Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Hm.. makes me wonder if GamersGate will have the same sale. IGN discount + G2PO stacking would be nice. Does GG ever do "autumn" sales? Or have they matched any of Steam's prices during the Steam autumn sale?
Im hoping for that too....a 4 pack on Gamersgate plus the two discounts would be tits.

For those that may have noticed that GTA: Vice City was taken down from the Steam store earlier this week, Gaming Blend has posted some information about the decision to pull the game from the store. Apparently it is over the licensing lapsing for one song (Michael Jackson's - Wanna Be Startin' Something"). If you already own the game, you can still download it. It appears that Rockstar is looking into the problem and plan on re-releasing the game as soon as possible.

Figures. Some guy who's been dead for a while is behind it. >.< That site is cr*p, "see that's what wrong with digital downloads -- they'll never triump over shipping round plastic pieces around." -- Seriously, how many games now require client software for play? (Steamworks, Origin, UPlay, GFWL) ...which renders the whole meat space bit into a 15-24 character alphanumeric string.

This is exactly what I suspected when it was pulled. The soundtrack has such heavy hitters it must be some task pulling them all together. And the songs having a ten year license makes perfect sense.

A LOT of PC games requires some digital client-service, these days.

If gamers really want DRM-FREE games, you'd have to look at GOG or any digital store that might actually carry some DRM-FREE games - and see if what you're looking for is there.

But, seriously - if there's a licensing issue, the game being for sale will get pulled...until it gets resolved. It's the way it goes. So might be wise to ALWAYS back-up your games, if you do buying them digitally.

"Situations like this is just another reason why that “all digital” future is looking less and less promising. While digital downloading appears to be convenient, it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to accessibility and availability."

This comment really irks me. While there are some games that have been pulled off of various online digital distribution stores, it still remains a rarity. It is up to developers now to ensure that there music licensing is future proof. Otherwise, release games with new and original music that are made in house. Sure I'm suggesting that popular songs in video games be a thing of the past. But somehow all of the music games like Rockband and Guitar Hero were able to keep most, if not all, of its extensive track library from game to game. But then again, those games are a rather new addition to the gaming world. Additionally, the ability to add custom soundtracks really has diminished, for me, the need to have amazing popular soundtracks.

On a grander scheme, there have been so many television shows that their DVD releases have been postponed or cancelled due to music licensing. Malcom In The Middle & King of the Hill, I'm looking at you.

Regardless, I'm happy that Rockstar has acknowledged the issue and is working on a solution to put the game back in the Steam store.

Not to mention whenever a game is 'pulled' off of Steam it's only pulled from the store. If you've already bought it you're still free to download/install repeatedly.

Fake Edit: Never mind you already pointed that out.

Granted, you can never say that with 100% confidence about the future but, at least for now that's the case.
Remove song from game. Nobody truly misses it. Problem solved.
It's not actually that simple, of course. Do you remove it from the game as it is stored on Steam's servers? Now you have the people who bought the game when the song was licensed having their digital copies downgraded, and they have every reason to complain. Do you instead replace what's available on the store with the post-October 2012 version and keep both on the server, but have the original only accessible by those who bought it before the change? That might work until you have 25 versions of a large game stored on their servers for all of the individual spans of time between different licensing changes, and multiply that across several different games.

If I ever own the rights to a song and license it to some other work, I'm working out future royalty agreements in advance. I'd rather miss out on future renegotiation than have a game or movie exist with my song excised.

Well they did that with Plants vs. Zombies which, not so coincidentally enough, also involved Michael Jackson. The 'Thriller' zombie was removed from the game including preexisting purchases via a patch.

No, the lesson is that Michael Jackson's corpse is a fucking asshole.

Just for the record, Klei's new game Don't Starve is still in beta but I rate it as a swing and a miss. I'd call it "Don't Run Out And Die On Purpose Because You So Desperately Crave Some Stimulation Apart From Boring Tedious Easy Farming For Crafting Materials."

I don't think people are playing GTA for the music, so therefore their copies aren't downgraded. 99.9% of people wouldn't even notice if that song was patched out. It's one of those things where people would make a big stink over it just for the sake of making a stink, and even then only if someone told them it happened, but in reality their gameplay experience will not change.

Counter point - GTA is actually one of the few games to release their soundtracks commercially. I remember the radio stations being so popular each one had its own CD and they were boxed together.

Again, not really that big of a deal for one song, but the music/radio stations in GTA were a pretty big deal back then.

Not everyone feels that way. If there were actually no value to having licensed music in games, devs wouldn't license music for their games in the first place.

And yeah, one song out of an extensive soundtrack might not be missed, but do they just let the rest of the soundtrack lapse and replace it with something generic? Where do you draw the line at people not noticing?

Oh but they are playing for the music. It's not the primary place I go to listen to each song of course, but it's a huge part of gta games. Especially with R*'s world building and 99% of the soundtrack coming from in-game sources rather than a score the radios are important.

I checked and the game always plays "Billie Jean" as its first song. I thought it might have been WBSS.

Didn't GTA 3 have no licensed music (just a bunch of made-up stuff)? Obviously it's an attraction for the more recent ones but you could certainly make a successful GTA game without licensed music.

That may be true for the handhelds, but for mainline gtas the toothpaste is out of the tube.

I want to download a real old Stretch Armstrong mix show and drive to that. It'd be so so much better than Game FM and I like him a lot.

GTA3 had a bunch of licensed music, yes.

GameFM had a lot of underground hip-hop on it (Royce Da 5'9''; Nature; Black Rob; Agallah; Sean Price; etc).
FlashbackFM seemed to be in love w/ Scarface: The Movie - The Soundtrack.

Thanks, I was going to point out that GTA series actually released the in-game music stations on CD. Depends, if it is a song that you love/played at a memorable moment. I would note that at least GTA:VC (PC) allowed you to point at your own directory of MP3s for a station. That would allow you to somewhat emulate the original stations. The talk radio was absolutely killer.

IIRC, GTA really broke ground in having large licensed soundtracks for the in-game radio stations. It also really helped to set the period mood. Love Fist anyone? =D
Granted, you can never say that with 100% confidence about the future but, at least for now that's the case.
True.

It's always a good idea to download your game and back it up somewhere - just in case this changes in the future; or worst comes to worse and the digital distributor you bought your games from goes away.

Problem is - many of us have ridiculous backlogs and might not always have the time, HDD space, or enough discs to do all these downloads and back-ups! :whistle2:X

I'm not saying music isn't important to the experience, I'm saying people aren't playing for the music specifically. One track isn't changing the experience at all. Nobody is going to play the game without the song and say, "Hey, that one song is missing and I remember being there before. This game is now unplayable."

Most GTA's on the PC since GTA3 PC have the MP3 Radio Station.

For licensed soundtracks - yep, GTA definitely broke all kinds of new ground.

Though, for what it's worth - Vampire: Bloodlines has some of my favorite mixtures of some licensed music & (Womb Music's) original score.

Steam lets you disable automatic updating on a per-game basis, right? Does it then let you play a game without downloading an outstanding update?
I'm not saying music isn't important to the experience, I'm saying people aren't playing for the music specifically. One track isn't changing the experience at all. Nobody is going to play the game without the song and say, "Hey, that one song is missing and I remember being there before. This game is now unplayable."
You'd be surprised what some people would get upset over.

Word is out and it's being discussed. Whatever they do to resolve this isn't going to be a stealth alteration. This is the Internet. People will complain over anything.

Think is, if they did re-release GTA:VC PC w/out MJ's song...

...You could always buy the single itself for "Wanna Be Starting Something" or MJ's "Thriller" album from somewhere (digital store or a CD at a store);
rip the song to the HDD;
toss it in the MP3 Station's folder;
and get going! :D

No. As soon as you try to play the game, it forces the update on you.

I would sure be bummed if they cut "Crockett's Theme." So essential.

Yep.

You'd have to ALSO disable "Steam Community In-Game" for that game, as well.

Thing is - if a new patch introduces new problems, you might not want the update!
There's reasons you might want to revert to an older version of the game!
Especially if say a new official patch BREAKS your modded-game version from working.

It also depends on if the dev's/publishers decide to ALWAYS force new version on you, even if you have Disabled both Auto-Update and Steam Community In-Game.
Most of the time - it is FORCED.

This had been a bit of an issue early this summer with the Game of Thrones mod lagging Crusader Kings II updates -- and the not-really situation with disabling updates in steam. (FYI, GamerGate sells the only non-steam version of CK2 for USA. The GG version does not (reportedly) force updates upon you like steam does.

Will not!

I was tempted to start typing out a mock Internet argument to have with you, but before I started typing, my brain had already gotten to the part where I claim that there are no girls on the Internet and it stopped being funny.

Shoite, what an interesting development to walk into. On the plus side, this brings with it some healthy GTA chat, which I find delightfully nostalgic. On the downside, Vice City is no longer available on the Steam Store.

I'm happy I have my physical PC version on hand for the worst of worst case scenarios. Though, sadly, I'd rather have a PS2 version at the ready, considering the issues Vice City's PC port brings. (For example, absolutely no sound on some digital versions without the physical CD. Rockstar, how could you allow such a thing?)
