CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
Just a reminder, the Rage DLC is just two sets, authority pack and sewers. If your copy has extra keys, offload them to the less fortunate.
AFAIK, it's just the sewers that are being put as inserts with a separate code. The Anarachy pack it seems is tied to certain keys of the base game "Rage Retail" and not to others "Rage (NA)". I haven't heard of anyone who got a separate key for the Anarachy pack as of yet.

And what the heck is this Wanderlust Rebirth crap? Steam is for real games, not indie garbage. Get this junk back to Desura with the rest of that indie trash.
This is where you defend it by telling me what I actually want to know. Is it actually good?

I would have thought that you'd like it given that it's pseudo-JRPG-ish. It always seemed to me like anything Anime, even if it's indie, got a pass from you. :p

Anyhow, for anyone thinking of buying it I would hold off for now. Their forum is filled with people complaining the Steam version they bought is apparently the trial version and won't let them get past a certain point telling them they need to upgrade to premium. The dev seems perplexed by it too.

http://forums.reflectgames.com/viewtopic.php?t=3755&sid=b7c92bfa79d41b70c0ac7ecb442c4c4e

Also, I find it interesting they are not issuing Steam keys to prior purchasers since they apparently were issuing Desura keys to those who bought it elsewhere and asked:

Haha, reminds of that xkcd comic about getting help on a linux forum. A link escapes me.

Game does look intriguing though, and the 4 pack price looks just right.

I was quite interested in the game, but this alone makes me second guess an early adoption. Plus, I'm trying to find more specifics on how the gameplay works - Is there Zelda-like exploration, or more arcade-styled room-to-room combat?

In addition, I'm still not sure if those Anime-styled portraits on the top of the screen can be disabled, enabling more real estate for the "game" part. (The pictures on the Steam Product Page imply that heavily, while the trailer does not.)

I have so far ONLY used gems in Coconut Queen to unlock paths. Do I read correctly that there are three total? The upgrade options are starting to look really tempting...
That would make too much sense. It will just encourage people to Railworks it up even more. Instead of Railworks being 50% of the giveaways they are going to be 90% next sale.
This was the first thing I thought of, too. Anyone who's butthurt about their contributor level decreasing is encouraged to flood the board with any 90% off sale games to earn 120% of the game's base value rather than the previous 100%.

It's odd. Mine will decrease a bit if this goes live. My first reaction is negative. But then I remind myself that I'm not playing a meta-game on SG. They didn't track values initially, or at least they didn't parade it around or make it useful. Since most everyone using the site is a gamer, it's going to be a simple fact that people see a number by their names and want to "win" whatever it is. Arbitrarily reduce those numbers that didn't used to exist or have relevance? Backlash.

Psychology students should be writing papers on this.
Banners??? No AdBlock?
I don't block ads either. I kind of like to know what's going on in marketing. I guess it's for the same reason I never block users on CAG. I don't want to have blinders on and then be confused when others react to what I wasn't seeing.
Wait what? The new Sim City will be Origin only? Screw that! You can keep your stupid Sim City then.
I would be disappointed by this, but as much as I love Sim City, I haven't played a version since 2000. Love that game. Having avoided 3000 and 4, I think I can comfortably pretend 5 is available on a platform I prefer and not buy it either way.

Anime-ish tends to have a better design aesthetic than "retro pixel", which is the only thing I can think of to explain where you got that observation.

My copy of Rage was labeled Anarchy Edition, gave me a Rage Retail code with both Sewers and Authority Pack, AND separate code sheets inserted in, one for sewers, one for the Anarchy/Authority pack.

Edit: I'm milking more life out of SR3 by using a savegame editor to give half the streets back to the gangs. Anybody have any experience with this? It seems the only mixes I can come up with are either all gangs no saints or vice versa.

I wouldn't get too upset over this. This is the Steam thread, after all, and the way EA branched off into their own Digital Download service did leave some people upset. (Especially Steam users.) As it stands now, Origin is just a reality.

I myself have both, and feel fairly neutral about Origin's general presence. I do wish I could have those few Origin games on Steam, but I don't horribly mind having to load it up to get to Dead Space 2 or The Saboteur.

In the end, I think it's best not to worry about what people say about Origin. There will always be some negativity surrounding it, due to the aforementioned reasons. Thus, it's easier to ignore such feedback; Getting upset just starts a "Steam vs Origin" debate, which is as useless as any Internet argument.

The SNES was so much better than the Genesis.

For me, it's a matter of not wanting a different online library for every publisher/retailer. There's a certain threshold that it will take to get me to install yet another. Desura recently reached that threshold and is now on my system. Origin has a lot of work to do before I even consider it. EA's series of dick moves do factor a little, but in the end it's going to come down to games and prices, and they aren't even on the radar for the latter element.

Digital distribution is still a relatively new frontier. There will be a lot more contenders yet, and then they will fall back and combine into a Top Several. In the mean time, I'm in no hurry to investigate others without a good reason.

EA has the right to sell their own games on their own service. EA has had a service for a while, back when it was EADM. Sure, it's come a long way since then - but still, it's nowhere as good as Steam. NOBODY's digital service really is as well-done as Steam, for the most part.

While EA has every right to sell exclusive content and stuff to their own service - as a consumer, I think it's annoying. This doesn't keep pricing competitive. This keeps DLC and their exclusive stuff more so at Premium and High Pricing - i.e. see BioWare Digital Store for ME2's DLC pricing and DA2's DLC pricing. Those BioWare Points hardly EVER go on sale, as well. And still, BioWare and EA have yet to re-release on the PC a ME2: Complete Edition - ugh!

On the other hand, Steam is GREAT at coming up w/ sales for a base game + ALL its contents -- the base game, DLC's, DLC Only Packs, Compete Edition packs (game + ALL DLC), etc etc. Buying the base game early, isn't a mistake w/ them - you can often buy DLC or DLC Only Packages discounted later from them. Other digital services SHOULD really take note of this.

I myself have both, and feel fairly neutral about Origin's general presence. I do wish I could have those few Origin games on Steam, but I don't horribly mind having to load it up to get to Dead Space 2 or The Saboteur.
In the beginning, what I really liked about Origin (before BF3) was you basically used EADM/Origin basically to just do the download...and that was it. You were NOT forced to run the Origin program in the background to run your game.

Of course, since BF3 and beyond (ME3, KOA:R - Non-Steam Versions, NFS: The Run, Syndicate 2012 FPS) - they force Origin on you to run in the background. I think it's VERY annoying, that basically they're copying what Steam does - especially without realizing how good Steam's client and features actually are.

If Steam didn't force you to run itself in the background when you play a Steam-version game, I still think most people would run Steam in the background - b/c of all the awesome Community and Friends features that Steam got going on. Origin's Friends features...is basically bare-bones and almost non-existent.

I really like w/ Origin games (from EA) that I can just copy the game-folder as is for a back-up, not having to archive a back-up, as well - since the installer folder's within the actual game folder; they streamlined this very well.

Hey, I go where the best prices go. Usually, of late, that seems to be both Steam and Amazon DVG.

Origin's deals have been quite lacking for me, since last November - that was around when Batman: AA and BF3 were on sale for Thanksgiving (2011).

EA has every right to do this, BUT...

My big problem w/ Origin or any EA-related services doing exclusive content is this keeps especially DLC and Season Pass pricing VERY HIGH. They're really NOT a service to have awesome deals, like Steam (eventually) does. You basically, for the most part, usually HAVE to buy this content from EA directly.

Especially when it comes to anything sold w/ BioWare Points. I don't wanna change my USD $ into a silly BioWare Points system. I like buying my stuff via real USD $ w/ my CC - like I'd do with say Steam or Amazon DVG!

it all comes down to finding the best deal, you could always just buy the retail copy of the game and just activate it on the client, this past week i got KOA reckoning on best buy for 10 bucks after a coupon discount that was on the bestbuy magazine, you would say that you still need the coupon but this is available to anyone since anyone can subscribe to it

Yeah, my point was that EA is not only going exclusive Origin with just the two IPs that have made them the most money to date (ME & BF). I should have been more clear. They are now going the way of being exclusive Origin with all newly released EA games - correct me if I am wrong. Like you mentioned NFS: The Run and I mentioned Syndicate - both of those I wouldn't consider them near as main stream as ME3 & BF3. In other words, games like NFS: The Run and Syndicate are not going to make the average Steam user give Origin a try - especially at Origin prices! EA has gone the arrogant approach thinking their games are superior enough to cause you to gladly accept Origin or something. I believe you referenced it earlier in your honey vs vinegar analogy. Bottom line is I believe moving forward, we need to assume that ALL newly released EA WILL be Origin Exclusive.
the hate on origin is just that, pure hate, i have both clients, steam and origin and never had a problem with either, of course as is usual on the internet people will just jump the hate train without even experiencing the service
Ironically, based upon my above statement, I do have a few games on Origin. The games I do have on Origin were either activated from my Steam collection or purchased with Amazon $5 coupons that I trade for with extra indie bundle keys during coupon bonanza at the first of the year. The point is that I do not have any money directly tied into Origin whatsoever. My thoughts are that I wanted to give Origin a chance to prove itself to me. Origin and Amazon Customer Service ARE both putting the pressure on to Steam IMO. Outside of CS, Origin does scare me from a longevity standpoint. Doesn't Origin have something in their User Agreement about how Origin has the right to disallow the customer (us) from being able to download our games after a certain time frame? That scares me, but I'm willing to take that risk WITH my current Origin games because either A) I have the same game on Steam, or B) I received the Origin game indirectly for free through trades of extra indie keys for $5 Amazon coupons. I'm OK with it for now because I really do not have much if any risk monetarily speaking.

This I believe is where the hate comes in for EA\Origin - TRUST! Do we really trust EA/Origin at this point? I can't say that we do, but as time goes along I think it will become more clear to us all concerning Steam vs. Origin vs. Amazon (indirectly since Amazon offers both Steam and Origin).
in all honesty you're "POINT" has no point.. i never even mentioned you, who are you anyway? i just wrote that out of all the negative comments about the client, seriously, don't flatter yourself...
It does have a point but I really am done explaining myself to someone so obviously trollish as to throw a rock at a hornet's nest by condescending to Steam fans who don't care for Origin in a Steam thread of all places.

Off to the ignore list you go. Go ahead and take that as an internet victory and feel smug and self satisfied about that if you want.
It does have a point..
I agree.

Usually, getting the base game cheap eventually, is not the problem - as we've seen Retail & Digital Services eventually drop the base game prices VERY low.

It's the DLC!!!

When there's DLC exclusivity stuff, it keeps premium pricing VERY high.

We can just look at the DLC's for DA2 and ME2 - you can only get those through a EA/BioWare service (BioWare Digital Store).

And lately, EA has NOT been re-releasing Ultimate Editions (Base Game + ALL Expansions + ALL DLC). Only reason Crysis 2 got a Maximum Edition (with everything - Base Game + ALL DLC) and got back on Steam b/c Crytek is using EA Partners program for game companies who are not tied/owned by publishers. This gives them (Crytek) the leeway of where they can put the game.

EA doesn't own Crytek; Crytek owns Crytek.

EDIT:
Same went from 38 Studios and BHG (RIP to them both). They had leverage to have separate KOA: Reckoning versions for both Origin and Steam b/c they were part of EA Partners program. If they survived, would've been nice to see Reckoning 2 - since we now know they were probably going to wind up w/ 2K publishing Reckoning 2. Of course, we all know - that ain't happening, since 38 Studios and BHG are gone.

Regarding Origin, as this seems to be the new topic now, the only games I have on there are games I downloaded from way back when they didn't have a digital service (Hellgate London or Bad Company 2) and games i've got from Amazon (Dragon Age collection) and so far they work fine.

The customer service even gave me a refund in the form of a free game when APB(All Points Bulletin) died with in two months of paying $50 for it. But other than that I still prefer Steam, like others have said the DLC on EA hardly if ever goes on sale outside of a complete edition and not to mention they hardly if ever mark down prices in their store.

Though since all of Steams main properties are exclusive to Steam(Portal,Half Life, Team Fortress) I guess it is fair that EA keeps all it's main proprieties(Battlefield,Mass Effect, Sim City?) on their platform.

Though if you think about it only hurts them in sales, As I am sure more people buy EA games if they came out on Steam. What they should do is offer the games on both Steam and Origin but then mark the games down to like $40 dollars on Origin and keep them at $60 on Steam. That way people have choice but will more than likely choose the cheapest price.

The programs were in response to the Great Depression, and focused on what historians call the "3 Rs": Relief, Recovery, and Reform. That is, Relief for the unemployed and poor; Recovery of the economy to normal levels; and Reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression.
New deal in 20 minutes! I am so excited!
Bring on the mediocre!

It'd be great if it was Rig 'n Roll for 75% off.

The reason why Ocarina of Time is a terrible game is because the Water Temple had the hidden-yet-mission critical section in the middle tower. The spikes clearly show that there's nothing down there, and the fact that the platforms rise with the water level doesn't automatically lead to the assumption that there's a hole down there. One bad dungeon design decision results in a game being poor, and, as a result, Harvest Moon 64 moves up to the top of the list as the best Nintendo 64 game of all time.

EDIT: Oh, dang, I took too long to write that, and now the Origin debate is over. Now it just looks like I posted in the wrong thread.

I don't care; Harvest Moon 64 for life!

I believe the answer was obtained the second I paid $59.99 USD (MSRP) for a game about farming.
Regarding Origin, as this seems to be the new topic now, the only games I have on there are games I downloaded from way back when they didn't have a digital service (Hellgate London or Bad Company 2) and games i've got from Amazon (Dragon Age collection) and so far they work fine.
Oh, wow - HGL was on EADM/Origin?

I knew EA published the game at retail...
Hehe, I got the HGL CE in a Retail Box from Gogamer.

The customer service even gave me a refund in the form of a free game when APB(All Points Bulletin) died with in two months of paying $50 for it.
EA customer service helped me, too. I had a problem when there was a Flash Sale, Dead Space 2 was $25 not too long after games release. I put the Flash Sale code in; game appeared at $25 + tax in the cart and at final check-out and review price for it; but then showed-up in my bill at $50 afterwards.

Called EA Support up - told them what happened. They said it should've went through b/c it appeared on the final checkout at $25; refunded me some money back to me and did one better and said they'd gave me the game for $20 for my troubles of the whole matter and calling up EA support. :)

But other than that I still prefer Steam, like others have said the DLC on EA hardly if ever goes on sale outside of a complete edition and not to mention they hardly if ever mark down prices in their store.
They did have decent deals here and there, in the beginning - especially when it was EADM and when it relaunched as EA Origin.

Granted, they often weren't NOWHERE as good on a very regular basis as Steam's deals, overall.

Of late, not really so much - for EA w/ making good deal here and there.

Though since all of Steams main properties are exclusive to Steam(Portal,Half Life, Team Fortress) I guess it is fair that EA keeps all it's main proprieties(Battlefield,Mass Effect, Sim City?) on their platform.
That's a pretty good point, actually.
Though, I'd rather see Steam-required game sold on Origin and also Origin-required games on Steam.
But, it is what it is, I guess.

I don't see EA or Valve going away, anytime soon...

9 more minutes or so, approximately! :)
Hopefully, it's something good!

For me, hopefully it's something I been wanting & don't have. ;)

Yeah, either that or Hydrophobia.

Of course they have a right to do it. Any store has a right to market and sell however they want. That is so obvious that it doesn't even need to be stated.

I also have a right as a consumer not to like it not to buy and even to express and opinion about it which in the end is just that an opinion.

I don't like feeling forced into something or like I have less options. However if they ran some good sales I'm not necessarily totally opposed to trying something new. Hoodwink looks interesting why not have a good sale on that.

A lot of us got into Steam because of the sales and then stayed on because it's a good service with a lot of convenient features. (And Origin still has some work yet to do in that department) Ultimately I feel much better about a decision like that than if I feel like that than if I feel like I am begrudgingly dragged into trying a service because someone is taking their toys and leaving the sandbox.

I agree with you about the dlc exclusivity being problematic from the perspective of a consumer but from everything I've read this is pretty much their goal. They want to shift to a dlc heavy model so they get a constant stream of income from games instead of at launch and they want people to buy it directly from them digitally so they get 100% of the profits with no overhead or middleman and the savings not passed on to the consumer.

For Valve having a game store and making games I don't think is that big of a deal because they make very few games. EA on the other hand makes a large portion of AAA games and has also made some big acquisitions into casual games of late. Letting them become the dominant gaming store for digital downloads in my opinion gives them way too much power over the gaming industry, is anti-consumer and ultimately may fragment the market encouraging every publisher to make their own exclusive store not compatible with anyone else's while squeezing some of the smaller guys and resellers out.

Finally, I will state that for the record yes I am suspicious of EA and their motives but this is based on past experience over many years seeing smaller companies swallowed up by them and games that I greatly enjoyed changed in ways that I don't feel were for the better. If this makes me biased then so be it.

Ultimately all of this is just the opinion of one random guy on the internet and doesn't really amount to a hill of beans. If someone reading this is greatly offended or feels some overwhelming need to prove me wrong please keep that in mind.

Pat and Mat was originally a Czech series (Pat and Mat mean Stalemate and Checkmate in Czech). I don't think the series was ever popular in the United States, but I could be wrong.

I might have given the game a try for 75% off... especially because they would mark it down more right after I bought it if I got it for 66% off.

Well I'm on mobile so it took me forever and a day to write that damned rant.

*reminds self not to go on tirades on mobile*

Anyway Harvest Moon is the stuff. I wish there were a (decent) game like it on the PC.

Ah makes sense, when they said,"Pat and Mat look just like their TV show" I was like what TV show?!

wow, Pat and Mat has steam cloud support. They should add achievements and make it 75% off instead of 66%. Im sure a lot more people would be reeled in then.
