CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Warning: the KQ collection, while amazing, is a pain in the a$$ to run on Windows 7. I think there are fixes out for it, but yeah, there's tons of glitchiness there, sadly..
Botanicula is a good game that has a lot of charm to it. The world is really interesting and it is fun exploring each screen thoroughly just to see what happens and how things react to you. I thought the first half was better but I enjoyed the game overall.
Thanks for the info. Decided to pass on it. I figure I can wait, even at this price--heck, I haven't even played Machinarium or Samorost yet, so at this point I'd probably just be getting it for the sake of collecting and unlike some others here, I try to avoid doing that sort of thing.

Looking at walking dead, is it different from telltales Jurassic Park? Or is it just more quick time events? Also voted for Last remnant.

Smart way to be. I own 352 games according to CAG, but I've only finished 166 of them. I've got a lot of money just sitting on a shelf waiting for me to get around to it.

i never owned any game from telltale games before and im love with the walking dead, is amazing, i dont think the game has quick time events, i mean once in a while you have to press a button rapidly to avoid something but its not like a god of war game where you have be on the look out for a combination of buttons on a matter of seconds, what really drags you in are the characters, seriously, amazing, amazing game, voted for splinter cell

It is similar to JP, just like all of Telltale's adventure games are. That said, it's a refinement of it, and the story and dialogue are much more consistent and interesting. There is more exploring and less tense-button-pushing moments though.

But I enjoyed both, so I may be a bad judge of character.

I wish I'd finished 166 of my Steam library...

Alas. I'm just not that committed to the endeavor. I do enjoy the ones I play though, so I'm not complaining. ;)

Why am I seeing a few CAG friends buying the whole Amanita bundle? Do people really not have Machanarium at this point? It has been in multiple bundles. It's not like you save anything buying the bundle vs just getting Bontanicula or Bontanicula and Samrost.
Has nobody mentioned that Last Remnant's price is inflated? It's 30 bucks on Steam, but 15 most other places, including GreenmanGaming and Gamersgate. In fact, you can get TLR for 9 dollars right now, and 7 dollars if you have one of their 20 percent vouchers, which puts the game cheaper than it would be if it won the vote. Comes with a Steam key everywhere you buy.
I am glad someone mentioned this. Thank you. Steam has not lowered the MSRP yet so even at 75% off it's not a good deal. Get it at GMG @40% off $14.99 and use the code COSYO-UDIDN-TGET1 for an extra 20% off or if you don't mind waiting Gamersgate also has it for for $14.99 and I'm sure it will go on sale there sooner or later. Plus some people have the IGN discount and like the coins there etc.
Has anyone played through "The Witcher"? I've heard great things about it, but is it worth getting over "Portal 2" (which I already beat on Xbox)?
Well they are very different games but I like them both. One is an RPG and the other is sort of a puzzle game in a 3D world space.

To expand on The Witcher (the first game) if you like story and characters, choice and consequence etc it is good for that. The combat can take some getting used to, particularly for console gamers and people used to straight up action games, but once you get the hang of it I didn't think it was so bad and rather liked it actually. Then again I suck at action games normally so the chain thing worked for me. YMMV.

Voted for conviction. The only issue I see is that it says it won't run on Mac OS 10.7 :( I am guessing this won't run on 10.7.4, either?

Either way, I just picked up Botanicula as well. I was hoping for the option to purchase the soundtrack but it looks like a no go.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing with Machinarium. It's already been in a million indie bundles, I'd be surprised if there's anyone that doesn't have it by now.

The Last Remnant has been 50% off of $15 at GamersGate a few weeks ago. I got it for $5 after blue coins + IGN discount. I agree that Steam should change the MSRP.

Searched Amazon for physical copy of ArmA II, saw this on the 5th result:

Thanks, worse case scenario if I get them; use Windows XP Mode or some other virtual OS.

The Walking Dead is mostly about story and light puzzle-solving. There are some QTEs thrown in but not many. I think Episode 2 had maybe five altogether. You're basically guiding the main character, Lee Everett, in the very recent aftermath of the outbreak. Like the television show, the game is set in Georgia and centers on the trials of a small group of survivors in the wake of the zombpocalypse. Decisions that you make in the game in terms of supporting certain characters (and in some cases choosing whether one or another lives or dies) are remembered by the NPCs and can have an impact on how the game unfolds. On the whole, I highly recommend it, although I haven't yet played JP, so I don't have a frame of reference for comparison.

Also, if this sort of thing is of interest to you, the achievements (so far) are all story-based, so you'll 100% it just by finishing the game.

You know I actually preferred the combat system in the original game to the "refinements" made in TW2. I though the whole timing-based combo thing was a refreshing change of pace, at least for PC games. However, even in the patched sequel it's still tough for Geralt to take on more than three or four enemies at the same time (at least in my builds, which are heavily sword-based with a wee bit of magic, mostly the Quen sign).

Give away. This steam sale is taking a toll on my wallet. I'm waiting for Killing Floor to go onsale soon, since it lost in the poll.
It'll happen, sooner or later. KF goes on sale pretty often and seems to be very popular with the MP shooter crowd. If you're patient you'll probably find an 80% sale at some point during the year.
It's my birthday. That means Steam has to provide super awesome deals just for me.

Liiiiike, Sims franchise 75% off!

Happy birthday! 75% off everything you bought for 66% off in the past year!

Bought so far:

Alan Wake's American Nightmare
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
Civilization V
The Witcher 1

Gift:

Killing Floor Bundle

I'm also hoping Clash of Heroes goes on sale again. I missed it the first time.
Has anyone played through "The Witcher"? I've heard great things about it, but is it worth getting over "Portal 2" (which I already beat on Xbox)?
I love the Witcher 2. It's got great balance. Great voice acting. And the plot and sidequests are top notch.

I'm playing The Witcher at the same time. So far the game reminds me a lot of Neverwinter Nights, but with better combat and camera angles. Overall, it's a strong game. Not as strong as Witcher 2, but still worth playing. And at $2.50 it is a steal which is the lowest price you will see for it. Portal 2 will go down again in the future. If you can wait, that game should be $2.50 by the next Summer Sale.

Argh. Not Safe For Work.
Yea, that's one of the lesser known expansion packs. You have to walk for 10 minutes before you get to any of the action, though.
I've only seen The Sims really go on sale once, maybe twice. Should of grabbed it then when that Katy Perry junk released.

Man, I felt for sure that The Last Remnant would be the game that everybody would be voting for and asking others to vote for. Looking back through the past few pages though, I only see one poster saying that he was gonna vote for it. If the sentiments of this board are any indication of the voting public, Last Remnant is gonna come in a distant third.

This is a shame. If it were to win, it would be the cheapest that it's ever been. It's not really on my shopping list for this sale, but at 75% off, I'd have to buy.

I wouldn't concern myself too much over the vote results if this were a few days ago. Because back then, I was convinced that every game that appeared in the customer vote or as a flash sale would eventually end up as a daily deal. But we've only got 3 days left of the sale. That's 24 more daily deals. There are too many games that haven't been dailies yet for them all to get the daily deal treatment. Looks like some of these games will only be a flash/vote deals.

EDIT: Somebody else voted for LR while I was typing this up. So that makes 3 of us. :(
I've only seen The Sims really go on sale once, maybe twice. Should of grabbed it then when that Katy Perry junk released.
Yeah I went totally nuts on that sale and grabbed almost everything except the Master Suite stuff which was new and didn't have much of a discount at the time. I may just break down and grab it at 50% the last day if it doesn't go on a better sale but I'd still rather have it 75% off.

I really wish EA would get the hell over themselves and let people buy their games where ever they want. I realize they are not getting 100% of the profit if people don't buy it on Origin and that doesn't fit their greedy agenda, but I already spent a good bit of money on their stuff on Steam and will continue to do so if they continue to make it available. I'm not doing Origin though other than to register Steam games there. That's my choice.

I fear that I'm in the minority though and that eventually they will just wear everyone down and force everyone to go to them so they can get 100% of the profits with no overhead or middleman and not pass the savings along to the consumer.

PSST. It's cheaper on GMG now than the 75% off on Steam will make it and you can stack with a 20% off code and maybe even store credit from trade-ins if you have it.

The Last Remnant is slightly cheaper on greenmangaming with the 20% off voucher (and I think there's a universal code for that, so anyone can use it). No reason to buy it from Steam unless you have problems with greenmangamings payment issues.
Make that 4 End, although i already own it I wanted others to have the chance to afford Last Remnant.
Thanks man. Maybe there's still hope.

I wasn't aware of that. However, as you alluded to, there are issues with payment security which has prevented me from buying there in the past. I don't think I'd wanna trust them with my credit card info.

Is it true that they don't accept Paypal?

They do accept paypal. I've only made one purchase from them (with paypal), haven't had any issues with them yet. I personally got The Last Remnant from GamersGate back when they had it for $7.50.

Oh for some reason I thought they didn't accept paypal. I guess I've been needlessly avoiding them in the past.

Well that's good to know then. If LR doesn't win the vote, I'll head on over to GMG. I know GMG is about $0.30 cheaper than the steam price would be if it wins, but I'd rather pay the extra $0.30 for the ability to store it in my inventory until I'm ready to play it. It's good to have a fallback option though.

Thanks Sunghost.

Picked up Terraria last night and I have Fallout:NV Ultimate Ed. sitting in the cart to buy at some point during the day.

Here's to hoping Jade Empire and Shogun 2 show up in the flash deals today. Otherwise I think I'm done for this sale and I'm still under $50 as of now.

Just because you activate a product from a source outside of Steam it doesn't mean you have to download it instantly.

The point of keeping it in his inventory is probably for gifting or resell purposes, not downloading.

That, I did not consider.
Just because you activate a product from a source outside of Steam it doesn't mean you have to download it instantly.
Oh yeah, I know. It's just that I've taken to only activating games when I'm ready to play them. I've only activated 7 or 8 games over the past 6 months. I do this because once a game is activated, it's on my library forever. If I don't activate it, I could always trade the game for something else if I decide that I really don't want it after all.

EDIT: Did you just add an avatar, fastitocalon? I could swear you didn't have one a minute ago. Or maybe the page didn't load properly for me before.
