Free Stuff - Needs Updating

There are quite a few free and free2play games and mods on steam. You can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Upgrading is pretty simple in my mind. I either A) pay for the best current gen (I can afford) and ride the tech as long as I can, B) buy last gen top of the line for a discount at the cost of maybe needing to upgrade sooner or C) buy last-last gen at a major discount and possibly upgrade more often. My current build utilizes option C), my new build scheduled for BF 2014 will likely be option A) (or maybe B) according to release schedule and sales).

Edit: And concerning PSU's, I always get the largest reasonable option. If there's a chance I may need 1000W in my build, I'd just get it. It's, barring failure, a one time cost. It's not like you're wasting the extra power by it not being used. And the fact is larger PSU's are generally built more robust to handle that power, so if anything it should have better reliability than one sized "just right".
I have a 800W Corsair Gaming Series power supply on my PC.

Rest of my PC:

ASUS Socket 1366 Sabertooth x58 (w/ 2 SLI allowed); i7 950 @ 3.09 GHz w/ 4 cores, 8 threads; 1 GB of GF GTX 560 Ti; 8 GB of DDR3 RAM; Win 7 64-bit.

EDIT:

Do you have a 1000W on your power supply?

If yes - are you running multiple vid-cards?

I just buy new things when a computer starts to die on me, replacing the entire setup. Since I don't buy graphics-intensive games typically until after they've been out a year, I tend not to notice that I'm not at the top of the hardware curve. Lara Croft's hair be damned, for right now the best I need is for Skyrim to look pretty.

What you can lose by overspeccing your PSU is efficiency: they're not usually designed (and definitely not certified) for high efficiency at lower % loads.

Also, to require a 1kW PSU you'd need to be doing some serious overclocking and be running at least two GPUs (probably 3+ unless they're really inefficient.)

Not on this build. Currently I'm only running a Corsair 650TX on a single 5870 (I do have 3 Blu-ray drives and 3 internal HDD's). This build is getting a bit long in the tooth, but it's still serviceable for me. On my old work computer, I did run a 1000W OCZ PSU. I was running 3 cards, but it was still oversized for my needs.

Tempted to get the XCOM collection for $9.99 through Amazon.  Mainly interested in XCOM: EU.  Anyone think this will get much cheaper any time soon or should I just get it now?

Hardware question:

I was looking at a GTX 770 video card and it said "Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 42 Amps." From what I can tell my PSU supplies "Load Max 38A" on each +12v rail. Would I have to replace the PSU or would it still work? It almost meets the recommendation.
Watts = Amps x Volts

Watts is also known as volt-amps and is typically used in conjunction with AC power circuits which would be in your case 2(38*12) = 912 Watts which doesn't seem right. Are you sure about the amperage on your rails?

you should be fine if your numbers are correct. Antecs are usually quality psus

Thanks for posting this. Ran through it once yesterday and got a key today. Selection must be random since I know my time was terrible.

your worst nightmare has come true, I added you ;)

Okay, what the hell?

On my profile, all my Steam hours for my Steam games are there...

...but in Detail View Mode w/in the game client, the hour ain't there.

Anybody else got this going on...?
I had this happen a few months ago, deleted the clientblob and appdatablob files and it fixed itself, not sure now if you should do that with the possibility of being locked out of the market if steam mistakes your pc for a new device though.

What do you mean by "locked-out of Steam market"?

Locked out from Cardz-selling?

Trading?

Buying games from Steam?

I deleted all the Steam files/directories (except for Steam.exe, steamapps, and userdata) last night after I accidentally symlinked the wrong directory and broke my Steam install.

Despite having to enter one of those codes to appease Steam Guard, it didn't lock me out of the market.

I had the disappearing time played in details thing happen too, I think it was related to switching to the Steam beta client for the family/friend sharing stuff. It's fixed now, though.

Also got locked out of the Steam market because I disabled Steam Guard long enough for a buddy to use my account to ok his machine for sharing. Little did I know that you can't buy or sell anything on the Steam market unless you've had Steam Guard running for at least 15 days. Bummer.

just the market, fortunately Steam will still let you pump money into Gabe's coffers by purchasing on the store page. You just can't add or remove any items from the community market for 15 days. Until the 11th I can't trade or sell cardz :(

I'm sure that it says each +12v rail is 38A. I think my concerns have been sorted out through some earlier discussion, my PSU is apparently capable of 54A when combining both +12V rails, so there's probably no need to waste more time on it.

I use gamesavemanager to back up my saves, if my userdata got erased I would be covered.
Haven't tried that one before, might be worth checking out.

Myself, I use Acronis to do a full image of my computer periodically onto a massive external hard drive so in case anything happens I can simply clone my computer back to my last backup.

Watch out, some games keep their save files in userdata.
That's the main reason that I made sure to keep it (along with wanting my client settings to remain.) I know that Steam cloud-save games save into that directory, and I don't trust the cloud saves to sync correctly 100% of the time.

I think [...] I'm positive [...]

dat credibility

Did the same, have put in a couple games with BNW. On the whole I like what it adds with the trade routes and culture tweaks, each expansion has made the game feel progressively more complete. The only complaint I have, and this may be a product of me being bad at the game and rarely playing above difficulty level 3, but it seems it's a little too easy to win by culture. Last game I set out for a science victory using Korea and well before I got to that point, I had another culture victory in place. My only other quibble is I wish the cultural influence did more than sway policy/citizen satisfaction, or if it does I wish it was more clear about those benefits.

I wonder if Civ V's balance will ever be anything but fucked...

I stopped playing Binding of Isaac because my cloud save got screwed when I was switching between 2 PCs. It didn't update properly on the new one & synced a junk save to the cloud. When I logged on to the old one it overwrote my local save with the crap one from the cloud. I got pissed off, started yelling, cussing, probably spit a few times, and then uninstalled the game. I hadn't nerd raged like that it a while. It was probably due.

It butchered one of my games, too ('though I didn't care too much as I only lost ~30 minutes of progress). The main reason I don't trust it, thought, is because it turned itself off on a few of my games with many days of combined progress. Luckily I still had my old gaming rig in one (unformatted) piece.

That's my plan too. I'm far too cheapass to upgrade something that's just going to catch fire eventually anyway.

Maybe next time I'll get a machine that can actually play the games from 5 years ago cluttering up my Steam library..

Cool, grabbed it even though I've got all the other DLC. $5 for Gods and Kings seems pretty fair.

I can't quite bring myself to buy the Brave New World expansion though. $20 just seems like too much when I still haven't spent as much time with Civ 5 as I should have. Someday I suppose.

Shady-J the Pusher Panda has it for $10. No Mafia 2 though.

Great price if you want a taste of Firaxis' patented "only slightly less shitty this time but, hey, more Civs that a modder could approximate for free!" DLC model.

Anybody rent from GF?

I'm feelin' kinda bad about paying $1 for that Mafia 2 Steam key + Shattered Union (DD) bundle, and $1.30 for the FUEL Steam key + Chive Barker's Potato bundle makes me feel like total shit.

Who's that level-3 guy?

Injustice on PC? Yes please. Maybe we will get super lucky (I know highly unlikely) and it'll be moddable and people can create even more skins and characters for it.

I realize she's Marvel and not DC, but CapCom was/is lame and has still yet to put her in any MvC, so modders need to do me a favor and add her to Injustice to fight Batman with ;)

Squirrel girl? Hell yes, I'm glad someone knows who that sultry minx is. But if she ever makes her way into a fighting game, I demand that she have her buck teeth in.

CLAF3.0's girl is a real schlong softener.

If y'all like that, Blade's got vids of even hairier honeys all over his FB. Although I can't understand them because they speak Japanese too rapidly.

By squinting to read this post you have agreed to be cool and completely unbitchmade and you agree to acknowledge my love for olive-hued bitches if prompted in a military court of law.

I figure this would count as porn in this thread. Don't say I never did anything for ya:

She's Filipino, big whoop.[/customspoiler]

OMG, she has like 20 guitars, a fake faberge egg, and totally hipster furniture. That's what I was supposed to be looking at right?

Edit:

And I just looked at the specs of that laptop. 512GB max storage? They call that a gaming laptop? That's the upgrade version. If she got the base 128GB Diablo III, WOW, and her instagram pics probably already filled up that sucker.

Betrayer is one of the weeklong deals.  I've only played it about an hour but I was impressed by it.  The scenery is great and the game sets a dark/mysterious mood quite well.  Combat isn't bad either.  I see they've added a color slider too for those who prefer some color in the game.

I can't speak to how complete the game is (I'm pretty sure it's fairly incomplete) and it's an open world and vague concept so the end game isn't there (not sure if it will ever be?).
