CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
Publisher packs don't hit daily deals or anything like that. One thing to consider is that Quakecon is coming up, and Steam generally puts a truly complete pack together with all id/Bethesda games along with other related pack sales. If all you want is New Vegas, pick it up. But if you're interested in the whole back catalog, you might get a better package in a couple weeks. Worst case scenario, you wait until the winter sale for the publisher packs to come back.
I'm kind of starting to think the truly complete publisher pack gravy train has dried up at this point. There were a bunch last summer sale while few truly complete ones this year. I think only maybe the Popcap and the Mumbo Jumbo ones are. The rest I saw were definitely not.
Anyone ever play the Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony game that's part of today's Indie Bundle? Been looking for a good Shmup on Steam.
Jamestown is a really solid shmup. The DLC ships are fun as well.

It's probably my favorite shmup on steam. Difficulty is just right, and there's plenty of types of ships to play as. Also supports local coop.

Today's indie bundle I'd say is the best overall so far, most of the games are great, though I already have them all and $10 is still pretty high considering all the indie bundles popping up.

Unpossible! They're supposed to be there when I strike it rich so I can get everything on Steam in four clicks.

Nothing for me today. Am I wrong, or has all but the Indie Day IX been a flash deal already? Not that I mind.

Six hours left to put in for Nuclear Dawn.

caved in for arma 2, but still have $37 steam wallet left, now i can wait for bully, jade empire and star wars: republic commando to go on sale
Hey i would like to get more friends on steam. Feel free to add me,

I'm starting to wonder if this is really a person or just some spambot seen in other forums or something. I'm all for adding CAG's but give it a rest already.
I guess there's also that whole 'Big Fish is for girls and Steam is for boys and never the two shall meet' sort of thing too. I don't mean 100% of the time of course, but there is a perception that the casual crowd is female and doesn't hang out at Steam and that the hardcore crowd is male and does.
There have been times I have been tempted by Big Fish's stuff. (Royal Envoy, in particular.) I also know a guy who's been doing a lot of heavy exporing of hidden object games.

While I think there's a lot of me too-ism among the casual and mobile games, there's some decent stuff too. I think there's gotten to be some hidden gems among the casual stuff and the line between casual and indie is kind of blurry. Even Amazon has some stuff most would consider 'indie' under 'casual'.

That's more of a perception issue. Popcap is hardly an "indie" anymore. While these games don't have the budgets of the games that are typically on Steam, it doesn't mean that they aren't a big deal in their genre. Course, the definition of 'indie' is pretty blurred in general.

Anyway, kind of going off on a tangent, but my point is I think there are games out there that all of us would like but don't know about but the problem is finding them. It does seem like the same few devs get in indie or Steam bundles or get coverage on blogs like RPS over and over but the rest don't.

I don't know if we are missing all that many. I certainly disagree about covering the same devs. Vessel's Strange Loop Games is a new company and they had no problem getting coverage. If a game isn't getting coverage, it is probably because they aren't doing the right things marketing-wise to get the word out.

I felt nuts for doing it at the time, and who am I kidding I am nuts for doing it, but I'm actually glad I grabbed a few complete publisher packs last year.

I had been holding off getting anything THQ thinking I would get their complete pack this go round but then they go and pull some crap where you just get the 'greatest hits' with NO DLC or you can get all the Dawn of War with all the DLC which is actually $10 more than the Not At All Complete THQ pack and the Space Marine pack which is almost as much as the Not At All Complete THQ pack and then there's the Saint's Row 3 complete pack and then of course you'd still have to buy all the older and smaller releases etc etc.

Yeah, I'll pass.

Mumbo Jumbo pack keeps calling to me though...
Anyone played Deep Black: Reloaded?
http://store.steampowered.com/app/204760/
Wow, what an interesting concept. Looks pretty cool but I am skeptical. I guess there's a reason the Steam store doesn't link to Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/deep-black-reloaded 39/100
Is splinter cell deluxe edition worth the extra 1.25? If this question has been asked before then I apologize.

No, the infiltration mode is unlockable in the standard edition via Uplay points so the only thing you're really getting are 3 guns and some armor.

This is my first steam sale and I can't believe how incredible it is. People weren't lying when they said wait for the summer steam sales. The amount of quality games you can get for almost nothing is ridiculous. You could never find enough time to get through a backlog after spending an extremely modest amount of money over the course of a sale.

Hm. Maybe, but I think it's valid to say that we're seeing a lot of the same games from the same publishers ad nauseam in this sale. I just think there are a lot of niche games out there (like some of the ones Motoki's promoting) along with things like Spectromancer and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! that are not promoted too often. One thing I do like about this sale is the promotions that Steam has reached out to F2P developers to create particularly for the sale. I'd like to see more of that kind of cross-promotion, even though I didn't end up biting on any of them to date.

One more quick question. The F.E.A.R. Collection was a flash deal I missed for $9.99, and now it's a daily deal for $13.xx.

Chances are that's the cheapest it's going to get again in this sale, correct?

Yea, doesn't seem worth it. Strongly considering the dlc...but I'm primarily interested in single player. Thanks for the reply though.

I was looking into Jamestown...however none of the other games seems interesting for me.

Yep. Historically speaking after a game's price is corrected, it stays up.

I got the impression that you could play the DLC solo.

Hah, welcome, welcome! Yeah, it's pretty incredible, isn't it? I've been through every single Steam sale since the start, and despite spending maybe the cost of one new game per sale, I always walk away with a ton of content. All these 75% off deals in a row are crazy.

I've picked up pretty much everything I wanted in this sale, and a few I didn't know I wanted until I saw it. (always happens) incredibly satisfied. :applause:

FarCry 2
Driver: San Francisco - Deluxe Edition
Metro 2033
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
Fallout New Vegas Ultimate
Trine 2
Worms Reloaded - GOTY
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
Deus Ex: Human Revolution + The Missing Link DLC

People often say that PC is more expensive than a 360 or PS3 but when you factor in Steam sales, and the value of having a very fucking good PC for more than just gaming (applications, everything), the price is actually about the same or less. Hell about a month or so ago I sold my PS3 copy of Driver San Fran for literally like $13-14 almost double of what it's on Steam for right now (paid $16 for the PS3 copy, and I haven't beaten the game so it's why I am probably going to rebuy it).
The Stars are Left probably is, it's more of a full chapter / adventure. The rest are, in my opinion, skippable. Vietnam, for example, is more or less a single map. It sounds like Other Side of the Coin is too, which is regrettable.

Depends on how much you like Challenge Maps, I guess. I liked the story mode.
Only skip Vietnam if you don't like napalm airstrikes and mowing down goblins with an M60.

Welcome to the club. If I played a whole game a day for an entire year I wouldn't finish all my games on Steam.

Does Red Orchestra 2 have any single-player? I remember reading somewhere that the bots and so on were really bad. Any recommendation on that game?

The highest off for packs is usually 75% off, sometimes 80% off and if it is anything higher than that and you want the games you should just buy it right away. So doubt that FEAR Collection will be $10 again

Thanks mainly interested in the DLC, but the only DLC for Magicka & Dungeon Defenders that are worth getting (in order are) if you decide

Magicka
The Stars are Left
Vietnam
The Other Side of the Coin

Dungeon Defender
Lost Eternia Shards Complete
New Heroes DLC
Summoner Hero
Maps are up to you
Series EV Hero
Barbarian Hero

So I know dungeon defenders goes on sale a lot ( today is like the 4th or 5th time this week) but is the complete pack with all DLC for $12 really worth it? Seems like mostly costumes and crap I could care less about. I think I'd rather just get the game and then buy the extra missions DLC. I keep skipping this game but I might just bite.
Glad you're enjoying yourself. Sometimes this thread gets pretty negative and it's nice to remind people that for the first timers, all the sales are new.
I think that is the problem, to many people have bought many of the games they wanted last few sales, so now view this sale as a "fail" when really it's just there hasn't been a lot of games between Dec and July. and even those that have are actually discounted by least 25% off

Honestly I think this sale is amazing because if anything you can get a ton of older games easily for 75% and try new things you may never have considered before.

How does the DLC for Fallout and NV work if it's an additional storyline? Is it chosen from the main menu or seamlessly blended into the map and mission? I'm asking cause I want to play the original campaign and then go to the DLC.
VVVVVV is hard, but it makes up for it by having almost zero death animation or reload time. It's just a flash and you're trying it again. There are many collectibles that are insanely hard to reach places, but they aren't required and I was fine not being a completionist. The music is great, I really enjoyed the game, and it's just the right length.
Thanks for the info; sounds like a more manageable game than I thought.

Leaning more towards getting the bundle now, though again, I wouldn't mind hearing CAGs' thoughts on Capsized, Revenge of the Titans, and Zeno Clash (if any of you all have them).

Safe to skip IMO. You may want to pick up one or two of the mission DLCs if you find you enjoy the game, but as far as cosmetics and loot go, Trendy drops new DLC packs for this game at a ludicrous rate and many of them are free for a limited time (e.g., all of the "seasonal" packs).

Beyond getting recommendations from others I don't know that there is much else we can do. I guess you could buy a bunch of cheap games as a crap shoot and hope to get a least a couple of good ones but that's hardly the most efficient way.
Speaking of recommending, Cute Knight Deluxe is a absolute blast of a indie game I forgot about until l refound it last night. There is a demo avaiable on the authors site here(http://www.hanakogames.com/ckd.shtml) as well as you can even find it on amazon though 5$ more than it is sold digital direct from her site(http://www.amazon.com/Cute-Knight-Deluxe-Pc/dp/B000PI616Y)

Sadly the only game of her's on Steam is Magical Diary which I am waiting to get the last day of the sale so haven't played it yet to really say if it is amazing or not.

For NV, there will be "portals" in the base game. For OWB, it's an old movie theater you come across in the wasteland. In the case of that pack, you can only go back to the base game once you've completed the DLC story.

Revenge of the Titans is a tower defense game. I haven't played much of it but your enjoyment will be if you like tower defense games. Zeno Clash is a first person brawling game. It takes place in prehistoric times and is very weird and out there. It's a short game as I bet it in two and a half hours but I loved it.

You can try the demo for Capsized on steam. It reminds me of Metal Slug, a side scrolling shooter.

Thanks! Good to know. Think I'll just stick with the base game and take it from there depending on how much i play. Especially now with the backlog I have thanks to the summer sale.

VVVVVV is not offensively hard. It is charming and clever. A couple of rooms are major brick walls (Not As I Do, Veni Vidi Vici), but for the most part it is just a fun game.

Jamestown is great as far as shumps go
Probably the best on Steam. Gundemonium and Satazius are also great.

Conviction Deluxe Edition isn't really worth it. The DLC is though. Even in solo the maps are fun but they are for the "Take out all the guards randomly placed" mode. No campaign.

Wow, looks like Ubisoft never actually patched always-online DRM out of Splinter Cell Conviction, contrary to all the press articles reporting they did. Unless my game somehow isn't up to date. I can't find any way to further patch it, it said "downloading game files" the first time I started Uplay launcher. I'm kinda pissed off about this. I can't find a version number anywhere in the game or in properties of the .exe file.
