TOS: Dawn of the New World -- IGN: 6.7, GT: 7.9, NP: 8.0

Ugh, I forgot I had this pre-order paid off at gamestop like 3 months ago. I might just cancel it and move the credit to Chrono DS... and pick this up used since im absolutely overloaded on games..... :(
Are there any reviews for this yet?
I'm certain I'll be buying it regardless, as I've enjoyed every Tales game I've played and Symphonia was one of my favorite GC games, but I'd still like to read some reviews before I get it just so I have an idea of what to expect with this one.
The general consensus on the GameFAQs boards seemd to be "good, not great."
I was going to get this. Then I read about all the awful things this game does, and decided that its not worth my time.
This. I might get it after a price drop or once I hear more impressions and reviews, but I canceled my preorder.
The general consensus on the GameFAQs boards seemd to be "good, not great."
I think that with the dearth of RPGs on Wii right now, "good" would probably be just fine.

Should be on store shelves in just a couple of days now!

The IGN review screams of someone who hasn't played the series. I'm not necessarily saying the game is great, but the review isn't the best, either.

wii comes up with another Medicore game, this is the reason why Wii gets so much shovelware because it attracts the casual games AKA Soccer Mom
Ouch: http://wii.ign.com/articles/928/928479p1.html

I'm still...getting it cause I love Tales games.
Ouch... that's a pretty bad score. I'll wait for a few more and maybe see where it goes.

I think I might just cancel this. Yeah, I've been waiting this but I've had my doubts for a while so I'm not disappointed or anything- plus, there's like a ton of good games that I'd rather play.

I will probably wait till it drops to $29.99 and then use my 10% off bestbuy coupon and $5 off reward certificate. That review @ IGN was pretty bad.

I still need to try to play the first one. I had a hard time because of the forced focusing (where the background and foreground blurred depending on what the game was looking at)...made me ill and I ended up selling it back in the day.

The IGN review may be bad, but it also reads like it was written by someone who hates the Tales series and would give any game in this series a low score. I imagine the press average will end up being a low 8 or a high 7, which is about what I would expect.
The IGN review did answer most of the questions I had about the game though(the monster catching aspect and the game length), and with this already being cheaper than most games to start I will definitely be getting it this week.

Vinny, I would hold off on that at least until some more reviews come in. I just finished reading that review and have to agree with josh there. At the very least I was expecting a comparison to Tales of Vesperia, which they gave a respectable 8.2. Is this one fundamentally worse than Vesperia? Is it just docked in comparison because of the "last-gen" graphics? No? Then is it more linear or have a worse story compared to Vesperia? I haven't even played Vesperia but with the 2 games coming out so close together I would have expected as least a mention of the other one. I realize they are for different systems and are thus reviewed in different "channels" on IGN, but c'mon, the comparison needs to be made. The reviewer doesn't even compare it to the first Symphonia except to complain that the graphics probably aren't that different.

Basically, the guys complaints boil down to the graphics and the fact that is a JRPG .

There is absolutely no reason to listen to that IGN review unless you are not a fan of JRPGs, and were mainly interested in the game due to some type of hype train you stumbled upon. Anyone with an interest in JRPGs should completely ignore this guy and wait for some reviews from fans of the genre. If fans of the Tales series and the genre don't like it, then you may be on to something.

Idk, I love the Tales series and completed Symphonia 3 times, but this game just doesn't look like a worthy sequel. It would have been better had they made a new Tales universe honestly...Even for a Tales fan like myself I think I can wait for this to get bargain binned (which I'm sure will be rather quick).

That review does seem a little off... like the bit about wondering what the other party members are up to while the four lead members are fighting a battle. Amusing observation, but has he never played any JRPG before this?

I won't be picking this up in any case; I'm just not a fan of the Tales series. But I find it so strange that this game has had basically no advertising, very few advance reviews or previews, basically no hype or momentum whatsoever. It's essentially the only "traditional" JRPG on the whole console (Fire Emblem is an SRPG and DQ Swords and Opoona are oddities), it's from a relatively well-known series, it's following a well-received series entry on the 360 and it's the direct sequel to another well-received entry on GameCube. It seems like it should be big news.

It does sound like a game for fans of the original series... so I guess I'll keep it.

Of course, whether or not I play it are another story considering all the other games.

That gametrailers review seemed really good. I'm a little worried about the game being very linear, as that could hurt the replay value.
I'll be picking it up tomorrow, I just hope it's good. It's one of two games I bought the Wii for...
What's the other?
IGN says the translation is shit, while GT says the script is good. Who's right?
You know, based on the way that IGN review was written I bet he's just seeing typical JRPG conventions and thinking they are translated badly ;).

Yeah, it does concern me that the IGN reviewer was a noob to the series. But still, there's a lot of conventions this game has that I just don't like on paper. Anxious to hear what CAG thinks about it once they play it.

Worry no more: all JRPGs are very linear.

Just finished watching GT's video review, looks pretty good. Did they change Zelos' voice though?

I wouldn't put too much stock in the ign review. That's the same dickhead that got me to waste money on the Spiderwick Chronicles for my nephew.

Even though they are very different games, I really doubt that Spiderwick Chronicles (which got a 7.5) > Tales.

The Gametrailers review is probably pretty accurate. Good game but flawed in ways that may bother people who didn't like TOS.

Is GS actually getting this today? Amazon says they won't have it in stock till the 14th (even though my delivery date is still estimated at the 14th), and I'm gonna need it by the weekend if I want to play it.

I think so. It's a lot deeper than I remember it...

My Amazon order says mine won't ship until the 17th even though they get it in stock on the 14th.:whistle2:/

Oh well, I don't have any time for games until Thanksgiving break anyway.

Played it for about an hour and a half. So far Vesperia is far superior. My main complaint is the main character is by far the whiniest bitch I've ever seen. He makes Luke from the first half of Abyss look awesome in comparison.

Oh geez...that's not cool.

It's not a bad game. It's just after playing Vesperia, and considering the fact that it's a sequel to Symphonia, I did expect a bit more. Also there is a lot of time for the main character to grow a pair.

So that's at least one thing the IGN review was right about.
Yeah, I've been spoiled by Vesperia as well.
Maybe I ought to play this one first (just picked up my preorder) before delving into Vesperia. But then I may just get Tales overload and not want to start Vesperia ;).

Err, I'm talking about the ability to explore, which this seems to lack with a point and click map. I'm going to assume you were referring to the story of JRPGs.
I played it for about 2 hours last night, and so far I like it more than I expected after seeing the reviews.
That's good to hear. Is it really that similar to ToS, gameplay wise? And does it look the same as ToS (especially if you're playing on an HDTV)?
My main complaint is the main character is by far the whiniest bitch I've ever seen. One reason I love Leo Stenbuck from ZoE so much).

I'm still going to buy the game sometime.

Then you'll glee every time he apologizes in the beginning.

I gave it a hour and will play more before I make an opinion. I do wish they kept the original opening song, but that's just me.

Oh, and it supports Widescreen and doesn't look terrible on a HDTV.

I played for two hours and already I find annoyance in main story. The main protagonist is big emo pussy by apologizing to everyone rather than standing up to them. I also don't understand those unnecessary flash back scenes for events that just occur a few minutes ago.
