Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

And since we're on Supercars 2, this gives me an ideal opportunity to repost this:

For you Half-Life Fans - the Black Mesa Mod team is finally releasing a section of the game to the community on Sept 14th!

Whoa, that's huge news. I'm sure most fans were getting tired of seeing occasional articles sparking renewed interest but, otherwise, providing nothing more than screen shots and promises.

If it even lives up to some of the hype, Black Mesa will make for an excellent excuse to replay the original.

I'll believe it when I see it. At least it seems much more likely this time as it's a concrete date that's not too far away. The only reason I still have any faith that Black Mesa Mod team will succeed in what they set out to do is their absolute embrace of Valve Time.

As someone who played a lot of first person shooters in the 90s I'm used to never playing announced mods that look good. The people with enough talent to do something cool always got hired by a developer long before the mod was finished.

Anyone remember the old "Plastic Folding Looking Glass" thingy. I think Elite and some Domark games used that kind of protection.

HORRIBLE. Could never make out what the bloody letters were.....

I kinda wish they brought back those kinds of "physical drm." Maybe as a collectible b/c those things bring be back. Better than activation limits or TAGE

I don't know man... Those activation software UIs make me feel all fuzzy inside. Lets me know that someone's got an eye on me, protecting me from myself. ;)

One of the more creative forms of copy protection was in Infocom's Leather Goddess of Phobos (1986)
The game featured no copy protection as such, but like many Infocom games, it included puzzles that were nearly impossible to solve without hints from the accompanying documentation (the so-called feelies). Leather Goddesses included the following feelies, one of which was quite uncommon among Infocom's games:
 • A small scratch and sniff card which bore seven numbered areas (at certain points in the game, the player would be instructed to scratch a certain number and then whiff the resulting odor. Given the possibilities for a game featuring a "lewd mode", the scents were relatively innocuous, such as pizza and chocolate.)
 • The Adventures of Lane Mastodon, a 3-D comic book containing vital hints to the game
 • 3-D glasses for the Lane Mastodon comic book
 • A double-sided map of the catacombs
This creative take on copy protection earned Leather Goddesses a SPA Excellence in Software Award for Best Software Packaging in 1987.

And yes, it spawned a sequel: Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2: Gas Pump Girls Meet the Pulsating Inconvenience from Planet X! (1992)

As a youth, I copied my friend's "Starflight" by getting a large sheet of graph paper and meticulously hand-copying the paper star map the game used as DRM.

I obviously had way too much time on my hands back then and probably should have been off discovering girls.

And, if I just waited, I could have gotten it PLUS Starflight 2 for only six bucks!

That is awesome! I would totally trade "always online" DRM for that.

Indie Gala Happy Hour has been on for a while. You can snag a full bundle for $1.50-$2.00 if you visit the Group Buy Thread here.
Looks like Waveform is the new daily deal. -75% $6.99 $1.74

81/100 Metacritic, but mixed user-reviews.

Any thoughts on this one? Looks tempting.
I almost snagged this on the indie gala store for 2.50 with the use of half my points. Glad I waited, now I can even get the DLC with it for 2.

I haven't given the demo a try, but if I get any played tonight I'll make sure to leave a quick impression here. No promise to play, though, as I'm on call for work.

Waveform looks cool and is cheap as hell, I'm downloading the demo. 902MB. Weird it's only downloading 631.1MB after giving me the previous number and then saying something like "copying existing content".
Waveform looks like bundle fodder. Will wait till it shows up I the inevitable indie royale.
Yeah, it has "Indie Royale" written all over it.

Some neat Steam-related news: the first release of the infamous Half-Life remake/re-imagining Black Mesa will finally be out September 14th. Apparently it includes the full game except the regrettable Xen section at the end which will be released later...probably a lot later.

I know this is the wrong thread but since you all are talking about old games, anyone remember the game with the blue and pink ants that would run around in a maze, had sex with each other, then have babies. Your job was to kill them all by placing bombs and mines all over the place. I forgot the name and have probably spent an hour or so searching google for it. I am only 21 so that is the first computer game I remember besides microsofts pinball which is easily found online.

More relevant, I remember in high school computer class someone brought a copy of counter strike and we proceeded to load it to all the computers and would have 45 minute CS LAN parties after we did 5 minutes of work.

sounds like you're describing daikatana
sounds like you're describing daikatana
Nope, just looked it up and that's not at all it. Haha I guess i didn't describe it very well. It's literally an over the top view of like a grey maze with little virtual ants (blue are male and pink are female) who have sex with each other when they run into each other, then about 10 seconds later the female pops out some baby ants, who in time, get bigger and become adults who can then mate with their brothers and sisters haha. All the while you are trying to control the ant population by strategically placing bombs and mines. But you only have a limited amount of bombs and mines so it made the game difficult. I've asked all my friends and nobody remembers it let alone the name. I figured out of all you diehard PC gamers someone will know it.

Also, if it helps anyone to remember, they made a funny sound when they were having sex. Sounded like a male breathing heavily, and when the lady gave birth it made a popping sound.

When I google daikatana all I get is a FPS shooting game. If that's what you are referring to then that is not it. Google "maze-o-rama", it looks very similar to that but with the gameplay I described.

I am so sorry for missing the last Happy Hour guys!

I have been out of town visiting my grandfather who has not been doing too well health wise.

I have all of the copies now and I got them for $1.53 a person.

I am shooting out the PMs now!

Sorry again!
Waveform is pretty cool, most indie games don't appeal to me at all but this one's gotta be worth $1.74.
I'm currently checking out some gameplay videos to see if Waveform is my type of game. Thus far, it looks fascinating, making the player control the path instead of the unit itself. (Reminds me a bit of the frequency "mini-game" from Arkham Asylum.)

Though the bundle possibility is high, it's hard to argue with $1.74. (Plus, it's only 24 cents for the DLC.)

Yeah, controlling the path caught me off guard. I didn't get an accurate sense of the gameplay at all from watching the trailer, I had the impression you controlled the cursor that rides the path. The gameplay's pretty unique, for me.

Any idea what platform it was for? You've now spread the disease to me.

Waveform has a demo that's less than a GB. I played it and my conclusion is that it's not worth $2 so I'll wait for a bundle.

I put in about 50 minutes today, and I can say that for those on the fence, it'll be best to wait for a bundle. It is fun, but nothing to rush toward. Between that and the Basement Collection, my gaming time today has mostly gone to BC. It'll be a slow game to come off my backlog.

For the PC. After mentioning it on this thread, I have been thinking about it quite a bit and I just remebered it was with rats and not ants. So after a quick google search I found this http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/rats.html. I actually found the link in a forum from someone else looking for the game but don't know if I can post that link or not.

It sucks the full version is 20 bucks. I'll search around later too see if it's cheaper elsewhere or maybe the demo version will be enough. Either way its back to bed for me right now. Just wanted to post this so I don't have anyone else searching with no hope in sight.

Rats do make a lot more sense than ants given the premise.

I can't imagine anyone paying $20 for it on PC, especially when it's only two bucks on the iPhone. I'm going to hazard a guess that the $20 price point is just to make the $30 collection of all that dev's games seem like a bargain.

Yeah, I considered the iPhone version but after reading through the reviews I see it's a dumbed down version of the original. It doesn't look as fun and they changed the sounds the rats make, the original sounds were what made the game funny. Also, you can't change what item you want to use or zoom out fully.

20 bucks does seem ridiculous for the full version especially considering the game is at least 15 years old. It is a fun game, we should all get the dev to put it on greenlight so it can go on sale for 2.50 on steam. But I know that will never happen.
