Why don't they give trade in prices? I sometimes have luck when calling gamestop, gamecrazy, while EB says they're not allowed to....

They normally are allowed. They just use that excuse because if they just willing gave out the values, people would be check the worth of their games everyday. Plus, if you drive all the way to the store to figure out the value, they got you in the store which increases the chances of you buying product, or trading in the games. If you heard that the game was worth $2 over the phone, you would say forget it. If you heard $2 instore once you spent $2+ in gas to get there, you are more than likely to trade it in.

Would you want someone to call you and ask for 20 trade-in values?

I miss tradestop.com, it was a nice side site of Gamestops and basically told you how badly you'd get ripped off if you went to trade in your games.

It saved me MANY trips.

Sadly, the only site like that now is wherehouse.com, but that doesn't always reflect the in store values at FYE,Coconuts, etc.

Mind you, I used that as a guide when trading in multiple copies of Powerdrome racing for PS2 to FYE, so it wasn't TOO far off.
They list trade-in values on the site now. It's really nice.
Too bad it's only for the more recent/popular titles though..

I didn't check it very thoroughly. Your best bet is to go in and ask them to look up 50+ games and when the register monkey's all said and done you say, "Oh really? I was looking for about $10 more, sorry about that."

You'll do that once. Then you'll be booted out of the store and not welcome back.

Ok, so what if I bring 50 + games in, they scan them all, and I realize I don't want to trade them in? Or they going to boot me out of the store then too?

It sounds like it's a lose / lose situation at these stores.

maybe if you're 5'2" with no backbone. i'd love to see any of the game apes try that. i'd have a field day.

You say that. You'd be one of the lucky ones to go out in handcuffs. And yes, you better believe it's happened. I don't have to put up with your attitude. If you don't leave when I say leave, you'll do it when Officer Idontcare says so.

The customer is always right, until you're not a customer anymore.

i've worked retail for 6 years so i'm no stranger to policy. and yes, you'd have to put up with my attitude. in order to refuse me service, you'd better have a good reason to do so. my asking the price of 50 games isn't going to cut it, and officer Idontcare will side with me. similar situations have happened to me, and i've come out on top just fine.

i'm assuming you're not a prick, but there exists a lot of inconsiderate, lazy and unhelpful retail clerks who are quick to try and flex a little muscle (not literally, though that's another topic entirely) with a customer when they're getting rubbed the wrong way. i don't tolerate it, and i let them know so. i've never been removed from a store, and i don't expect i will, because if such a situation arises, the clerk is going to be in the wrong.

When I worked at EB in San Diego, we gave out trading prices over the phone all the time. When I transferred to Oakland, however, I was told that I could get written up if I get caught giving trade-in prices over the phone.

Thank god I don't work there anymore...

Id say that pretty much an "owned" right there, show those GS monkeys who's boss!

You sound like a lot of fun to help in a store.

I have found if you just call and ask if they have time to check the trade in value on a game or two, they are much more willing to be helpful. Sometimes it's tricky trying to look up values over the phone because whoever is in charge of naming games in the computer system will abbreviate and/or just leave words out of the title. It's probably some corporate intern that's never played a game in their life. Anyway, it's just a million times easier for a clerk to scan your games and have the computer bring up the values by UPC instead of just having to search based on names.

When I worked at GS, I was allowed to give 3 trade-in prices over the phone. When the store was really busy in the evenings, I didn't have time to sit there and cater to some nerd with a hard-on for Resident Evil 4. If you want the games, bring them in, i'll scan them. If you don't like the price, I'd give you the games back and you could leave.

I had called the police at GS for people throwing a fit for not geting their stuff scanned, and sitting in the store. The officers, ironically, side with the stores more often than not. Who wants to listen to some 16 year old whiny punk? Adults usually are nice about it, just bring the games in and look around while their getting scanned. Madden and Halo 2 release days, we had armed police in our GS stores, and police escorts when we closed the stores.

We didn't even allow people under 16 in our store till after 4 pm.

wish we had that when i worked at TRU. i gained a reputation for being the store LP/cop when neither of those two were around. sometimes you're throwing out a gang of 6 17 year-olds by yourself, which can be hard trying to maintain control of the situation. we also had off-duty police acting as security guards on the weekend, and thru the 2 weeks leading up to Christmas. they were very helpful and were able to take quite a bit more action than your average security guard/rent-a-cop. i learned quite a bit from them, regarding the law, and heard/saw a million crazy stories. i almost miss working there.

This will be my last post on this topic. So I'll try to be clear. I can be a prick sometimes, but to most of my customers I'm very friendly. I get a lot of regular customers and make new regulars every day. But when it comes to people who come into the store I work at and feel that they can get away with whatever they want, that doesn't sit well with me. So when someone comes in and pisses me off, I ask them to leave. If I ask you to leave, you have to. It's not even a matter of trying to "flex a little muscle" (I know, not literally), it's the law. As a customer, you can break a return policy, but not the law.

Here is a true account of what happened to me once.

A "customer" came to me one day wanting to trade some games. I told him how much his trade was (about $10 for 6 old sports games). He said I had to give him more than that. After explaining that I don't make the trade values, I said that he didn't have to trade them in at all. He could keep them. Well he wanted to argue and I didn't. I said his two choices were to trade them in and leave or just leave. He didn't like that either. Now I told him he had to leave or I'd call the cops. He said just what you said. "Officer [Idontcare] will side with me." No he won't He'll do his job. The officer came and asked what the problem was. I said that I offered $10 credit, he didn't like it caused problems and I asked him to leave. He asked the customer if that was true, he said "well it's like this." The officer said to him "well, you have two choices: you can trade them in at the value he (me) said, or you can leave." Customer said "no, you need to make him give me more credit." That's when the oficer took him outside explained how things work in the real world (I don't know what he actually said I still had other customers that I was helping through the whole ordeal). Then he was frisked on the glass storefront, put in handcuffs and put in the cruiser. the officer asked if I wanted a tresspass order placed on him. I'm not cruel, I didn't want this to happen. I told him to just tell him to leave and not come back and I'd be okay with it.

End of story. Well, not really. He then went to our other store and traded the games in without incident.

So there ya go. You will be in the wrong and you won't get your way when the police come to sort it out. Sorry for the longwinded post, but I had to get that out. Have a nice day. PM me if you want to continue the conversation.

I give you a :applause: Ive dealt with many people justlike that who think we can just change the prices to whatever they want. Madden 2003? Sure, I'll give you, oh, lets say $40 for it.

wait wait wait -- we're talking about two different things. you're referring to asking someone to leave because they're demanding that you bend on store policy, and not letting up. that's called "disturbing the peace" and it's not at all what i'm talking about. i'm saying that you can't ask me to leave the store for no reason, or if you don't like my attitude. and ya can't! there isn't a "law" that says a customer must leave if you ask them. you're gonna need more than that when the LEOs show up, i assure you. i've had more than a few people arrested from my years at TRU, so i'm no stranger to the procedure.

but don't worry -- if i come to your store, i'll play nice! ;) also, thanks for the civil discussion.
