New Thread:

This thread has been replaced by TSDT v11

Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:
All days.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

I have a Roku, too. In addition to what SadPanda99 mentioned, you get lots of programming that you wouldn't normally be able to find. There are various lecture channels, cooking and crafting channels, a NASA channel, a K-Drama channel, and I think there's a CERN channel, too. Appilcations are light on RAM and quick to download, with quite a few good, free, obscure stations. Not a fan of the subscription stations (Funimation and others) but I use it as a replacement for cable/satellite and am happy.

BTW, there are prob pr0n channels not featured in the app store. Companies can issue download codes for private channels on Roku.

I foresee this continuing for quite some time...

Has your "innocent squirrel" act been a rouse this whole time?

You're averaging 15 and a half views a post... Either you have a stalker (or 5) or google hung up on your profile one night.

Edit: I'll try not to double post but with the one avatar its going to be real easy for me to do...
No, It's because she was sorely missed and that's from everyone checking her profile status every time she was mentioned.....and I'm probably responsible for 10k of those.

Some people just call it Cola too.
My God, please don't restart the cola/pop thing!

P.S. Love the avatar NS. I made one for Larce80 last year, and he never changed it back from the Christmas version.

With enough patience, at the end of the first disc, you could Junction 100 Deaths to your Attack Status Effect and basically OHK everything.
Fixed.

FF8 was probably my favorite Final Fantasy. The exploitative nature and jank of the junction system when combined with collecting cards and the card mod ability made that game really beautifully broken. I loved it.

Can we all discuss the basics of "real gamer" vs "casual sheep"? That's always a good one.
Sheep gamers only play the Dreamcast.

They have this weird obsession with Seaman.

And grazing.

Since I will probably be out of town most of the winter holidays, and since the thread will grow 50 pages every day during the actual Steam Winter sale, I'd like to dump some random Steam codes here.

Very cool way to drop codes, thanks! I was going to grab Ether Vapor Remaster, but it seems to have been lurked - a bit surprising given your clever encoding.

Already had all of the games except Ether Vapor Remaster . . . which was lurked lol

Very cool post though! I had fun just putting names to the hints.

I've never played a Final Fantasy game...although I did buy FF7 when it was 3 bucks a bit back

Am I a horrible human being?

I'm in the same boat handbasket, and it sure is getting warm.
Ok I have not wanted to admit this for awhile because I thought I was alone but me too. Now the series is so far into it I feel as if I would be missing something if I jumped in. D@mn OCD.

I just realized after all this time that it is Waking Mars... I always read it as Walking Mars.

I had to double check it wasn't Walking Mars. I always read it the same. Blanka be trolling me again.

Wikipedia previous game plots and jump in at 7
Or really just pick from 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 based on which looks most aesthetically pleasing to you and which is most easily available to you on a console/PC you enjoy playing on.

There's no real starting point or obvious progression of mechanics, so just pick one and go.

Or don't and play something else.

I'm pretty ambivalent about Final Fantasy at this point in my life.

Really cool code drop iMac! I feel closer to you all now :grouphug:

Also, I've never played a Final Fantasy game either. It's on my list of shame, which is growing by the day.

I have tried several iterations of Final Fantasy, never finished a single playthrough.  I feel like I should like them, the art style and story interest me, but I just can't get into JRPGs.

I wrote this post about my favorite FF games in the PSN thread... only to be ridiculed quite quickly for writing such a long post :(  Oh well, that's why I post mostly in here. :)

My favorites in the main numbered FF games (in descending order of preference):
FF6 - I'm not sure if nostalgia plays into this decision, but I was amazed at the depth of the character development and story in this game. For people who did not grow up on NES and SNES JRPG's, it may take them longer to get used to the "retro aesthetic," but the visuals of FF6 were incredible for its time, and the music is STILL top notch. It's hard to create beautiful sprite work (see Dragon Fantasy book 2 as an awful counter-example), so FF6's visuals and music still hold their own today. The esper mechanic is interesting, though it also makes the classes much less distinct by the end of the game as everyone can learn the same spells. The defining point for FF6 is its rich story and the interplay and camaraderie between the cast's many players. I will never forget Kefka's digitized laugh or the story moments of Cyan, Locke, Celes, and many others. I want to cite specific examples but I think players should experience them for themselves :)

FF12 - I know, I know, I'm probably in the minority here, and I totally get that. However, as an ardent player of the MMO FFXI (which I won't count in this list), I thought FF12's gameplay mechanics simulated an offline FFXI quite well, though I still missed skillchains. The world was expansive and beautiful (sometimes to a fault due to the long distances of travel), but I appreciated it at the time as it made the world feel huge and alive. Now as I've gotten older, I prefer fast travel systems as opposed to long periods of travel (15 minute waits for airships in FFXI, I'm looking at you). The story was forgettable but overall inoffensive, and I actually liked most of the characters. I also think FF12 had the best English dub in the series. The world was full of secrets, and my favorite part of the game was sneaking through high level areas among enemies who would one-shot me to get the Zodiac Spear early. However, just like FFXI, FF12 had too many obfuscated secrets and mechanics that would have been impossible to uncover without a walkthrough or strategy guide. I found this mystique charming back then but I'd probably hate it today.

FF7 - Everyone knows about this game by now. I'm pretty tired of the constant shilling (the Advent Children movie and Dirge of Cerberus were awful, though I quite liked Crisis Core. In fact, Crisis Core is one of my favorite games on the PSP, and the ending still gives me chills to think about even today!), but I cannot deny that I absolutely loved this game when it came out. Sure, the story is a bit too convoluted for its own good and sometimes it felt like they threw in weird plot twists for seemingly no reason other than to shock you, but the materia system is still my favorite gameplay mechanic of a main FF game. Music is still great, visuals are quite dated now but passable, but lord... I wish I could skip those summon cutscenes.

FF4 - Having completed the DS remake a few years back, I definitely realized I had rose tinted goggles when I thought FF4's plot was revolutionary. Looking back, it's silly how I thought all the "sacrifices" in the game were so brave and heroic, and the characters are rather one dimensional with the slight exception of Cecil and a couple others. Still, the plot was deep for its time and the visuals and music are still gorgeous. FF4 also introduced the ATB which was a great step up in my opinion over most turn based systems (with the exception of, in order of preference, Shadow Hearts 2, Grandia 2, FF10).

FF1 - Classic. I probably spent the most hours on this game overall than any other non-MMO game in my life. I've beaten the game probably over 8 times (3-4 times on the NES, 1-2 times on GBA, another on PSP, and once again on iOS), including 4 WHM and 4 MNK challenges. Story is stupid, characters are practically non-existent, but I still love the class system. Seiken Densetsu 3 does the class system better (I think the job selection of FF3, FF5 and FFT are good but have little weight when you can switch on the fly).

FFX - I never beat FFX due to real life tearing me away from video games around this time, but what I did play I loved. This would probably be higher on the list if I had ever finished it. I'm looking forward to the HD remakes on the Vita!!!

FF5 - Boring story, boring characters, and somehow I felt the visuals took a step back from FF4. However, the job system was interesting, even if a bit broken, and it was one of the first games that made me eager to develop new strategies for non-boss battles. Overall rather forgettable for me though, with few memorable moments or songs.

FF2 - The first true story I witnessed in any game. It's pretty silly by today's standards, but the innovation of the leveling mechanics and keyword/password conversation system was quite interesting. Unfortunately, it doesn't really stand the test of time, as it's rather counterintuitive to become stronger by constantly hitting myself in battle.

FF3 - Eh... I could never get into this game. The job system is decent but the overall pacing is just too slow.

FF8 - Someone is going to mail me a letter laced with Anthrax for this placement. I couldn't get past the first 4 or 5 hours because I hated the main character and the junction gameplay mechanic. I read up on the plot later and was glad I never gave it a second glance. /ducks

FF9 - Never played this so I can't give any judgment.

As for non-mainline FF games, Crisis Core is probably my favorite, followed closely by FF Tactics and Mystic Quest.  I don't know why... Mystic Quest, as dumb as it was, holds a special place in my heart.

Ok I have not wanted to admit this for awhile because I thought I was alone but me too. Now the series is so far into it I feel as if I would be missing something if I jumped in. D@mn OCD.
Many FF games are NOT related to each other, character-wise, story-wise & plot-wise. They might have similar themes & combat systems here and there - but they ain't entirely related.

There's are exceptions, of course.

Some games do have direct-sequels.

FFX does.

FFX and FFX-2, as these are actually sequels to each other.

Actually, FFX series was the first REAL FF game to have a direct sequel.

FFXIII is another.

And well, we all know FF13 was so huge and so much content keeps winding up on the cutting-floor, that it's gonna be 3 games long: FFXIII; FFXIII-2; and the upcoming Lightning Returns: FFXIII (AKA FFXIII-3).

Weird.  20 minutes later I was still able to grab Serious Sam HD 2.  The lurkerbots are slow tonight.
Thanks for the big drop!

I found it boring and clunky. A game shouldn't control poorly in order to make it more difficult.

Let me kill this skeleton standing completely still with his back to me. Ok, all lined up, here we gowhatthefuck? How the hell did I miss?
That's funny, I stopped playing right at that part where I snuck up behind a skeleton and tried to sneak attack him like the note on the floor suggested, somehow he decided to kill me in two hits instead and sent me way way back and respawned every enemy between here and there. I tried a couple more times and then had enough. :(

So, you were still in the Undead Asylum (starting area)? I nearly gave up on Dark Souls while in the starting area, but decided to plod on. Once you get to Undead Burg and get some better gear it gets immensely better.

Edit: Also, the game forces you to learn enemies and their attack habits and patterns. This is not a hack and slash game by any means. The combat definitely requires a certain amount of skill as blocking, parrying, dodging and attack timing are all important to implement.

This is so cool. I redeemed Showdown Effect.

No, I was in the Burg. I got mad at the game and decided to quit forcing myself to try to like it. What got me was having to start over at a far away checkpoint with every enemy respawned and still feeling way underpowered and outmatched. I could only retry it so many times before feeling that it was a lost cause, and just not fun. I thought I was prepared to deal with that aspect of the game but I guess I wasn't.

Very clever, I'm seriously impressed at the creativity (and generosity)

I'll have to echo neuro here...once you get a grip on how to learn enemy patterns, and if you go slowly through levels, it gets much easier. Have your shield up at all times unless attacking.

For anybody who has played all the way thru dark souls...my first time playing I was stupid and never bothered taking the time to learn about upgrading weapons

I played the entire game w/the drake sword until near the end when I picked up a black knight sword

That made the game infinitely harder. Not to mention this was before I went to rehab so I was constantly shit faced out of my mind the entire time playing it

If I can beat Dark Souls under those circumstances pretty much anybody can beat that game

I'm playing demon's souls for the first time right now...that game gets so frustrating. I sorely miss the bon fire system of dark souls

I kept up my shield, I went slow. I feel I was behaving very cautiously. I won't pretend I knew jack shit about the combat though. I did my best. Maybe if I watch a walkthrough it'll open my eyes to what I did wrong.

Can someone tell me what you actually lose when you die, that green blob thing that you can pick back up? How bad is it if I don't wanna go back there to pick it up? I think the game just called it power or something. I tried to look up some tips and directions but it's too much. I should just stick to western RPGs.

I'm the worst.

Most people here would say neither PC woooooo

but if forced to pick probably say ps4 on the basis that the ps3 had superior exclusives

I doubt that particular topic would get a big response in this thread

however, if forced to pick, I for one would choose the sega dreamcast
I know I am in the minority group but Dreamcast was my favorite console because it had so many games ported from the arcade and great games like Shenmue and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, however the console didn't sell well against the mighty PS2 so Sega stopped making consoles and concentrate all their resources on developing/publishing games for other platforms instead.

duddde that's awesome

sold

like i need to buy MORE stuff...
If you can afford to wait, Google is coming out with a Nexus TV set-top box next year. You can then decide between that, Roku or the rumoured Apple TV with A7 processor.

Sheep gamers only play the Dreamcast.

They have this weird obsession with Seaman.

And grazing.
Everyone should love a human fish tamagochi, no?

When you die, you lose your souls and any humanity in your counter (you don't lose humanity items)

How bad it is all depends on how much you had. Souls are used to level up and as currency - to buy items, upgrade weapons, etc

Humanity, when in your counter, can be used to turn your character back to human form at bon fires, and to kindle fires, which increases the amount of estus flasks you can carry

They also give you stat bonuses - the higher your humanity, the higher your defense and the higher the likelihood of enemies dropping items is. Depending on the weapon you're using, it also increases the damage you do

Dark souls really is a pretty in depth game...to feel truly comfortable you really may need guides.

Edit: Another tip is you really need to think about how you level your character...different weapons have different scales. For a beginner, a good weapon to use is just buy a scimitar from the vendor in undead berg. Then get the drake sword (watch a video on how to do that). Focus on leveling up your dexterity, and level up your strength just enough to use the drake sword. In the mean time, start upgrading the scimitar - it has a decent scaling w/dexterity and a quick moveset, which is good for beginners because it gives you more time to rebound from a mistake than the laborious swings of a hammer or a great sword. About midway through the game, you can use a certain boss soul to turn the scimitar into a sword which makes the rest of the game a (relative) cakewalk

It is a game that has a high learning curve, even for an ARPG. What you lose when you die is any souls you've collected (basically your currency/XP) and humanity (a little more complicated to explain). If you die and can make it all the way back to the point at which you died on your next 'life' and collect that green blob, you'll regain everything you lost previously. I would recommend watching some let's play footage to get a visual grasp on what is successful and what is not. Reading a wiki or two wouldn't hurt either.

Edit: Also, it helps to not think of death as a loss, since you can't really die. It's more of a failed turn, that intends to teach you over and over and over the right and wrong ways to get things done. I got so pissed when I lost 50,000 souls early on, but when I realized that was just like money in Borderlands and could pretty easily grind it back up, it started hurting a bit less. What you'll REALLY hate is being cursed. I was cursed four times in a row in Blighttown. That sucked.
