Excellent. I added a whole load of stuff to my music collection when a bunch of Sam Goody's went out of business.. hopefully I'll be able to do the same this time around with TR.

Is it all stores or just select ones?

So this is for the entire chain, nationwide? I didn't see anything about in on the website or for my location.

Added - yes its true. Since it just started and most people likely don't know, basically the whole store was still there.

30% off magazine
20% off books
10% off everything else

An employee said he guessed the %'s are likely to go up in later weeks. Decided to hold off at 10% off, but they did have the Star Ocean til the End of Time figures I wanted, so hopefully they'll still be there later when the percentages go up. Might get some mags at 30% off at least.

One's nearby so I can at least check. They have some action figures for Star Ocean til the End of Time I'd like to get hopefully - if they still have them and they're marked down.

same here. i bet they're not gonna slash prices like 50%. i'm guessing something like 20% - 30%.

they usually have console titles and some psp titles.

but we'll see. i'll keep an eye on this and report back if the deals would be worth it.

Mmm.. hopefully Tower Records carries Guitar Hero and I can get an awesome deal on it.

If not I bet they've got plenty of other stuff I'd be interested in, and I have access to two locations. Score!

its a bit of a drive for me, but if I see people finding good deals, I may make a trip. Could use some more music CDs.

Thanks OP

They're gonna do the Media Play thing where they start from %20-%30 until they have nothing good left...then the go to %80-%90. That's my guess

kinda sad to seem them go. It was cool to have a music store open till midnight. But their prices where so high I'm not shocked. Also they had a really good section of magazines.

I hope I can pick up cds on the cheap.

Well, I went tonight and talked to the cashier at Tower Recs nearby. She confirmed that they are going to have a sale most likely by tomorrow. Take this with a grain of salt, she said that they are probably going to clearance stuff by 10% at first then additional 10% as weeks progress. But she said to not take her word for it, so the exact clearance pricing is unknown. I'll check tomorrow for sure though.

But yeah, if it's like this, I'd have to wait a couple weeks because all of their stuff is priced high. Something like Shadow of Colossus is still marked 49.99 at mine.

Kinda a surprise that they are closing all the stores, if that is what they are doing. I was expecting them to close only some of them and just regroup. Its worth a look since its just 10 mins. from work.

i was looking at the store locations. it looks like the people who would benefit the most would be CA people. there's a ton of stores on both north and south of the state.

but i'm keeping an eye on those DVD boxsets, if i fail to grab those games.

I'm really sorry to hear that all the stores are going to be closed I grew up in Sacramento and I can remember going to Tower Records and Tower Books all the time. It's time like these that you realize how much things change in a relatively short time the speciality retailer of my youth are slowly dying out and are being replace by big box stores.
You can all thank Wal*Mart for this.
Nah - I'd blame a combination of Towers High prices (18.99 for a CD?!?!) and the rise of digital music...iTunes, illegal downloads, etc. Not that I'm defending Wal Mart....F them ....but I don't consider this a Wal Mart issue.

Agree'd.

the old tower huh.. i remember when HMV went out of business. kinda shocking at the time. but i wouldnt be surprised about tower going out of business. they are very expensive and as far as games are concerned they dont seem to put them on sale. but i will watch this, theres 2 in the city, and 1 in jersey that im closeby at work.

my local tower records (which happens to be near what use to be my favorite movie theater) is quite strange... One year they started carrying video games, then they stopped, when i asked what happened to the video games, they said "Uh we never carried video games.." yet I still had the recepit from like the month before saying I bought Eternal Darkness for the cube. Then they come back in with a small section of video games at high prices. There book department keeps on fluctuating in size and tends to go POOF every few years with a return every so often. Can't wait til there cd's go 50% off so I can start stockpiling on soundtracks :)

I guess this is what happens when you have a store run by gothic freaks :p

yea 18.99 for a freaking new cd... or a new release dvd "ON SALE" for 21.99$

However you got to admit, there soundtrack section blows the shit out of best buy's and CC's soundtrack area out of the water.

i agree, it's sad to hear that tower is going... i remember way back when the smashing pumpkins made an apperance in our n. clark store in chicago.

they did have a great pron selection! :applause:;):whistle2:#

As much as I love sales, it's still kind of sad when an entire chain goes out of business. Sure Tower was way overpriced on most stuff, but they also carried a lot of things you can't get elsewhere and they had in-store concerts and autograph signings. They did have some pretty neat collectables that sometimes, yet rarely, got clearanced. They also had tons of posters I'd never seen anywhere else.

They needed to reorganize their corporate structure with the changing times, which they never did, so that greatly contributed to their downfall.

That being said, at Tower's current prices, they would need to drop to more than 50% off for a lot of stuff to even be considered deals.

More like they need to drop it more than 50% for it to even be MSRP ;)

Tower Records has a good selection of stuff that you can't get at most B&Ms. Their "rape me" prices make it hard to buy from them, considering that you can get most things over the Internet nowadays for cheaper.

Hah! I was one of the "gothic freaks" that used to work at Tower. The prices were high but only because they couldn't buy stuff at the same rate as a Best Buy. We constantly had it pointed out to us by customers but there was nothing we could do, Tower didn't have the infrastructure to ship tens of thousands of copies of CD's to it's stores.

The flip side was that back when I worked there (99-00), online stores weren't quite as trusted or well stocked as they are today so people (including me) who wanted rare, random CD's, would buy our stuff at Tower.

Unfortunately, I don't live near one anymore or I'd take advantage, the Fairfax one had a decent selection of comic book collections.

Just got back from closest Tower.

no discounts on electronics
20% off books
30% off magazines
10% off everything else, including games

To give you an idea of their prices, Wipeout Pure was $39.99 before discount.

Needless to say, I didn't buy anything!

Hot Topic seems to do OK.

It's a combo of both. The digital distribution of music combined with not only Wally World but Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc. selling CD's for below Tower's cost pretty much drove the nails into the coffin. They just couldn't compete with it all.

Sad...I remember spending many a Tuesday growing up hitting Tower for all the new releases.

There is a tower records 5 mins away, but I haven't been there in a long time. THe last time was only to get some concert tickets. I used to go there when i was younger, but that was before I knew how to save money(and before I paid for CDs out of my own pocket)

On the one hand, they were a great place to browse and you could literally stumble over something interesting.

On the other hand, I can't count the number of times I'd go in to look and leave empty handed because the prices were just too high.

It was a weird combination -- the store is perfect for browsing and impulse buys, but the prices discourage anyone without lots of cash to burn. To be honest, I'm surprised it took this long.

I won't even bother checking my local Tower, at least not for a month. They have a crappy selection of high-priced videogames. In fact, I have a much better shot at getting some music or DVDs than a game.

I agree 100%. I loved going in to Tower to browse and buy non-mainstream cd's or import singles. But I would never buy regular widley available cd's there. I would just go in there and look around, make a list of music I wanted and started looking elsewhere for better prices.

Unfortunately, my Tower cleared out it's games years ago. I remember taking advantage of the game clearance with great effect.

i don't even walk into that place...everytime I do pass by one in the mall (next to kb toys) there is always a gothic sales person on the floor.
