Not a giant fan but I still play them. TF2 just annoyed me for the lack of tutorial and offline mode.
oh come on? serious?

Tutorial, I could see it expand to maybe a sandbox room... or such, but offline mode?

Like a story? but then you'd play with bots? that's like saying the Story/offline mode to every Unreal Tournament game was the epic award winning Oscar moments.

TF2 I lump with L4D, it's really not fun unless you play with friends. Kinda like monopoly. Sucks dick when it's just you.

Favorite Game? On STEAM?

Left 4 Dead - Part One

I know some people are tired of it...but I've been DL'ed a new map every Wednesday and Sunday...and that game has never disappointing me.

I feel bad that I got it for free. If that makes sense.

L4D 2 does not do anything for me...I think the brightness of the levels take away from the horror aspect.

I wasnt saying it need some big expansive offline mode with story or anything. I just dont like being dumped in an online game, especially a team based online game with no tutorial, offline mode or anything to practice/learn a game before playing it. Ill drop the subject though after this post because I think we already went over it a few pages back.

Gonna have to go with TF2 as well. Just got back into it and it's a blast to play with my roommates and it's still not done with new content.

NP and Done.

L4D 1/2 as well. It's great when you've got a large pool of friends to play with, but sometimes dealing with the widely differing skill levels can be a drag.

The aesthetics of the first are far better than L4D2, but the mechanics and gameplay (aside from nerfing the hunter) have been greatly improved in teh latter.

I still have that installed under my UT2k4. Is the mod still supported or just the commercial release?
I'm really enjoying Civ IV! (I have it on Impulse, though.)
Still technically a steam game so it counts. Is this your first play through of Civ IV Jesse?

Separate not I just finished Borderlands and I have to say while its probably not my fav steam game its definitely up there and def my fav steam game of last year. I am either going to start my second play through or do Zombie Island now...not sure which. And I def see myself playing through the game till I get all 4 classes to level 50. If people put some mods out for this game Ill be playing it for a long long time. My only complaint is that the max level of 50 was far too low. I think 75 with a final increase to 99 with new DLC really should have been how it was done.
Too bad Crisis 2 will have such huge requirements that it wont be possible to play the game until the year 2022...and even then it will take networking several computers together each running 4 graphics cards and about 12 processors each!
Maybe Crisis 2 will but Crysis 2 is supposed to perform a lot better than the original (and look just as good give or take) and will not only be released on PC but the 360 and PS3 as well. I haven't tried Warhead yet but it's supposed to run a lot smoother. You can even use modified configurations (or create your own) to make the games run better if desired. That's not to say that this game needs more patching done because it obviously does but the point is I think Crysis kicks ass.

but Killzone 2 wasn't 1080P native, just upscaled. DUnno about Uncharted 2, but you can't compare the performance of it ~680P @ 60FPS to actual 1920x1080 resolution on a PC @ 60FPS.. it'd take more than the PS3 to do that even though I admit Crysis isn't as well optimized, although Warhead runs a bit smoother. Anyway, my fav game is PvZ on steam, although currently I am feeling Trine, MW2, and Dragon Age Origins

Currently I am loving Star Wars Dark Forces. The only problem is it gives me a slight headache (like all games modeled around Wolfenstein). The headbobbing and textures just hurt my brain a little.

Favorite game of all time on Steam though would be Day of Defeat (original or source... doesn't matter same game).
Actually Crysis requires such high requirements because Crytek sucks at programming an efficient engine. Look at Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 running at 1080P 60fps and tell me that this is not true. To top it off Uncharted has a crazy far draw distance.

You're comparing a PC Engine vs a Console Engine on basis of programming. It doesn't work.

Every single person who owns a PS3 has the *exact* same capability. They have the same amount of RAM. They have the same performing GPU and CPU. The PS3 OS takes exactly the same amount of memory and operates in the exact same way. The only difference is Hard Drive Space and Consoles don't use a Page File, so it doesn't apply.

Compare this to a PC game where every single person who plays it will have a different system. Different CPU capabilities, GPU capabilities, RAM, Hard Drive Space (Which matters due to the use of a Page File), different OSes with different options, upgrades, patches, and other programs running in the background (AV, Firewall, Steam itself, people may have left IE open, IM programs, driver configuration programs, maybe a media player, etc etc).

I'm not contending that the Crysis engine isn't bloaty, but the way that you're comparing it is completely unreasonable.

Yes and I can do that because I am a programer and I make games. It is not unreasonable but fine I will concede your point that they are not direct comparisons. Even though they are really just dedicated gaming PCs and there is nothing preventing a studio from building a game for a specific performance benchmark. Crysis would not run perfect on ANY of the systems that were around at the time of it's release. I can point out that if you read the reviews of the time they would say "it will be great in a few years to come back and play it when our systems can actually run it"

Now explain why FARCRY #1 looks better on max settings then Crysis does on Minimum and still runs faster. Crysis looks like complete $%^& on minimum settings.

They did not take the time needed to optimize the engine.

You optimize for a target platform.. PC with XXX Specs, not some non existent computer that will be around in a few years when the game will look dated anyway.

OOOOOOOOO Nation Red was already an awesome awesome game(especially for the $5 I got it for at Holiday sale)but the new update adds 360 controller support. FREAKING SWEEET!

I think I've played maybe four short games on Settler difficulty. :) I'm KIND OF getting the hang of it now.. The manual really helps. I hate reading PDFs, tho, and I also hate printing them. :)

I'd pay Steam or someone money for printed manuals as long as they were... sold at cost.... Hey, come on, it's no freaking secret I'm CHEAP!

Also, I'm refraining from joining any of the arguments today, even though I have opinions. :) (What? He has opinions??)

Meh if you dont get the hang of it the game is still hella fun and easy enough on the early difficulties. I have played Civ 3 and 4 dozens of times and I still never bothered trying to get good at the game and frequently just play on easier settings. Probably part of that reason and part of why im reluctant to play online is because I enjoy playing a peaceful civ. I really enjoy pumping all my money into science early game and after grabbing a bunch of world wonders and other benefits before the other civs building all that stuff then while technically I could win a science victory I almost always instead go into culture produce mode and take over the globe with culture.

If only the real world truly did work like that....

Bah sorry guys! Completely checked for updates this mourning and when there were none forgot to update the QotD at least. Its up now though.

I think the US is trying to take over the world with culture. :)

And bombs.... hmm...

I haven't used a single military unit in my games so far. :) I have to wonder if on higher difficulty, the computer is more aggressive, or have I just been hanging out with non-violent leaders?

Overlooked... Maybe Silent Hunter 4...

It's a wonderful game that was on sale for $4.99 during the steam sale. I'm glad I picked it up.

Shattered Horizon, it offers a totally new FPS experience and that's pretty rare these days. Not to mention it was only 5 bucks on the sale (3.50 if you 4 packed it)

Overlooked:

Dawn of Discovery and 1701 A.D.

I wonder if we'll have a mid-week deal? I still haven't played the Divinity II or SpaceForce demos I downloaded last week. Jeesh. (Pretty sure I already know I'll like the former, but not want to buy it for more than $20, and probably think the latter is too darn hard. But we'll see.)

Heh trust me even turning the difficulty up a notch or two makes them much more aggressive. With each higher difficulty they get more and more annoying. I only play on like the third of like 10 difficulties or something like that and if I dont keep a fair amount of military units stationed in all my cities they will attack.

And if havnt used a single military unit means you havnt used in the sense of had to attack or defend you should know that the likliehood of the enemy A.I attacking you is based in large part on how many units you have built. So yes you may not have had to use them, but if you have a lot of them they will know you do and not attack you. Where as if you only have a few old crap units like warriors and only 1 or 2 in each city they will be much more likely to attack you.

Yes. All we need is a few more maps and voice. Its' presentation is a little bland right now, but once you get the hang on inverting, it's fun.

Son of a bitch! I am glad its on sale so I can grab the original for $5 but it still sucks grabbing AP for $10 at the big sale last month and now seeing the collection for $11. I cant help but think they did this on purpose. Put the sequal on sale for $10 knowing people will grab it and then be forced to pay $5 for the prequel later vs $11 for both!

Anyways sigh ill update the front page! O and nam ill add you on steam!
I'm having a hard time understanding what the KB games are. Someone care to enlighten me?
They have demos you can try. From what I recall of the demo I played it was kind of like an open world RPG type game, but when you got into a battle instead of it being typical RPG fair it warped you to a grid kind of like a strategy game. You would take control of your army and move them around the grid telling them exactly how you wanted them to attack. So basically explore the world completing quests and defeating monsters and leveling up/finding better stuff but with deep stratagy/chess style battles. Its supposed to have a lot of depth to it and from the demo it certainly seemed like it.
I'm having a hard time understanding what the KB games are. Someone care to enlighten me?
Hm... if you ever played an old school PC Heroes of Might and Magic game, it's a modern version of that.

You're a Hero General and you go out and explore a world in the interest of your Kingdom. As an RPG, you run around and get quests, complete them, and get gold/xp.

But you don't necessarily get XP for your own personal character, you use gold/xp for your armies, which is the main component of the battle system. You recruit and buy soldiers and fight opposing armies in a hexagonal grid.

It's definitely fun if you already know what it is and how it works, but for someone new to the series or style of gameplay, check out the demo first.

Jeez. That's cheap.

I already had the disc version of The Legend, and I'm buying it again. If I'd never had either of them, I'd be pretty pumped right now at the price for both.

Sounds pretty cool but nothing I'm in the market for.

Iv been thinking of writing reviews for a little bit now. Just finished my first one(though ill need to do some more grammar editing)and figured id post it here since its the game I wanted to discuss as overlooked!

Nation Red

It seems the market has been flooded with Zombie games recently. Off the top of my head we have Plants Vs Zombies, World at Wars Zombie mode, Zombie Appocalpse, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Zombie Driver, Zombie bowling…..I think ill just stop there! So, many people might see Nation Red and think who needs another zombie game! I would argue though that Red Nation isnt just another cheap zombie cash in, but a great classic arcade style survival game.
Red Nation sets you as a survivor who looks to be a white soldier in an Asian zombie wasteland! I guess setting your game to allow you to create a somewhat acceptable genocide simply because the Asians are zombies at least sets it apart from the rest of the flood of zombie games! Political correctness aside though the game is actually pretty good. The controls are solid, you use the WASD keys to move, E key to barrel roll/dodge and the mouse controls where you are shooting as well as your round house kick via right click. The most recent patch also added the option to use your 360 controller which is pretty darn sweet IMO. While the mouse allows a little better accuracy with your shooting I prefer the 360s twin stick scheme. With the mouse and keyboard I found myself trying to dodge and accidentally heading the wrong direction thanks to the E key being so close to WASD. The 360 controller makes it much easier to use the jump/dodge button which lets you do a barrel roll to try and escape zombies. I will gladly trade a little accuracy for the ability to not dodge in the wrong direction, PC vets may prefer WASD though!

One of the main things that makes Nation Red so fun though and sets it apart from many zombie games is the leveling up and the item drops. As you kill zombies in most of the game modes you will gain levels which grant you perks such as extra damage with your weapons, poisoned darts that periodically burst from your charcter or a counter attack. The zombies you kill besides giving experience also have a chance to drop new weapons such as machettes, uzis, shotguns and even some rather cool and unique weapons like the steam gun. Zombies can also drop power ups from time to time that will last for a few seconds giving benefits like a sentry gun that mows down enemies, invisibility, a doppelganger that fights with you or double experience. All in all there are dozens of perks, weapons and power ups that keep the game fresh!

There are several different modes you can play, most of which I find a blast. The main mode is mission mode which has you fighting massive waves of zombies in 18 different levels. Each level looks and plays the exact same as the rest of the game, but will have a twist over the other stages. One stage may have you surronded by zombies from the start, another has you protecting a civilian whom if he even gets hit once dies and others toss in tough boss zombies such as a zombie with a machine gun or meat hook. The next mode is survival mode which is the one mode I find really boring. Survival mode has a timer and asks you to survive as long as possible….problem is that you cant get any perks, new weapons or power ups. I usually love survival modes since if the base gameplay is good its just the same game with a tough objective. However without the perks, weapons and power ups it just feels boring and like any other arcady twin stick game. The final mode is free play mode which is what survival should have been! It removes the timer but technically there is still no end to a stage as far as I have seen. It just tosses you in there with wave after wave after wave of zombies including the bosses from mission mode and asks you to survive while racking up the biggest score possible. Outside the timer the big difference here is that you can now gain perks and new weapons/power ups again returning much of the fun to the game.

Outside the fun gameplay the game does offer a few nice options such as steam achievements, steam leader board for tracking your rank against other players, hell there is even a difficulty slider to make the game easier or harder on the fly when playing a non ranked game! For $10 I think this game is a fun little buy, and if you can find it cheaper on a steam sale as I did(whoo $5)it’s a steal. If nothing else the game has a demo so give it a try!

I have Heroes of Might and Magic 5 on Steam with 6 hours of playtime on record although I haven't played it for a long time and deleted it to have space for other games. Anything the King's Bounty games have over that or any differences that would make me buy that instead of just playing more of Heroes 5?

Anyone else plan on checking out Zero Gear? It's free until Sunday and on sale at 25% off for $15. A 4-pack is only $30 as well. I'm a sucker for kart racing games, and this one looks pretty fun and has achievements to boot.

It's free to play until Sunday, so that's really cool. I gave it a try and had a lot of fun with it. Some of the servers I joined seemed really laggy though (but my roommates might have been downloading something). But hey, it's free to try for 5 days! You should be able to decide if you like it or not by then.

Red Orchestra.

It is one of the best online FPS' out there and it comes with two great mods that give even more diversity to the game.

Mightier is really awesome, especially if you take the time to make use of the draw and scan-in via picture option. Making awesome doodles and scanning them in to make your character and gear is really cool. The gameplay itself is a little simple, but it has the same appeal as Drawn To Life.

Best of all, it is free.

So has/is anyone in this thread getting/gotten Global Agenda? I'm on the fence about the game as no one I know plays it and it seems to be VERY clan heavy but I'd play with some fellow CAGs!
