Wrestlemania is to WWE as the Super Bowl is to the NFL, the World Series is to MLB, the Stanley Cup Finals is to the NHL, the NBA Finals is to the NBA, and the World Cup is to FIFA in the sense that it is the most important event of the year in sports entertainment. It is the largest and longest running of all major wrestling events in the world and has been described to be "The Grandaddy of Them All" or "The Showcase of the Immortals".

----------------

Wrestlemania 23 takes place April 1st, 2007. The buildup since last year's event has been an interesting one, as overall merchandise and house show sales have skyrocketed, while PPV buys have taken a downturn.

wm23poster.jpg

The card (at this writing) is as follows:

*World Heavyweight Championship: Batista (c) vs. The Undertaker
* WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Shawn Michaels
* Hair vs. Hair match: Bobby Lashley (w/Donald Trump) vs. Umaga (w/Vince McMahon and Armando Alejandro Estrada) (w/Steve Austin as Special Guest Referee)
* Money in the Bank ladder match: Edge vs. CM Punk vs. King Booker vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. Matt Hardy vs. Finlay vs. Randy Orton
* The ECW Originals (Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, The Sandman and Rob Van Dam) vs. The New Breed (Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker and Kevin Thorn) (w/Ariel)
* WWE Women's Championship: Melina (c) vs. Ashley Massaro
* Kane vs. The Great Khali
* WWE United States Championship: Chris Benoit (c) vs. Montel Vontavious Porter

The two main events paint a similar overall picture, but have drastically different histories behind them. Both matches present an "Old Legend vs. New Hero" approach; however, the expected outcomes are not likely to match (I may have to eat my words on this one). John Cena has become a merchandising juggernaut and huge draw among younger kids, and won over some of his detractors over the past year with strong efforts in his major matches. Batista has seemingly fallen from grace, going from the most popular performer in the company to a slower, staler world champion. This doesn't necessarily indicate what the outcomes of the matches will be, but popular opinion seems to side with Cena retaining, and Undertaker taking the title from Batista. Of special note here is The Undertaker's winning streak. If he defeats Batista, he will be 15-0 at the event, a record that will likely never be surpassed.

The most unique match (and the match grabbing the most public interest) is the Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley encounter. If Umaga loses, Vince McMahon will have his head shaved. If Lashley loses, the same will happen to Donald Trump. Stone Cold Steve Austin threatens to "steal the show" as the referee.

The annual Money In The Bank match has received a bump in participants this year, and will now include 8 people. This match will surely feature the most amazing stunts of the night. Like the world championship match, there is an undefeated Wrestlemania streak on the line here as well: Edge's. However, a loss in an 8 way match may be downplayed by the company as not a "real loss" if he does not come out the winner.

The ECW Originals vs. ECW New Breed match should paint a telling picture of what the future of that troubled brand will be.

Melina vs. Ashley Massaro does not fill most fans with hope for an outstanding contest. It may be used to "take the crowd down" after a major match like one of the main events or the Money In The Bank contest.

Kane vs. Great Khali...well, they look cool standing next to each other. This could be an entertaining weapons-filled match.

MVP vs. Chris Benoit for the U.S. Title will likely open the show, and could be an entertaining contest if MVP is on top of his game and they are given more than 8 minutes.

Wrestlemania III took place in March of 1987 and featured two of the most noteworthy matches of the 80's, both for very different reasons - Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant, and Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. The event also set an indoor attendance record of 93,173 people.

hogan-andre.jpg

The card was as follows:

*The Can-Am Connection (Rick Martel and Tom Zenk) defeated Cowboy Bob Orton and The Magnificent Muraco (w/Mr. Fuji) (5:37)
*Billy Jack Haynes fought Hercules (w/Bobby Heenan) to a double countout (7:44)
*Hillbilly Jim, The Haiti Kid and Little Beaver defeated King Kong Bundy, Little Tokyo and Lord Littlebrook in a Mixed Tag Team match (3:23)
*Harley Race (w/Bobby Heenan and The Fabulous Moolah) defeated The Junkyard Dog in a "Loser Must Bow" match (4:22)
*Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake (w/Johnny Valiant and Dino Bravo) defeated The Fabulous Rougeaus (Jacques and Raymond) (4:03)
*Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis (w/Jimmy Hart) in a Hair vs. Hair Match (6:54)
*The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) and Danny Davis (w/Jimmy Hart) defeated The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) and Tito Santana (8:52)
*Butch Reed (w/Slick) defeated Koko B. Ware (3:39)
*Ricky Steamboat (w/George Steele) defeated Randy Savage (w/Miss Elizabeth) to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship (14:35)
*The Honky Tonk Man (w/Jimmy Hart) defeated Jake Roberts (w/Alice Cooper) (7:04)
*The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff (w/Slick) defeated The Killer Bees (Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell) (5:44)
*Hulk Hogan defeated André the Giant (w/Bobby Heenan) to retain the WWF Championship (12:01)

Despite not being a technical classic and not truly being the "passing of the torch" match that Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan made it out to be (Hogan was already clearly the man in the company at the time and Andre was semi-retired), Hogan vs. Andre was still the biggest main event in the company's history up to that point. It solidified Hogan as the most well-known wrestler in North America, if not the world. Hogan's bodyslam of Andre has become arguably the most iconic moment in the company's history.

On the other hand, the Savage-Steamboat Intercontinental Title match was perhaps the greatest WWF match of all time up until that point. The fantastic build-up to the match featured Savage crushing Steamboat's throat with the ring bell, "retiring" him for good. When Steamboat came back for revenge, the match was set. Both men went all out, and the speed of the two during the match, even by today's standards, was almost incredible. After well over 20 pin attempts by both, Steamboat emerged as the winner with a bodyslam reversal into a small package as the crowd went berzerk.

The Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis match was billed as Piper's "retirement" match and had the hair vs. hair stipulation as well. Piper defeated Adonis in a short, fun match with his signature sleeperhold. After Piper and the newly-turned face Brutus Beefcake shaved Adrian's head, Piper was left alone in the ring to say goodbye to the fans and receive an amazing sendoff. In fact, as Piper was about to exit, an overjoyed fan jumped in the ring and hugged Piper...Piper even hugged him back and shook his hand just before security tackled him to the ground. It's difficult to fathom just how over Roddy Piper was, both as a face and heel during his original WWF run if you were not a fan at the time, but it was one of the more genuinely emotional moments I can recall in the WWF.

The attendenace of the event was announced as 93,173 people. This number has been disputed over the years, most notably by Zane Bresloff (who worked for the WWF/Titan at the time), who claimed it was closer to the 78,000 range. THIS number is disputed as well, with people claiming that 78,000 is what the stadium holds for Lions football games, and the addition of all the floor seats added several thousand to that number. Whatever the true number is, it was an awesome sight to behold.

On a personal note, WM3 was the first event I ever attended. I was only 7 years old at the time, and whenever the crowd popped I would cover my ears for about the first hour since the noise was so overwhelming to me. I was seated right next to the aisle and got to hi-five Rick Martel as he came down for the opening contest. I was terrified of the heels at first, and I sat in scared silence as Orton, Muraco, and Fuji walked right by me. My dad had to reassure me that they weren't going to come over and beat me up.
Thanks. Wanted to go out with a bang since I'm going to try to give up wrestling after next Sunday.
How come? If you don't mind me asking.
How come? If you don't mind me asking.
I just think it's time. My viewing habits have tapered off drastically over the past 2 years (I've bought exactly two PPVs since WM20...the two One Night Stand shows). I rarely watch Impact or Smackdown, and it seems more like an annoyance for me to sit down and watch Raw than a pleasure. I actually think the product has been better than usual lately, but I just have too much other stuff I really should be concentrating on. Another problem is I find myself going to wrestling websites to read up on stuff when I should be doing other stuff (like work). Of course, I come to this site at the same time and I don't plan on leaving here anytime soon. One thing at a time! I'm only human!

I've been watching for almost 22 years now (I just turned 28 on Friday). I think I've seen just about everything they can throw at me (good and bad) at this point. I'll probably check in once in a while but my days of knowing what's going on with everything are winding down. I'll probably be looking to you guys occasionally if I have stupid n00b questions.

Just hopin' I get to go out with an Undertaker title win. We'll see.

The Grand Daddy of 'em all and this time I'll be there! Wish I coulda gone to WM III, said sadly my dad was not as cool as your dad when it came to going to Wrestling events.

That's a pretty awesome first event, if I do say so myself.

For SoCal indy wrestling fans, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has not one, but two HUGE double weekends coming up. The first is All Star Weekend V, featuring Kaz Hayashi/Alex Shelley and Low-Ki/Davey Richards on night one, and Low-Ki/Samoa Joe, Davey Richards/Chris Hero, and Alex Shelley/Claudio Castagnoli on night two.

The second double weekend is PWG's Tag Team Tournament, where over two nights PWG will crown new tag team champions. Teams included are The Briscoe Brothers, The Kings Of Wrestling, Roderick Strong and Jack Evans, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, Masato Yoshino and Naruki Doi, and more.

Useless bit of info: that Hogan/Andre picture with the purple backdrop that I used above was the cover of the official program. I still have it somewhere.

I really, really wanted to include some of the pictures I had taken there, as I had a few cool shots since I was right on the aisle...no luck though. I'm sure they're around here somewhere...

Anyone else amused that there's two versions of the Dusty Rhodes Classic Superstar figure? One with the blotch, one without. :)
Will Jake The Snake ever get his day
Casey and I went over that towards the end of the last topic, we'll finally get back to Jake (assuming no other wrestlers die) after this topic. Kanerobot wanted to do a special WM topic though, and that is why we have this one!

I was watching Judgment Day 2000 last week, which had the Guerrero-Malenko-Saturn 3 way for the European Title. That was a great match, but the finish sucked. It involved Chyna, a bouquet of roses, and a pipe.

One or both look like Trevor Murdoch.

I hope they don't exclude TNA guys from this list just because they're TNA guys. Raven, the Dudleys, and Rhino at least deserve consideration.

I know it probably shouldn't go here, cause it's MMA and not wrestling but, damn, Zuffa (The company that owns UFC) finally bought Pride FC.

Source: MMAWeekly
It's been rumored for months but now the deal is completed. Several major Japanese newspapers (including "SportsHochi") are confirming today that Frank Fertitta of the Zuffa company (which owns UFC) has purchased PRIDE Fighting Championship.
Fertitta will disband Dream Stage Entertainment (the former parent company of PRIDE) and form a new entity that will be seperate from UFC and its parent company, Zuffa, LLC. Pride 34 on April 8th will be the final PRIDE show under the DSE company.
PRIDE will continue to run shows in both Japan and the United States.
Although PRIDE will be run seperately from UFC, there are plans to run an annual supershow event on Pay-Per-View featuring fighters and dream matches from both companies (!!).
Recently there were rumors that the McMahons were interested in entering the world of mixed martial arts and were considered potential buyers for PRIDE. Those plans have clearly fallen through.
There is a press conference scheduled for tomorrow at the Roppongi Hills Arena in Tokyo to announce further details on this huge acquisiion.

Sucks for WWE, since they expressed interest in working with or investing in PRIDE. I wouldn't be surprised to see UFC take a far more aggressive stance on competing for your "sportz entertainment dollar" in the next year or so. They're having a hell of an easy time, IMO, in gaining new fans from disillusioned pro wrestling fans.

God I'm old. I remember Wrestlemania III like it happened yesterday and I never liked wrestling at any point in my life (I used to watch it once a year at a friend's house who was a wrestling nut).

Also, how funny is it that the name "Wrestlemania" stuck? In the 80s the word "mania" could be tacked to anything which I guess is the equivalent of "Xtreme" today... more things today should end in "mania"...

Strange...Meltzer and Sherdog don't mention the sale yet. Wouldn't surprise me if true, though.

*edit* - wow, it looks like K-1 is looking to buy Cage Rage at the same time. We may be right back to where we started with two major promotions...although UFC is going to be next to impossible to knock off now.

javeryh - agreed. One of the most unintentionally funny interviews I've seen in recent years involved Superstar Billy Graham saying "the WWF was the first company to take that word - 'mania' - and attach it to something like that and turn it into something." HAY GUYZ REMEMBER WHEN WRESTLEMANIA WAS BEFORE BEATLEMANIA

Good, I can't wait to see Fedor rape the UFC heavyweight division.

Apparently USA will be getting the last hour of the HOF saturday, but for those who want to see the whole thing, WWE.com will be airing the first two hours on their site.

Wonder who they'll save for the TV airing this year?
Aren't the releases usually worded differently? No best wishes in his future endeavors?
Usually yes.

Looks like something bad happened if they're not putting "best wish in the future" in the release statement. I wonder if it was related to the steroid bust.

It was something juicy-gossipy-good, that's for sure. Don't know what it could be, but my guess is drug related. I'm not ready to cry "steroids," as there are plenty of culprits out there for wrestlers to get hooked on.

If you'll be happy to see WWE fail, then I guess you want to see nationally-aired pro wrestling die for a long time in the U.S., because that's what'll happen.

Anyways, WWE just did random testing last week, and today Mercury gets canned. Meltzer worded his mention of this today in such a way that it appears there's more to the story. He also mentioned a lot about the PRIDE sale to UFC.

Man.. looking at that stadium pic of Wrestlemania III, it really makes me upset.

Remember when wrestling was..really exciting? No, I'm serious. It was so awesome when everything was all serious, and wasn't all about sex, crazy CRAZY storylines, booze, rap, etc. They would hold real interviews and yeah, they were corny..but still.

But whatever... :(

Man, that Mercury thing is a shocker, I was expecting to see MNM vs Londrick added to the WM card. Damn, where does this leave Nitro, that guy is too talented to be without a match.

And Flair, dammit. Why isn't Flair facing anyone? I don't care if he's 68, he should still have a match, cripes o' Friday this is Wrestlemania.

Here's something new on Mercury - I just got this off a board so I'm not sure where it came from originally or how accurate it is -
There was an incident backstage at Raw this afternoon, which resulted in Joey Mercury being fired and Stephanie McMahon being taken to a local hospital. Details are still coming in, but the early word is that Mercury snapped when the creative team told him that he and his partner Johnny Nitro would not be appearing at Wrestlemania 23. Not much is known, but word is that Mercury charged at Stephanie McMahon, knocking her into the side of a desk. He was immediately restrained by the rest of the creative team, and fired on the spot. Vince McMahon is said to be furious at the harm caused at his daughter, who had to be taken to a Chicago hospital for evaluation. Mercury may face criminal charges and possible jail time if WWE decides to follow through. Dave Meltzer will have much more on this situation as he gets it

If that's true, then WOW. I kind of doubt it being true though, as wellness-related issues seem more likely. As for WWE being great back when it was "serious", it's been more serious now than it has been in a long time, and it damn sure wasn't serious in '87 when it had the Birdman (with bird), the Bulldogs (complete with bulldog), the Killer Bees, Mean Gene in leterhosen, and Hulkamania runnin' wild! It was goofy fun that rarely had serious angles on it.

Eh, that's probably false, since I suspect Mercury succumbed once again to his drug issues which led to MNM's split after losing the tag titles at Judgment Day 2006. But like you said... If it's true, wow. Sucks that he got fired, either way.

By the way, does anyone know where I can go to view a streamof WrestleMania 23? The link I used before is no longer good. Scorch and Sporadic, I am looking at you. Please PM me, somebody, if you have a link.
