CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

>.> That 3 activations, period, caused me to not to pick it up for $10 on the Steam Sale. I'm keeping an eye out for a similar or better deal (I'm in no rush) on Amazon or GamersGate, since they promise to reset/re-key you if you run out of activations. Or until the publisher concedes to more standard/friendly activation limits.
If you liked/wanted Dirt 2, I think you'll like/love GRID. Imo it's the best arcade-y racer in the last decade (on PC at least), though Burnout 3 stands similarly high in a different way. The physics model in GRID is so enjoyable, a nice balance of depth and fun.

For reference, my opinions of known titles (100% completion or close unless noted):
NFS: Underground : okay
NFS: Underground 2 : Fun.
NFS: MW : Much Fun.
NFS: Carbon : Enjoyable, ranks a little under NFS:U2
NFS: ProStreet: skipped
NFS: Undercover : Dull waste of time... throw me a challenge here... I'm not used to getting 1st place on my first attempt most of the time.
NFS: Shift : Didn't like... supposedly there's something interesting if you tweak all the setting away from the completely stupid defaults (e.g. cars seem featherweight)
NFS: Hot Pursuit (2, 2010) Much Fun
NFS: Shift 2 : Backlog
NFS: The Run: Enjoyable, but hard to recommend. Quite pretty, but 30 FPS cap. Damn stupidest thing is the rare gas station method of switching cars... too rare, impossible/hard to know what kind of car (muscle/steet racer/exotic) to pick to handle the next several tracks/segments.. and switching cars sets you back a few seconds. Minor gripe: a few forced-in quick-time-events (in cutscenes, not in driving). Also annoying is the ability to replay by chapter, a string of ~5 segments.

Burnout Paradise: Fun/Enjoyable... I wish it was more challenging though. Pretty.
Burnout 3, 4, 5: Awesome... I liked the challenge of 3 the best.

Dirt : Backlog... need to boot to XP or check into fixes for Win7 compatability, supposedly good
Dirt 2: Excellent (And I hadn't been a fan of offroad racers.)
Dirt 3: Backlog /shame (though since good/decent racers are one-a-year at best I like to keep something in reserve)

GRID: Most Excellent, edges out Dirt 2. Much replayability. I wish they made a sequel/expanion (just give me more tracks/cars. I especially liked Nürburgring (the Bahrain track was memorable too).

Split Second: Much fun. The gimmick set-destruction is very very well integrated and mastery of is critical to getting 1st place. Unfortunately, I've played 2/3 though three times... my saves get horribly corrupted. (Despiite rolling back to prior saves: GoGo Dropbox restore w/Link Shell Extention -- I should post about that separately). I want to finish this sometime by not exiting it before completion.

Driver: SF : It's a car themed game, not a racer, imo. I didn't like it that much... though some of that is disappointment from expecting more of a racer. The shift mechanic is novel.

Blur: Backlog

Flatout 1/2/UC : Backlog

Midnight Club II: Played an hour... didn't grab me
I love how you give so much context for your recommendation. I wish everyone handle recommendations this way.

I didn't mind the QTEs... they were short and easy, and it gave the game a plot i actually kinda enjoyed.
That said, you forgot the fatal flaw of the game... the ridiculous hit detection on the edges of the road that causes an instant crash for even a minor infraction.

I really enjoyed the shift mechanic, though it made the game way too easy. You can't really lose a race when you can shift into a car in oncoming traffic and crash into your opposition. Still, i found this game incredibly enjoyable.

I think you should play this sooner than later. It's... just a really nice game, about the same quality as split second, but different. The power ups work quite well.
I wish both s/s and blur would get sequels, though the chances of that approach nil.

You can PM one of the mods on their forum to reset the activation limit, so it's not the absolute worst form of DRM. It's manageable, but I'd avoid buying it personally.

Crap.

So I told myself no on Darksiders II but all of the new info and stuff is making me want it...

With GMG's 25% off and my credit I can pick it up for $33.54

Ugh, tempting. Thoughts?

The original Darksiders was amazing for Zelda fans, especially myself. However, $33 is waaaay too much for one game so I'm gonna wait for a sale.

I've gotta say that Carbon is far too underrated. Very polished game, some of the most in-depth customization in racing games of the time (and even today), some really hair-raising race modes like the Canyon races (Inital D style anyone?), etc. Maybe it's criticized more for a weaker story, but I don't really play racing games for the story. The entire wingman system got a little annoying for me, but besides that, loved Carbon.

I have to agree that Pro Street is pretty worthless. Just didn't do the series any justice.

Midnight Club II really has nothing in common with the NFS series though. That's an arcade racer if there ever was one. Part of me loves that game because of nostalgia, but it's still a lot of fun.

Re: Two Worlds 2. Castle Defense isn't a DLC to the game, it's an entirely separate game that's mostly tower defense in nature.

I want it too but I was trying out my Darksiders 1 PC copy for the first time and I can't get it to run right. It has massive stuttering and choppiness, my PC is strong and should handle it. Fraps tells me its at a constant 60fps, but it's unplayable. Crazy. So I'm hesitant to buy another PC game from the same developer without some reviews first. I played 1 on PS3 and it was really terrific. If I knew there were no technical issues I'd buy 2 at $34 without hesitation.

Please don't hesitate if I can clarify anything.
:applause:That is one hell of a post!
^_^ I like my racing games. Please post/PM if I can clarify anything, e.g. NFS:U stiff handling, NFS:U2 awesome drift mode, etc. I simply wanted to highlight where I was coming from for MysterD's benefit (and everyone else). I read game reviews and look where the reviewer is coming from. I was expecting that anyone interested in Dirt 2 or GRID had played at least a few of my mentioned games.
best arcade racer of the last decade? whoa. how'd i miss this? must get.

skipped for a reason, or just skipped?
Reviews at the time were terrible. When I last paid attention (years ago) it was still at $20 for PC or PS2. I probably would have bought it for $10, and definitely at $5 out of curiosity.

Cutscene QTEs bug me... so does controller-vibe during cutscenes (going back to DMC1). I like to sit back and enjoy cutscenes. You are so correct, the road edge issue was annoying, I adjusted my driving style. It was sufficiently, though not memorably, challenging (on "normal").
Great game.
/agree \\:D/ The save-corruption I experienced is my only negative against it. (That's saying a lot.)

I can definitely see that perspective, I know my bias was from expecting a racer (It was my first Driver game.) I am kinda rigid, I know what I know, I feel what I feel. While it is difficult for me to overcome my initial feelings, I usually know why I have them.

+1 Thanks for that Blur recommend. I'll put it on the top of my next-play racer list. I'm glad you thought so welll of it. The reviews I read didn't think so highly of it (for single player). But then again few reviews address whether a game is fun or enjoyable (regardless of price/graphics).
Yea. zzzz. Wanted to love it, but something felt off.
Thanks! I wish I had known at the time. (Though with my backlog I will (try to) tell myself not to regret it too much.)

^_^ I loved the canyon racing at night in NFS:Carbon. I agree it's far too underrated. Honestly, I don't need no effin story, I'm playing a racing game because I was to drive a car fast. (Online, without being busted by pigs.) ... oh gosh, yes the wingman, now that you remind me, that was mildly (though only mildly) irritating.

Disappointing to hear, I kinda jumped this game ahead of my backlog due to hype behind Darksiders 2. I glanced through what the internet had to say of this issue, and it seems like it's just a bad port. I heard suggestions of turning off vsync and playing it on lower resolution could alleviate stuttering to certain extent.

Weird, Darksiders runs just peachy on my (decidedly midrange early 2009) PC, AMD 720BE, GTX260 core 216. While enjoyable, I only have 15 hours played (accoring to steam).

I thought it started as a free update to the base game and eventually was made a separate title for those without the base game to play. Kind of like Warhammer: The Last Stand

Have you tried running the first game on your system?

Some people had issues getting the first one to run properly on their PC's (cross our fingers for a better port this time).

Does GMG have a way to cancel pre-orders in case it's a horrible port?

If not, it's a bit of a gamble.

If you are willing to take a chance and plan to play it at the launch then pull the trigger.

I'm wondering if Darksiders just isn't very optimized. On my old Radeon HD 5770 (which handled many similar games just fine), Darksiders was pretty choppy at 1920x1200 resolution. Once I upgraded to a Radeon HD 7850, I was able to play at 2560x1440 resolution just fine without any choppiness.

I played many other 1920x1200 resolution games for the last couple years, so I was surprised to see how choppy Darksiders was at that resolution. I eventually had to change it to a lower resolution to enjoy it until I upgraded. For reference I have an old core i5-750 overclocked to 3.8 at stock voltage.

No, IIRC this game was made to "promote" Two Worlds 2, but it doesn't seem to have much in common with the RPG series other than sharing a name and setting.

The Last Stand evolved in a slightly different way from how you describe it: it did start out as a multiplayer update to Dawn of War II, but when Relic saw how popular it was, the dev decided to create an expanded and enhanced version to be released alongside the Retribution standalone expansion pack that could be purchased separately.

In Darksiders 1 I've personally never made it past the first checkpoint as the game freezes in the same place every time. Definitely a horrible port, I wonder if it's been fixed yet.
I've been putting off starting Alan Wake since I plowed through L.A. Noire and all these comments have alternately worried and encouraged me. I think I was most looking forward to it being a better "port" than what Rockstar crapped out.
FWIW, I ended up going back to the chapter select and downgrading to "easy" difficulty. That got me past the nasty bit where I was hung up on Normal. The main reason I like the game at this point is the story; neither the plot nor the gameplay are terribly original but stories are most of what interest me about almost any game (the only exception being when I'm in one of those moods where I just want to kill/blow things up).

I'm assuming you have nVidia, in which case there should be a setting you can flip to fix it. Not sure what it is though.
When I first started play The Longest Journey I didn't know I was suppose to pick stuff up. After I realized that I start clicking on every tiny thing to see if I was suppose to pick it up or solve some mysterious puzzle (This is also a problem with Bethesda games- I'm a virtual hoarder). I drove myself mad. I was really worried I was going to miss something and not be able to solve a future puzzle. It made the game take much longer than it should have.

I plan on checking out BttF and The Walking Dead. Hopefully I can get my OCD in check when I play those games.
Telltale's adventure games would be better in your case, though I found their methods to be too easy compared to the older games in the series they continued (Monkey Island and Sam 'n Max). In their games, when you mouse over an interactive object, its name appears. Clicking on everything is fun in itself because the protagonists are well written and tend to have funny things to say about them. If it turns out that the object is meant to be carried, he'll pick it up, or he'll comment in a way that tells you that something more is needed, even with the hints turned all the way down.

By contrast, the original Sam 'n Max Hit the Road has objects strewn about that offer funny dialogue should you examine them, but attempting to take them is a separate command. You may have listened to Sam comment on the Bucket o' Fish without thinking to try adding it to your inventory. Going back to previous scenes to see if you missed looting something was often necessary.

This isn't to suggest that the Telltale games are less rewarding, though. While the games make it less likely that you'll miss a key item, they keep you thinking by adding several puzzle scenes where you have to work out a sequence of what you can do from different vantages and when and in what order to perform these actions to solve the problem, often knocking out a thug or two. They're quite well done.

I'm sort of the same way. Unless a critical point of the game is survival (Stalker, Sniper Elite V2, etc) I tend to set the difficulty low and enjoy the story. Or, in the case of games like SRTT, just enjoy the action-porn and explosions. My gaming time is limited enough without wasting a bunch of time repeating levels and trying to get skilled enough to advance.

Varies, of course. Games like FO3 and Skyrim were easy enough on Normal that setting them lower didn't make sense for me.

re: Two Worlds II, DRM, Tower Defense etc.

The Tower Defense like Warreni said is a totally separate game, it was released prior to TWII to sort of drum up interest. It really isn't related to the main game in any way other than being Two Worlds themed I guess. If you simply must have YATDG (Yet Another Tower Defense Game) then grab it when it goes on sale or I guess get the PSN version of the game. Don't feel like you are missing any vital part of TWo Worlds II by not having it though.

The motion blur didn't really bother me, I guess it's a YMMV thing, having said that the nice thing about the PC version is you can turn it off (through an ini file; not directly in the game options IIRC).

re: Additional 3rd party DRM on top of Steam, limited activations etc. Well those who have read my posts no how I feel on this subject :bomb: Having said that I bought TW II a while back before I even got into Steam and got the retail, the CE even. Then when the Pirates expansion came out on Steam I rebought the base that was on sale at the time and got the expansion. At the time I was blissfully ignorant of the DRM and the store page on Steam didn't help educate me.

If you don't see additional DRM listed on the Steam page definitely do not assume there isn't any. That list Provis linked to previously is a good resource to check.

http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/

I do really like Two Worlds II so I don't quite regret buying it but still I don't love the idea of the DRM. I can say that I did have experience with the mods on the Zuxxez (publisher; they own Topware) site and it was a good one. The Collector's Edition I bought was supposed to have a code for an exclusive quest (very minor quest, kill some bandits, get some boots that are okay for an early lvl character etc, you aren't missing much but not having it) but the code wasn't in the box. I emailed their support and they got back to me fairly quickly with the code.

I do seem to recall some of the mods on the forums there being a little pissy like Sophita said, but I don't know if they are actual employees and the name of the support person who sent me the code was different than those mods. Of course, like anything, YMMV but I think it should be possible to get a new key from them if you run out.

If you're really concerned I guess you can buy it from Gamersgate or Amazon (if they have it) because they guarantee to re-issue keys, something Steam should do but anyone who has dealt with Steam's customer service knows it's pretty abysmal. As much as I love Steam, their service SUCKS. Also if you rely on Gamersgate do be warned their support is slow. As molasses. In January. Going uphill.

If it comes down to it, I'm going to say it, I will find a way to get a game that I paid for to work whether that way be official or unofficial. It's not stealing if you paid for it. It's ridiculous to have to resort to that sort of thing but sometimes you get to a point where there's no other reasonable option. DRM is made to discourage people from stealing the game, not to keep out legitmate owners who paid. When the latter happens it's not working the way it's supposed to and I think it's perfectly reasonable to sidestep it. It's Digital Rights Management and you have a right to the game you paid for.

Anyhow TL;DR it's a good game so if you can get a decent price for it I'd say still try and go for it and grin and bear the crappy archaic draconian Euro-DRM. Alternately if it's a concern, get it on the consoles.

On the subject of Two Worlds II, the multiplayer aspect looks interesting to me and I always wanted to try it. Seems like it could be fun to have a big world to run around in. If anyone else has it and wants to get a game going I am up for it.
re: Two Worlds II, DRM, Tower Defense etc.

You appear to be quite the TW2 connoisseur (wow, I don't know how to spell that word), so a few questions, if you don't mind:

I got a dirt-cheap ($10) Royal Edition from Amazon a while back, and I've been looking for the best way to snag the Pirates expansion ever since. Didn't grab the double-pack during the Steam sale b/c I hate double-dipping (I've done it maybe twice in the last two years).

Should I grab the TW2 pack from PSN? I'm not a huge fan of playing big RPGs in my living room, but this seems like a good buy? If I don't do this and wait for a non-Steam sale on Pirates, would I have any issues getting that to recognize my physical copy of the base game? Thanks for the advice.
My gaming time is limited enough without wasting a bunch of time repeating levels and trying to get skilled enough to advance.
Yep.
That DRM list really needs an easier, more memorable domain.
I know. I always go 'What was that site again? Fidget-bow?'

Connnoisseur is a nice way of saying I spent way too damned much on that game.

I don't believe there should be any issues with the digital expansion over the retail base. As far as I can tell the digital version is a straight dump of the disc version right down to the same retail disc DRM.

Actually that's the whole reason for that DRM in the first place. The game was made in Europe and they still haven't quite caught on to the whole digital downloads thing the way the US has so retail copies of PC games are still popular. Euro-RPG gamers in particular are old school stodgy you will pry my disc from my cold dead hands hold outs. That sort of audience is very anti-Steam and as difficult as this is for me to understand they actually prefer this sort of disc based limited DRM over Steam. I suppose if you have like one 300 baud modem for the entire village run by pedal power though then Steam might be a problem.

You should have seen the Euro rage of Risen 2 being Steamworks. The Germans went all Frau Farbissina on Deep Silver.

As for how Two Worlds II plays on a big screen in the living room, I don't have the console version but I have played it via hdmi out on my TV and I think it's a game that plays well that way. It does have controller support for the 360 controller but from what I understand it only supports the 360 controller meaning if you have some other controller it won't work unless it can emulate Xinput. Also you have to have your controller turned on or plugged in before you launch the game. If you turn it on after the game won't recognize it and you will have to close it down and restart.
Crap.

So I told myself no on Darksiders II but all of the new info and stuff is making me want it...

With GMG's 25% off and my credit I can pick it up for $33.54

Ugh, tempting. Thoughts?
Yes buy it, you know you want to :) THQ Store has the DLC Pass though I've heard.

As for the Velvet GOTY console version that's $10 right now on PSN (PS3 version obvioisly), it's freakin gorgeous!! And before I bought it I found some HD version of the console version being played on youtube to check the motion blur like the one Sophita posted, decided to bite and it's not bad at all IMHO. I actually beieve that if you weren't actively looking for it you wouldn't see it, however motion blur is a very YMMV type of thing for people. It's a psychical thing for most people. It really does affect people in different ways. The fact that some people can get motion sick while others see the same effect and don't is evidence enough. it's also worth mentioning that the type of monitor being used also affects people differently. I am viewing it on a Sony Bravia 120Hz LCD @ 720p via HDMI

I will also add to anyone on the fence about getting the console version that:

 1. $10 to try out a game you want in a world of double dipping and saving so much via online sales surely allows you to "experiment" with that extra capitol every once in a while.
 2. 2: No matter how hard you try you always end up with console games that you can't have on the PC (this obviously only applies to console owners). There are always exclusive titles you HAVE to pick up on console (Asura's Wrath, Metal gear Solid, Enslaved, Castlevania LoS, etc, etc.) So if you think about it as an exclusive (might as well, since the DRM is a deal breaker for alot of people), and it's $10. then the decision is made, right?

Hmm, I would be curious to know if the multiplayer for the console versions (assuming it has it) works with multiplayer for people who have the PC version

Well there are sort of exceptions like running Xenoblade on Dolphin (and yes I bought the game even though I don't have a Wii) but I guess for those who have consoles there's some games that either don't get ported or the ports are crappy or have bad DRM or whatever.

Usually console stuff is more expensive. I see their sales and laugh at how much they are paying for stuff but on the other hand they can sell back and flip and what not too. In this case though the console version is just as cheap plus no crappy DRM so sounds like a decent deal to me.

I will also add that I have been glad I got a couple of games on Onlive instead of Steam because of crappy DRM (Batman: Arkham City & Assassins Creed: Revelations). Of course it didn't hurt that I got really good deals on them either. :p

Wasn't Flatout 1 in an indie bundle or something? I own it but not the rest of them.

Anyway, it says you get giftable copies for any that you already own if you buy the pack and I just bought that wheel controller so I might just get the whole pack and give away the first game.

*Edit: Or do you guys think the other Flatouts will end up in bundles too?
You can PM one of the mods on their forum to reset the activation limit, so it's not the absolute worst form of DRM. It's manageable, but I'd avoid buying it personally.
I don't give anything a pass if it requires you to email people to fix it. The DRM is just as bad as one where you can't do that, but it just means right now you can get around it with some hassle. Machine limitations is a terrible form of DRM - as is anything that doesn't let us truly own what we buy. If car manufacturers were able to limit a new car to three drivers in total, people would justifiably freak out.
FO3 sounds terrible. Are any of the others worthwhile?
If you actually want a good flatout game to play just pick up Ultimate Carnage.

Flatout 2 and Flatout Ultimate Carnage are both solid and fun to play games.

I have Ultimate Carnage but not 2. My understanding is UC is basically Flatout 2 but a ported to console version with a few extra features that was also released on PC. UC uses GFWL and still has a fairly active online community. Flatout 2 has its own servers a year or two ago it was still active but I'm not sure now. Think of UC as Flatout 2 deluxe if you dont mind GFWL.

Edit:

Also of note Flatout 3 has disappointed most of the fans and is made by a completely different developer.

I haven't played it, but FO3 is a different developer, and is said to be Flatout in name only. Flatout 1/2/UC have a fanbase. IIRC, Flatout UC is supposedly the peak. I picked up 1/2/UC a couple winter sales back, I've only spent 10 minutes on FO1, but it seemed decent (I just wasn't in the mood at the time.). But yeah, FO3 metacritic: 23... wow that's something... at least the user reviews are higher than Diablo 3  Would be nice if there was a cheaper pack minus FO3

Interestingly extra copies are giftable in the pack.
I just tried out Darksiders 1 as well on PC and managed to get it working there is a lot of steps that were involed so not sure what the right fix was for me.

First step: If you use nviada go to the games profile and turn on threaded optimization(for dual/quad core pc's im guessing?) also turned on some AA and AF

Second Step: Right click on Darksiders.exe(what ever the real name is in the install path) and check the "Disable Scaling on high DPI" apparently this is the switch a lot say will help.

Third Step: Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/?zmmmmdjtjkd
Found in this thread on page 3(http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1441279&page=3) And move the files

dinput8.dll
xbox360cemu.ini
xinput9_1_0.dll

Into the darksiders main folder and that is what helped enable and auto detect my wireless 360 controller. After all of those steps the game now runs flawlessly without any lag for me and the controller works amazing(Couldn't imagine using the KB/M with this game honestly)So hope that helps get the game running up for you ^^

Also regarding Darksiders 2: Gaint Bomb did a quick look with the developers in this video. and they said the game was being ran on a PC, no idea how amazing the PC was, but good sign they are demo'ing the game on PC soo.

Ya It must just be a case to case basis which is a shame as I really do want to play it, Even got the 5$ strategy guide offer the developers had awhile back ago when I rented the game...So if worst comes to worst and they don't remove the awful DRM i'll end up just buying it cheap on Steam and look at is a rental. As on the PC I can turn off the motion blur to help my poor eyes :D

But ya if the motion blur doesn't bother you I support WoS on this and Motoki the game from what I played in the first 5-6 hours is really great. And their is a ton of options and a really in depth crafting system in the game as well. Plus you get to fight Monkeys and Rhino's
