Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I remember there was a rumor or maybe it was just speculation that one of the hardware things Valve was working on was a device that would stream video from your computer to your TV. Any news on that?

Valve seems super committed to TV PC gaming so personally I think there is a good chance Valve could be working on a solution for gamers who don't have their PC near their TV or bring over their laptop.

I used big picture mode a few months ago and liked it. I had just had surgery and wasn't able to sit at in my chair yet. This made it so I could still play some games on my PC. Granted I should of used this time to play my PS3 since I haven't played a game on it in like a year.
So apparently you can try out Big Picture on your PC. It does its job of making Steam easily accessible for people who are actually going to use Steam on their TVs, but for PC users it's a bit pointless. Restart your client for the update, then click the Big Picture icon in the top right to try it out. Not for me, but if you're into that sort of thing or you want to see what it is, hands-on.
What a bourgeoisie focused feature! I don't have a TV, let alone a "living room"*. Aren't TVs kinda 20th century anyhow? It's all about computers and the internet now.

* Does this term imply there are "unliving rooms", i.e. "zombie rooms"?

This sale runs until December 10th. The Winter Sale starts on December 20th.

If Valve doesn't have some sort of major sale from the 10th to the 20th, then I will be forced to consider December a major disappointment for them.

I think you are misusing the term PC.

Do people currently install Steam on their tv? Xbox? tablet? dvd player? Where else would I try using Big Picture? And regardless of whether or not my video signal goes to a monitor or tv, it is still a PC that generates it.

Obviously Big Picture is not meant for desktop gamers . . . I didn't realize it was advertised as such, nor do I think anyone in this thread would mistakenly make that assumption.

The awesome thing about Big Picture mode, when it comes time for me to build a new gaming rig, I can toss my old one out in the living room and use it to play platformers and console type games out there, and more traditional PC games at the desktop.

Woohoo, won my first steamgifts giveaway, Krater. Now who wants to play some Krater with me?

*crickets...tumbleweed*

huh, huh, c'mon people!!!

BP is a little counter-intuitive for me. One of the many reasons for me weening off consoles and back to PC was for the KB&M usage in FPS as well as the "more aggressive" posture when gaming. I found that whenever I was playing on a console, be it BF3 or Forza, I was always upright, sitting on the edge of my seat (i.e. not taking advantage of the possible "relaxed positioning" the 10' interface affords). I did seriously consider upgrading my HTPC when BP was announced, but then why do I have consoles. I just don't feel PC gaming should be a cater to as many possible type technology because you end up losing something in the translation. IMO
Since you brought this up, how the hell is this actually supposed to work? Is it just for people with media center PCs or people willing to buy a 100' HDMI cable to run from the computer room to the living room?
I have a 50' one. Seriously. It actually works pretty well too but with ones that long you have to be sure you get a well made one or else there can be signal degredation and noise and all that not so good stuff.

There are apparently various wireless solutions but I have not found a good one yet that doesn't have issues with latency, dropped connections etc and is suitable for gaming.

Of course if you have a decent gaming laptop (or just play something that doesn't require a hefty machine like Torchlight) then needing a long cable isn't even an issue.

Running PC games on a big TV is actually a really cool setup. It's like a console but not all crappy fuzzy lower resolution and you can use mods.

I actually keep meaning to make my current PC a HTPC and get a new one, but stuff keeps coming up preventing me from buying a new PC like the dog (not the one in the picture) tearing a ligament that cost $900 at the vet and me getting that shiny new Galaxy Note II Phablet for $650 because I like my $30 a month plan and refuse to go on a contract etc etc.

I actually have a front projector in the same room as my PC, and yes, I do use it as an HTPC at times. Never have used it for games, tho. Problem is, I need wireless controllers, and I haven't managed that yet.
What... A feature that isn't for everyone?!?!?!?! Like every other feature on steam? Insanity... damn you Valve trying to appeal to all different types of people!

I may end up using big picture mode once I get a mini hdmi to hdmi cord because, and I know this may seem odd, I would like the audio to go through the TV I would be using. And it would be really nice since I have set up my wireless PS3 controller on my PC. I could finally sit back on my couch and play Saints Row 3 and Dark Souls rather than the current using a wireless controller while still sitting at my computer desk.

This may surprise you but some people do shockingly have their TV and computer in the same room.
Overly-defensive much?

So I'm the only one that cares, but yay for me finally getting Secret of Moneky Island for 75% off. :D

I'm pretty much ready to bite. Fairly sure 75% off is good.

Just surprised LeChuck's Revenge isn't 75% off too.

Which Monkey Island is this again? Monkey Island Monkey Island? Remake Monkey Island? Telltale Monkey Island?

I think I own one but I always get them confused.
Use coupon NOV20OFF to bring it down to $0.79
I guess it would be "the remake." But it's just the original game, with updated graphics and voicework (that are optional). I actually like the original graphics better, and you can switch at the press of a button.

I really like how the Monkey Island remake AV* update allows you to quickly toggle between new and classic.

* Audio Visual, not Japanese shorthand for Adult Video.

I think there are tons of 'console' type games on Steam that offer a relaxed atmosphere that can be enjoyed while kicking it on the sofa. Many of these arent available on actual consoles. I'm thinking like tower defense, turn based strategy, some of the more story based adventure games, and some RPGs.

Plus, not everyone has a console, nor wants to buy games for their console when I can get the same game for less than half on the PC.

I'm really not excited about big picture mode, for one my tv is a 43" LCD with only 720p, number two is I have a wired X360 controller and the cord blocks the way(I have a small living room) thus making it not ideal for my situation. I'll stick with gaming on my desk on a 24" LED monitor instead

I'm tempted to buy it....but it's a topware game and they are groupees/indie gala bundle whores these days

I actually didn't think that until you mentioned it but now that you did I just got a whole new meaning to Monkey Island.
Overly-defensive much?
Is that how I came off as? Silly text not being capable to convey expressions well... But I would say, "not really". Perhaps more passive aggressive, but not really overly defensive or even defensive. Maybe it would help to look at what I wrote to see exactly what it was, but....... nah.
I actually didn't think that until you mentioned it but now that you did I just got a whole new meaning to Monkey Island.
I would assume most gamers, especially console ones, would have taken it as Audio Video because I know I did. Being in video game classes at school I kind of want to try thinking of AV as that from now on just to see how much more interesting and weird it makes everything....

That is pretty awesome.

Saving money to maximize game-playing possibilities is what this website is all about. I believe an old CAG quote of mine is "A penny saved is a penny that can be spent on another game deal."

Something along those lines, at the very least.

You arguably don't need L4D1. L4D2 has most (if not all) of the L4D1 maps ported into it. That said there are some people who prefer L4D1 from a mechanics perspective (guns are held awkwardly high in L4D2, melee weapons make things a little easier, overall atmosphere too 'bright and cheery' for L4D, etc.).

Since you're totally new to the franchise, I'd just grab L4D2. Unless you think you're going to be a dedicated player with refined tastes that make you pine for the 'older school' version I doubt you'd ever fire up L4D1.
$7.49 for the Left 4 Dead bundle is pretty good right? I don't have neither of them.
I'd say it depends on if you have friends to play with. Random people can be fun to join up with and playing solo turns into meh, but the games shine with friends.

I'd say that I'm a single player & a completist so I'd probably go for the bundle if anything. How's the single player campaign in them?
I'd suggest checking out Sleeping Dogs when it hits a price point you fancy ($13.60 two weeks back did it for me). It's a refreshing GTA-style game set in Hong Kong with some Batman AA/AC style melee combat. The visual styling in the game is quite HK-cinema-esque, and walk the line between violent gang member and undercover cop.
Great suggestion! I actually took advantage of that same sale :) I totally agree with you about the game. It really is refreshing in all sorts of ways. I simply love the character designs, voice work, story, and overall action. I really hope this does well enough to warrant a sequel based on what I've played so far.

I say go with the bundle. I think L4D1 is an easier experience to get into, since the choices are more limited - though I would also say, more carefully chosen. L4D2 has some great levels and improved gameplay, but the original L4D campaigns were not designed for all the extras.

Not much point in playing them single player with the bots, though it's possible if you want to, find some friends and get them to go in on it, that's the best way to play it.
I'd say that I'm a single player & a completist so I'd probably go for the bundle if anything. How's the single player campaign in them?
I'm similar and tend to agree with others in that solo gameplay in L4D is...meh. It's not bad, per se, it's just I'd rather spend my time soloing something like Dead Island instead (which I insanely love). I had it (L4D2) on 360 and now refuse to buy it on PC at any price as I'll likely be solo again and it just is not fun to me in that way.

There isn't really a 'campaign' -- it's the same maps as multiplayer you just play with and against bots. It's okay as a solo experience but, again, not worth buying both as the L4D1 maps are in L4D2.
^ This is also true. My personal experiences with the L4D community are pretty bad.
I played L4D1 on the 360 and L4D2 on the PC. I don't know if it was because it was a year apart or what, but it's probably the only time where I went from an excellent console community filled with players willing to help newcomers and just being interested in having fun to impatient jerks on the PC who kicked anyone the instant they aren't playing the "right" way. It wasn't even directed at me, except for one game where I had a technical hiccup just after spawning as the tank and got kicked, despite single handedly killing a survivor moments before and topping my team every round previously. Watching the way they treated new players really turned me off to the game.

If you don't have friends to play L4D and you want a zombie shooter, wait until winter sale and grab Killing Floor.

Or buy it from me and get it now :)

I'll sadly second that randoming in pubs on L4D is a horrible experience. It's an amazing contrast from the TF2 community. The game has appreciable aspects even solo, and at such a low price it might still be worth it, but yeah, don't bother with randoms. And especially don't play Versus mode, which is for hardcore players only.
I have date as well, but it's actually by game release date. I do that because I have a crappy time making decisions and if I don't know what I want to play, I'll just start with my oldest release date and go from there. A few people have called me a nerd, but if I'm to be labeled I prefer geek...there's a difference. :p
Nah that's smart and makes sense. people just wanna hate on creativity and passion for things so labels are given lol

You crazy

I want to thank all the regulars for their input on L4D. I'll probably sit it out until I can get some friends on board as well. Had no idea their was no real single player "campaign" in them.

Agreed with this, too. Although I think L4D is a better experience due to the ability to play as infected, if you don't have a group of friends the KF community is much better.

I think I might bite on Orcs 2 now. is all of the dlc worth it? Also lets talk some Afterfall: Insanity :) i played a demo of this game on Onlive, its a Dead Space ripoff but its not bad. I'm tempted to buy it.

I'd say if you've never played see if you can split a 'GOTY' two-pack: that way it's only $5 each for the base game plus DLC. I got it on release in a two-pack with a discount for around $10. Don't regret it, played co-op with a friend, 50+ hours, etc. but now I'm not really motivated to get the DLC separately because it would be around $4 even at 75% off.

The traps and items it adds are pretty superfluous but it does add about three new levels per DLC.

Afterfall are the ones who did the 'If we sell 10 million copies at $1 we will give it to everyone for that price otherwise we will give it to charity' publicity stunt nonsense.

They picked Amnesty International but them Amnesty International rejected them citing the game was too violent for them to be associated with it. After that I don't know if it that money ever did go to another charity as I could find no reference to that happening.

Someone just asked today if they money ever did go to charity on the Steam community forum but the dev ignored that question instead worry about people commenting on the non-Enhanced Edition version.

Also these guys used to go places like RPGWatch and the Greenlight forums with multiple user accounts with very bad ESL and go on and on about how great the game was and everyone should get it pretending to be regular users when it was obvious it was one (or more) of the devs.

Also, the Polish press pretty much trashed it http://www.gry-online.pl/S020.asp?ID=7904

I'm surprised at all the bad experiences in L4D2 that people are having here. Maybe it's because I got used to the way random groups in WoW were, but I usually don't care if a group is running too slow. I'm in it for the experience, not a speed run for the most part. Sometimes the lollygaggers annoy me, but I usually just handle it as part of the overall group composition. There aren't too many things that piss me off in the game. Usually it's people who leave their mic open and won't close it, or those who are intentionally trolling the team and trying to get everyone killed. They usually get kicked. If not, I just leave and find another game.

Yes it is MUCH better when played with friends, however on the flip side, most of the folks I've added to my friends list on Steam are folks I've played random games with, and we end up adding each other afterwards. I should throw out there that I only play campaign on Normal mode. It tends to be the difficulty that most random groups can handle without everyone ragequitting and shouting at each other, though ragequitting still does happen if the group wipes on a map which never ceases to amaze me since it's just like, yeah we lost, so what? Let's go back and try again! Versus mode is for those people who have both a lot of time, and basically for friends because trying to coordinate with a group of random players never works in that mode, and hence I don't play it.
