New Thread:

This thread has been replaced by TSDT v11

Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:
All days.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

AppData, that was the one I was forgetting. Thanks.

Yeah, I shouldn't have to worry too much there as I'm keeping my steamapps/common folder backed up. Thanks.
Uplay launcher.

You'll probably miss something if you don't use Gamesave manager, games store their shit allll overrrrr.

Steamapps common is not good enough, some games store saves in Userdata as well.

That's what Gamesave Manager is. It finds your saves for you and then you tell it to back them up whenever you want. I try to do it often. I would be screwed otherwise, there are saves in about 100 different places.

You could try powerline adapters if the wifi isn't enough. I think they come in 200-400 Mbps flavors and will probably do better than wireless, especially in an apartment with so many interfering routers around.
Wouldn't I still need a wifi adapter for the tv, though? Are there tvs with ethernet now?

There are definitely TVs out there with ethernet, but I don't know how prevalent of a feature it is.
I would steer away from any proprietary TV technologies and hookups - you pay a premium for them and they tend to become obsolete pretty quickly (at least, much sooner than the TV screen itself). Not that ethernet itself would be proprietary but the firmware in the TV that would do something with that feed.

More to the point: yes, your best bet is to have a small HTPC of some sort behind the TV. It can be as tiny as a Raspberry Pi which would be just a front end player for a remote media server, or a full blown HTPC that has its own storage. The former needs relatively good (but not great) networking:

- Wired, which is preferable but in many cases impossible for many reasons (distance, cabling, construction, etc.)

- Wifi, which can be flaky depending on the distance of your TV from the media server (but you may be able to use repeaters/amplifiers to boost the signal).

- Powerline, which sounds great in theory but can be very hit-and-miss (and even insecure) depending on many things that can be difficult to change in your home.

I've tried all of these options and have settled for a relatively small & quiet standalone HTPC running XBMC sitting behind the TV. However, my Roku is wifi and I can stream Netflix "HD" with less than 2Mb/s bandwidth (I tried powerline and I get similar performance).

Just a quickie...
taking quotes out of context is fun

Hey, I just got into the In-Home Streaming beta. I've been wanting to try this forever, hope it works well.
I did too, but me wanting it was predicated on me also winning a steam box which I failed.

That may be interesting to some of you.
Son of a bitch...I just broke down and spent $20 on this stupid game literally two days ago. I want to cry right now. I'm a terrible CAG.

Thanks for the info, but I don't understand how having a dedicated HTPC solves the dilemma of my gaming pc being in the other room...???

Yeah, I've got my Uplay/Origin/Misc stuff backed up elsewhere as well. Thanks. Not a big fan of managers, though. I prefer semi-automated manual backing-up.
I was going to mention Uplay saves in a daft location but you already found it.

Honestly, I tend to google per-game. Devs are often consistent where they dump their save files.

I move all my save folders over to dropbox and symbolic link them back to their expected location.

I believe streaming from your gaming PC to the HTPC is possible. Especially with that new Steam family streaming thing.

I'm not actually purposely backing up my saves/settings, but it's kind of part of what I'm doing. I'm just going through and backing up locations of bulk data as opposed to specific pieces. It's a dredge and sort later method. I have enough storage space that I can afford to be a bit lazy.

There's plenty of other busy work to keep you busy if that's what you need.

Unless you passed the game or played it recently, old saves are worthless anyway. Chances are you won't remember the story, where you left off, what you were doing, etc.

Right, that's what we were talking about before. But that technology has yet to prove itself. Okay, well, I feel like we're going in circles now. When I get the tv I'll figure out what works best and let you guys know. Thanks for pointing out all the different options.

I don't get why you guys make it harder than it has to be, tracking down every game's save location. This is 2014, there's an app for that. But to each his/her own.

I'll say it again, I'm not purposely backing up game saves. I'm backing up locations. If there are game saves or settings in those locations, even better. I don't want to micromanage an app just for game saves as I prefer to macromanage a general backup that also supports incremental backups. Anyway, both of your opinions are wrong because they are different than mine, so I win.

yeah but what happens when the app goes all Skynet and zaps your ass when you try and access your Mata Hari save? Christian Bale, that's what.

There are good reasons. Like dropbox-linking everything (which allows me to roll back any file to any state in the last 30 days) -- good for recovering from save-corruption or redoing from an earlier point.

Ugh. I hate that. I'm 10 hours into ME1 and FO3... but it's been... a while... it's the reason I try not to switch games until I beat/abandon.

Speaking of Steam Streaming, I just got an invite to the beta. Anyone else get one this round?

I'll have to check it out since I do have a sort of HTPC in the living room that I hadn't really been using much.

I'm not sure if someone has mentioned this, but I've used something similar to these HDMI single Cat5e/Cat6 cable extenders in the past. Mainly for mirroring TVs with an HDMI splitter and a Satalitte box over 120 feet. This works well for pre-wired houses/apartments, but can also be achieved with running your own Cat5e / Cat6 cable.

An even cheaper way is to use a HDMI double Cat5e/Cat6 cable extender which seems to work for people in the reviews, but I have no experience with using the double cable extenders. Although, I'd imagine they would be similar but you also have to deal with two cables instead of one and the max extender length is less (but not by much).

Just another option for whenever you get to that decision stage.

I'm not sorry to have missed contributing to the diet pop and exercise discussion. I will say this, though.

It's "lose" weight. If you're "loosing" weight, that suggests you are letting it go free to terrorize the populace.
This supports my theory that fat is neither created nor destroyed. It just moves around the populace. My fat came directly from my younger sister while we were sitting side by side on the front steps of our childhood home. She was just 2 at the time of transfer so I'm sure the loosing act wasn't intentional.

Just a word of caution. Steer clear of young children looking to loose their baby fat. You will become a victim.

>.> I didn't even know about that beta... doesn't matter I don't have anywhere to stream it to except to my laptop, as far as 15 feet away... Nah, I'd rather play on my desktop with a proper monitor.

You're not quite done.... BS:I DLC Strikes Back. ;)

Right now I'm more curious if it works and how well it works vs actually playing games via streaming long term. I can see the convenience of it, I just am cautious about investing too much thought and effort into it if the technology still has growing pains.

*ETA: Of course I don't play much of anything long term these days anyway, streaming or otherwise.
