CONSIDER THIS THE NICE RESPONSE.

DAMN NO-PLAYING-SUPER METROID KIDS THESE DAYS!
This should come as no surprise to you, Strell, but I haven't played it either. And I ain't no kid - I've got a few years on ol' Shrike, even...

Let's see, 1994, eh? That would be the year after I got married and the very year that I was finishing up my Masters thesis. I didn't have no damn time for games back then ;).

My roommate is downloading Super Metroid, probably as I'm typing this, so I'll have opportunities to finish what I started--but could not finish--all those years ago.

I've played Super Metroid a ton on the SNES when it came out, and revisted it via emulation, so I skipped this round.

I did get Neutopia and it's really a decent game if you enjoy Zelda 1 gameplay. :)

King of the Hill Quote:

Hank's boss [Buck Strickland]> It's alright, Old Top. I know you don't have sex.
Hank> Well that is not exactly accurate.

You = Hank. So I'm not even surprised anymore.

:p

:)
No. If you'd send some points my way, I'll reconsider, 10,000 points man.
Actually now I'm a 9,500 points man :(

I am pretty sure the reason why I never played SUPER Metroid was because I never liked Metroid. I don't know what it was about that game, but I just didn't like it at all. With that, I never even bothered to try Super Metroid--but as I can see that's TOTALLY my loss!
Metroid is one of several "beloved" NES series I couldn't stand but whose successors I adored. I also hated Metal Gear and was indifferent to the first 3 Castlevanias (and everything else before Symphony).

Remember when new console generations meant making the gameplay more appealing and more in-depth at the same time? You don't see that as much anymore. And damn, do I feel old. Don't mind me; I'm in a pissy mood. ;)

Funny you should mention that 'cause I had a lot more back when Super Metroid was released - part of the less time for games thing ;).

Now I only have time for your Mom.

Meanwhile, I wake up today and am about to re-play this pretty awesome game with no knowledge of opening up them damn orange doors...lol :whistle2:(

Whew. Finished Lolo last night. Some of those later puzzles are pretty damn hard. Looks like they have me locked into versions 2 and 3 now.

Regarding the ending
I just about fell over when I saw the ending animation. All these puzzles and levels and you walk up to the boss and hit him with an egg. Too funny.

Now onto Super Metroid for the 3rd or 4th time.

I didn't have an SNES as a kid, so I never played Super Metroid. However, my fiance did, so he immediately downloaded it after work and played it all night. He didn't make his goal of beating it in one night tho.

I remember saving up over summer for Super Metroid and just flipping out every time I saw it in Nintendo Power. It was the ultimate. Downloading tonight. Maybe Neutopia as well.

I'm torn between the usefulness of the X-Ray Scope. I use it, see nothing, then forget to switch it when running from an enemy, getting hurt in the process. Then I use it again out of rageful spite, and find a hidden path to an upgrade.

So last night Europe got:
Lunar Pool NES
Wrecking Crew NES
Cratermaze TG16

Australia got the same first 2 games--but they got Neutopia instead of Craztermaze, because that came out there a few weeks ago.

And we already know that Japan got
Vollyeball NES
Sonic 3 Genesis
Ordyne TG16

I don't remember Wrecking Crew at all...? I wonder if we'll get it Monday?

I dont own a Wii, but i would buy one if they added mother 1 and mother 3, dragon quest 5 and 6, beyond shadowgate, rondo of blood, neotopia 2, bonk 3 et all.

There is absolutely no reason for me to drop down a ton of $$$ to play common Nes, Snes and N64 games.

If they made those games available at launch, then i would think they would have sold many many more Wii units. But that is just my 2 cents. I can understand that mother 1 and 3 and dq 5 and 6 would be a bitch to translate, but the rest are all USA releases so there is absolutely no excuse. On the plus side, it is good to see air zonk on the list. But imo the list so far is very weak sauce.

They keep selling out already!

Isn't Earthbound 0=Mother 1=Translated but never released?

Well not having played Super Metroid since 94 or 95, it took me about 10 hours to beat it this time with 80% completion. I thought i'd get a higher completion, I missed 1 energy and 1 reserve tank.

I got the shitty ending because it took me so long to beat the game, maybe i'll go back and get the better ending sometime.

Well thats clearly it then, they couldnt risk the extra demand turning violent so they didnt release those games to the VC at launch so as to make certain the demand was just over the max they could produce. This was a better result than letting demand get so far beyond what they could produce, people would riot when shipments arived at stores. I'm certain Reggie and Iawata are sitting quietly on their thrones relieved of the crisis they averted.

Really, they would have sold more than EVERY UNIT MADE? I want to see your logic, but this statement really wasn't thought out at all.

So guys, what is everyone getting for their first game of Super Metroid? :D

I wasn't going my absolute fastest, but I got 2:53 with 100%. I don't know if I'll ever top my 1:37(final save) on my SNES cart though. :(

Fastest I've ever pulled off was 2:50 at 100%, but that was about 8 years ago. I think I"ll end up at 95% around the 4:00 mark when I finish this weekend.

Wow, 8/20 was easily the best week ever for the VC. Super Metroid is one of the best games ever and Shinobi III is ridiculously good as well.
Isn't Earthbound 0=Mother 1=Translated but never released?
true enough. From what i understand, the reason why it was going to be called earthbound zero for the NES was because it was going to be released after earthbound for the SNES. I dont have any sort of proof other than bits and pieces off the net, but supposedly earthbound zero was manufactured and ready to ship to stores until it was canned at the last minute by nintendo.

And furthermore, there are a few of the carts around(that never got shipped) that are just floating around out there. so yea it might not take much to translate that at all. But DQ5, DQ6, mother 3 and the turbografx games would take some translation and localization. That can cost $$$

and to the rest, i know nothing os system sales(obviously). i'm what you would call a casual gamer, i play 3 or 4 videogames a year. If i took out the SNES or the NES from storage, it would be more like 9 or 10 per year. i think the VC system is pretty weak so far. They are releasing a lot of common snes, NES, N64 and turbografx games.

If they are going to have this feature of playing older games, then why not start with the best and the ones that people would find impossible to get their hands on? They have some great games sure, I would argue that super metroid is the greatest gave ever made. But no chrono trigger? I guess it is tougher to make the third party games happen, but why release bonk 1 and 2 but not bonk 3? why release neutopia but not neotopia 2?

Hopefully, all of the games i mentioned find their way on the list, and when they do i have a hunch that loads of old people(30+) like me will jump on board and buy a wii. Laugh all you want

...No.

Earthbound for NES is pretty much the same game as the SNES version...just the graphics are 8-bit. It was translated here, in America, but never released for unknown reasons. The title 'Zero' comes from collectors and NOT Nintendo. They had no idea what to call it and since the SNES version was called Earthbound they figured 0 or zero would be OK. The game was 'found' I think 8-10 years ago. I remember being in the thread on a newsgroup as the guy posted pictures and such about it. It was pretty exciting at the time. Before...it was simply rumored and was proven to be true about its existence by various ex-Nintendo Tips and Tricks employees (I forgot their real name...you would call them up and ask them a question and they would answer it)

Way off-base on this one - have you ever *played* Mother? It may have a similar battle system and themes, perhaps, but it's nowhere near the same game.
If they made those games available at launch, then i would think they would have sold many many more Wii units.
Come the fuck on man, you have got to be fucking kidding me. There's no way you didn't know they've been consistently sold out almost everywhere since launch.

Maybe they would've sold one to you instead of the other guy that bought it, but damn man, they can't possibly sell more than all of them.

Earthbound Zero is the name given to the NES translated version of Mother. Nintendo Power did a few "upcoming games" pieces about it (well, at least one). I thought the story was that it was fully translated and had been fully planned out to be released - they had made poster maps as pack-ins and the like - but by the time it was ready to actually be released, marketing decided they couldn't figure out a way to successfully ...well, market it, so it got canned at the last minute. By this time, the SNES had officially launched, so the common theory is that a last-gen offbeat RPG didn't really have a place in American audiences.

It fell into obscurity for a while at that point. The accepted story is that there are a few carts roaming around that contain the true, fully-translated game (officially translated, even, straight from Nintendo's internal teams), and that some people released the ROM onto the 'net some years ago. I even remember reading something about how if you did get the ROM and try to play it, you could get a certain percentage through the game (I want to say about 2/3rds) and then you'd see a screen that would say "Warning: This is an unofficial ROM of this game, play will cease immediately" (or something to that effect).

Mother 2 over in Japan is essentially Earthbound, and if we ever got Mother 3 over here, it would appear as Earthbound 2. If Mother 1 ever gets release, they'd have to call it Zero or some other word to denote that it was the first game in the series.

Whether or not I'm right in this, I don't know. I just have read a few histories of the game and that's what I remember. I'm sure starment.net has much clearer history on the matter.

Well I beat Super Metroid last night. Damn that was so fucking easy compared to the original Metroid. I never died and Mother Brain was super easy.

All I now about Earthbound at this point (aside from Strell exalting its ending from "very, very good and novel" to "greatest ending ever") is that the potential for seeing Mother 3 in the states evidently rests on how well Earthbound sells when it hits the VC.

My computer is in the shop, so I don't have a link, but a Mother 3 translation groups claims Nintendo *may* be interested in purchasing their work should Earthbound sell like snow cones in the summertime when it hit the VC. Which means, of course, if there is even a *REMOTE* possibility of this being true, each and every one of you and your family members is obligated to buy Earthbound.

Hmm. I slept in today, and thought "Oh shit! It's Monday"...well, apparently it doesn't matter..why aren't they releasing the info?

So then we are getting DK Jr Math then, right?

Breath of Fire 2 is rumored to being released. Dunno what else tho.

edit: from another forum

The "word on the street" is this for tomorrow:

Landstalker or Vectorman
DK Jr. Math
Breath of Fire II

Let it be known I have no factual proof of this, but those seem to be the recurring games I see when I google VC and 8/27. Let's hope it's true.
