Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I saw that Rocksmith is now on Steam, and also saw that it is available on Amazon for direct download (and you can use the code).

Does anyone know - do the retail copies of the game also activate on Steam? I am thinking of picking up the bundle that has the guitar and cable and game, but I'd like to register the game on Steam.

Thanks!

It's Ubisoft

Dunno about Political Machine. Maybe for $2.50 but even then, the first still seems like the best.

Ether Vapor Remaster and Fairy Bloom Freesia are interesting looking. Anybody tried those?

Never played Viking on consoles. Was it good?

I played it a few years ago, but I remember it being a solid spectacle fighter. Wasn't straight action either, had some stealth areas. I enjoyed it enough to plan on picking it up sometime as long as it isn't a bad port.

Now I'm just wondering why it's in the Total War pack.
Viking was a really ghetto version of God of War.
Very repetitive hack and slash with no enemy variety.
I said this earlier in the thread. The game didn't really need a graphics update, but some more variety. Besides the lack of variety and minimal story every else the game offers is quite good. I mean I quite liked the combat however, the 12ish pure hours of it wasn't really to my liking.

I would say to wait for a sale on it. It is good and quite fun, but it isn't something that needs to played nor something at this very moment. Although I would at almost any discount it would be a good price to pick it up for.
If this game required me to roll back to 18-month-old drivers, scour the Steam forums for a custom .ini to make it work on 64-bit Windows, and crashed every 8 minutes it would probably still make me less frustrated and angry than real world politics.
I was going to disagree with you on the principle of defending a series I like a little better than you do, but then you said something completely sensible...
What you CAN do with that saved money is just buy SS:TSE. Get classic for $2.50. It's still such a nice looking game that the HD remake is kinda superfluous, though you won't go wrong getting the newer edition for $5.
It clearly won't be better than Dino D-Day.

I just started Darksiders II. Am I correct in thinking I should just play it with a controller? I'm already annoyed that I can't just click on something like "Back" to go back but actually have to hit the ESC key.

If you have a controller you should use it. I have no idea how some games can be played without one. Then again I'm coming from many many years of console gaming to PC gaming so it feels natural to me. I even play FPS games with a controller.

I'm the opposite in that I'm so used to KB+M that I resist using a controller even when I should. But I think this is an occasion where I definitely should.

My final opinion on XCOM and Dishonored, if anyone is interested.

Dishonored isn't great. It's workmanlike. It delivers a lot of what it promises but what it delivers just doesn't reach the quality of the greats of the genre. (And what genre it is is almost as much a question in and of itself, depending on how you divide the line between Thief and Deus Ex.) A lot of people earned their paychecks and delivered a pretty good game but this is not going to go in the history books, at least not any I'd write.

XCOM, however, is great. Looking at all the design changes between the new game and the old, you can't at least whistle in respect at what sort of philosophy animated this game. They took risks and it all paid off so beautifully into something I will say surpasses the original, at least in pure fun, even if it prunes, almost by necessity, some of the original's more chaotic elements.

Why would you play a PC FPS with a controller? Like the whole point of PC gaming is using the superior bar of soap!

Darksiders PC port was the same way. Best played with a controller unfortunately. Most of the PC ports seem to be doing more and more of this considering the 360 controller is damn near considered the prevalent PC game pad. Less time wasted I suppose.

Melee based 3rd person action/platforming games (Assassin's Creed, Amalur, Darksiders, Prince of Persia, etc) and driving games get the controller treatment from me pretty much automatically. I try to use KB+M for most other things, and for any 3rd person games with aimed shooting, but a 360 pad on my PC is priceless at times.

If I'm not playing multiplayer on the PC I will most likely use a gamepad when playing. I have my PC hooked up to a TV and I like to lean back and relax while I play not sit over my desk. I am nearly is good with a gamepad as with KB/M. I like that there is more gamepad support, I think some genres are better generally with gamepad while others KB/M and I its nice to have choice. I don't understand why people seem to balk at having a choice in how they play.

Edit: Also I need more people to play borderlands with so feel free to add me on steam everyone :)

I played it with a KB/M with no problems whatsoever and felt it controlled perfectly fine. Funny, I hit ESC for cancel/back/etc for nearly anything in any game and get pissed off beyond belief when that doesn't work heh. Quicker and easier to hit the key then to twitch my hand for a moment.

To me it depends on the game. Some games are just made for controller. Choplifter HD was a bit clunky with KB/M, but the controller made it funner. There is still bad button placement on it though that makes it hard to speed and shoot at the same time.

Mafia doesn't have native controller support I don't think, but any action sandbox type game is made for controller IMO.

I don't have my PC hooked up to a TV but I like to sit back in my computer chair and relax with a gamepad. The only genres where I really prefer KB/M are APRGs (Diablo, Torchlight), MMOs and certain RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age I, etc.) Don't really play RTS but KB/M is clearly the better choice there as well. If I plan on playing an FPS game online, I will get it for consoles so I can have my preferred controls and not be at a disadvantage against KB/M users.

I for one grew up using a gamepad for a FPS as I didn't get into playing them on pc til I was older and my first PC gaming experiences were C&C and Diablo series. So therefore, I don't like using a keyboard and mouse for FPS. If I am able I use a gamepad.

I actually agree 100% here. Dishonored delivers on what it promises but it's just not as good as the games it tries to be. XCOM is fantastic, and with ironman mode, it just makes the game so much more intense.

Also noticed a new game up, Fairy Bloom Freesia. Looks like a 2D brawler from Japan, published by Capcom. Gonna throw that on the wishlist.

Definitely Lead & Gold. The movie the line "feelin' like Clint Eastwood in a Sergio Leone's movie" is referencing is A Fistful of Dollars. In L&G, your goal is to bring bags of money back to your base while fighting off the enemy team.

Not much of a fan of L&G, and it's been on sale countless times before. I picked it up two years ago for $1, and hardly anybody was on. I had to play a game with one other player against all bots. Not very fun.

My initial thought but I don't recall any paradox published games being in any of these "budget" bundles ie: indie gala and groupees

3switched looks like bundle fodder. The last topware interactive published game that was on sale (x blades) ended up in a bundle.
Hmmmm... Zombie Driver HD out now... owners of the original get if for 1/2 off. Very tempted.
I believe I own the first one, so if people need a conduit for getting HD for 1/2 off, I'd be happy to help out.

I'm just not sure when I'll be around, so while I will get back to you, I can't guarantee immediately. Also, feel free to use someone else if you get tired of waiting, but if you do, please let me know.

Me too! :) (assuming you decide you want to host again and not take a break)
Definitely Lead & Gold. The movie the line "feelin' like Clint Eastwood in a Sergio Leone's movie" is referencing is A Fistful of Dollars. In L&G, your goal is to bring bags of money back to your base while fighting off the enemy team.

Why not For a Few Dollars More or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

Eastwood starred in the whole trilogy.
There is now a free-to-play version of Dwarfs!? on Steam. It includes the tutorial, arcade, and challenge modes. Other modes may be purchased separately.
Thanks for the update louiedog. Who's a good boy? You are!, Yes, you are!
Why not For a Few Dollars More or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

Because A Fistful of Dollars dealt with a single town, and 1 guy making all kinds of gold by playing one gang against another, which is more apropos to the plot of Lead and Gold than the other 2 movies. For a Few Dollars More dealing with 2 men hunting down a common bounty, and The Good The Bad and The Ugly which dealt with the relationship between 3 very different personalities crossing paths and needing each other at some point to reach a shared goal despite wanting to just get rid of them. Both of those movies swept across the landscape (different towns, settings, etc.) while A Fistful of Dollars stayed central to one town, the money flowing through it and those attempting to get their share of it. Thus being more closely linked to Lead and Gold and the player pretending to be "the man with no name", Manco, Joe, or Blondie as some call him.
