Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Good ports these days sadly seem to mean competent ports with questionable KBAM controls. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a middling port with a controller than not have the chance to play a lot of games. But it's a little sad that simply being adequate is celebrated, like that Borderlands 2 love letter from a while ago. They made such a big deal about having standard features.
Is there some way to activate couch mode ? I watched the video on the link earlier in the thread and it showed having a button in the upper right hand corner of the screen to activate it but there is nothing there on my Steam client. I closed and restarted it, manually checked for updates as well and it still doesnt show up.
Make sure you go to Steam > Settings > Beta Participation > Change.

You have to opt-in to receive the beta and then it'll simply restart the client and the button will be there.

That did it .. thanks !

And then as for the Big Picture Mode .... wow. I LOVE IT. So .. so much easier to navigate from the couch. I am definitely dedicating my living room PC to a gaming station with this and will just leave the office PC for K/M games.

Great start on big picture mode. As a person who exclusively uses his pc on his TV from the couch, this is pretty awesome.

The web browser is decent. I wish the zoom scaled better and had a zoom out button. Also there is no way to exit full screen flash video with controller.

Ah, I remember the days when the MS Sidewinder was the gold standard for PC controls. I still have one somewhere.

I do scratch my head at those who think Trine controls better with a controller. I've played it both ways (original on PC and 2 on PS3) and mouse-keyboard is superior, IMO.

So far, the only games I felt needed controllers were Shank and Alice: Madness Returns.

I think it's odd that the First Person Browser "looks" around with the left stick ... and yeah I think Trine controls better with a controller, currently playing Trine 2 in 3D. Platforming with a keyboard and mouse?

Found something else I didn't like, I started Trine 2 from BPM using the controller, the Trine 2 Launcher pops up and back to needing the keyboard to "Start Trine 2". So I guess it'll only be seemless with games that just start when you start them ... and yes I'm typing with my keyboard.

For whatever reason *most 3rd person games I play feel better either on my xbox 360 controller or my playstation 3 controller (setup with motionjoy.) I think the only 3rd person game I played I preferred mouse and keyboard was dead space.

Trine does not exactly have intense platforming. It's more of a puzzle game, and the abilities like drawing boxes, aiming the grappling hook, etc are most of that game's action, and are far better with a mouse. Speed and twitch based platformers I'd probably use a controller for, but there's little reason to do it in a game like Trine. WASD to move, space to jump, mouse 1 to shoot the grappling hook is not exactly rocket science.

Platforming can work fine with a keyboard, depending on the game, especially when that game involves aiming with a cursor, which is horrible with a controller. The game seems like it was designed around a mouse, especially the thief and wizard.

As this says, it isn't really that much of a platformer, and it is far easier to aim arrows and draw boxes with the mouse than it is with the controller.

I dunno, I haven't had much of a problem aiming arrows and drawing boxes in Trine with my controller. Sure, it's a little slower, but it hasn't really affected my gameplay too negatively. I remember when I first bought Trine, I started out using my KB/M and after a while, I was like eh fuck this, and switched to a controller. I was a lot more comfortable that way. But ah... to each their own, eh?

Wow. Digital: A Love Story was quite good and will probably stick with me for awhile. I hope Analogue is half as good whenever I pick it up.

There's less love in Analogue but you'll like it. Also try don't take it personally babe.

Actually, Digital felt a bit TOO formulaic for me. I liked it but I couldn't feel anything for the character you were supposed to like.

I find the platforming to be easier with a controller in Trine 2. Yes, the aiming is better with a mouse.. but it's not "horrible". I aimed fine with my 360 and PS3 controller, and I played through the game twice (on PS3 and PC). The game doesn't require anywhere near the accuracy of a mouse, but I agree it can help.
The main problem with using a ps3 controller on your pc is that the controller sucks. 360 controller is near perfect, save for d-pad issues in fighters. I don't play fighters, so it's perfect.
That's more preference than anything. The 360 controller's d-pad is a bigger disadvantage IMO. It's not just fighting games you'd need a good d-pad in, but platformers as well. Try playing either of the Ys games and you'll see how much better the reaction time is with a better d-pad.

I don't know what advantages 360 gamepads have, other than a better layout (which is preference) and maybe tighter analogue sticks (again preference?)

I think it would be great if Valve integrated controller support to every game without native support already included. However unlikely, it would please me very much.

Out of town and catching up a little. Blood Money is definitely the best of the Hitman collection and I didn't see it mentioned, but it's part of Square Enix's streaming game service beta. It's free but there are occasional ads during your play session. Obviously a copy on your hard drive is superior, but anyone who just wants to better demo the game, revisit a level or two without buying again, or is waiting for the new game to be part of the collection may find it useful. I tried it out for 10 minutes last week and it seemed to work pretty well.

Downloading that right now. I seem to remember RPS having a bunch of articles about that game which all said to ignore the art style.

About Digital, it's the first VN I've played (is that the right term) and the unique style of storytelling blew me away. I'm looking forward to don't take it personally babe now.

I'd love that, too. I realize it likely wont happen but it would be really nice to always have the option.

It's all just preference really. To me the 360 one just feels right across the board, whereas the ps controller, essentially unchanged for over a decade, has things I just don't care for. I'll list them here, and again, just my opinion.

1. Too small. I have maybe average size hands, maybe even smaller, and the controller still doesn't fit comfortably for me.

2. Orientation of shoulder buttons. I find it tough to get the right button in quick reaction situations, almost always catching the wrong one. This is one where over time I'm sure I would adjust, but having to adjust over time generally means unintuitive design.

3. Analog sticks are too close to each other. If my thumbs are positioned too far inside on the analogs, I actually run the risk of my thumbs getting in the way of each other. I also find it more difficult to go up to the arrows quickly than coming down to the d pad.

The controller is definitely usable, I just find the 360 works for me better in comfort and usability.

Most VNs have a more traditional style story-telling. Think Phoenix Wright only written by Kojima (So unedited streams of pointless words) only without Kojima's clumsy yet energetic attempts at themes and without any of the puzzles or player interaction of a normal game.

999 is a great example of one that actually has gameplay (But sparse enough to be a VN. PW is way too busy to be a VN.) AND has pretty brisk writing. The ending sucked but it did the job up to then.

For Digital, the author's unique nerdiness gave her a damn neat idea for Digital which she expanded upon in Analogue for pacing the gameplay JUST different enough to keep the player engaged even when there is really only one puzzle to be had.

don't take it personally is a SLIGHTLY more traditional style VN, with the added social networking stuff providing a similar pace-change as the email hopping of Digital, but less constant. There are more actual choices in don't take it personally but they are pretty pointless. There's no failure or game over so I recommend you pick any "cool" choice.

Now, bigger VNs have choices which lead to different routes and the like but it's not an intuitive thing that challenges the player, more of just route mapping.

I have played 999, but considered it more of an adventure game with subgenre room escape. Definitely enjoyed it a lot.

I'm excited to be getting into this genre that is fairly new to me, thanks for the info.
Thanks for sharing your worthless and grammatically incorrect post! =)
PROTIP: you're = you are. your = possessive form
Also related: its VS it's
Bonus Question: bigger or larger?
PROTIP? People still use that? Like it wasn't douchy 10 years ago, thanks for bringing it back and further proving my point.

And it's called a typo, I know your limited brain probably can't comprehend the fact that someone can know the difference, but in a hurry, still type the wrong thing, what with you still using M$ like a 12 year old.

To be honest, I hate most VNs because they are horribly paced and not THAT well-written.

999 was more symptomatic of the genre. Your choices weren't really something that could be reasoned through with anything other than hindsight. Endings were practically different dimensions, etc etc. The puzzles were just breaks in the storytelling, pacing out the story, mostly the annoying stories your partners told (With next to no payoff, even. Still bugs me.).

Dunno if this was posted but CoD:MW3 $20. Steamworks. From Best Buy Digital Download. Don't know how long.

I'm a pretty freaking awesome gamer so the controller doesn't matter. You could give me a wooden stick with a USB cable attached and I'd figure out a way to use it to unlock all the achievements in Super Meat Boy.
Why is this thread so conducive to melodrama? Jesus.
It isn't, directly anyway, it's more of the people that are attracted to the thread. Trav is just mad all of the time, and he likes to flame as much as he wishes to. It's annoying, but you learn to ignore it, just like you would any other asshole. ;)

Also if that fails there is always the actual ignore button so the computer ignores for you. :D

That's funny, because it seems like I've unlocked more achievements in Revelations 2012 than you have, mister prophet. ;)

This Big Picture mode could not have come at a better time. Tomorrow I am going to meet up with the surgeon to find out when I get my gallbladder removed and I'll be stuck on bed duty for a little bit after that, this is perfect. Though my PS3 is crying because it thought it was going to get some quality time lol.
Ah, I remember the days when the MS Sidewinder was the gold standard for PC controls. I still have one somewhere.
Likewise. Every now and then I wonder why I ever stopped using it. Then I remember that it used the "game port" that used to be part of sound cards...

Really? You bothered to respond with this? Man, you would have been better off saying nothing and accepting it.

We expect better from our CAG disputes!
If this hasn't been posted yet, I highly recommend this: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/zo66b/by_request_psa_drastically_speed_up_steams_web/

Makes my Steam Store browser work a LOT faster. Very easy fix.
Marry me.

Also, "you're" vs. "your" is not a typo; at best, brainfart. But yeah, weak comeback—aside from the post in question actually being well-expressed.

Finally, why is my Steam all bubbly now? I expected hisses and clanks.

Do I need to download a client or anything from Best Buy or do they just give you a key to enter on Steam?

You're thinking of Gamefly regarding Direct2 Drive, not Gamestop regarding Impulse.

That article is not really that accurate. EA never made an offer, and that 1 billion dollar valuation was from a while ago, which is why it doesn't match up to the 3 billion that it is now. It's just shitty videogame journalism that's taking the original New York Times article out of context for a few extra web page hits. "Valve has been pursued over the years by Electronic Arts, which would very likely have valued Valve at well over $1 billion had the talks progressed that far." is the actual line from the article. It's just guesswork.

I need some more Steam friends who play Iron Brigade. Did anyone else pick it up? If so (and you want to actually play it), send me a PM with your Steam ID and let's be pals.
EA sought to buy Valve for $1 billion - Report:

Pretty scary if EA or someone else big bought out Valve/Steam. Didn't Gamestop screw over a lot of folks after they bought Impulse in terms of their access to their games in their account?

Glad Gabe told EA to pretty much screw themselves, but why would anyone sell if their company is valued at 3 billion and they offered you 1? The scary thing will be if someone else offered Gabe 5 billion or something more to take over the current top/dominant digital distribution platform.
its funny how many of these out-of-context, twisted articles stemming from that NY times one.
$3.75 with this voucher: GMG25-1BW0K-K1A3G

I don't think it'll be cheaper anytime soon. If you don't have it yet, now is the best time to buy it.
Can those that already have QC purchase it and redeem the DLC portion only? My concern is that you get one key and it includes both the game and DLC season pass and I already have the game in my library...

I bought the Season Pass a few weeks ago, and I can tell you they only give you one key that has the DLC and base game combined. You can't seperately redeem the DLC.

You might be able to activate the key and get the DLC added to your account, but of course the base game would go to waste when you do that.
