Free Stuff - Needs Updating

There are quite a few free and free2play games and mods on steam. You can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Also agree. 1080p is totally fine. I don't even turn AA on and 1080p still looks awesome. To run anything higher than 1080p with max settings/AA just requires too much money and power. I like pretty graphics, but not that much.

Don't forget to run the more efficient SMAA, FXAA and even MLAA instead of the old-school shit (MSAA aka standard AA).

Good frame-boost just for you, bitches!

I have had save problems in Dirt 2, Bulletstorm, and I think Red Faction
I'm one of those people who had few issues with G4WL... Honestly, for a long time there I had far more issues with steam (though steam seems to finally be happy now) but I've lost saves in Dawn of War before...

Speaking of which, I've yet to try it.. but has G4WL been removed from Dawn of War yet? (I've not done anything with Retribution though I do know it didn't use G4WL at all.)

Anyhow, glad to see G4WL being removed from a fair number of games...

Regarding Garry's Incident, seems there's a real life one - http://indiestatik.com/2013/10/20/day-one-garrys-incident/ To summarize - Total Biscuit gets game for review, trashes it, developers get review pulled citing Total Biscuit making advertising revenue off of it. People are accusing the publisher of also posting fake Metacritic reviews to bump the score up. The internet has responded in kind as it currently has a user score of 0.7 Review is up on daliymotion - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x15fmac_wtf-is-day-one-garry-s-incident_videogames
Wow, what a stupid and short sighted thing to do... They might as well fold their studio now and hope they can get jobs elsewhere... but I know if I would think twice about hiring any of them.... and I suspect its very few that are actually involved in this BS.

This is a black mark that's going to stain people...

So my nephew (man, that makes me feel old...) runs a small gaming startup in China and ordered an Occulus Rift. He had it delivered to my house (in the US) so that I could ship it to him. I took the opportunity yesterday to unpack it and check out what all the fuss is about. I got it set up in Linux and ran the test demo with the headset on. Not even 60 seconds later, I have to rip it off 'cause I can feel my dinner about to climb its way back up my throat and I'm starting to feel dizzy.

I may be in the minority, but I'm good with 1080p for the foreseeable future. Better stuff to spend my money on than running some games on an expensive 4k monitor requiring 3 expensive gpus and wasting a bucket load of electricity. Games already look good enough for me and 4k seems excessive (much like 1440p phones)

This may change when they make 4k stuff dirt cheap and more energy efficient... penguins will likely get on that bandwagon in 10 years time.
I'm in the same boat... and I'm still not convinced that some of these system requirements will really be whats needed to run and enjoy the game... (There is a difference IMHO)

Also, and while its been a few years, these developers are going to run into huge issues in getting these massive texture files to people... Not so much in the US, I think most of us have no real cap on their internet though I know that's not true for all, but take Europe for example... Many of those countries have tightly controlled internet. (Spain is the one that sticks out in my mind the most) where its not even possible to buy unlimited internet... Some would say you cannot even buy a reasonable amount... I'm pretty sure it was 20 GB.)

My experience isn't first hand but do to large number of complaints that Naughty Dog got for their Uncharted 3 MP Beta... It had this new feature called Uncharted TV (Which was meant to show the best plays of the week (or whatever) in the in between matches while in the lobby. At the time it showed a trailer for the game... and the big issue was the game never downloaded the file, it would just stream it in between matches... The result was that it killed a large number of peoples bandwidth for a month before anyone even realized what was going on.

Nvidia might want to sell you a new video card but the world's infrastructure isn't ready for 4K in a nonphysical media format. (and I don't think the game publishers really want to go back to printing discs.)

How Steam can display a release date of Oct 18, 2013 for this game and not get sued for false advertising is beyond me. Original release date, 1993. I wonder if I can put a 10 year old car up for sale in a lot, and put "release date 2012" on it and not get sued.

I disagree and I am going to say that the date that steam list here is correct since this version of 7th guest has not been available before. If you look closer to the store pages you will see why they use this date for 7th guest and the original release date for the 11th hour.

So what upgrades did they do for steam to the original that they didn't do for the sequel?

Personally, I think it was/is just a typo... but one that needs be corrected.

That Deadric Bundle is just normal retail bundle and over 7 months old.

Deus Ex Human Revolution: Director's Cut (10/22), Path of Exile (10/23), and Deadly Premonition (10/29) are all card providers.
Released in Europe days later when card prices are at bottom. Guess I will wait -75% after all even with that low price. :D

Obviously they suited the textures to support 4k resolution displays.
I still play/enjoy a bunch of old games so I don't use the term loosely... but I don't imagine I could think of a game that would have aged worse than theses two... I know I've played 7th guest and even back in the day, while it was impressive to see FMV in a game, it wasn't really striking in its quality... It was small and had quite a bit of noise.

I'm sure there are gifs on the internet now with better film quality...

I can hardly tell the difference between 720p and 1080p most of the time, so 4k isn't even in the back of my mind right now...
The thing is this: you want bigger res's and better textures for when you're aiming at bigger HDTV's/monitors. This is especially true when you're up-close, like when we sit on the monitor w/ a KB/mouse playing PC games, b/c things will look blurrier and bit more pixelated on the same ole res's when using a big new HDTV/monitor - it totally changes your FOV (Field of View), depending on where you're sitting and what your display's size is.

And I'm also betting - especially since Steam's also aiming for the couch and living room w/ Big Picture Mode, controller support, and SteamMachines and trying to get normal PC's to also go there - those guys playing games in living rooms are definitely NOT using 23'' HDTV's. They are likely using MUCH bigger HDTV's - think over 30'', at least!

On my PC, I do have a 23'' monitor w/ 1080p and use 1920x1080 - and yep, I think it looks fine.

If I ever went bigger on my monitor, I'd certainly be looking for bigger res's & better textures on my PC.

Right now, like anything relatively brand new - I think 4K's too expensive and too new for me. It'll have to get cheaper and more common-place first, which would obviously drive pricing down - b/c then it'd be in demand and everybody would want it.

Examples:

Yeah, 800x600 res' on my 1080p monitor for Diablo 2 looks like "meh" in full-screen - pixelated and all, especially when sitting up close like most us PC gamers do when using KB/mouse. But man, in the old days when I was rocking an old-school much-smaller monitor and a older system that it was really built around - looked just fine to me.

Now, let's get into games built, more of less, for older consoles first (i.e. XBox360 and PS3), but wound-up w/ PC ports later and/or games where console-versions were the lead platform and the PC was an after-thought/basic port.

Currently playing Resident Evil 6 PC on my 23'' 1080p monitor and my modern PC. Character models look great, though - but it's the texture-quality of stuff in the game-world that's all over the place. Thank God, most of these textures like signs and stuff ain't too important to the story or anything - unlike other games like Bioshock series, where they're a VERY important part of the game-world and story. Some of these RE6 PC textures look like they are, more or less, for console gamers - as up close, some of these textures are NOT clear; whereas a console gamer who'd likely be sitting further way w/ a controller, probably wouldn't even look for or even notice details on the signs and stuff b/c of their different FOV (i.e. much further away). And here, I have everything on my GPU software settings up and in-game setting maxed-out at 1920x1080. This game is 17GB or so in size on the PC, BTW - and the texture quality (lack thereof) certainly shows.

RAGE PC has the same thing going on RE6 PC has - yep, character models look great. RAGE PC also has the same texture problem as RE6 PC - but RAGE has it numerous times worse, as the textures were compressed down like Holy Hell from over 1TB source files to actually bloody fit 3 DVD's/1 BR disc so they could get it out to gamers and not cause crazier download times for those buying DL-versions of the game (like from Steam) - it's around 24GB in size on the PC currently, BTW. No wonder artists and dev's want to go bigger w/ the res's and not compress textures as much - they are probably tired of compressing things down way too bloody far, in their honest opinions; and the results often do show-up, in some shape or form - especially for those like myself who are graphics-nuts, who can and do indeed notice everything.

I am more or less playing devil's advocate with Travathian to save him from wasting time and money on a lawsuit. :)

If we go by this standard this game's release date is incorrect also:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/12210/

Should we be also directing our hate and anger towards steam and rockstar for that game also?

Got it. :)

As for anger and whatnot... I think that might be bit overstated but I do think there should be more consistency in the release date. Unless its a new version of an old game it should have the original release date. (Lets pretend that the original Ducktales game was released on the PC all those years ago... If it was listed on Steam than it should have its old original release date while the new Ducktales game should have its current release date... All in all, it IS a new game.)

Honestly, this is one of my few complaints about Steam... Its a bit too much buyer beware. I'm not expecting, nor wanting refunds, but it seems a bit too easy to get trash listed.

(My other complaint is that the interface could use a complete redesign... They've added quite a few new features (achievements, cards, badges, etc) but much of it is buried.)

DMC is $10 at GMG. http://t.co/EWPP2cH7nl

After code GMG20-IWGQX-41IS1

Seems like a good price but I've never been a fan of Ninja Theory games... And I'm really debating on Arkham Origin right now... My PC is below the recommendations in some areas (but above the requirements in all) and the other two Arkham games I picked up this week look absolutely amazing... Also I'm sure the preorder DLC will be on sale at some point so even at 37 dollars or so I'm debating the price point also.

Sale has ended.

I'd have picked it up if the base price wasn't still $50 (and had been reduced to $40 or less.) Something about paying $10 - coupon or not - for a single game doesn't feel right any more.
Probably b/c we're often spoiled by Indie Gala, Humble Bundles, Groupees, Amazon DVG Crazy Sales + Bundles, etc etc. ;)

In this case: this is a Capcom game and they often ain't 75% off or better.

Throw a 20% off coupon on top, it looks even better at $10.

We're talking about Capcom here, not say others notoriously known for MSRP slashing and sales-crazy prices like Square-Enix.

Granted, I didn't jump on it b/c of numerous reasons:

I have a big backlog;

not super-interested in DMC series;

I really should play DMC4 some more;

and especially b/c I don't know if I will dive into DMC 2013 soon.

This is all true, but DmC is also part of the ATI bundle. Personally, I don't really want to pay more than five bucks for it. And even at that I'd prefer to use my Steambucks.

Good to know. Will keep this also in mind.

But, yeah - I bought DMC4 a while ago: I liked it, but didn't finish it. I really think I should play that more and see if I want to go further later on w/ DMC series.

I do want to play DMC 2013, but it ain't on my "must play ASAP" list - even at such surprisingly cheaper prices from Capcom and vendors like GameFly and GMG recently. I can wait, just like you.

Plus, I'm currently in the midst of RE6-mania here.

Whatta you mean $37 for Batman, you can pick up a steam code for $20-25 easily in either the trade thread or eBay. I got mine for $20.

Blech, you're probably right. I've wanted Monaco for awhile, tried the demo on xbox live awhile ago and loved it. I'm debating whether or not to wait on it...blerggggh
HiB 10 should arrive in about six weeks. If it doesn't show up in that bundle, the Steam Holiday sale will follow soon after with a sale price that will match (or surpass) the current price. So unless you are absolutely dying to play it now, I'd wait.

EDIT: Actually, it's probably closer to seven weeks until HiB 10.

Gooood point. It's a game that's relatively high on my list, but I just started Xcom literally 10 minutes ago, and next week I'll be taking a break on it to play horror games in honor of Halloween (FINALLY gonna play Amnesia). So I can definitely sit on it until another sale comes up.

Stealth Bastard DLC is undiscounted? fuck is this???

Jake Nome: Zeno Clash 2 two-pack is $10 after coupon. You doin' better than that?

Oh that is a good idea and a way to make myself play some of my backlog. Theme week starting this Friday night!
