Thrift Store Thread 2012

Ugh, got hosed at Goodwill today. Picked up a Lego Star Wars Jabba's Palace set which was a salvage from Target for $55 figuring I could flip it for at least $100. Didn't think to open it up in the store since it was all taped up, but when I did open it, it was missing the figures! Now I'm going to take a loss on it. Oh well, lesson learned.

I don't know if it's universal, but Target merchandise at my GW stores is returnable for 7 days with receipt.

Our GW is 7 days on anything with receipt.

I guess I could try, but my receipt say all sales final except on electronics

Well, everything is 7 days at mine, but only Target and electronics are cash refunds. Anything else is store credit.

:lol:That's a hell of a lesson to learn, spmahn. I'm leery when buying $3-5 games cuz I'm afraid I'm gonna get fucked over somehow if I try to resell them. There's no way in hell I'd pay $50+ for something without fully testing or inspecting it in the store before buying it.

Meh, cost of doing business. I'm going to try and return it tomorrow, but if I'm not successful in doing so, I should have no problem flipping it for $45 dollars or so, so a $10 loss isn't TOO horrible. The problem with this shit from Target is they cover the thing with packing tape, so it's almost inpossible to inspect in store.

Are you kidding me? Even if the items I'm picking up now from thrift stores were in a package that they shrinkwrapped, if it's something that may not be complete or may not be functional, then I'm testing the hell out of it before I buy it.

I learned my lesson with that surround sound system last year from Salvation Army for $20.

The only exception to this rule is if it's under $10, like that Xbox I picked up last week for $5 that's HDD is kaput.

But if I were paying as much as you did for that Lego set, I'd even go so far as to look up how many bricks it comes with and physically count them to make sure it's all there.;)

That's what I do with the Target defect sets I pick up from GW. When I get home, I will spread the pieces out on the table or floor, and go through the part sheet line-by-line. Unfortunately, only one set out of five or so has actually been complete. I'm about to give up, because I have wasted HOURS on counting pieces only to have one or two specialty pieces missing.

I do that with board games. They're usually only a few dollars, but if I end up with a game that's missing a couple of important pieces, I don't want to have to track down replacements online or throw the damn thing away.

Went to the Goodwill on a spur of the moment. Glad I did.
All the toys (COB, Pink Tag only) was 50% off, which sweetened the deal on the things I got.
Found myself Skylanders Lightning Rod $.99 (.50cents)
Skylanders Terrafin Pack $9.99 (5.00)
The Game of Life Complete :] 7.99 (4.00)
Monopoly Star Wars Clone Wars Edition $9.99 (5.00)
K'nex Mario vs the Chomp Set 12.99 (6.50)
K'nex Mario vs the Womp Set 12.99 (6.50)

I checked everything and all of them were complete. Much to my satisfaction
Payed about 27.00 :]

Found this for $3 today at Goodwill, but sadly it is missing the Tie Fighter disc. Appears to be complete other than that. I'm surprised it was there; according to the label, it's been there for 3 days. I guess this one flew under the radar /pun

Saw Mario Kart 3DS for 9.99. I probably should've gotten it. Lol. But oh well. I know I should be buying 3DS games on the cheap when I'll wait till my bro actually gets one.

No luck with returning the lego set today. The manager was apologetic, but I told her it was nuts to charge such insane prices for items that have no guarantee and can't be returned, and she didn't disagree. She also seemed to indicate that the Target stuff is junk which ends up at Goodwill for a reason and should be avoided, so that's another good lesson. Oh well, off to eBay to recoup my losses.

Wow, your Goodwill has a shitty DM/RM. All of the GW's in this area offer full refunds for all defective Target merchandise with receipt, even if you bought it from another GW in the area.

For the most part, if it has the original Target tag that says DEF SALV, it's either defective or an unsalable customer return. Not always defective though, as I've found countless 360 controllers/games tagged as such for dirt cheap that were perfect. They were just opened or missing the box.

MISSED SALV is basically unsold clearance, and should be 100% new and unopened.

My Goodwills has the policy that if you're not satisfied with the purchase, you can return it in 7 Days. But you only get Store Credit.

Ok I got an NES with all the hook ups, 2 controllers, and the original instruction manual for $12.99. I tried to play super Mario bros but the controllers were all weird, like I'd plug in the first one and it wouldn't respond, but then I'd plug in the second and that one would kinda work, I've never used an NES before, are the controllers always janky and I just don't know how to use them or are these just messed up?

Connectors might be all gunked up. I really have no how-to on fixing that, though, as it's never been an issue for me.

Try taking the controllers apart and cleaning them?

Try looking at the connectors that go to the NES first and see if those are messed up in any way. If it's just that they're dirty, then try using a lil pin or something smaller to dig out any dirt/dust/gunk.

If that doesn't help, then maybe it's the actual controller itself that might need cleaning. Use a cotton ball or one of those makeup remover type pads with a little bit of rubbing alcohol on the buttons to clean them.

This is what I always do when I grab used game controllers from the thrift stores. But wouldn't you know it, now that I need a cheap PS2 Dual Shock 2 for the PS2 I found a few weeks ago I haven't found a single one.:bomb:

Nothing great but didnt wanna go home empty handed- $4 each, Wheel Of Fortune Family Edition, Skate or Die, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for NES

Sometimes, going home empty-handed is winning, No idea the rice those go for offhand but I personally would believe wheel of fortune at least was 4 dollars too much, Have it for SNES, terrible game.

Yeah, the only one worth anything in cart-only form is the Vanna White edition, and that's still only going for ~$2 on Amazon.

Too bad that Tom Sawyer wasn't new/sealed cuz according to VGPC.com it's a $100 game in that condition.:D

Today I came up with these, nothing great.

Blue Gameboy Color $5
4-in-1 for gameboy $2 (solitaire, cribbage...)
sealed Thomas train DVD for $4

Pretty much this. I never call people out on it because I have no interest in starting any arguments, but I see the "I went all this way and felt I had to buy something to justify it" attitude in this thread as well as the Yard Sale thread, and that's a terrible attitude to have. All that's going to get you is a lighter wallet and a house full of junk. $4 for Wheel and Skate or Die is an easy pass. Tom Sawyer is at least a bit of a rarity, but it's an awful game and probably another easy pass unless you're a diehard collector.

Wasn't intending on calling anyone out. Just saying that's kind of a bad attitude to have when looking for deals. Yeah, no one likes going home empty handed, but it's better than going home mugged.

Yeah, those just went into the collection after I tested them out. Those came from the GW that slaps $8 stickers usually on anything that isnt a sports or racing game......anyone interested in a cartridge only Genesis copy of Mortal Kombat, only $8!

I found the Vanna White edition complete in box today for 2.99, lol.

Solid days between today and yesterday if you include my Pawn Shop finds:

Star Wars Battlefront (PS2): 2.99
Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness (GC): 1.99

I found some thrift store out in the middle of nowhere...of course they had the "glass case behind the counter" bs like every thrift store has now. They had a darth vader atari 2600 which i really wanted but it was $40 and thr games were $3 each ugh. I thought the entire point of thrift stores was theres a chance youll find treasure because everything is priced next to nothing no matter what. What ever happened to that?! Just another thing ebay has ruined for the rest of us!

Went to 3 local thrift stores today and yesterday.

The first one didn't have much in the way of games, but I got Shenmue 2 for Xbox for 3$

The second one was run by Habitat for Humanity and there was nothing but garbage there.

The third store was just another mile or so down the road from that one. Used to be a Goodwill, but now it's some different NPO. I got Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on GC for $3, and it's in great shape! I also got Sonic Gems for GC for the same price.

I was kinda bummed until I hit that third store, but now I'm happy :D

Saw N64 complete with 2 controllers and 2 Rumble Packs for 18.

I thought someone bought the $150 Atari but it was just moved to the front. Haha.

Picked up the complete series of Guyver (cept Volume 4) and Bubble Crisis Tokyo 2024 Essential Collection (cept Part 1) for $15. Thought the guy gave me a pretty good deal.

I found a copy of that, but for the :xbox: at a Salvation Army down the line. It was in the display case. So I had them bring it out, I open the case and of course there's NO DISC in there.:bomb:

I think it was marked $3.99. But still, if it was in decent shape I'd pay that to get one of the 'better' games from last gen on a console I still own(but haven't played in over two years now).

So I know where all the oldschool games go now. I use to see these all the time at goodwill last year then they stopped showing up. "Shopgoodwill"

Not really gaming related, but I found a series 2 tivo at a local thrift store so I thought I might get it to see if I could record videos of games on my xbox.

Today I stumbed on a great find. I go to disc replay and was about to trade some stuff and was eyeing a game I didnt have in my snes collection. Ironically they wouldnt take my trade-in cuz I was 5 mins past the cutoff time but I was waiting for someone to acknowledge me. The last guy getting his trade in processed was trading in some snes games and one of them was mega man x2. I stick around to find out how much them were going to give him and they was giving him the lowball special for 15 bucks. He asked for a dollar more them say no so I offered him 20 and walk out a happy camper. Talk about a right place at the right time.

ShopGoodwill really isn't that bad if you treat it like eBay and look for auctions ending at weird times. Once you find one with something you want in it, then just set up your account to autobid for you up to $X amount and hope for the best.

I myself sniped a huge lot of PS2 and PC titles for $20 something shipped, which included a copy of God Of War II that was a fairly new release at the time. So you just never know really.

I've done that once or twice when I was out of town at a Gamestop or something when they used to take in classic stuff. Albeit I missed the one person the one time who brought in all of the PS1 FF games and a ton of other great titles just after they had blown out the remaining older stock via 75% off sale.

I think the last thing I got from someone that I made an offer on after the local shop seemed to not want it was a 60gb PS3 for $40 with only the composite and power cable. I didn't realize till later though that it had been opened. Not to mention that after I bought it my interest in playing PS2 games on a PS3 went away, so I stored it for a year. When I brought it back out to try it out it wouldn't read a game anymore.:whistle2:##-o

Grabbed a Virtual Boy controller and power cord for 3.90 today... found 2 games last week... after never seeing anything for a Virtual Boy ever until last week... maybe the universe is trying to tell me to buy a Virtual Boy, lol.

Saw a complete vb set with the briefcase on e-bay a week or 2 ago 1900 all of the games that were released in us sealed with a system too

Not sure if this tops my CDX find, but here goes.

Clear purple Gameboy Color w/ Nintendo brand carrying case/organizer and the following cart only games (but with the little Nintendo plastic holders):

Pokemon Red, Yellow, & Blue, Game & Watch 2, Tetris DX, Mario Tennis, Pocket Bomberman, NFL Blitz, Men In Black, Dragon Warrior Monsters, 720, Super Mario Bros Deluxe.

$40

Had a decent pickup today:

$10 Game Gear with powerpack, ac adapter, and Playstation 2 power cord/av wires
$3 each Sonic Blast, Sonic Chaos
$3 each TMNT, Xevious, Batman

NES games are nothing special, but they were ones I didn't have and the labels/carts look extremely nice. I didn't notice the PS2 cords in the store, and it just so happens I need a spare power cord. Not the greatest price, but I regretted letting the last one I saw go.

Anyone know what a complete Dirty Harry (nes) goes for ? I check out ebay and amazon but it doesnt seem like the game is rare or any good, however saw a complete one today for $5 didnt bite

Great find on that game gear. I sold mine when I needed a little extra cash a few years ago, and regret it.

Just had an experience that could make this thread AND the Thrift Store Stupidity thread.

At the same Savers, found Metroid II for $3 and one of the Crash Bandicoot games for $2. Then saw that they were asking $25 for a Nintendo 64 with no controllers. Obvious pass.

I've been meaning to hit some of the other stores. Man I want that 50% discount. Maybe we should swap stamp cards next time they do the 50% off promo. ;)
