IIRC 1.5 is SATA I and 3.0 is SATA II... backwards compatible of course. :)
Cool, thanks for the update. I checked it out on Wikipedia too and went with the 3.0 drive for the same price. The NewEgg reviews were very positive and there were alot of people who used the drive in their PS3.

If anyone is looking for a combo deal for a 320gb drive and enclosure you can get this one for $111.99 w/ free shipping:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...SubCategory=92&SortField=0&PageSize=10&page=1

It is the first one on that page.

Doesn't the PS3 format the drive for you when you install it?
Doesn't the PS3 format the drive for you when you install it?
initially i wanted to connect it via usb and create a backup on it before installing it.

So, you planned on creating a backup, then dumping your backup onto your PC? I know if you created a backup and just planned on plugging th ebackup in, that would NOT work. I'm almost positive it asks you to reformat the HDD when installing it.

Anyways, I may pick up a Western Digital 320GB Passport Drive at Best Buy this week. On sale for $120...I have more than enough Gift Cards there for that....now, I just have to figure out if those drives are easy to open.

The Passport is the drive I opened up. I used a precision flathead to pry open the case. There weren't any screws beneath the rubber feet. It was a bit scary since I was convinced I would crack the thing, but it held up.

Cool...thanks for the info on the WD Passport. I believe there is a YouTube video on how to open it, but I cannot view it at work.

i was unable to find the connection type of a lot of the external hdd's i was worried id get one and open it to find something else.
well it looks my troubles with the samsung were due to the hdd being messed up. i thought the issues i was having were due to trying to fat32 format it. i have a replacement arriving tomorrow.

Just a BACKUP question. Do I need to format the destination drive to FAT32 to backup data? I know if I plug a USB drive in, it would detect it, but I do not have one large enough for a backup. I have a spare external HDD, but it currently has data on it. I was wondering if the backup just makes a seperate folder if I have to format to FAT32....

I did purchase a WD 320GB external drive. People say they are easy to open....I have yet to do it until I am ready.

NEVERMIND....I googled....dumb me: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.html

so im aggrevated............the ps3 says it cant start the system with the new hdd in.
it says if it cant start it needs to format and requires the update data. ok awesome, i put in the usb drive that contains the proper update data and it cant find it.
for what seems like an incredibly simple process by all accounts im having a shit ton of headaches from this.
im at a loss. the hdd is formatted w/fat32.

paz9x, i apologize... i replied to your private message. i hope it helps.

unfortunately the ps3 will only recognize files by these sorted folders:

PS3\MUSIC
PS3\PHOTO
PS3\VIDEO
PS3\UPDATE
PS3\SAVEDATA

I'm a bit confused....I thought the PS3 automatically formatted the new HDD when you put it in the system? Do you have to put the update on the external drive before installing it?

yeah i appreciate it.
if you look on the ps3 update page it clearly lists how to structure the files, i just didnt pay enough attention.

my ps3 doesnt recognize the old hdd now that its conencte via usb and im trying to restore my stuff.

super awesome extra fun.

You might want to do a full system backup but it won't be fun, you would have to put the old hard drive back into the ps3:

To do a full system backup (this will basically copy ALL of the photos, music, videos and game save files and settings on the PS3 to a backup folder; you will need to have an external usb harddrive or thumbdrive w/enough space on it).

In the XMB, go to System
Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
Then choose Back Up
Finally, pick the device to backup too (memory stick, usb harddrive, etc).

Personally I bought a 320 gb hard drive to upgrade my PS3 and I bought an external 250gb hard drive to back up my current PC. It works well.

My biggest issues were those damn screws holding the frame onto the hard drive. Totally stripped one which I had to destroy by using a drill. Other screws I got lucky with. Be prepared to use time. It took an hour to back up, 30 minutes to curse and remove screws with doctor's procission and change the frame and then another hour restoring which the whole process, while slow, worked really well. in the end and I highly recommend.

Accessing friends saves and trophies resulted in the error80022d90. I tried the memcard save fix. And the fixes in the neogaf thread. None of it worked. I ended up leavng the ps3 on logged in to pen for a few hours. Now it seems to work. Trophies won't display until I start the corresponding game.

I haven't read a single person having the error that did not have a 320gb he'd not sure if that's coinsidence or not

try creating a memory card slot for psone or ps2 games in your ps3, for some reason that may fix some or all of the read errors. :x
PAZ, just out of curiousity, what drive are you using? (I want to avoid it...haha)
haha yeah. im using the 320gb samsung.

and like i said in my above post, every thread or post i found with someone havgin the 80022d90 error the user mentioned the new hdd was a 320gb, they didnt say what maker so i dunno if its inherent to the hdd size or the samsung model itself.
i dont know why the update data file portion of the upgrade isnt mentioned in a single tutorial ive read. the whole specific file folder issue was my fault i just assumed there was something else going on since nobody had mentioned it anywhere.

fatez. i tried the supposed mem card fix. no dice.
i also did everything listed in the neogaf thread. such as reactivating every download and that didnt work.
i ended up restarting the ps3, connecting to psn and letting it remain connected for a few hours.

i had read somebody else had just left their ps3 connected to the psn for awhile and it fixed itself.
so my current opinion is thats what works, i think all the other rumored fixes dont actually do anything and it is instead the connection to the psn that corrects the issues and the users just dont realize it.

Ok, i upgraded my PS3 drive to the 320GB I bought at Best Buy...seems to work fine, currently restoring my backup.

Another question. I put the PS3 drive in the external case, but WINDOWS VISTA does not see it. Any suggestions? It tries to install "software" for it, but the WD drive does not have software and it's not a WD drive in there. Did I have to format it first or soemthing?

UPDATE: MY wife's laptop sees the drive and she has VISTA Premium. I have VISTA Ultimate on my PC and it just keeps looking for drivers for the WD Passport Essential. Seems odd. I did a QUICK format on my wife's computer as NTFS and exFAT. Still does not see it. I's almost like I need drivers for the HDD for Vista. Are those available?

Figured it out. The USB ports on the front of my PC must not be providing enough power. I plugged into a REAR port and it found the drive right away. WEIRD. Apparently it's a power issue with WD.
For everyone with 80022d90 error: Unplug all your USB drives and reboot the PS3.
i stand by my assertation that an extended time connected to the psn is the fix.

as removing things from my usb's certainly did not work.

i just upgraded mine yesterday from 40gb to a wd 250gb. no problems so far, hope it stays that way. i figure the 250 should be large enough.

i really wish you could do this with the 360. this was an awesome method of upgrading sony gave us.
i download a lot more stuff without worry. i hate having to delete everything so i can download more on the 360.

being able to upgrade the drive coupled with gamesharing has made the ps3 my primary console outside of online gaming.

Paz.. I definitely think you should write up some kind of faq.. or at least put your experience in one cohesive article for other people to read. I know when I mentioned my upgrade you brought up your troubles and I seem to be in the same boat. Thank GOD I decided to copy all my saves (one by one for all three PS systems) to a USB drive not too long ago. I guess everything else *I* had on my original HD can be redownloaded except for the Rock Band songs I exported right before I traded off the disc. (Not happy about that AT ALL considering no rental stores carry it).

Well, let the downloading marathon begin. I'll have to wait for the bottom to drop out on RB1 before I can use the songs again.
I finally picked up a hdd, to replace my 40gb. It was a 160gb, 7200rpm seagate for 39.99 off of ebay.
Nice Dude. Im still out here struggling to get by with my measly 40gig

Can I do the restore with the 40gb hd that I just pulled out of the ps3?
Also, will it restore my psn downloaded games?

I think I did every thing by the book. I think the problem was the hdd I transferred the info to might have been messed up. I got my saves, themes, ok, it's just my D/L games aren't there...

Sadly not, but you can backup to any usb drive or even ipod/mp3 payer. The good news is that if you use the backup/restore utility on the PS3 it will copy over everything and the kitchen sink, and that includes Gameshare stuff too.

EDIT: Weird that that you lost games ....... that shouldn't happen.
I am able to get a hold of most of my games though. Just have to re-download them.
The thing is, with the backup/restore utility, technically once it's done restoring it should be exactly like you had it before.
The thing is, with the backup/restore utility, technically once it's done restoring it should be exactly like you had it before.
I did these steps after backing up my stuff:
1. Installed New HDD
2. Turned on and prompted to format New HDD for PS3
3. System > Backup Utility > Restore
4. At around 55% Comes up with Error cannot complete.
5. Restarting system brings up message "Rebuilding HDD"
6. All my Saves are on the HDD now except for PS1. My themes are there also.

I am just missing the games themselves(burnout, PJM, Eden, and others) And my Trophies are gone as well, I backed those up onto the server, after everthing I hit triangle to restore my trophies, but nothing was there... It looks like a long night of downloading.:bomb:

Edit: After installing and starting up those games that had trophies and checking my trophies they had returned!

Ok, so what I just want to use an external HD, e.g. the western digital passport, to supplement the 80gb drive that came with my system? Can I just use one of the usb ports on the ps3 so I can use it to run content off it, e.g. required installs by games? It'd be nice that way so I can also use it to backup files on my computer too.

Sadly an external HDD works for movies, pictures and music but not game installs/data.

I have a question, I have my 40gb HDD out of my PS3. I wanted to use it as an external HDD. It is a FUJITSU Mobile MHW2040BH. It has no slave/master pins. I got an external hard drive case and the hard drive will not power on.

I tried connected it to different computers, and even back into the usb on the PS3 and it will still not power on. Any ideas on what I can do.

Is there a chance that this hard drive was made ONLY for use with the PS3?
Does anyone know of a good, cheap 20GB FAT32 drive that I can use to do a backup? I've already installed my new HD, but I don't like the fact that none of the original file dates were copied over.

Also, is it a bad idea to only have one side of the HD drive tray secured with screws? I mangled/stripped two of them.

EDIT: Well, this should work: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Little-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226364446&sr=1-1
Contact Sony and they will send you a free HDD cage and screws.

I'm upgrading my HDD in the next 24 hours and was hoping you guys could put my paranoia to rest.

All game saves, memory card saves (PS1, PS2), etc get backed up?

Game data (like custom levels in UT3), and all downloaded content or games, does not?

Dead Space had a free suit you could download before 10/31. It's no longer available in the PSN as far as I know, will I be able to re-download it from my list of downloaded content? If not, will it mess up my save game?

Thanks!
