Update - 3.50 downgrade NOW AVAILABLE. Requires the EU or US version of Lumines.
I am retarded. Someone please help me. I cannot for the life of me figure out what to put where to run emulators/homebrew. I really want a good GBC emulator. Any suggestions for a 3.4 system? I actually want to use it to run a legal rom that I have Daikatanaif you must know. The GBC version never actually released but it was actually pretty damn fun. It is a legal rom that Romero himself released for public dl.

So how do I go about playing this legal GBC rom on a 3.4 custom firmware?
the name of the GBC emulator is RIN

look for it on pspupdates or psp-hacks
I'm tempted to do this before my upcoming trip....although, not sure what I need to downgrade for as I'm not into homebrew much lately.
I kind of got everything figured out but a good thing to do is,rip the UMD's to your memory stick and I think you get more battery life

I have never had this much fun with my PSP. 3.40 custom firmware allows for so much cool stuff. Not to mention you can get rid of stuff that annoyed you (the sony computer entertainment startup thing for instance).

I love my CF. The irsmp3 plugin is awesome.

I'm not messing with themes or anything like that now since they have the possibility of bricking.
I'm so pissed. I used this downgrader and went 2.81 -> 3.5 -> 1.5 and tried to go -> 3.30c oe, and it bricked! I did this with my other PSP and it was just fine, it runs 3.10a OE I believe and I had no problem.. with this one, I followed the exact same process, and it bricked right in the middle of upgrading! I'm so pissed. It's not like I turned it off or anything. It was upgrading like the other one did, everything was going fine.. then it just stopped and never came back.
according to website i found, a psp mod chip can unbrick a psp. they were selling it for 50 bux. i'll PM you the link.

If anyone's still planning on downgrading, be careful. Sony released a 3.51 update recently. Find the 3.50 FW, don't DL the 3.51. I know somebody out there (not necessarily on this site) is bound to accidently do it.

You know, if Sony would just allow me to copy my games to the memory stick and even still require me to have the game in the drive to play, I'd be totally fine with that and probably would even just go with the real firmware. But no, they continue to fight it rather than find a amicable solution. Reminds me of the Napster wars before the like of iTunes came about.

Anybody have a link to the 3.50 update?

downgraded the other day and this is so sweet! however i am trying to play US umd's on my japanese psp. i changed the fake region to US in my custom 3.40 0e-a firmware, but it still won't play. does this feature not work in 3.40 oe-a?

irsmp3?

What is that?

Removing the startup screen is not chancy.

So what homebrew app is your favorite?

irsmp3 is a plugin that allows you to listen to mp3s while doing other stuff. In the XMB, web browser, UMB, HB apps, basically anything. It's helpful for Madden or something where you get tired of listening to him and Al. It's pretty cool.

I was talking about themes like new icons, new XMB and stuff. I don't really know about changing the startup screen. These changes have a chance of semi-bricking though, so I'm not worrying about it right now. I've had enough problems and near heart-attacks already.

I'm playing PSP Revolution and PSPKick right now as far as HB apps go. PSPRev is basically a Stepmania clone and PSPKick is a music generator. Fun stuff. However, I'm quickly running out of space on my 2gig :bomb: so I'm done with HB apps unless I buy the 4 gig from CC. I probably should as cheap as it is before it jumps back up.

Others claim it can be done. I've never been able to do it either.
Thanks.

My blue Japanese PSP factory fw version is 3.11. Should I upgrade it to Japanese fw 3.50 or American fw 3.50 first? I never upgraded my psp and the offical instructions seem to suggest NOT to mess with cross-country fw releases.

Another question is my Japanese PSP has the "X" and "O" functions reversed during menu operations. Will upgrading it to an official American fw fix the button reversal?
I upgraded my Japanese 3.11 to the American 3.50 and then downgraded to 1.50 successfully but I'm wondering which custom firmware I should use.
EDIT/UPDATE: Successfully installed firmware 3.40OE-A! Raised the CPU speed to 333 and made X the confirm button!
Nice! Its actually a good game if you havent played it...
Will have to play it once I finally get my psp.
If it weren't for rumors of a psp redesign I'd run out and buy a PSP & Lumines TOMORROW!

I just hacked my buddy's psp for him, he had 2.71. And I 've got to say CPS2 games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 & Marvel vs Capcom look gorgeous. I also loaded up Suikoden II and Final Fantasy VII, two games I missed out on in the last generation.
Don't you mean the last, LAST generation
Finally got downgraded to 1.5. Woohoo! Now to get upgraded to 3.40 OE-A!
Congratz, you won't regret it. News is that the D~A team has skipped development on 3.50 OE to go to 3.51 OE. Hopefully we'll be getting it pretty soon.

follow the directions :) This is the first time I downgraded and it went excellent
any tips for someone who has never downgrade before?
Well, as expected, I'm having trouble downloading the 3.40 Sony firmware from pspupdates.com. Without that, no 3.40 OE-A for me. :(

EDIT: WOOT!! Download finally worked. 3.40 OE-A is now installed! Although, I had a bit of a scare during the initial boot of 3.40 OE-A. An error message popped up saying my initial settings were "corrupt." Fortunately, it was a simple matter of resetting them and I was A ok. :D

I just need to get find a good deal on a 4GB pro duo, and I'll be joining you fools. I'm sick of this official firmware bullshit, I need to spread my wings!

You just missed the Sandisk 4GB at CC for $49.99. I got mine for $48.XX after tax by using the BB 10% off coupon.

I was in the same position as you, until I got one free from prizerebel.

I bought mine back when they were $160. Worth every penny back then and even more so now.

Yea, this is CheapAssGamer but even I recognize a good thing when I see one. :D

HOLD IT!!!!

You guys with a TA-082/86 motherboard may want to think twice about downgrading and see what's down the road for custom firmware. Thank god I don't have one.

EDIT: Sorry, I hadn't realized Troz had linked this already in another thread.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but I need some help.

I've managed to downgrade my firmware and install 3.40oe. Only problem is, I can't figure out how to get any homebrew running on it. Everything program I try starts up but then reverts back to the XMB. I've tried installing stuff using Kxploit as well. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
What kind of homebrew are you trying to use?
You know, it might have been the stuff I was trying last night, I just gave NesterJ a shot and it worked.

However, I want an SNES emulator, the one I tried was SNES9Xtyl (?). It shuts my PSP down whenever I try to run it. I also tried the PSP universal remote homebrew (don't know the name, but it seems like the one everyone uses) and it won't work either.

Edit: Forget the remote thing, I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of getting homebrew to work properly.
Yes, the Greatest Hits version of Lumines works. That's the one I used to do the downgrade.
thanks homie didnt even have to post to get my question answered, the search thread button is my freind :)

Not really sure if this is the right place to ask, but everytime I try to run a homebrew application on my newly downgraded PSP, I always receive the same message, with a 80020130 error code. What's the best solution to this?

Put your homebrew files in your GAME150 folder (you have to create it), not GAME.
Cool, just flashed it to 3.40oe and it works.

Is it alright to delete the install files?
Yep...you can do a format memory stick within the psp menu and it will create all your folders for you as well. If you have saves or other data back that up first.

so.... anyone know when the downgrade will be available for fw 3.51? I accidently upgraded when downloading some demos the other night X_X
so.... anyone know when the downgrade will be available for fw 3.51? I accidently upgraded when downloading some demos the other night X_X
Eh... Whaddya do that for? I told people to be careful about upgrading to 3.51. You might be out of luck for a while, I haven't heard anything about a 3.51 downgrader.

I was all set to downgrade my newly bought (used) PSP, however I am hesitant as I really bought it to play the new CASTLEVANIA X PSP release &
the inability to upgrade past 3.40 because of my motherboard down the line is really the reason I am not jumping on doing this. Is the homebrew stuff really worth all the risks and future firmware lockout possibilites.
Thanks for your thoughts I am completely torn on this one.

^^
That was my concern, too. But, there were 2 reasons why I downgraded.
1. I know someone out there will be able to hack each new firmware; there is no perfect security.
2. PSP can't live forever and there will be a point where there will be no reason to upgrade anymore.

So, stick to the current firmware for as long you can live with and ride it out, even if it means not being able to play a game or 2 temporarily.

I personally would hold off.

Luckily I don't have to worry about it since I don't have a 82 mobo, but if I did I wouldn't downgrade just yet.

I mean, CF makes the PSP much greater IMO, but I don't know if it's quite worth locking yourself out of, what, 1 or 2 years of software? Plus, there is no guarantee somebody will be able to make a foolproof key cleaner. Apparently, the later downgraders completely jack up the keys as compared to the earlier ones. Add to that the seemingly diminishing HB scene (which may revive, who knows?) and I think it's just too risky.

The people on the PS boards are working on the key cleaner and it seems that the 2.70/1 downgrader may be able to upgrade again. What is your FW?
