Still not enough to play on the ps3 at any price right now, im really not sure id even buy one for $99 right now since it would mostly sit there... im using my Playstation card though for reward points, hopefully in a few years it will be worth it for one... wow i checked my most recent statement and im paying almost 11% apr right now after only owning the card a few months. Just gonna pay it off and ditch it i think. So much for Sony Rewards...

So let me get this straight... you opened the account, did NOT take advantage of the PS3 offer, AND you're carrying a balance and paying interest, AND you're going to close the account before even taking advantage of the rewards? :applause:

Hi guys, wow this is sure a tumultuous thread!

As you can see, I'm a new member here at CAG. I came hoping to find a cheap deal on a PS3, and stumbled onto this thread.

I just received my Playstation Visa card in the mail today after signing up for the deal last week. There sure seems to be a lot of confusion about the offer here!

I'm of the firm opinion that you do not have to purchase a PS3, and also that you don't have to buy it at sonystyle.com in order to qualify for the $100 reward. I believe that the reason the PS3's on sonystyle.com are linked in the .pdf that was posted earlier is that you are allowed to buy those things as soon as you are approved for the card; if you want to buy anything else, or from a different store, you must wait until you receive your card in the mail. Of course, there is an advantage to buying at sonystyle.com, and that is the 5 points per dollar spent.

I have a question about which PS3 is the better deal. Does anyone think that the 160GB version which comes with the two free games is worth the extra $100? The games both look like something I'd enjoy playing, so that right there is $70 or $75 of the difference. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance! :)

IMO, no. Uncharted can be had for ~$45 or less, and the remaining ~$55 will go a lot farther if you're willing to purchase and install a new HDD yourself.

ETA: Spent a few minutes Googling, and the 160GB bundle is an even worse deal than I thought. Sealed copies of Uncharted are going for as low as $30 on eBay, and I found a 500 GB Seagate SATA hard drive for $65. That's just from Googling hard drive and clicking on the first few links I found, not even putting effort into finding a deal. So that's a sealed copy of Drake's plus a 500 GB drive for around $100, plus you'd still have the original 80GB drive to reuse or resell after you replace it.

Yes, I paid $55 AR for a 320 GB 6 months ago... and Uncharted can be had for $45 or less... But if you're not willing to change the HDD yourself, this 160Gb maybe for you.

This is a no-brainer deal if you have good credit, use your card for daily expenses and pay your card off in full each month. Getting a credit card and using it responsibly only improves your credit worthiness to other financial institutions. Don't believe all the negative talk in here about getting a credit card. Somewhere down the road you will need a loan to buy a car or a house. A bank will be much more confident in lending you money if you have proven that you can manage an open line of credit responsibly rather than someone who has no borrowing history whatsoever.

Thanks much for putting in the extra effort and looking up stuff like that; I'm not sure why in the heck I didn't think of doing it myself. I've been building computers for a number of years so installing a HDD in a PS3 shouldn't be a problem. Once again, many thanks! :)

Actually yep think so, i have like 500 reward points, what would that buy me a electric cord?? Got a great offer from Discover, and im transferring my balance to them. But i havent gotten rid of the card, probably gonna wait till they offer some desperation ps3 offer and get one on the cheap. Sony's card i have sucks major ass, though, completely...

how exactly is that possible? when i applied / got approved it says i have 0% interest for the first 12 months...

I dont know, Chris, but my card is two months old and i checked the apr yesterday morning and its right at 10.85% already. I didnt get in on any offers, i signed up for the card in november. Just assumed it was 0%, but it wasnt at all. Gonna keep the card and use it some day but no time soon. Getting a discover with 0% for 6 months and then 6.99 for good. And i get actual cash back at the end of the year, not something i may or may not purchase if i had a choice.... since i got a great deal on a 360 getting a ps3 is the least of my concerns, just having fun gaming on a fun system is what im doing now...

Apparently, some people in SD tried to purchase the PS3 from Dell, and got the $100 credit. He posted a screenshot of his online statement as a proof.

He also mentioned that he used the temporary number that popped right after he got instant approval.

Do you have to use the temporary card number to buy the PS3 right when you sign up or can you wait and just use the actual card when it shows? I saw in the terms & conditions that you don't have to make the PS3 purchase until 3/31 so I thought I might just wait to see if we know anything more about a potential PS3 price drop over the next month before buying.

Just getting the Playstation VISA card gets you a $100 credit. Even if you didn't ever charge anything else on the card, this is a good deal. The other $200 worth of credit is just bonus.

Huh, you got the card and got $100 credit on your statement without even purchasing anything?

I did this and had the credit within a week. Bought the PS3 from dell on 1/30 using the temp number and got the credit on my statement on 2/5.

You can wait until you get the card and use it before 3/31.. but the Dell deal is too good to pass if it shows up again or is it still running now? That guy will only pay $ 42 or almost free after statement credit from Sony Reward point.

Yea, I just checked and the 20% off coupon code expired last Friday. Also both PS3 systems are listed as out of stock at dell.com now as well. Oh well, I can wait on it for now. Hopefully another coupon code will pop up from dell in the next 45 days.

Or you can buy the system at Circuit City since they're giving out 20% off Console now. But since they're no longer CC technically, but liquidators, not sure if they're still consider authorized dealer.

But probably will, since I know that if you buy at CC now, the manufacturer still covered the warranty.

I'm applying for the playstation card now. A nice 2nd PS3 system / BD Player for the bedroom.

Wow, those guys were braver than me. I decided to buy at a Sony store after calling about the offer multiple times. The written terms definitely seem to indicate you don't need to buy from Sony, or even buy a PS3, but most of the phone reps told me I did. Oh well. The real shame is that I bought a PS3 right away to play the Killzone 2 demo, and I wasn't impressed. I only care about the multiplayer though, so I'm still holding out hope. Anyone else hate the PS3 controller compared to 360? I may buy that adapter that lets you use a wired 360 controller on PS3.

Hey, keep us up to date on what happens if you do buy at CC. Hopefully you will get the $100 credit quickly.

I'm really liking this card... just got my first statement and it has the $100 PS3 purchase credit plus I already have enough reward points for an extra controller. Not to mention I already got a free Blu-Ray remote just for registering 5 Sony products. In another 2 months I should have the $200 bonus credits too.

^ Where did you purchase your PS3?

I hope other CAG starts to realize that this is a good promo and take advantage of the deal. :)

Yea, it would be helpful for anyone who received their $100 credit to post where they purchased the PS3, and how long after the purchase posted did they see the $100 credit show up.

Yeah this is a pretty awesome deal. Close to 10% cashback are you kidding me? 3k purchases in 6 months is nothing. Gonna hit it up when I get home from work. Can't believe I didn't look at this sooner. Just a clarification, I'm almost positive you don't have to use the credit on a ps3. I took advantage of a sony card deal a while back and the credit went onto my account after I hit the proper amount of purchases.

$100 credit always show in the 1st statement from my personal experience last year with my wife's Sony Card, which we use to buy a laptop. And a lot of people from SD or CAG also confirm that they receive it within days from various Sony credit card deal.

I hesitate to pay $100 for a 2nd PS3, but for $ 42 before reward.. seems like a no branier. Now I just need to find a Circuit City that has it in stock or praying that the Dell discount is back. :)

By the way, just write down the temporary number.. just in case the Dell discount is back and you haven't receive the actual card.

Here is the math at Dell or Circuit City 20% off

$ 400 - 20% off = $ 320 + tax (8.25% LA) = $ 346
Statement Credit = $ 346 - $ 300 = $ 46
Reward Point converted into statement credit:
2% at 346 = $ 7
1% at $ 3000 = $ 30

Grand Total: $ 46 - $ 37 = $ 9... WOW.

Yea, I have the temporary number and just received the actual card in the mail yesterday. I was just waiting on the right deal. I didn't want to jump in on the dell deal without a more definitive confirmation. If it comes back I will probably just buy from there, unless you or someone else has success going the CC route. My local store had a bunch of PS3s there when I was there last week.

I agree that it is a great deal and more people should take advantage of it, even if you already have a PS3 and just are looking to use it as an extra BD/DVD player, paying under $50 for that is a no brainer. Plus you get the sony reward points on top of that as you pointout.

The shame of it is that after your OP which explains the deal there are 5 pages of flames/arguments from people that can't comprehend the deal, don't understand how credit and credit cards work, or just want to bash Sony and the PS3.
^ Where did you purchase your PS3?

I bought my PS3 from Sonystyle.com. I didn't want to risk buying it somewhere else and not getting the $100 credit. But it sounds like you get $100 credit just for opening the account. It shows up on the statement as "New Cardmember Credit".
Just a clarification, I'm almost positive you don't have to use the credit on a ps3.
Correct. Here is the fine print:

"Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") must be made by 3/31/09 and will automatically qualify you for a first $100 Statement Credit."

Buy a laptop or an XBOX and get $300 off.

Is there any type of rewards or cashback, etc. that's offered by the card after you've used up the $100 statement credits? Just wondering because I don't feel like applying for another card simply to get a deal on a PS3, however if the card had features offered by other cards then I might be more willing to take the plunge.

Wow, seems like a great deal. I run my eBay business entirely on credit and easily spend over $1,000 a month. It takes $5,000 spent for me to just get a $50 Best Buy card, so $3,000 for $300 off of a PS3 is a killer deal. I might have to look into this.

i signed up for this and will be paying my tuition with the card. i'll have 3000 in like 2 months. and by the way, i called sony to verify what an "everyday purchase" was, and the rep told me anything that isn't a Sony product purchase counted. so it looks like going to college WAS a good idea.

You get Sony Rewards points that can be used to purchase Sony products. See this thread for details:

Yea, I just re-read the T&C and I think this is correct. They try to trick you into buying a PS3 though with this statement:

Apply now for the PlayStation® Card, be instantly approved and for a limited time receive a $100 card credit when you purchase a PLAYSTATION®3 system at SonyStyle.com or by calling 877-865-SONY (7669) with your new PlayStation Card1

But when you read the actual T&C that Liver Kick posted above it does not indicate that you have to buy a PS3 with your first purchase, just that it has to be over $299.

Wow, a great deal just got better!

This is a pretty good idea. Its not like you have to buy $1500 worth of PS3 games! You can pay your internet bill! Pay all your bills and rent with this card and you be good to go! Thanks Sony! If I needed a PS3 I would be down.

Yeah just be careful and don't screw up like I did and go over your credit limit because they charge a $39 fee. I'm so used to putting everything on my credit card and I didn't realize my limit with this card was so low. Most of my other cards have at least a $20K limit but this one started ridiculously low at $2,250 for some reason. I need to call and ask if they will raise it.
This is correct. I just got my $100 credit for a non-PS3 purchase at Amazon.
^ Do you charge $300 on your 1st purchase or a total of $ 300 from several purchases?
I charged $300 in one purchase. I'm not sure if you can do several purchases.

What kind of rewards do we get from Sony? From earlier posts, we get 1 point per dollar spent outside the Sony Store and each point is basically 1 cent. If we get the PS3 from the Sony Store, we get 5x points and 3x points from authorized dealers. And there's the Dell's 15% off offer. So many factors are making my head spin.

What about using an already existing cash back credit card like Blue Cash American Express or whatever Discover card offers?

I'm planning to buy an HDTV and PS3 so I'm weighing my options here. (Plus there's the matter of hunting down a used backward compatible 60GB PS3 instead of a new gimped 80GB PS3).

alright i dove in due to the fact that AMX [primary CC] inexplicably reduced my credit line by 50% without telling me a word. And no I have never defaulted on my bills or even paid just the minimum on a balance.

Got instantly approved and plan on making random purchases, i'll post back with results.

The coupon at Dell.com is now 20% valid until Feb 18.
Coupon code PLDWH47D$6BT2J

The temporary number that Chase gave during instant approval is only valid at Sonystyle.com... so you have to wait for the actual card to use at Dell or anywhere else. Well, you have a week now. :)

Oh man, this thread has been really funny to read. Thanks for posting the deal Op and giving me many laughs from the stupid people who do not understand how a credit card works. Too bad I can't afford a credit card (no job) and I have a PS3 already.

That is not true. I just did the dell deal with the 20% coupon with my "temp" number without any problems. So either I get a ps3 for $39.99 with all 3 $100 credits or worse case scenario is that I only get the 2 $200 credits, it is still a $139.99 PS3 which is still CHEAPER than going through sonystyle.com!!!

^ Did you just apply today? I applied 2 or 3 days ago.. and my temp "3 digit" number doesn't work. :( I have to wait for my card that should be here tomorrow or Saturday.
