Tips on what to buy for college living

Right, right. I was just curious why Amazon's were so expensive when I could get some good old Made in China brand.
A heated blanket, and a laundry bag/basket.
heated blanket is probably my best advice as well
The dorm will be heated / air conditioned. They're new dorms.
Still might be a good thing to have since you will not be able to control the temp.

Anyways, I used a laptop lock for my first year of college since I didn't know my roommate too well. I also had a small safe since his friends were really shady.

Also there were brief periods of crime waves while I was living in the dorms. Some rooms were broken into and stuff was stolen etc. (at one time it was discovered to be the RA). I'm sure all college dorms experience this at one time or another. If this happens to you just leave the TV or radio on when you leave your room so it seems someone might be inside.

He doesn't show the lock, but i've checked mine and i don't believe that would work, either way, the average college student wouldn't know that trick.

The average college student doesn't steal laptops.

The average thief probably would know that trick.

But regardless, a thief has options. If your laptop has a lock on it and the other 20 laptops in the same room do not, yours will not be stolen. A lock is a good deterrent.

I can't speak for crime across campuses, but I can speak for crime on my campus. We have almost 0% B&E crime on campus. That means people aren't knocking down doors (though in one case, I did have a resident of mine have someone take an axe to their door to get in, but that was the only case I can remember, and it was an off-campus apartment).

Laptop theft is almost exclusively of two varieties:
1) You leave your bag somewhere and someone grabs it out of the bag. This is infamous at college libraries across the country.
2) You leave your dorm room door unlocked and someone living in the building (or someone who has access to the building depending on the security of the dorms) takes it.

Both of these types of crime are avoidable, and a lock can be a deterrent.

man hold the fuck up, i've really read this thread now....some of yall are outlandish

say no to hdtvs in a dorm - YOU'RE THERE TO STUDY! Too many freshman don't last because they got their priorities mixed up. 42 inch/52 inch....be happy with a 32 inch if you NEED one. Go smaller because more than likely, your dorm room is going to be small as fuck and you don't want to be that guy with all the good shit in his room (trust me!)

say YES TO LOJACK! Google it. Best thing for a laptop. A lock can be picked. Lojack will track your shit down. My ibook got stolen freshman year by someone who used to always ask me for stuff. I got lojack on my next laptop and never had to worry about it. If it does get stolen, I can just alert them and wait for the idiot to try to connect to the net. They better chop it down and throw away that hard drive because lojack doesn't go "away" unless your subscription is over. Trust.

Toliet paper? Minor! Most RAs have a closet full of it. Just ask them.

Disposable food? Most campuses force you to buy a meal plan. Southern Miss does. I hated that crap, but if you live on campus, you had to have it. I got off campus with the quickness.

Hangovers? You're a freshman living in a dorm. Don't you know campus police love people like you?!!?! Go off campus or stay at a friend's house for the night because you don't want underage drinking/public intoxication charges (or DUIs) just because you're trying to live up that movie life.

I'm telling yall for your own good - fuck EVERYTHING ELSE AND STUDY! I barely got caught up in that fairytell shit and started soph year with a 2.5. I was embarrassed. 2.5's are what you aspire to make senior year, not freshman year. Get your education, play it smart, limit credit cards, and find trusty people so you can move off campus and save money. Don't buy stupid shit. They want you to buy stupid shit.

The front desk here always has free toilet paper. Not the RAs though.

At our university, that's all done by the facilities/cleaning services department. Not handled by either the RAs or the front desk (security). And if you live in on-campus apartments you gotta get your own.

It really varies from college to college.

Man....my RA had stacks upon stacks of that shit

He would always pass out that 1 ply shit though....smart people requested the decent 2 ply
