The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

anyone have a world of goo game for sale? I have a friend that wants it and I'm wondering if anyone is selling it for less than $7 (price on Amazon)
I'm also under the impression collecting the potatoes in the games has some effect. You can find how to get them here:

That's pretty much confirmed...from http://www.thinkwithportals.com/blog.php?id=5307&p=1

There's also still time to collect all 36 potatoes. Anyone accomplishing this feat by the time Portal 2 launches will receive a very special, non-hat-based reward.

Pre-ordering Portal 2 got me an extra copy of Portal....willing to gift it to someone if they have any random/cheap games they want to gift me that they have wasting away in their "gift" section as well. ;) Would take anything I don't own already pretty much, just PM me or message me on Steam (id = jamest1080)

Hmm... Was about to bite on the Potato sack, but only 4 games are Mac compatible... I shall have to ponder as I currently run windows in a Parallels VM....

Super Meat Boy is coming to Mac soon, and I can only imagine The Ball will soon too as it's the same guys who made Killing Floor which is on the Mac as well.

Didn't just unlock Portal 2...it gave me Portal 2...along with every other Valve game

And by "it gave me Portal 2" i mean that I never pre-ordered, yet here it is in Steam. Seriously, best damn marketing promo ever.

Well, for me it was.....Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.
Less than earth-shattering, I know. It was all I was missing from the pack.

I would've been in the same position. I already own like 90% of Valves catalog. Pretty awesome reward regardless though.

I already do too...but free Portal 2? For playing games in a pack I paid $39 for and following directions on a wiki? That's just pure awesomeness. There are also murmurs of some people being able to gift some of the parts they already had, but I haven't seen anything of the sort yet.

God damn. I already preordered Portal 2 and had every Valve game ever made except for Counter-Strike Condition Zero. So my 36 potato reward was.... CSCZ. Bummer. Plus I don't see any extras in my gift list yet.

Wow, congrats. Good thing you didn't buy Portal 2.

Speaking of, just beat it. The ending was pretty sweet, if only a little unsatisfying.

You should consider getting Boot Camp. I use it to game on my Mac, definitely a lot better than using a VM.

The latest Macs no longer support installing XP via boot camp and I'm waiting for an extremely good deal before installing Win7.

Win7 for $30 from the MS store isn't a good enough deal?

Restart Steam and re-check your gifts. Just checked mine, and I have giftable copies of every Valve game I had previously owned...Portal, TF2, Half Life 2 (and all it's episodes), L4D 1 and 2...all there. You'll probably have a giftable copy of Portal 2 there as well.

Yep, finally showed up. Feeling alright with that. Sold Portal 2 for $30 and gifted the rest to a bunch of buddies.

Glad Valve decided to do this. They even gave me a gift copy of the one game I received as a reward earlier.

Some strangeness with my gift copies. After multiple restarts, I'm missing the original CS, HL2: Lost Coast (free, I know), and HL: DM - Source.

I've also got 2 copies of HL2, as well as a "Half Life 2 - Episode 1", and a "Half Life 2 - Episode One".

Well, beat campaign and co-op in their entirety today in about 10 hours, give or take an hour (The "X hours played" is wonky for P2)

Absolutely loved it to death, but unless there's some freebie DLC or the developer tools extend the life of it, I'd have a hard time recommending it to someone at full MSRP. There's not a whole lot of replay value. It was damn fun at the time though!

I guess if it's a choice of this or 1 night out to dinner and a movie, I'd pick P2 all the way. But if it's P2 vs. 4 games that add up to the price of it, I'd probably say wait it out for a sale.

Could those be leftovers from your (presumed) registration of the Orange Box? I had extras of HL2 and HL2: Episode 1 from that, with HL2: Episode One showing up from the Potato thing.

Steam seems to be rounding down on Time Played. On my steam client, it shows 7 hours, on my steam profile, it shows 7.6 hours.

How did you find the co-op? I was working on it with some random person online, started at the start and worked through the courses, but I was feeling pretty bored near the end of the Bridge series.

Playing with a random and playing without a mic seem unbarable to me. 90% of the fun was arguing about how to solve problems and the "OH OH OH OH I GOT IT" moments of the tougher puzzles. If you haven't got a friend to go through it with, I'd imagine it's miserable.

We knocked it out in one shot because it was too damn fun.

I had the Orange Box, but didn't have HL2/Ep1 before to give me those gifts. I'm guessing that since, in the beginning, the OB gift copies of HL2/Ep1 were not showing up on people's accounts if they already had been granted them from the actual Orange Box (as well as Portal 2 for those who had already gotten a gift copy from the 2-pack), Valve just added those gifts to anyone who had the OB on their account.

I'm guessing Co-op would be more enjoyable when played with friends. Treating our in-game speech to be more robotic would be a rather comical option, as well. "Hello? Are you still there?"

Hey, quick question guys.

I just got Steam the other day, and I'm new to this, so bear with me. I seem to remember reading that if you activate a boxed retail game on Steam that you can't then activate it/use it outside Steam too (not concurrently, just that it becomes "locked" to Steam.) Is this true? I've got a few games to add, but I've never been a big believer in "the cloud" so giving up my boxed copies is something I'm hesitant to do.

Most games that activate on Steam are required to do so, as they use it as their form of DRM. For example Fallout New Vegas HAS to use Steam to run, but Unreal Tournament 3 can be activated on Steam or played without Steam. For most games that CAN activate on Steam there's no option at all to play without it. You'd have to post specific games for specific answers.

This is the list of all games that are possible to activate on Steam. You should know that with other games, you can add them to your game list as a "Non-Steam Game," which just simply adds a shortcut to your Steam games library for easy access.

That makes sense. I'm assuming that those games you're talking about are Steamworks, correct? In that case, the only one I could ask about is Race 07 (since the others are Steamworks). I don't see any reference to Steam on the package, but it looks like it can be activated on Steam according to their list.

Thanks for the help.

From the link I posted of games accepted:
"RACE 07 CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q"

I know it can be activated on Steam, my question was whether that would "invalidate" the key through normal, non-Steam use in the future as I've read that's the case (but whether it has any merits or not, I'm not sure.) Since it's not a game that requires Steam but can be activated on Steam, I'm not sure how it's handled. Hope that helps explain my question. :)

From the sound of things Race 07 doesn't need Steam. So you should be able to play and launch the game fine without Steam. If you activate it on Steam it just means you'll basically have a free downloadable backup of the game, doesn't prevent you from playing it installed without Steam.

Perfect, that's what I wanted to know. Thanks! :)
I just bought and discovered the Universe Sandbox last night.

This game I can tell is going to take up hours of my life. It's something I kinda wanted for a long time but no one has even been able to make it.
Buying this right now, I saw it when it came out and have been wanting it since.
