CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
The turn based aspect kind of helps too I think. Things don't really happen until you end the turn so you can take as long as you like. Turn based games are pretty much out of vogue these days so it's a bit surprising they managed to keep the Civ games that way and make it work and still keep it popular.

Anyway, there's a demo so if you aren't sure you can always try it first.
Okay, ashamed to admit this but I am 12 days behind now on the Steam threads. I'm still catching up in thread V3, heh. Too many nuggets of wisdom in there to skip them. Maybe I'm OCD...

But I saw this post from Motaki and I wanted to share this link about the rebirth of Turn-based strategy games. On CNN's website, of all places.

It's basically an homage to Firaxis, who will be releasing the new modern XCOM reboot this summer. Which I am stoked for. They also comment on boardgame conversions, like Settlers of Catan (and, incidentally, Ticket to Ride and the other great game conversions from Days of Wonder.)

Some games just lend themselves to turn-based action, and they don't feel slow. Firaxis is the master of giving us a sense of ebb and flow, yet allowing us to get up and get a beer or tuck the kids in without having to quit the game.

None of this changes the fact, though, that fewer and fewer games are being made this way.
Of course they have a right to do it. Any store has a right to market and sell however they want. That is so obvious that it doesn't even need to be stated.

I also have a right as a consumer not to like it not to buy and even to express and opinion about it which in the end is just that an opinion.

I don't like feeling forced into something or like I have less options.
I agree w/ all of this 100%.

However if they ran some good sales I'm not necessarily totally opposed to trying something new. Hoodwink looks interesting why not have a good sale on that.
Now I'll have to look up what Hoodwink is now... ;)

I think Origin should run more deals frequently, as well...like they did early on when they re-branded EADM as EA Origin.

A lot of us got into Steam because of the sales and then stayed on because it's a good service with a lot of convenient features. (And Origin still has some work yet to do in that department)
Agreed.
Most of my purchases seem to come from Amazon DVG and Steam, of late.

I think Batman:AA last November was the last game I bought from Origin ($25) and that was like right after its initial PC release.

I agree with you about the dlc exclusivity being problematic from the perspective of a consumer but from everything I've read this is pretty much their goal. They want to shift to a dlc heavy model so they get a constant stream of income from games instead of at launch and they want people to buy it directly from them digitally so they get 100% of the profits with no overhead or middleman and the savings not passed on to the consumer.
Nobody's arguing this - especially if how we look at BioWare Points situation w/ ME2 DLC and DA2 DLC.

Only thing good about BF3: Premium DLC Pack - actually Gamersgate & Amazon DVG do sell it. Yes, so it's NOT just EA selling it exclusively to their services, thankfully. So, I really hope GG and Amazon DVG do have pricing sales on that BF3 Premium DLC Pack, eventually. Same goes for BF3 base game, since I'm missing that, as well. I wish they'd do a Premium DLC pack like that w/ DA2 DLC and ME2 DLC and let other stores like Gamersgate and Amazon DVG sell it.

For Valve having a game store and making games I don't think is that big of a deal because they make very few games. EA on the other hand makes a large portion of AAA games and has also made some big acquisitions into casual games of late. Letting them become the dominant gaming store for digital downloads in my opinion gives them way too much power over the gaming industry, is anti-consumer and ultimately may fragment the market encouraging every publisher to make their own exclusive store not compatible with anyone else's while squeezing some of the smaller guys and resellers out.
EA does sell some of their Origin-exclusive games on other services like GG and Amazon DVG - i.e. Syndicate, NFS: The Run, ME3, etc etc.

Again, for the most part - those services ain't worried about EA selling exclusive DLC. They should be, if you ask me - so much money can be made off DLC, it ain't even funny. Plus, they should want to sell their users COMPLETE products. Valve is concerned about DLC being sold on their services, b/c of numerous things. Steam-versions of games require Steam (most times) in the background - so when untested, who knows what issues could result if a game + all DLC is not tested to run while Steam's running. Valve wants to sell complete products to their gamers; which is great - I wish more services thought like this. Also, I'm sure Valve wants to take a cut of those DLC sales, too - and they should, it's THEIR service the consumer are buying a game over!

Finally, I will state that for the record yes I am suspicious of EA and their motives but this is based on past experience over many years seeing smaller companies swallowed up by them and games that I greatly enjoyed changed in ways that I don't feel were for the better. If this makes me biased then so be it.

Ultimately all of this is just the opinion of one random guy on the internet and doesn't really amount to a hill of beans. If someone reading this is greatly offended or feels some overwhelming need to prove me wrong please keep that in mind.
I'm not offended.
We can ask Westwood, Bullfrog and Origin (game company that made Ultima) about this. :(
I wish EA wouldn't let System Shock IP rot and do something with it, as well. Maybe, it's be better if they sell it to Irrational or someone who'd be able to make a (great) System Shock 3. [shrug]

On the whole EA issue:

Let's not forget that in a recent interview one of the EA execs said that while they will have sales, they will not do discounts on the scale like Steam and other digital sites do them. They feel that by discounting digital goods at such a high percentage it cheapens the intellectual property, thus demeaning the people that came up with said items.
Personally I do not get that reasoning. What is the point in having something out there that everyone would love and enjoy, but keep it out of the hands of all the people that could potentially do so? I don't expect you to make your latest greatest game be on sale for 75% off a month after it just released, but let's be honest. When Battlefield 4 comes out in 2013, do you think people are still going to pay a 50% discount for Battlefield 3? A couple might, but you would honestly get more sales on an older title with a 60-75% off sale.

However, this is just my opinion, and ultimately means shit. EA is not hurting for revenue, and until they are they will have ZERO motivation to do any type of heavy discounts on anything in their library.

What I loved about that EA interview (assuming I am thinking of the one your talking about) Is that they said they wouldn't do any steep discounts like 75% off as it cheapens their property's. Then in the next few days they have a handful of games like the Mass Effect and Dragon age stuff for 75% off.

Since I do often makes me wait for the eventual 75% off sale or $10 or less sales from Steam & Amazon DVG, in that sense, he might be onto something. Steam and Amazon DVG especially have been spoiling us w/ killer sales.
Makes me often want to spend the SAME price on the sequels, as well. ;)

Personally I do not get that reasoning. What is the point in having something out there that everyone would love and enjoy, but keep it out of the hands of all the people that could potentially do so?
It's all about them trying to make lots of sales (volume) at full-price/premium pricing...or close to it, I think.

I don't expect you to make your latest greatest game be on sale for 75% off a month after it just released
Agreed, but it would be nice. ;)

I'd probably be more interested in a BF3: Complete Pack (BF3 + Premium), by that time.
Or, getting both BF3 + Premium separately, but on the cheap...

Apparently it's quite easy when you don't know what the fuck you are doing.
You go ahead and do that and tell me how that worked out for you when it comes out in 2013. ;)

Yes it is. It will also require you to be constantly connected to the internet even if you play single player.

The thing that really bugs me about Origin is I feel like they are doing strong arm tactics and holding their games for ransom to try and force you to go there rather than a softer approach of say, having some really good sales as a means to get you to willingly (as opposed to begrudgingly) try them out.

Call me crazy but I am more willing to give something a shot and maybe stick around afterwards with the 'catch flies with honey' approach vs the vinegar one. :p
Vinegar is awesome mixed with cucumbers and onions. mmmmmmm
I had no idea there was even a new Sim City game coming out. Talk about joy and disappointment back to back. I hate using Origin. They have already banned my account once a few weeks back because I let the POGO.com account I had setup for my mom lapse 5 YEARS AGO.
Do you actually have to use Pogo? I haven't used it since the rep at EA opened me a Pogo account to activate Spore which I had bought at Walmart. Great so I'll lose access to my Origin games. :wall:
the hate on origin is just that, pure hate, i have both clients, steam and origin and never had a problem with either, of course as is usual on the internet people will just jump the hate train without even experiencing the service

If anything I could say that this post was rare, but I thought nah forget it, yo homes to Bel-Air!!!
:) This made me laugh pretty hard.

For me the issue is plain and simple... EA. For all the good games it's helped get to market, the damage it's done as a corporation has been 100-fold.

In addition, their unwillingness to explore or even acknowledge volume sales at steep discounts and it's potential to exceed the return on premium pricing is nonsense. Their iOS division has proven that's nonsense, and their iOS sales demonstrate recognition of this. Why only their iOS division adheres to the business reality, I have no idea. Maybe the problem in EA is silo'ed business division with a full-on asshat at the head of PC.

While I fully have many EA titles on my favorite games list, I can't in any good concious ever willingly support them and their empire.

/endEArant LOL sorry, all the EA talk got me going. >
I would be disappointed by this, but as much as I love Sim City, I haven't played a version since 2000. Love that game. Having avoided 3000 and 4, I think I can comfortably pretend 5 is available on a platform I prefer and not buy it either way.
3000 Unlimited and 4 are both quite good (the former more than the latter, imo)!

+1 to this all day long

I see EA as sort of like the big banks we have now like BofA, Wells Fargo, Chase, etc...They've been around so long and are so big that the can just do whatever they want. Personally, I haven't tried Origin, but haven't had any game where I needed to load their client yet.

I think my own distrust of EA is that they are like the big banks and may end up screwing you over later. At this point, I just avoid anything they put out and vote with my dollars which means no Dragon Age 2 for me at all, Mass Effect, or anything else they come out with. I can live with it and just vote with my dollars. I suppose I just don't care enough to bother with their stuff at this point in my life.

I think DA2 was good, but it just was NOWHERE even bloody remotely close to the absolutely amazing DA:O. The original DAO is the best party-based strategy-style RPG since BG2 and PS:T.

I think ME3 is one of the best games this year....that's even despite the last 10 minutes of the end-game stuff being horrible - that's before Extended Cut came out, since I haven't tried that yet.

Harvest Moon was and is awesome, there is just a few of the series that flat out suck. Whats been great as of late is the alternate harvest moon games, like Innocent Life or Rune Factory.

I STILL ain't played that game (Snatcher).

Konami should re-release Snatcher to Steam and other PC digital services.
Who's with me? :)

I honestly like Origin around and hope it gets better (never use it though). It provides competition for Steam, and could keep Steam in check. When the original NES was the lone platform on the market they ripped off developers by charging huge licensing fees.

Also, is Steam really necessary? It could be argued that Steam has essentially saved the PC gaming market, but at the same time Steam client is something no one really needs. I miss valve the video game company.

Amazon DVG normally does a much better job of competing w/ Steam.

That's my one thing about Steam program - I wish it was optional to run in the background. There are benefits to running Steam in the background, of course - i.e. the Community/Friends features; and tracking of your game-time spent w/ a game, for starters.

I can't think of one worthwhile reason to have Origin running in the background. It lacks features and an awesome community!!

I think the built-in DRM is the main reason these services are forcing the client-program to run in the background. I've ran offline mode for both Origin and Steam, when I've had connection issues on my end; or my ISP's end; or say the game-client service was in maintenance mode (like Steam does) - and yep, they both work fine w/ SP-games (as long as you've already activated your game online before-hand, of course). :)

O boy, I come here just to see bundles taking my money :p. Oh well, I guess it is my fault, was really interested in both DTSs, and there they go and put them on the bundle D':
Alright, I can't decide what to play. I am trying to pick between Recettear, Fallout New Vegas and Alan Wake. Someone decide for me.
Can't speak for Recettear, but your decision purely lies on how much time you have. If you see yourself having 40+ hours of free time within 2 weeks then I suggest Fallout; if you have less then 10 hours of free time within 2 weeks then I suggest Alan Wake. I guess if you 10-40 hours free time then go for Recettear.

Have you tried Drakensang?, it is almost at the same and in my opinion better than DA:O. It is far more closer to BG2 and PS:T as like with Baldurs Gate it is based on a table top rpg system so there is a ton of depth and customization when it comes to leveling and choosing skills.

I have a Genesis CDX, the combo Genesis/Sega CD system that looks about the size of a Discman. Best five bucks I ever spent at the flea market. (I lack Snatcher, though.)
Alright, I can't decide what to play. I am trying to pick between Recettear, Fallout New Vegas and Alan Wake. Someone decide for me.
If it helps, I own all three and have yet to play any!
ColecoVision IS my favorite; just recently I brought it over to a friend's and we ended up playing Mouse Trap for like 8 hours straight
...have that, too.

Im having a blast modding up FONV at the moment. Go get youself some high res textures, hot Cass and Veronica and have some fun.
I think DA2 was good, but it just was NOWHERE even bloody remotely close to the absolutely amazing DA:O. The original DAO is the best party-based strategy-style RPG since BG2 and PS:T.
I liked both games too, but felt my actions in DA:O affected the ending of it way more than in DA2.

I think ME3 is one of the best games this year....that's even despite the last 10 minutes of the end-game stuff being horrible - that's before Extended Cut came out, since I haven't tried that yet.

Yeah. The extended cut added some time to each of the endings, and added a choice that should've been there before, but honestly I don't think it changed much of how I interpreted what the original endings meant anyway, or what I surmised must have happened (for instance, why the Normandy flies off). I think if you just flat out hated what the original endings were in the first place, then you wouldn't really like what the extended cut added, because the idea behind the endings (except for that added one) didn't really change.
Well, I just finished the main storyline from SR3. Man, what a great ride that was! Easily one of the best games I've played in a while. :)
Wow, that was fast. So far I've accomplished very little other than harassing people on the streets.

I am loving all this talk about colecovision and Harvest Moon. I remember showing off my shiny new colecovision that could actually show more than one color at a time to my cousin who had rubbed my face the fact he had an atari for far too long. I spent many hours playing mousetrap and cabbage patch kids.

And I totally agree with Harvest Moon 64 although I have enjoyed the Rune Factory games a lot.

And back on topic for Steam, I'm spending a lot of time with the Clash of Heroes game. It's my favorite purchase from the sale so far. I think I will start Alan Wake next.
That can be solved.

Now returning to our regular thread....
Okay, so I finally watched it. Not laugh my ass off hilarious, but still pretty good. I was worried I wasn't gonna get a lot of references since I've only seen the new DW series and the first two Doctors, but I think I got the gist. It still holds up pretty well, maybe even better now as it ties into that Rose love interest plot. It was nice to see a bunch of other British actors playing the Doctor as well. Thanks.

I haven't seen the new added content yet, but I did see the new choice they added involving the child-god. It was such an obvious fuck you to all the dissenters, but a hilarious one. Although, it does disappoint me that I won't be able to
shoot that impudunt little shit any longer without destroying the universe
. Seriously, that was the best part of that crapshoot ending.
Can anyone lemme know, do Steam preorders charge at the time of the order? Or at the time of release?
Time of pre order  If it is still like how it used to be. Though you can always mail support to cancel the game before the game releases I hear.

I'm pretty sure it's at the time of order, that it's added to your account immediately but not "unlocked" until release, and occasionally with the ability to begin downloading a day beforehand. But the last game I purchased before release was foam another site and activated on Steam, so I'm not 100% sure on the billing part.

+1 confirming that is at time of order.

Thanks for the information about the shark tank. Played literally for about 30 seconds, caught 2 more crabs in my already-started freeplay level, and it unlocked. Built it, and got the last statue.

And since it's Olympics season:
