The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

I saw Sanitarium is on sale at GoG.com for $7. I want it, and normally I might grab it at that price, but then I think about all the stuff I just bought here and how much cheaper it was, and I think.... I'll pass for now.
[/QUOTE]

Would you believe that I have Sanitarium on disc, sealed, waiting to be played? I have been meaning to play it for years and have just never gotten around to it.

I've been meaning to respond to an earlier post of yours - I thought I might have been the only one who learned typing by playing those old Sierra games! It's a wonder that I use prepositions when I type, since those games taught me to phrase things like 'Look tree' and 'rub berries'.

Completely off-steam-topic but since you mentioned it before, if you're having a hard time tracking your finances, check out Mint.com. It'll help keep track of all of your purchases, as well as allowing you to tag purchases (e.g., all Steam purchases) so you can see how much you're spending on one particular type of item.

People should play more Day of Defeat: Source. I played a bit last night because I was bored and 4 hours flew by without me realizing it. If you don't have it, at least try it out for $2.50.

i bought bionic commando, a bit on the fence about borderlands... kinda feels like i need some friends to play with... and appears noone wants too :p

is saints row worth getting?

Borderlands is definitely much better with three other friends.

Saints Row 2, while being a blatant GTA clone, is still pretty good and actually quite fun. Same goes for the first one.

So I got Borderlands downloading, but the DLC I bought is no where on my list of games. How do I install it? :S

Also, how come when I click on "download demo" for stuff, it doesn't work? I wanna try the demo of that kid who looks like Conan O'Brian with the crayon.

Ha, yep, that's me. :) As for Sanitarium, I never did buy that one! I wanted to play that and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, but I think I as too young. I bet I'd love them now. (I get the two of them confused, though.)

I'll check out Mint.com! That could be perfect! Thanks!

[quote name='ChernobylCow']What Steam sale purchases are you guys most happy with?[/QUOTE]

Only just got Shatter installed this morning, and on my laptop too, so I haven't had a chance to give it a good go. I'm looking forward to playing Thief though. Hoping Winterbottom is good - everyone seems to like it, but I often don't like the "mutiple copies" type games. I get too frustrated trying to sync them up correctly.

I haven't bought anything else yet - keep hoping for Freedom Force and Ben There Dan That Pack to go on daily deal - otherwise I'll probably look at picking them up at the end of the sale. Although knowing Freedom Force was on sale for $2 for the pack earlier this year makes me wonder if I shouldn't wait...

And still wishing The Witcher would drop to the $6 it was, or less.

The only game I've bought in the sale is Shatter, which I'm very happy with. I know Rocket Knight is down to $7.50, but I'm hoping it hits $4.99 in one of the daily deals. Other than that, I don't really feel the need to purchase much else.

It should install automatically. When you fire the game up, it should say "You've added Zombie Islands" or whatever and tell you what area to access it from.

[quote name='SEH']Borderlands is a good buy at $10 if anyone here is on the fence. Be warned though, the end of the game is awful.

Aside from that, no good deals for me today.[/QUOTE]

For $10, its an excellent game, but then again, I played it with 3 friends until completion....still pretty solid at $10 for solo play too though, imo.

but regarding the end of the game--whats wrong with it? I enjoyed it...then again, I was the hunter in our group, and found it a little too easy :)

The boss didnt even fight back. You all just stood there and shot it a billion times until it died. It was insanely easy. Also, for a game so hugely based around loot to NOT give out some sort of loot after killing the final boss was the dumbest shit I've ever seen.

I loved the game, but the end was just so lame. Total "that's it?" moment.

[quote name='chernobylcow']shatter crashes because i have a saitek keyboard, oddly enough. Found it out in the forums. So to play it i'll have to disconnect my keyboard....[/quote]

wtf?

heh, of all the things...

saitek keyboards--is there some kind of running app for programmable hotkeys or something? seems really bizzare a standard usb or ps/2 made by saitek would cause problems.

My mom's hairdrier kept Daggerfall from booting, but I ran Quake on my toaster.

Ah, okay, got it. Thanks dude. So it just kind of builds itself in, I guess. Fair enough!

[quote name='fart_bubble']hope more people start posting highscores in Shatter, my 250 million shouldn't be in the top 500[/QUOTE]

I'm in the top 6000 of some of the leaderboard categories. Good enough for me!

If I have a hard copy of Borderlands, do you think I'd be able to install the DLCs if I buy them thru Steam? I'm guessing no...

[quote name='dfg']If I have a hard copy of Borderlands, do you think I'd be able to install the DLCs if I buy them thru Steam? I'm guessing no...[/QUOTE]

Damn good question. Who knows!

I hope these sales are teaching you guys not to buy hard copies any more. Financially, it's wayyyy better to just wait for a Steam sale.

[quote name='dfg']If I have a hard copy of Borderlands, do you think I'd be able to install the DLCs if I buy them thru Steam? I'm guessing no...[/QUOTE]

no you cannot dfg--you have to buy them from the 2kgames borderlands expansion website, unless they released a pc version of that double expansion bundled into one disc....either case, you can't get DLC's from steam, for a *non-steam* borderlands copy.

[quote name='sherisdoppel']How's Telltale Complete Pack?
Is it worth the price?[/QUOTE]

It is if you like their style of game. For me, YES! I bought it over the holiday sale, and it's even better now with more stuff.

[quote name='eastx']I hope these sales are teaching you guys not to buy hard copies any more. Financially, it's wayyyy better to just wait for a Steam sale.[/QUOTE]

It took me a while, but I learned this last year at some point. I was totally disinterested in Steam, but I think I downloaded it to play Hinterland (which turned out to not be such a great game, although the concept is awesome), then got Monkey Island Special through it. I was still against the idea of using it for games I could buy at retail. After all, retail is cheaper, and why should I pay so much for something virtual?

But then I started to notice that their sale prices ROCKED. I think I bought The Ship in this manner (for some absurdly low price).

I didn't get it until the holiday sale, though. That's when I knew I'd likely never buy a retail game again. Now I'm so Steam-focused that I won't buy a hard copy of a game period, not even if it's a great deal. I say, "I'll wait for Steam to have a deal on it instead."

(I play a few games on Impulse but only cause they're not on Steam.)

Sorry for the essay. Just saying. I also probably owe it to CAG for teaching me the virtues of Steam-centric PC gaming.

Oh! Uh, I forgot why I came here. Does anyone know why the "download demo" button is not working for me? It worked two days ago, but yesterday it stopped. I really have no idea what I could do to fix it. Steam and my computer have both been restarted multiple times since. What gives?

Thanks for the response.
I never played Telltale games, but I really enjoyed The Secret of Monkey Island.
I've been playing the free one, Sam & Max Season 1 Episode 4, from Steam for about 20 minutes and haven't found the fun yet but I'll give it a few-hours shot.

Steam had some issues displaying demo games in user purchased game list and it was fixed a day ago. I thought that had to do with it, but I just tried myself and it worked fine.
Exactly how is it not working for you?

Well, just in example, I go to that Max and the Crayon game's store page (probably not enough time to try out a demo before the new sale anymore), and there's the "Download Demo" button on its store page. I click it, and nothing happens. When it was working correctly, it would have taken me to my library and downloads or whatever. It doesn't do that, though, and the demo doesn't download.

PS If you don't like the free Sam and Max episode, you probably won't like Telltale's stuff, I'm afraid. :( Is there a demo of the first episode of the Monkey Island Telltale series? That's the one that really sold me.

What I can tell is that it might be a protocol issue. When you try to download demo, it connects through steam protocol then the Steam client receives it then starts whatever it is necessary.

One way is to restore the protocol with editing registry.
Assuming your are using Windows, open a notepad, copy and paste all the followings and save it as "steamprotocol.reg" then run it as administer.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\steam]
@="URL:steam protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\steam\DefaultIcon]
@="steam.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\steam\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\steam\Shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\steam\Shell\Open\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\steam.exe\" \"%1\""
BE SURE TO CHANGE THE LAST LINE TO WHERE YOUR STEAM IS INSTALLED. The path there is a default path to 32bit systems.
If yours is different note that you need to have double backslashes after folders.

If that doesn't work try launching Run from Start button at the bottom, and type the following:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" steam://install/xxxxx
where xxxxx is the number of the game

Very tempted on Metro 2033, I've just heard that it's very poorly optimized, thus it runs like shit no matter what kind of rig you have.

Also, is Freedom Force worth the $2?

Woo! That did it. I made the changes specific for my system and used the stuff you put in the box. Works just like normal now. Thanks dude. :) I dunno how I managed to mess it up in the first place. :s

Edit: Also, I want Warband. :) Darn them for selling the first game instead. That's gonna piss a lot of folks off when they figure out Warband is what Mount and Blade should've been. Aw well. (I'd probably buy Sam and Max for $10, too, but I still haven't played the first two seasons!)

I hope tomorrow is new deals and not repeats, but I'd imagine it will be repeats.

[quote name='SEH']Also, is Freedom Force worth the $2?[/QUOTE]

Oh glory yes, unless you can't stand turn-based strategy, goofy super heroes, or older games. Makes me wanna go play them right now.

Does anyone remember Superhero League of Hoboken? God did I love that game as a kid.

[quote name='Lorddraco07']Heard Metro 2033 is poorly optimized as well but only if you are trying to run the game completely maxed out is when it starts to show it.[/QUOTE]

That's exactly how I like to run my games.

I keep checking to see if they've switched Mount and Blade to Warband yet. Guess they really did mean to sell that old thing for $4 less than the superior version. Lame.

If you'd like "Golden Era" comics that are cheesy, you'll like the characters.

Gameplay-wise, it's team based combat that allows you to pause and enter actions. You can also play without pausing and it's pure real time action. RPG in the sense that you upgrade stats only.

I've got disc version and rebought at $2.00 during the last sale.

[quote name='Jesse_Dylan']Does anyone remember Superhero League of Hoboken? God did I love that game as a kid.[/QUOTE]

That game went freeware awhile back. I posted it on my list. Here is a direct link - Superhero League Of Hoboken

As for the person that asked about Freedom Force...It's worth it - If you are able to dl mods for it. I'm not sure if the STEAM version allows you to play all of the free mods for that gem but I had a blast downloading and playing mods, campaigns and skins of Marve, DC and other comic book company characters.

[quote name='SEH']That's exactly how I like to run my games.[/QUOTE]

there are some screen shots of it maxed on the steam forum. it looks absolutely amazing.
if theres anything that looks better id really like to know what that is.

i think it was running about 50fps on dual 470's
another user said he was able to max it with a 5870.

apparently if youre not running it in dx11 its a lot easier to handle, specifically the dx11 dof hammers the gpu.

[quote name='SEH']That's exactly how I like to run my games.[/QUOTE]

Weird. I thought people hated to run games at the max settings. Why would anyone do that? You're so weird. :bouncy:

I love it!! I'm gonna download it and play it again and see if I adore it as much as I used to. I thought the voice acting was pretty good for back then, too.

How would Crysis run on an intel q6600 Quad Core with an hd 5770 Radeon graphic Card? What settings do you think I could run it at? I'm hoping to get an idea as I figured this would be one of the more intensive games far as graphics and processing.

Also is blood bowl worth 20 bucks or ten through gogamer?

Crysis would run alright with that hardware. If everything is at stock, you could probably use medium settings and get decent frame rates. If you overclock your card and the quad, you could turn the visuals up even more.

Anyways, hoping for new deals, but if they have to do repeats, I really hope they have Episodes From Liberty City on sale for $15 again now that I actually have some cash to spend.

depending on the resolution it should run fine.
I think there are youtube vids of ppl playing it with different setups so check out that and check out some reviews for the hardware on some techsides usually there are some benchmarks for the graphic cards together with crysis.

Since it is 4th of july after all... i hope they have some massive discounts.
But who knows.
I bet empire: total ware will be on the list anyway :p

I estimate Crysis to be pretty playable on high settings, maybe really playable. Keep in mind the game also has some sort of super high graphics setting.

same setup and it runs pretty good on high settings with 4xAA at around 35-40 fps at 1680x1050. It's quite playable.

Get the retail version of Blood Bowl as you save a lot of money. Do keep in mind that they're releasing a sorta GOTY edition with the remaining teams in October or so.

Couple quick questions, both regarding co-op.

Do both Alien Breed: Impact and Sol Survivor support online co-op, or are they only local?

Whoa, a new version of Blood Bowl? I was seriously thinking of grabbing it for $20. It looks sooooo cool. I'd rather get the better version, assuming Steam will carry it. Maybe it'll be $20 right out the door.

I guess the only "if" remaining for me is Rocket Knight. Gotta try that demo. I know I'll want it; it's just a question of now at $7.50 (won't get to it for a while anyway) or later at $7.50 or potentially lower.

I bought Warband. $15 is a good price, even if it's lower some other time.

I feel guilty for waiting so long about Blood Bowl, but if there's a new version coming out, I'd be kinda dumb at this point to buy it unless it was $10 or under.

I think today I'll get Trine, Alien Breed, Sol Survivor, and Booster Trooper.

10 dollars on gogamer after shipping if you plan on getting the current blood bowl dark elves edition.

I think I'm all set from this sale. Plenty of games to play.
