Crouch
X = Use
Y = Holster
A = Jump

You even have "B" free for something else.
Thanks for the information guys! :) I will definitely pick up the Thief bundle. I am a sucker for shealth games. I'll think about the STALKER franchise though.
You'd also know to wait until the newest one goes on sale because it's got all that plus more.

So this thread takes your money but then it gives it back.
While that might be true, I don't think we'll see the newest one for $5 until at least the Winter sale. Probably not even by then.

I played the demos for the Carpe Fulgur Collection, and is it just me, or do the later two games seem to pale in comparison to the first? Also, I've perused through the thread a bit and Thief seems to be a rather appealing deal. I have no idea what it is, though; could someone give a brief rundown of what it is? :D
Good grief. The SR3 Season Pass DLC is just lousy. You will have a LOT more fun if you just call up homies and start fights with enemy gangs. Get mods to repopulate the streets if you chose so poorly as to 100% the game.

I know it is too late to warn people off but, seriously NOTHING in the Season Pass DLC is worth the money. Literally, you will have more fun with the cosmetic crap.
They're all missions from what I can tell, so are they pretty crappy as far as that goes? What makes them so terrible?

I'm honestly asking by the way, since I have it sitting in my inventory if I decide I don't really want it.
also for a tip there:
avoid DAO vanilla. Ultimate or bust.

just that it's... really been this price before, or packed with DA2 for $10 recently.
Was this on Steam or just Origin?

Because I don't think DA2 is on steam anymore...

Thief is like a stealth Action game - REALLY REALLY GOOD. Highly recommended.

Google showed it as a PCDD amazon deal like late June. Im assuming thats correct as I missed it.
It's far more tactical with mouse and keyboard and you can basically map any/all skills to the hotbar. (I still wish that you could plug-in a pad and have it switch to the clunky console UI though)

edit: Also the camera can be zoomed-out in order to give you a far better view of the battlefield.

i think i'll try it for 5 dollars, thanks! :D

Amazon sold the double pack for $10 a while ago. I am pretty sure that is what he is referring to.

Does the dlc for dragon age origins add significant content to the game? I'm trying to decide between getting the standard or ultimate edition. I only want the ultimate edition if the dlc is actually good in the first place so any advice on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

So, this is kind of OT but I just noticed that about $40 of the $60 dollars I have spent since the sale started has been put back into my bank account. The transactions are no longer listed either. Has anyone ever come across anything like this?

Ultimate comes with Awakenings, which is pretty much an entirely new game (it's like a 30 hour expansion).

So yeah.

Get Ultimate.

So I drilled down the RPG offerings by metacritic and saw a game Ive never even heard of... the Longest Journey. Time frame puts me out of gaming then but Im kinda surprised I never even heard of it. Thoughts? Metacritic ballot stuffer? 91 seems too high for me to be unaware of it.

I never finished it, but it really was quite the gem for me. I bought it about 5-6 years ago on clearance in a jewel case at Target.

edit: I think i've seen it go as low as 2.49 before IIRC and probably will again eventually.

The cricket wasn't my fault! Blame Bigspoonybard for 'gifting' it to me and Flowette for pointing out that monstrousity existed in the first place.

Then again, the sale is not done...

I have my eye on that Mumbo Jumbo pack for one. :D
....uh.... okay, that's not even a matter of Amazon getting the first strike by a couple weeks. pretty sure i've seen Ultimate for $5 a couple times during the year, not including the dual pack. that's just plain not coming close to your competitor's level.
Some people will pay a bit of a premium for getting something on Steam. I will.

Also consider it's EA and they might not necessarily want to give their super bests EVAR deals to their bloodsworn mortal enemy aka the Target of games.
just curious how do the controls on the pc for dragon age origins fare against its console counterparts?
Um, 1000x better? Seriously, it was made for the PC. As opposed to that abortion of a sequel which we won't talk about.

The expansion does. A lot of the others shamelessly re-use the hell out of areas and are meh. The Stone prisoner was a day 1 DLC surgically removed from the base so that really is necessary imo. The Fort is helpful to stash stuff, Return to Ostargar gives a little closure on one character but is otherwise fairly meh. Leiliana's song is stand alone, not part of the base. Witch Hunt is basically 99% filler that they stretched out into a game to show you the 30 seconds everyone really wanted to see. You're better off youtubing it.

The feast day stuff are pretty much cheats.

Anyway, DLC is a mixed bag but I think the expansion alone warrants the extra $2.50 IMO.

Also keep in mind, and I believe it's still like this, the DLC will phone home to EA to verify and once you create a save with the DLC installed you won't be able to play unless the DLC is verified. I had a problem once some time ago where it wouldn't let me play my games because EA's servers were messed up and wouldn't verify the DLC I owned. I've heard some people say you can run it offline but I didn't have any luck at that time. I don't know why they don't turn that crap off. No one buys the DLC separate anymore. Everyone who gets it now is from the Ultimate Edition.

So TL;DR yes get ultimate mostly for the expansion and maybe some of the other dlc which are just okay but don't expect them all to be amazing.

one of the dlc for dragon age is amazing.(awakening). the others are very short(one of them is a golem, shale, one is a return to a previous area to wrap up storyline, but awakening is definitely worth the extra $2.50

Only point and click adventure game I've ever played, so I'm not familiar with the genre- that said, I enjoyed it. The story was good. The heroine could be somewhat annoying, but all late teens/early twenties people are annoying to me. The only thing I disliked was the pacing, but I'd assume all adventure games have slow pacing. I played it about a year ago.

DragonAge 2 was pulled when the first extra content was released as an Origin exclusive, a violation of Steam's terms for publishers, which was mid-2011.

Not really an RPG, it's more of an adventure game. It's very highly regarded and often considered to be one of the best adventure games ever. DLC. EA insisted you had to buy it from them and only them. Valve says if you want to sell the game through them you have to make the DLC available through them.

That's right. It's pretty sad when something an entire year ago seems like it "wasn't too long ago".

The people who are saying to wait for Sins: Rebellion ar forgetting something. It is MUCH easier to get your friends to spend $5 now on the base game plus two expansions in order to get some sweet comp stomps going on.

Fot instance, me and a couple of buddies bought Sins back when it came out. We only played one or two comp-stomps a year and they never got around to buying the expansions. So this is the perfect opportunity for us to get the expansions and base game and uninstall Impulse for good.

The Genki pack is just activities. There are two more Genki shooter levels, at least two horrible escort missions, and two actually unique "Ride a giant yarn ball to crush things" mayhem score mission. I was sick of that stuff in the main campaign.

Gangsters In Space is somehow even more tonally retarded than the Genki stuff if you at all care about story but basically it boils down to two really forgettable shooter missions and then one more VTOL mission which is the same as all the others. Just lock on and wreck every enemy.

Trouble With Clones is, again, three missions. None of them fun. Just drive here, shootout here, drive there, shootout there, all with a heavy, heavy dose of lol randumb. Briefly, you get superpowers, super speed, instagib punches. You don't get to keep them or use them outside of the mission. The pack is just that lol randumb.

I just didn't have fun with any of these. Your time would really be better spent either replaying story missions or just duking it out with the gangs in survival missions or just starting fights.

RE: Longest Journey - It's a very well known adventure game, but not an RPG. It was a big deal back then but being PC only and done by a relatively unknown team, didn't attract as much mainstream attention as it should have - but for a while it was the last great adventure game.

Rolling Skull hates SR3 since it's inferior in every way to SR2, so take that into account. If you, however, like the main game well enough, chances are you'll appreciate the extra hour or two you get out of the Season Pass. Also, be glad you didn't buy it for full price.

It's got a refreshingly mature storyline. They did a sequel, Dreamfall, which had a 3-protagonist revolving narrative, including the girl from the original but it ended on a quasi-cliffhanger and had fans clamoring for more. It also had some unfortunate stealth and combat sequences. The guy behind them, Ragnar Tornquist, is now doing that EA MMO The Secret World, go figure.

There is also a sequel to this game called Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. This one was also available on the OG Xbox. I own both games on Steam and on CDs (yup CDs not DVDs, via Goozex). Sadly, they are both backlogged so I cant give you a review. But everything I've read about them, particularly Dreamfall, has me really interested. Just need to find the time to play them.

Well, relatively unknown back then.

Funcom has recently developed Age of Conan MMO and The Secret World MMO.

I highly reccommend every adventure gamer goes and plays both The Longest Journey and Dreamfall (AKA The Longest Journey 2). TLJ is great, meanwhile Dreamfall was pretty good.
Now, if only we can convince Funcom to make TLJ 3....
