CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Oy. Finally updated the OP. I was a bit behind!

And yeah today's deals are quite lackluster. The inclusion of Flash and Community Sales really are ruining the surprise of the Daily Deals...
ha, the sad part is if you use multiple DD services you'll start thinking about buying games on one site forgetting you already own it somewhere else (Sadly this has already happened to me). Also, I wish steam would have done daily achievements or something like the coal thing to motivate me to play some of these games.
I swear they mentioned that activities would be coming, but the sale is almost over and there hasn't been another word about it.

EDIT: Yeah, Day 3 said this, "Steam Scouts, we also have some fun activities scheduled - don't forget to earn your badges (and check out your existing ones)."

Whelp, I started out the week thinking I already owned everything that I wanted. At this point, I've purchased 14 games at a total cost of $60.00.

Only three more days... I might make it out of this under a $100.00
Man, this is a pretty poor sale. I bought a few games, but for the past two days or so, I've just been seeing the same games over and over, and I expect it will be that way for the rest of the sale.
Yeah, this sale is a bit meh since nothing for me was really that special. I think a lot of us has gotten used to 75% off as a normal thing so if we see 75%, then that's just a normal sale price, nothing special.

So far, I've bought 0 items from the Steam sale, but I did do all my voting and am only missing 2 of the things in my Summer Sale Badge. Does anyone know what you get for completing it? It may be hard since that means I'd have to actually buy something in the end. :) Maybe there's some DLC filler.

I think they should have made the community voting item on sale up to 80%. At least that's a price approaching the upper limit. I've seen 90% before as well, but that's really rare. At present, you see something not win the vote, but get 75% anyways on a flash/daily so it's been sorta pointless.

My backlog is big enough to not buy anything but wouldn't mind some old classics that I might play a little when time permits. Hoping the Freedom Force collection goes 75% off.

Well, the problem is, after a while you own most of what you want on Steam. For many of these games, there is a floor where they aren't going to go any lower and if your buy threshold is lower than that, then you won't ever be satisfied.

I've been buying less, mostly because there is less that I really want. Also, indie bundles have cut into how much I buy, since they end up being better deals.

Tried to buying Fallout New Vegas ultimate but steam says I already own it, which I don't by the way, I only have the base game. I'm only interested in the DLC but is cheaper to buy the Ultimate Edition($9.99) than the DLC ($11.44) itself. Steam only gives me the option to buy as gift, I guess that's okay I'll just put it in my steam inventory and then add it to my library from there.

Very true, I suppose my problem has to do more with time since I rarely get time to play. I'm probably not their ideal customer since I have a very small gaming collection, but with so little time, I can pretty much wait for things to keep the 75% discount and still wait for the original item to drop in price from 39.99 to 19.99 (here's looking at you Witcher 2 since I still have to play Witcher 1 first).

Some stuff I wouldn't mind buying like Shogun 2, but a part of me feels like waiting for some ultimate pack and in a year or 2 and just get it then. Sorta nice I suppose to not really be in a rush to buy.

If my pc meets the minimum for alan wake american nightmare but not the recommended will it really hurt my gameplay experience? The only thing that's not up to par is my cpu. I'd like to get it so cheap through steam cause xbox on sale will probably be 10 bucks.
Maybe I'm slow today, but what is WAI?
Working As Intended; Gabe doesn't really care why you buy games or even which games you buy, just as long as you're giving him your sweet, sweet virtual currency.
Thanks for this.

I already have the Witcher 1 on GOG, and apparently it lowers the price of the bundle if you already have it.

So it's $13.59 for me on GOG and $15.99 on Steam. Not a huge savings but what's rational is rational.
I would rather spend $2 more and get both a Steam and GOG copy though...

I've played some of the games I got during this sale, mainly QUBE (Which is pretty damn good imo). But I just got into a certain games closed beta last night and will spend the foreseeable future playing that game for a long time to come.

Ah, well yes, obviously. I just hope with all the competition they realize they can't put on half assed sales and expect people to buy anyways.

I don't really see the point of that.

I enjoy having it all organized with Steam. I prefer to have all of my games on Steam plus the use of Steam Cloud.

Then as a bonus with the Steam version you can still redeem it and get a backup GOG copy just for good measure.

Just personal preference I suppose.

Well, yes, but every time you double-dip an angel of cheapassery has its wings cast in bronze.
I've played a bit of Alice: Madness Returns. Decided it might work better with a controller (or maybe the keys need to be remapped.)
It does feel better with a controller. FYI when it shows you some of the buttons you need to know (like blocking/repelling a bomb) in the in-game tutorial, they show as the keyboard buttons rather than what it's mapped to on the controller, leaving you to guess until you get it right.
I don't really see the point of that.
If you ever tried to patch the GOG version of Witcher 2 you would.

Also some people just prefer to have games on Steam. I do and will pay a little more for it at times. This game actually does have the extra Steamworks features too like cloud save and achievements so there is a difference besides even just a less stress inducing patching method.

I respect your personal video games preferences to the extent the law requires, but for me I can simply add the shortcut to Steam and forego all the Cloud stuff. All the Steam extras have zero value to me. I'm in it for the lowest price.

ok, I have to go sleep, so I'm just about to buy the TLJ bundle instead of just TLJ. Any last minute "Don't do it!"s or "Just get TLJ"s?

Mostly I'm still trying to negotiate whether Dreamfall's worth that extra 4 bucks, which isn't a lot, but isn't 2.50. LOL

ETA: And also, it might be months before I would be playing Dreamfall, since it's the second of the two. Should I just put that whole bundle on hold for the winter/holiday sale instead? I just figured since it's already an old game, the price won't change too much (unlike newer games where the prices fall more dramatically).

I'm in a similar position, tho I end up playing a decent percentage of my Steam collection because much of it isn't huge on gameplay time or are things that are casual enough that I can pick it up or drop it at will. I think I can count on my fingers the games I've spent more than 10 hours playing.

Although the sale feels kinda disappointing, when I think about it I got good prices on virtually everything I was looking to buy (no Amalur DLC!) and a few things I hadn't planned on. Pretty good sale, it's just frustrating to look forward to a nice surprise only to see so many repeats.

My thoughts exactly.

Welp. Jurassic Park and Krater put me at 102 dollars. I was rather hoping I wouldn't cross into triple digits...
Nexuiz is pretty cool. I played a bit when it was free. The WTF for it is really good at giving you background on the game and the gameplay. It is fun, has some balance issues, but looks great. The reason so many people diss it is:

1. It used to be free so how dare anyone want to get paid for a good game when they used to give it away for free.

2. One of the devs of the free version did something some people consider shady and put it up for sale somehow. Obviously, legally he is fine since it is up for sale on steam, but a ton of people who worked and contributed to the free version were soured by this since they felt it should have been a perpetual community free game.

As far as the sales, yeah - they suck. Period. Not suck in the "oh these games or prices are bad" - but in the "we're not discounting all the games as much this year as we did last year, we're using the flash sales as an excuse, but we're repeating them as dailies and community deals too so our excuse is really a BS way to keep prices higher."

Their sale is only working in the sense it is wearing me down and I might buy stuff just because nothing I want has gone on a good sale. (Dead Hungry Diner I'm looking at you).
That's too expensive at $6. Wait until it hits 75% off.

Well to me the sale was great with just Jade Empire (should have waited but was really excited) and Walking Dead! Want to play both immediately and it seems like I've waited for Jade Empire forever. Other than that I'm getting Borderlands 2 in September and I'm a Battlefield premium member on top of the Android/XBOX/PS3/Steam backlog that stares at me everyday I'm good.
This needs to go on sale on steam
:applause: The only good thing about it not being on steam I am not tempted to buy it. I mean did you see that brutal forklift vs forklift underground fight club

Despite the fact that I'm a bit disappointed about all of the repeats/familiar deals, I will say I've managed to push the PURCHASE button quite a few times.

 • Deals I've been waiting quite a while to see: Trine 2, Street Fighter IV: AE, Dead Rising 2 OTR, and Alan Wake American Nightmare
 • Games I was mildly interested in upon release, but now the price was right: Toy Soldiers, Vessel, Stacking, QUBE, and Shoot Many Robots
 • Some I just hadn't considered until highlighted by the sale: The Longest Journey + Dreamfall, From Dust, Might and Magic Clash of Heroes, and Spellforce 2 Gold
 • Older games I've been wanting to try/wanting on Steam: Thief 2, Prince of Persia, POP Forgotten Sands, STALKER Clear Sky/Pripyat, and FEAR 3
 • And then a crap ton of DLC for games like Batman AC, Dungeon Defenders, Saint's Row 3, Serious Sam TSE, Shogun 2

I've got a bunch of games on Steam too and this isn't my first sale by a long shot. So while I was disappointed that there weren't more, I sure didn't let it get in the way of finding a few good deals.

I'm one of those that thinks there still may be some kind of activity since it was mentioned in one of the announcements. But if not I've still got a bunch of stuff to play.
I possibly take back this statement. I see the Witcher 1 is on sale. I think I read this does not work with Windows 7. I can google to confirm, but anyone have any experience with this?
Ok, found an answer for my own question. They released a patch (1.5) that enables it to work with windows 7.

I'm really enjoying Dungeon Defenders at the moment, I really regret not getting the complete collection.

I hope they put it back on sale again since everything else seems to be going up there a few times, so I can at least get some dlc.
steamprices.com says the lowest Morrowind been is $10. I would have scooped it up in a heartbeat at $5.

Edit: Oh, they don't go back to early 2010. Nevermind. Still, that's a long time with no -75% for such an old game.
Ya it was 5 dollars. I did a lot of research before I decided to hold out for a sale. The disks haven't dropped below 15 or so and it's not dropped below 10 on steam since early 2010.
Is this is a good deal on Witcher 2, or would I be better off waiting since I haven't played the first one yet?
In the same boat and I would wait it will inevitably be cheaper this year.
Anyone needs a vote?

Dead Island
Shogun
Space Marine
Shogun so it's stand alone DLC goes on sale for 75% off.
Ok, found an answer for my own question. They released a patch (1.5) that enables it to work with windows 7.
I can attest that it works fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I play my games on steam but get the extras from gog.

Can someone PM me that has a steam screenshot and won´t mind me commenting generically on it? I am trying to finish up the community badge just in case Steam runs some silly promotion at the end of the sale.
Left 4 dead 1 or left 4 dead 2? I dont know if i should get both, or just one. what do you guys think?
Just get 2. All of the campaigns and characters from 1 have been imported into 2 anyway.
Left 4 dead 1 or left 4 dead 2? I dont know if i should get both, or just one. what do you guys think?
both. they are both good games (though similar) and it's not that much more to get the other game now.

re: Witcher 1
I can attest that it works fine on my Windows 7 machine.
Me too. I plauyed through the entire game on Windows 7.

On whether it's necessary for Witcher 2 though, not really. Some of the choices carry over but the differences are really minor.

The story itself is completely separate. Besides, even Witcher 1 isn't the beginning. If you really need to have all the background then you have to read the novels for that, but honestly I think 2 should play fine without any prior experience.

Although I actually kind of prefer the first game myself, I think most mainstream gamers will appreciate the second one more because the combat is more action oriented as opposed to timing chain attacks.
