CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Well, I've made to the last day with $15 still in my Steam wallet. But no matter what terrible things I hear about Fable III... I still want it. And the Cyan pack. So that decision and today's deals will determine if I bite the bullet and make a final Paypal purchase.

Oh, hell, and then there are the nondailies I've been eyeing...

Jesus Christ, What the hell is going on. The flash sales was a great idea, but it's not a flash deal if it's they are there for a total of over 24 Hours. They could've at least, with the flash deal put some indie games on notice and put them on sale, but no, let's put dead island on sale for the 5th time.
Okay, late to the party so I might be repeating what others have suggested:

Ben There, Dan That & Time Gentlemen Please (Not the strongest on the list, but it's only a buck during the sale)
The Blackwell Games
Broken Sword Trilogy
Lucas Arts Pack (Dig and Loom are from the classic Lucas Arts days, if you enjoyed the original Monkey Islands)
Machinarium
Syberia (everyone's recommended this already)
Whispered World (in my backlog, but oh my god it's beautiful.)

Not on steam:

Out of Order
^ That entire list looks great, although I've only played Machinarium so far (which was awesome). If you like Machinarium, Samorost 2 and Botanicula were also made by the same dev. I played a bit of Samorost 2 and had fun with it, and just picked up Botanicula. Samorost 1 is also theirs of course, but it's non-Steam.

Man, they've repeated almost everything except Back to the Future for $6.24. Keeping my fingers crossed that one comes back. My one regret of the sale was passing on that.

Samorost isn't on steam, but it's free.
anyone brave enough to vote yet?
Nope. Wait until after 10 PST/1 EST so that you're voting the last "day."

I voted a couple of minutes ago and no luck as of yet. Should have waited till the day flipped over but, I am not worried since I can vote from my phone later.

Dammit, I didn't realize that. Will there be another vote for the last "day"? Or did I just screw myself out of that badge?
That's not true.

Look at the top sellers right now, you have to go to number 12 to see the first game recently released that people are buying.

As for big games? Out of the top sellers right now MAYBE 25% are big games.
You and I apparently have a different definition of what makes for a big game. To me, a big game is any game not made an indie dev and that people actually want. The only reason that the time since a game's release would come into play, is if it's so old that anybody who wants it, already has it. Take a look at the top 21 at the time of posting this.

ARMA II: Combined Operations
Batman Franchise
Batman: Arkham City
RAGE
Dawn of War Franchise Pack
Fable III Collection
Anno 2070 Collection
Universe Sandbox
Garry's Mod
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Prince of Persia Complete Pack
Sid Meier's Civilization V - Gods and Kings
Anno 2070
Evochron Mercenary
Age of Empires III: Complete Collection
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Torchlight
Bethesda Collection
Left 4 Dead 2
Quantum Conundrum

By my standard, only the following qualify as not being a big game.
Universe Sandbox
Garry's Mod
Evochron Mercenary
Torchlight
Quantum Conundrum
Dammit, I didn't realize that. Will there be another vote for the last "day"? Or did I just screw myself out of that badge?
I would bet my left testicle that there will be more community choice votes after this one. So you should have another chance. Probably two more chances.

I voted without thinking about it but I'm around this evening so I'll be hitting the evening vote anyway.

I had originally thought the badges might be good for something during the sale but that doesn't seem to be the case so I'm not too fussed either way.

No badge, i still haven't bought anything and was going to pick up KotoR (yeah, I don't have it yet!), but was busy working. Maybe I should have picked up a Crusader Kings DLC for 49 cents (75% off earlier) to fill out my badge "just in case" it gets you something like a 5% additional coupon.

I'm considering Garry's Mod...

I know it's a sandbox type of game, but I read somewhere that there are servers where you can play mini-games (like the prophunt, dodgeball, etc games on tf2 and counter-strike). Is that true? I'm not too good with sandbox games because I lose interest if I don't have any objectives to work toward, but an occasional random mini-game along the lines of prophunt or whatever could be fun.

EDIT: Also, Sideway is $3. I already have it on the PS3 thanks to PS+ ... is there any reason to double-dip or will I be fine just playing it on the PS3?

Hmm honestly at this point I'm not sure what to vote for. Mirror's Edge or Just Cause 2...I don't have either game but both look cool, I was thinking I might just pick up something random today just for the hell of it lol

Any suggestions on which would be more fun?

There should be a whole other day of voting. The sale ending today doesn't mean the sale ends on this day, but when the day ends, right? They specifically said "through July 22nd" not "ending July 22nd." So we still have 1 day of deals left... I hope they don't do the typical rehash thing.

BTW: Community & Flash sales generally sucked.

I think more people would say Just Cause 2 but honestly they're both worth getting. Just Cause 2 is just one big sandbox of fun and Mirror's Edge is unlike any FPS you've played before, both in style and mechanics.

I would like to try out Mirror's Edge again but not for $5, I played the demo on PS3 when it was new and wasn't that into it. I don't remember why, so I would give it another chance at a slightly cheaper price.
BTW: Community & Flash sales generally sucked.
Actually, most of my buys have been community and flash deals, so they haven't sucked for me. The only one that was a daily was Fortune Summoners.
I would like to try out Mirror's Edge again but not for $5, I played the demo on PS3 when it was new and wasn't that into it.
Well, you probably aren't going to, since it is unlikely to be less than $5, since it always goes on sale for that price.

Community and flash sales were fine I thought. They still have to cater to the people who either missed the daily deals or don't have quite an extensive collection. You can't please everybody.
Well, you probably aren't going to, since it is unlikely to be less than $5, since it always goes on sale for that price.
I can see that, been passing up $5 deals on it for a long time now.

I would say Mirror's Edge simply because it's an EA game and the only way you can get it on steam is to buy it through the steam store. Just Cause 2 however, is steamworks. So you can buy that anywhere and redeem it here.
Actually, most of my buys have been community and flash deals, so they haven't sucked for me. The only one that was a daily was Fortune Summoners.
I've bought a few more dailies than you, but I generally agree with you. The majority of my purchases have been flash\vote deals.
So today is the last day?

Sale went REALLY Bad after a couple days. Started AMAZING, but then just became rehashes. Would've loved to see BFBC2, Mass Effect 1 and 2, COD 4 and so many other games. Oh Well.

Is the Next sale the Christmas Sale or do they do one for Thanksgiving as well?
I wouldn't say it was bad. They did eventually put Arma II on sale and everyone and their grandmother has been chomping at the bit wanting to get that asking every 5 minutes when it was going on sale so that one being on sale is a big deal.

Also Oblivion went cheap along with Morrowind this time that hasn't been this cheap in years.

There was some stuff out there though obviously for people who have a lot and/or are only looking for a few specific things then most deals won't be for you.

Steam does do a Thanksgiving Autumn sale generally, yes, though much smaller in scope than the summer/winter ones. They also do other smaller sales sometimes like a Halloween one for horror themed games etc.
Pretty much this ^ The flash sales are a good idea, but were plagued by too much repetition.

On a semi-related note, still kicking myself that I missed the Unreal Deal Pack flash sale, but to be fair, it happened overnight and I was sleeping at the time  Hope it gets knocked back to that $9.99 sweet spot again today.
You just complained about the repetition of the flash sales then proceeded to express regret on missing a flash deal.

Think about that for a minute.

Not everyone is glued to their PC and/or mobile device hanging on every deal like we are. The repetition is more or less like an encore day but spread out. If sales are going to be offered for a limited window I would personally rather they be offered more than once just in case or others who want them happen to miss it the first go round.

Half already mentioned in a response, but DAMN YOU, I DON'T NEED TO GIVE STEAM MORE MONEY! WHY WOULD YOU LET ME KNOW THE DIG IS ON STEAM?!?!?! ISN'T HAVING A BOXED COPY + UNSTAINED STRATEGY GUIDE ENOUGH!!!???!?!

Also, yes to everyone asking about Garry's Mod. Its really fun and can be amazingly awesome if played correctly...but there is definitely a learning curve to it.
I'm considering Garry's Mod...

Zero reason to double dip on Sideway. The framerate is capped to 30 FPS on PC so the performance is about the same. I've played through both versions to 100% completion and don't see any reason to have both.

EDIT: Actually, the PS3 version is a bit more stable. It crashed a few times for me on nearly all of the boss fights in the PC version.

Really disappointed with Capcom during this sale. It's their right whether or not they choose to put their games on sale, but I was really hoping for sales on SF x Tekken and the new RE game, among others. I wouldn't need much of a discount on SF x Tekken in particular, just not going to pay $50 for it.

Regarding the sale format overall, way too much repetition with both the daily and the flash sales, IMO. In the past, I felt like I'd get one chance at a big discount on a daily sale game, possibly two if the game was popular and came back for the final day daily sale. It seems like I've seen games very frequently, between daily and flash sales. If this format works better for Valve and the game devs, I'm sure they'll continue it, but personally, I liked the old format better.

I was looking forward to SFxTekken as well. It's only two months out of the gate, I'm sure by the time Winter sale rolls around a modest discount. I'm sure retail will have it on sale much sooner.

roll a die
1 or 4 vote choice 1
2 or 5 vote choice 2
3 or 6 vote choice 3
If I buy the Trine franchise, and I already own Trine, will I buy able to gift the extra copy away?
No. Usually you will see gift options mentioned below bundles if it is the case.

Anyone think the daily deals for today are going to be a rehash or something new? It'll be nice if steam threw a curveball.
Does anyone remember The Graveyard? You "play" as an old lady slowly walking to a bench and sitting down.
Is The Graveyard compatible with the 360 gamepad? I'd prefer to have that kind of fine control over just how quickly I make it to that bench.

You do realize that's basically like saying you're disappointed that water is wet. This is standard Capcom M.O.

I didn't have a problem with the flash/vote sales from a "I need more games" standpoint since I believe the total number of games on sale is about the same as previous sales. But seeing them over and over did eventually burn me out on looking or caring. Did the sale go longer this year or does it just feel like it between the late start, earlier sales on other sites and repeated flash sales?

On a different note, when NV:Ultimate was on sale, how much did it sell for?

I liked the old format, at first I was excited about the flash sales but most of them popped up as dailies. Checking the deals every 6 hours or whatever probably ended up not being worth the time. It was my choice to follow or ignore them I suppose.
Anyone think the daily deals for today are going to be a rehash or something new? It'll be nice if steam threw a curveball.
I expect it to be a 95% rehash with maybe 1 or if we're lucky 2 new deals.

$9.99

Kingdoms Of Amalur being one of them.
Really disappointed with Capcom during this sale.
Capcom usually doesn't put stuff on sale.

Though the exception this time was Dead Rising 2 and Street Fighter AE. For AE, maybe they thought that this would be their last hurrah for the game. The game is pretty old and the EVO finals was short on hype. If you get a couple deals from Capcom, consider yourself lucky.
$9.99
Thanks.

I think they should spend the last couple hours of the sale having the same 12 games rotating over and over as five minute flash sales. People's heads will explode.
