The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

Thank you kindly. I am truly dense and underslept. I was seriously beginning to doubt Steam. I knew in the past where to find them (and they are very obvious once you know where to look) but apparently had a crisis of memory.

I just got a Kindle, so now I'm probably gonna spend hours downloading all these PDFs and shoving them on there. hehe. One of my main complaints with digital games was lack of manual (granted game manuals aren't often the behemoth joys they used to be), but reading on Kindle is a hell of a lot more pleasurable than on a PC screen.

So I have a...weird question. If you remove a friend, and they gifted you a game, does anything happen to the game?

Not that anyone pissed me off or anything, but doing the whole 4 pack deal seems like friends lists could get bloated pretty quick...

Went in on a 4pack with one and now he is not in my friendslist for some reason but i still have the game so I think you can remove all the friends you want :p

Nope.

Yo Jesse! Why the hell aren't you ever online? Are you still staying offline because you want to avoid that friend of yours? Remember that to block people, you click on the little arrow next to their name and click "block all communication." That should allow you to be online without fear of that guy talking to you.

And come on, you can't just say that you want to play co-op with people, add them and then never show up online.

I just bought SFIV through the steam sale. I'm having trouble getting it to run up to speed. I have an ASUS notebook. AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile M520 2.3ghz. 4 gb ddr2. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570. Will i ever get this to run at a high frame rate? I tried lowering the resolution and the best i got was about 55 fps according to the bench mark in the game, but it seemed very slow. Any tips? Thank you.

I'm having trouble with my cart. I suppose everyone is, huh?

(I'd totally buy The Void for $2.50 but not $5.00. Am I a bad person?)

(Also, I'm hoping for Lego Harry Potter for $15. Again, am I a bad person?)

I'm buying both due to you and the other CAGs' recommendations. Just can't go a day without a purchase, no matter how hard I try.

I'd totally buy The Void for $2.50 but not $5.

If anyone is interested in The Guild 2, I'd say grab it at that price. It's been patched a lot and was better than reviews stated anyway. (If you're interested in what it proposes, at least.)

Shatter is the best Arkanoid-type game ever IMO (and I wrote an FAQ for Arkanoid DS). The graphics are clean and impressive and the music is very good. The gameplay is fresh and exciting because the levels actually feel different from each other. Plus cool bosses. Has lots of Steam features (Achievements, Cloud, etc.), local co-op, and works great with controllers, too.

No amazing deals today, but Shatter looks fun for $2.50. Anyone know what the co-op on that is like?

EDIT

Saw the above post...co-op is local only?

Pro-tip: If your downloads are going at 30 kbps on your normal server (like mine were from Minneapolis), switch to somewhere bizarre and distant. I switched to India temporarily, and I'm currently downloading at 1 MB/s.

So shatter & red faction are good?
And here I thought I would get a day off from buying...

Also, lol, India bizarre? Isn't that your tech-support? XD

My downloads from Steam servers only limp along when there's a big game release/patch. In which case, I'll do like you and switch to Singapore and download at like 1.5mbs.

If there are no huge releases though, I'm always around 2-3mbs on the Chicago server.

If anyone here is doing a L4D 4 pack I am looking to get in on one since the previos group I was supposed to be in gave my copy to someone else.
Thanks

Holy shit this is easily the best day of the sale so far. Shatter is AMAZING, the absolute extreme pinnacle of the bat-and-ball game, Red Orchestra is kickass super fucking hardcore, and The Void is fucking wonderful. Flatout, Torchlight, and Red Faction are all awesome, as well.

Excellent selection, today. Buy buy buy!

I didn't really find myself being impressed with the void's steam store video, but it did get good reviews...same with flatout. Also, I generally like racers (grid, dirt, etc.) but didn't know if I'd like flatout...anyone have a chance to check out either of these two and can attest to their quality?

I wasn't really planning on buying Shatter, but after reading the deals thread, I bought it and tried it out with the expectation of it being a decent, modern Breakout. No, it's a freaking GREAT, modern Breakout. Even if you don't like Breakout or Arkanoid type games, I'd still recommend it.
After viewing the Void trailer, I kinda feel like I should get it. I wonder if it'll ever go lower than $5? (I'm really that cheap??)
Even if it dropped a penny in a year, some people would still be kicking themselves over not saving that one penny.

If you aren't going to play it any time soon, you might as well wait for the winter sale where it will be inevitably be at most $5 and take the chance it might be less than $5

That's logical. Unfortunately, I bought it last night in a fit of beer-induced glee. Oh well.

And holy crap, Thief, finally! In for that and Winterbottom. Now when will they sell Vampire for $2.99??

Would love to get Dragon Age on here, but I'd imagine the Deluxe plus Awakening combo will be $20 at the holiday sale. :)

Yeah, I'm waiting for the DA Complete collection before I rebuy it. I have a retail copy, but want to get it on Steam, but will wait for the edition that includes all the DLC and the expansion. I'll be doing the same thing with Fallout: New Vegas.

You're going to buy retail Fallout New Vegas and replace it later, or you're just waiting for a complete Fallout New Vegas pack?
You're going to buy retail Fallout New Vegas and replace it later, or you're just waiting for a complete Fallout New Vegas pack?
Haha, yeah i guess I didn't clarify. I'll be waiting for a complete Fallout: New Vegas pack. And then the subsequent deal on that. It'll be a while before that happens, but by then, all the DLC will be out, many of the bugs will have been squashed (hopefully by the devs, if not, then by the community with an unofficial patch) and there will be TONS of mods out.

Hell, I might just start doing this will all RPGs.
Does Steam keep MMOs (Star Trek Online, etc.) automatically patched? Or do you have to manually load the patcher to do so?
The game does the patching, not Steam (More often than not)

When you go to your games tab in Steam and launch an MMO, it just brings up the games official launcher. It's been like that for every MMO I've ever played through Steam. Steam doesn't do any of the patching/downloading of files.
Is there way to connect to games installed without connecting to steam?
If you're asking if you can avoid installing the awesome Steam client, no you can't. Can you play your games offline? Yes, most games work in Offline mode.

That kinda sucks, considering it patches all of the (non-MMO) games I have automatically.

Yup, I'm with you, Duke. If I'm really itching to play New Vegas and they have a good deal on it at some point, I'll buy it, then wait for deals on the downloads too if I want them.

But when I've already got Dragon Age (bought it before I was convinced about Steam) on disc... Same with Fallout 3, but I grabbed the GotY.

It's tough, because I often like to buy the new RPGs right away, but I HATE paying retail prices for downloads. I think I got a good deal on the Dragon Age disc on Amazon or something, and I played 40 hours or so. If I get the whole schebang on here for $20, I will no doubt spend at least another 40 hours, probably 100, so I guess I'm getting my money's worth all around. (Just would make a lot more sense not to ever buy it on disc.........)

Waited with Mass Effect 2 and was rewarded, but if I'd wanted to play it on launch day, yeah, I'd've been screwed into paying full price for the Steam download.

hmmm this sure is a lot of text from me just to say, "yep!"

Do you have Vsync enabled?

The reason it doesn't do auto-patching for MMOs directly via Steam itself is simply because most MMOs are updated so frequently, and they don't want to let the process of sending the updates to Steam to slow down the process.

A lot of patches are mirrored on other websites once they've been released, it wouldn't be too hard for Steam to take these patch files and apply them to your game, say while you were at work or out of town or whatever.

This Steam sale has me itching for my first ever desktop. I was took a glance at the Build-A-PC thread and the price range is as wide as its ever been. Any recommendations? I'll mainly be playing games using Steam. I already have a 360 and PS3, so many of the games I already play. The main games I would want to play are adventure games, maybe Torchlight, there was some immortals game (sci-fi adeventure or something). The possibilities seem endless, but I don't know where to start. Any advice? Probably should ask in the other thread as well.

What's your budget? But the guys who monitor that thread are probably more patient and better equipped to help you.

My credit card bill. Huge. Not just from Steam. Other stuff.

Not totally sure what. Gotta research my Amazon orders.

Oi.

I'm never going to eat out, go to a bar, buy coffee, or buy booze again. That will help. :) Eating out is a shaq fu-ing ripoff when you compare it dollar for dollar to what you can get during the Steam deals. Laugh if you must, but I mean it. I like to eat fruit, salad, stir fry, and things I make myself. That's affordable. Even eating cheap at Denny's has to run $5 (more like $10 or more), and think about the gaming goodness you could get instead!

$3 cup of coffee? Screw it.

$3 for a beer? Eff it!

(Good thing I still have a six-pack in the fridge...)

What Steam sale purchases are you guys most happy with?

I'm LOVIN' Flatout: Ultimate Carnage for $2. At first I was a little peeved because they ran out of CD keys but I got it the next day and I've been playing this sucker practically all night using Joy2Key and my crappy controller. I just love wreckin some cars and the singleplayer races are pretty fun. I like a good arcadey racer that isn't scared to wreck some shit. Forget that licensed crap. Hold down the gas and GO!
What Steam sale purchases are you guys most happy with?
Probably better to ask this question after the whole sales when people can actually download and play their newly bought games.

But so far, I'll say Shatter.
What Steam sale purchases are you guys most happy with?
Only bought Thief and Shatter but I have to say Shatter. Thief is fun, it just gets me frustrated is all.

Just off the top of my head, I'm pretty happy that I bought Red Faction: Guerrilla (thanks to CAGs convincing me--I would not have even thought about buying it otherwise). It's kind of like GTA on Mars, but you're a good guy, and you can break everything. If it was a little more optimized, it'd be even better, but hey, for $5, it's pretty fab. Knowing now what it's like, I'd even pay $5.50!

I saw Sanitarium is on sale at GoG.com for $7. I want it, and normally I might grab it at that price, but then I think about all the stuff I just bought here and how much cheaper it was, and I think.... I'll pass for now.

HOLY CRAP! New deals in about 20 minutes! If I don't pass out before then. Late night, early morning.

Borderlands is a good buy at $10 if anyone here is on the fence. Be warned though, the end of the game is awful.

Aside from that, no good deals for me today.
